When I lived in Germantown. The food was delicious. Generous portions and excellent quality. I stop by the restaurant from time to time. This last time was it for me. I ordered a Pu Pu Platter to go. The fried shrimp was half cooked. The outside of the shrimp were golden brown but the insides were mushy and the shrimp was cold. They did not fry the shrimp completely. My order came with 2 pork ribs, I received 1 and 1/2 ribs. Also the wontons were over cooked, they were so crispy that the meat on the inside was ineatable. I won't be going back, something similar happened the last time I was there, but I forgot. So this time I wanted to post a review so that others are aware of how the quality of the food has gone down. read more

As a Cantonese person, I didn't find my experience at Cafe Hong Kong a very good one! You throw "Hong Kong" in your name, I'm going to expect some good Cantonese food. I decided to not order the typical Chinese carry out food and got some more traditional sit down style dishes. I ordered the Sauteed String Beans, Shredded Pork w/dried bean curd, and Fish Filet over Vegetable Szechuan dinner. The string beans were very bland and oily. The shredded pork w/dried bean curd was very dry and was also bland too. The Fish Filet dish was pretty flavorful and wasn't too bad, but it was a bit oily also. Overall, if you're looking to eat dinner style Chinese food, I would give this spot a pass. You're better off going to Chinese places in Rockville such as East Pearl. If you want the typical Americanized carry out food then you can't really go wrong with this, but who knows! read more

I'll be honest in saying my review is mostly for the one dish I get from here and that too usually as take out. I've developed a taste for Taiwanese beef noodle soup and most of the places that make it are in Rockville. This is the only local one in Germantown that I like because it will absolutely warm you up on a rainy day or cold Winter night or when you're fighting a nasty cold. It has the right level of numbing spiciness. Ample amounts of beef as well, and they have handpulled noodles to boot. Price point is about $10 so that too is on par with the general pricing of such an item. I have not had any customer service issues as usually I call it in, and they have it ready within 10 to 15 minutes for pickup. read more

After years of trying multiple dishes I have found a couple that are worthy. Sadly only the main chef makes the food properly so I only go on days he is there and cooking. I was pretty excited beforehand when I saw this restaurant had hot and sour noodles (酸辣粉）because it is extremely to find restaurants that serve this dish in the DC area. Looking at some of the yelp reviews led me to believe that this would be an Sichuan restaurant with authentic level spiciness. Alas, how wrong was I. I came here on Friday night around 8PM with my wife and it was pretty empty. The manager/owner was Cantonese and seated us promptly. My wife hearing me speaking Cantonese to the manager immediately raised the question of how Sichuan authentic the food could be if the owner was Cantonese (Fyi, for all non-Chinese people, Cantonese Chinese people in general don't eat spicy foods) but I reassured it would be ok. Our server didn't show up for a couple minutes even when we were ready to order. When she did show up and took our order, she asked if we could handle spiciness which we promptly replied that not only were we able to, we wanted the most extreme spicy and tongue numbing levels they could put out. We ordered the hot and sour noodles, cumin beef, and mapo tofu. The hot and sour noodles came out first and it was pretty big for only $6....because it wasn't very good. It contained no hotness whatsoever. Then then mapo tofu came out and it was pretty small portion, furthermore again no spicy level at all. Not only was their mapo tofu not spicy, it wasn't very flavorful either. We complained to our server about the spicy level which she replied that it was the spiciest they could make. Finally the cumin beef came and instantly we could discern it was not stir fried but boiled, which makes a huge world of difference in taste. Again, it was non spicy and didnt tasted average. Even the average American probably wouldnt consider the food spicy at this restaurant. Now other Sichuan restaurants like Jin river and Joe's noodles in Rockville aren't spicy to me either but at least the food there is flavorful and delicious. Cafe Hong Kong had neither. read more

