The server was very welcoming when I walked in, spoke English and provided me with an English menu, and was quick to check on me. I ordered the grilled pork shoulder. This came with green beans with bacon and grilled potatoes. I've never actually had a grilled pork shoulder. Being so used to the more fire version with the crispy skin, I really did appreciate the flavors that go into grilling it. The meat was still juicy with a bit of salt; it all paired well with the salt from the bacon and potatoes. Overall great meal with good service and easily able to wash it all down with some German beer. Just keep in mind that the place is a bit small, so you want to either get there early or head for the outdoor seating.

Drinks (4/5): Frankfurt is known for apelwein or apple wine. So when in Rome...I had the apelwein spritz which adds soda and Aperol. I will say that straight up apelwein is not my jam. It's nice to try while you're in Frankfurt, but it's too bitter and vinegar-ey for me. With that being said, when you mix it in with Aperol and soda, it's pretty solid. And if you're in a group, you can get the apelwein served in large stone mugs which is pretty cool. Outside of that, they have a lot of beer, as you would expect, and pretty much everything else. Service (4.5/5): I was pleasantly surprised with how friendly and attentive the service was (which is typically not the norm in Europe). Our waitress checked on me, thanked me and said goodbye as I was leaving, and overall, did a great job. Food (4/5): Since this is a traditional German restaurant, I had to go with another Frankfurt specialty: Viener schitznel with green sauce. Schnitzel just means a thin cutlet (often pork) that is breaded. The green sauce is made from seven herbs and while it's a tad bit herb-ey for my taste, it was still interesting to try. The dish is served with fried potatoes. Filling and hearty as you would expect from a German meal. For my first meal in Germany, it was a great start to my trip.

Ordered Apfelwein which was not very good - but to be fair I'm sure there's different versions like every other type of wine. Ordered the green sauce dish - a staple of cold green sauce, eggs, potatoes. It was tasty but the eggs were ever so slightly overcooked (the grayish on the outside of the yolk) but the sauce was pretty dang good! Never checked in on me once to see how it was or if I wanted anything else. Finally I just decided to leave and even asked her for the rechnung twice! My plate came out with some thinly fried vegan mock meat and their famous green sauce. The schnitzel also came with a side of potatoes to complete the dish. Your slowly pour over the herby sauce onto your dish and dig right in. I gotta give it props because it was delicious and a banger of a local cuisine to get to try. Our server was nice and checked in on us periodically until it got too crowded. Overall, a really nice place to try some vegan local food without worrying about it containing meat.

We ordered the schnitzel (absolutely delightful - still thinking about it months later!) and yummy sausages and a side of spaetzle. Drank a few very thirst quenching German beers. The wait staff was great -- attentive but not overbearing-- and while it's unlikely we'll be in Frankfurt again, we would definitely visit Klosterhof again if possible.

Named after original proprietors Rosa Schreiber and her daughter Teni Heyne, their Sausage recipes still comprising roughly half of the Gaststätte menu, it was with sweet and sour Apple Wine from Rothenbücher in hand that "Cheers!" preceded first bites of Liver Dumpling Soup teaming with Salt and Scallions. Entirely regional dishes, none perhaps moreso than 'Handkas Mit Musik" with pungent Cheese bathed in Onion Vinaigrette and Carraway Seeds, it was alongside Rye Bread that bites were taken prior to Potato Sausage, boiled Spuds and herbaceous Quark. I ordered the liver dumplings, which turned out to be liver meatballs served over sauerkraut. Odd... but they were incredibly soft and flavorful. I actually really liked them. The sauerkraut was simple but good! (Coming from someone who hates sauerkraut!) For the main course, I had the Frankfurt schnitzel (Viennese style), served with green sauce and fried potatoes. The schnitzel was very thin but was generous in portion size. The green sauce was really just cilantro. It was ok -- though I think I would've preferred a classic mushroom sauce instead.

It might be cold and blustery outside, but by the time they pack in the hundred inside, you'll be toasty. And bring Euros, lots of 'em, because this place hasn't seen a credit card...ever. And we're talking way back to founding in 2015 when Farmer Franz tried to get a meal with his lederhosen as collateral. Not everyone speaks English. If you let them know you don't speak German, they will set you up with one of their English speaking staff. Get the apple strudel. The creme anglais that comes with it really makes the dish. Head to the restroom to see just how big the restaurant is. One room has a tree growing through the ceiling!
