I'm a huge Ethiopian/Eritrean food fan. And a bit particular about it being decidedly healthy and fresh. The only place I frequent in the Bay Area (and I've made it my mission to try every single restaurant in this style) is Assab. Well, before Dareye. The food is always lovingly prepared. The salad portion is dressed to perfection while still being crispy; obviously prepared to order. The little details about green onion, fresh garlic, real lemon juice- delicious! This place reminds me of how my mom would cook when she spends half the day in the kitchen. If you are at all into food from this region, skip the Berkeley and other Oakland spots. This one shines much brighter. Just remember you have to take it to go. They have two tables kinda on the street. More to wait than eat it seems. read more

Foods pretty good. It's legit homemade stuff. Pops in the back and all. They usually got the half platter for like $8 and the full for $12 or $14. Wow! What a great little place with awesome food! We are soo spoiled in Oakland with such a great diversity of excellent eating choices. You can't get Ethiopian take-out just any old place, but I can within a 10-minute walk from home. The veggie combo at Cafe Dareye is superb! Way more tasty and flavorful than I've had at any other Ethiopian place. The food store also looks to have a very good selection of all the spices, flours, beans, lentils and other fixings you would need to cook this up on your own. Super friendly folks and the BEST injera (this stuff takes forever to make, it is totally worth it to buy it and try making ethiopian at home sometimes). Before, I could only get injera at Brundo's and they wouldn't sell that much for fear of running out at their restaurant. I'd still call ahead here to check and make sure they have some (they've run out before too), but I think the darkness and sour flavor is actually superior to Brundo/Colucci. Really wish this place had a couple more dishes in their combo and/or seating inside but it kinda doesn't matter because the food makes up for it. By far the best Ethiopian vegan combo I've found in the bay (yes I've been to ensarro etc.). All they serve is a vegan/gf combo plate but who cares? It's fantastic. The food here was super solid. Really good quality vegetarian Ethiopian food. That said, it's a bit of a weird place. Mostly a shop, with a commissary in back (a commercial kitchen), and 2 small tables out front. They only serve one thing right now (vegetarian combo), but sell lots of ingredients out front. That said, they don't sell any fresh vegetables or meat, so even if you were planning a full Ethiopian meal at home, you'd need to go to a second store to buy it. Either way, this place is killer, and I'll be buying Berbere and Mitmita here from now on. Gluten-free! These folks are not cheating their Injera by adding wheat flour and I do appreciate not feeling like I have ingested a whole cow after a meal from them. A veggie combo feeds me 2x. Lots of local East Africans source their Injera for their families here. (A very good sign of authenticity). They sellout of their veggie combos often so do call ahead! read more

I love this place! Cafe Colucci has always been my go-to for Ethiopian in the East Bay but then a neighbor recently told me about this place. It's delicious! They don't have the cabbage dish that most places have but what they do serve is super fresh tasting. The collards are amazing- the best I have ever had. I love the hummus as well- I only wish they gave you more! Dareye is also much more reasonably priced than lots of places. I will definitely be back. read more

Nice people, cheap and delicious vegan food, gluten free injera! I haven't tried their coffee yet, maybe next time (today??) The seating is limited, just a couple tables outside under their awning. It's really more of a store for injera and dry goods that has take out food. Their menu is limited as well, only the veggie combo in a full or half order. The half order at $6 is enough food for a regular human. The full order is an enormous amount for food for $10 and is enough to satiate a vegan bike racer (a difficult feat!) I actually really like how simple it is. This place is a gem, I highly recommend it! read more

It was my first time trying Ethiopian and no I am offically hooked!. I came here for the first time one month ago and I've already been back three times. It's so good and simple. There's only one plate but it's amazing. Even my husband who says he doesn't like Ethiopian food, likes this plate. That's saying a lot. The half order is very filling for one person and so healthy and inexpensive! Avoid this place! Expensive Sour sponge. The food was honestly inedible. One of the absolute worst places I've ever eaten. I have no idea why this place has amazing reviews. The food was so bad we had to remove it from our hotel room because the odor was too much to handle. After just a few bites I was sick to my stomach the entire next day.