We have been searching for a go-to Chinese restaurant since moving to Germantown. I think we finally found one! (we had one but it sadly closed). 1. Hot and sour soup is a go-to for both Luke and I. Luke pronounced their hot and sour soup delightful! 2. Eggs Rolls are important - they were ok. Not the greatest but good. 3. Dumplings (steamed and fried) are a favorite of the boys and me, good! 4. Has to have a wide and varied menu (check!) Overall the experience was great. Delivery was on time (although mother nature intervened and caused a slight delay - dumping an inch of rain in a little over 11 minutes). Main dishes are generous in size (which means Lunch for me with leftovers!) The food was good and the Fried Rice met my dad test (my dad made the best-fried rice). 4 1/2 stars. Ok, so I went twice within one week. The dishes we ordered were very good. There are new owners and the one I met, Wendy, was very polite and friendly. The service was good. Portions were very fair and prices were decent. See photos...beef chow foon, sliced chicken, ginger, and scallions in pot, chicken and sweet corn soup, kung pow fried tofu, assorted meats with seafoose and fried tofu in pot. All dishes were delicious!! Finally, they will be doing Chinese hot pot sometime in May, I definitely will be going there when I'm back in town. I was surprised to see how dead it was inside but that didn't take away from the service or food. The buffet of meat and vegetables is served by a waitress while the buffet of sauces is self serve. The sauce selection is plentiful and they had all my favorites. Our group ordered multiple plates of meat and vegetables. My favorite was the spicy beef, black mushroom, and watercrest. My friends enjoyed fatty beef and variety of vegetables. One friend ordered chicken and it was tough after boiling. Pass the chicken and go for beef. The staff was incredibly friendly and even let us try to "turn off" the flame on our hotpots. They joked with us and made our night comfortable. I will definitely be returning. read more

We ordered shrimp, chicken and cashew nuts, egg rolls and shrimp in garlic sauce. All of our dishes were really good. The fried rice is some of the best we've had anywhere. On the back of the menus are coupons that entitle customers to free items depending on how much you buy. We were entitled to some freebees, but we didn't notice until we got home (and it was way too cold to go back out that night). So it is up to you to be diligent in redeeming your freebees. The person taking the order was a bit impatient: tapping her fingers and hovering over us and we tried to decide what to order. Not a fan of being rushed. I had an Eat24 coupon and felt like having Chinese, so I placed an order for delivery here. The food arrived in about 10-15 minutes, which was fast but kind of concerning because the restaurant was at least 6 or so minutes away, meaning the food could not have been made fresh. It definitely did not taste fresh. The General Tso's chicken was room temperature, not hot at all. The meat was also all dark meat. The beef and broccoli was very hot, but the meat had not been cooked enough. The crab wontons were okay - lacked in flavor and filling. The crispy eggplant was the most disappointing dish I think I've ever ordered... It was not crispy, first of all. Second, I'm not kidding - it was battered and fried in the exact same sauce used for the General Tso's chicken. So it tasted exactly the same except it was eggplant and it was soggy. I threw most of it away. I've had much better Chinese food elsewhere. We spent close to $50 plus tip for everything and nothing was good. However, the food is very clearly not made fresh and is kept frozen which comes through in the flavor. The pork fried rice is noticeably dry and the dessert menu is limited at best. Best Chinese food in Germantown! I have had dine in, carry out, and delivery from Cafe Hong Kong and all have been excellent experiences. The food always tastes fresh and they are flexible with order modifications and special requests! My favorites are the beef and broccoli, orange chicken, and crabmeat wontons. We have ordered from this restaurant for over ten years and usually the food has been extremely good. However last few times have been a bit of a disappointment. For sample, our last meal included Kung Pao chicken and the it just did not taste fresh and it felt as if they had reused chicken from a few days ago and put it in the dish. This might come down to preference, but I finally found a Chinese place that doesn't overcook their vegetables. They cooked the vegetables in my dishes perfectly al dente. Even when I specifically request "al dente" at other restaurants, they STILL overcook it to the point you just taste the sauce rather than the vegetables. Also, the sauce is light and doesn't overwhelm their dishes. They also give a good mix of vegetables and whatever protein you choose. This is another problem I have at other restaurants. They either give me too much protein or too much vegetables and little of the other. If I wanted more of one or the other, I would have just chosen dishes that are just protein or vegetables. I don't have that problem at this restaurant, and it's such a breath of fresh air. I wish I had tried them out sooner but not sure why I didn't. Might be because of the previous bad reviews, and I just took the plunge to try them out today because my current go-to has significantly gone down in quality. This is by far the worst food I have ever yelped. Kung pao chicken was bland, had no spice as they used some old dry peppers, and lacked celery never thought I'd say that about a chinese fast food kung pao is an easy staple. Salt and pepper pork was overwhelmingly greasy, lacked salt lacked pepper. The greasyness was due to poor frying method, the breading just absolutely soaked up the grease. Crab Rangoon... although available in any american chinese takeout they managed to mess this up too... the filling was also bland, literally just cream cheese in wonton wrappper. Crispy beef, this they did right by right I mean on par with just about any chinese takeout. Beef was crispy despite being drenched in sweet and sour sauce. You dont order chinese takeout expecting amazing food, but this was outright horrid. Last but not the least really bad headache after eating their food, yall can guess that one Im sure. This is my local Chinese place to go to. Majority of the time we order, we option for carry-out because honestly, the place doesn't seem too clean. My family and I dined in at this place one time and had to ask for another glass of water since the glass provided was dirty. Their service isn't that great either- when we needed water refill, we had to wait for a couple of minutes for the server to show up again. However, their food is fantastic. We usually get their general tso chicken and tofu, Kung pao tofu and lo mein. I ordered takeout from here last night. It's a nice spot to dine in; perhaps another night. I got Singapore noodles which were pretty good & my hubby got general tso chicken. We got their chicken wings as well. The entire meal was good. The Singapore noodles were spicy, just the way I like it and not oily like some places do it which was a major plus! The general tso was very flavorful. The wings were very flavorful but very small which made me upset for getting them. Most people do the whole wing and thigh. They cut them in half to profit more. My husband and I have different opinions about this place. The first time we ordered, we got General Tso's Chicken and Singapore Rice Noodles. We didn't have a menu and how could you go wrong with these dishes? Well, the chicken was good - how can you mess up fried chicken? But the Singapore Rice Noodles had too much curry powder. We then gave them a second try (now with menu in hand). We ordered Beef Ho Fun (not sure if these are the exact names of the items on the menu), which is beef with wide noodles, Salt & Pepper Shrimp (fried shell-on shrimp), and San Be () Chicken (sautéed with basil - a Taiwanese dish). Two of these dishes came off the specials menu. They were $10.95 and came with choice of soup. We got the Hot & Sour and Pickled Cabbage with Pork soups. Beef Ho Fun - could use more salt but beef good. Salt & Pepper Shrimp - maybe tastes better for dine-in when shrimp shells still crunchy. You may be like, "Ew, crunchy shrimp shells!" But if you've never had it, don't judge. San Be Chicken - the basil flavor could be stronger, but then again, I like basil. The sauce was a bit too sweet. All in all, I DIDN'T HATE it but my husband refuses to order from there again. So, mixed reviews. Oh, be sure to request NO MSG. I can't believe in this day and age there are still Chinese restaurants still cooking with MSG. Came here before and the food was so-so, but now the restaurant is under new ownership. According to the new owner they couldn't change the name because the restaurant is actually a franchise and there are legal hurdles to go through to change the name. But now, this is basically a new restaurant with different food than the one before it. They now serve Szechuan style food with an all you can eat hot pot option. We got the all you can eat hot pot for 19.95 per person and chendu cold noodles (sweet sour spicy) as a side dish. The noodles were fantastic. Noodle texture was perfect and the sauce was spicy and properly flavored in terms of being not too salty or bland. The portion in the noodles was also very large - as a dinner portion should be. As for the hot pot, the ingredient list is plentiful. Ingredients range from the standard tofu and fish balls to fatty pork intestine, lamb, fatty beef, luncheon meat, potato noodles, water cress, to scallops, and more. All the favorites we usually eat at home. The broths can be configured for savory, spicy, or both with a partition in the middle of the pot. We got the split pot to try both soup flavors. I thought the savory would be bland as I usually prefer spicy, but it actually had good flavor. The waiter/waitress came by frequently to take empty plates and ask if we would like extra ingredients - they serve the ingredients from a buffet type stand at the back, which I like because this prevents other patrons from messing up or wasting the food. All in all I feel like 20 or so dollars is pretty worth it here since eating hotpot at home is not that cheap considering the variety of ingredients one needs to purchase, and you get the benefit of not having to clean up when you eat out.
