Moved to Olney recently and have been looking everywhere for good Chinese food. Finally found it here. Great service, great prices, large portions and very flavorful. The chicken is moist and not all rubbery like I have found at other places nearby. The dumplings had a lot of flavor. The staff was also very kind and helpful. Recommend for carryout because is quite small. Hopefully remains consistent because this will be new go to for carry out. read more

The food is amazing! I've lived in Olney for 8 years, and just discovered this place. Yes, its hard to tell their hours, but just place an order when you can, its so worth it. We really like the Hunan Chicken. The beef was also great. Today I tried the barbecue pork appetizer. It was absolute heaven. Couldn't stop nibbling until it was all gone. Eight years ago, I consistently reviewed this restaurant as a dive with horrible food. Eight years later, it is still a dive but the food is amazing. Everything on the menu is good and if you ask, they will sometimes make you dishes that are not on the menu. The service is consistently good. The dumplings are the best I have ever had. I would have given them five stars but the ambiance is just horrible. At first glance, you will likely tell yourself not to go inside and order food. Don't be fooled by the look of the place. I ordered the Sichuan Tofu, Kung Bao Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, and Egg rolls. The price is very reasonable, and the portion is big. Their egg roll is huge. The chicken fried rice is full of white meat chicken. The food tends to be on the sweeter side for me. I enjoyed their food better than some of the more famous Chinese restaurants in the Rockville area. The Lady took my order is very pleasant. I think there is only one cook in the kitchen, so she is doing everything else. The time I was there they are very busy. If you ask too many questions, she might be short with you. read more

Finally!!!! We have been in Olney for 10 years now, and have been bouncing around between different Chinese restaurants, not ever truly happy. Noticed Shang Hai (a stand alone building) behind Backyard Naturalist (off 97/Morningwood), and finally got a chance to give it a try. Not much info online- no website to be found, and have never seen a menu floating around town. Ordered the staples (crispy beef, combo lo mein, shrimp fried rice, orange chicken & sweet/sour chicken). Talked with the woman at the front counter all about the restaurant. She was very proud of her business and excited for me to try them out. Excitedly told me how they use the best cut of beef for crispy beef and bigger shrimp for shrimp dishes. When asked, shared that some of her personal favorites included dishes combining chicken or shrimp with veggies. The crispy beef was as delicious as she hyped it up to be. We had been struggling to find a restaurant that made this as delicious as our fav Germantown spot and Shang Hai may have surpassed it. Perfectly crispy and delicate, packing tons of flavor. The lo mein knocked it out of the park- not greasy, and all of the proteins (chicken/beef/shrimp) were tender and perfectly juicy. Our young kids devoured the noodles and beef! Shrimp fried rice, huge shrimp, also very fresh. Prepared like an actual entree someone cared about and not some junky forgotten side dish. Orange Chicken didn't have a ton of orange flavor, and the broccoli carried most of the heat. However, the breading was nice and crisp. Did not have room to try sweet & sour, but lots of leftovers to look forward to! Did I mention the portions were ginormous? I'm not kidding. I have never seen such huge portions of rice/lo mein. There's no ambiance for inside seating so I wouldn't recommend eating in. Don't get me wrong, if I want Chinese, this is the place I go to. Not open on mondays. Fantastic little gem in Olney. I highly recommend the Thai fried rice or Singaporean fried rice. It's all super delicious regardless of which meat you pick or combination. I've honestly never had a fried rice like this!!! Definitely get it every time I come by. They do have a thai menu. I get the Pad Thai, it's not that amazing but it fits the craving if you need it. It's apparently a single man working by himself cooking all the orders which is p admirable during the weekday. I've come here at least once a month. THE local spot for some delicious Chinese takeout here in Olney. There are some spaces for seating inside, but the strength of this place lies in the very delicious food...and your ability to bring it home and enjoy there. As other reviewers have mentioned, Shang Hai is a primarily takeout venue. And I, for one, absolutely love it for that reason. I strongly recommend the General Tso's, Chow Fun, and Egg Foo Yung. The portions are very generous and the flavors are outstanding. The ingredients are fresh and the seasoning is just right. One of my major pet peeves for General Tso's chicken is the crunch factor...of which execution is on point. Nothing worse than soggy chicken, but here the chicken is crisp and the sauce is simply delightful. Neither too sweet nor too salty and with tremendous depth. I can't emphasize enough that is one of those places that focus on serving up outstanding dishes, and that's it. I am biased though as I have a special affinity for hole-in-the-wall joints that have perfected their craft as artisans of flavor. Shang Hai is a picture perfect representation of that to me. So, when the craving strikes (and you all know what I mean), Shang Hai is where I go. Phone an order in, drive up 20 minutes later, and then I'm back at home shoveling noodles down my gullet. I got sick off their food in the past twice. Also, they have the WORST customer service ever. I went to ask for some soy sauce and a small plastic ramekin and was turned away unless I ordered more food. When I tried reasoning with the lady, she was very rude and dismissive and ignored me completely. By the way, this is the same place that has had various health code violations. Unless you want food that might make you sick or with an extremely rude person behind the counter, eat elsewhere. This is my third order here and I am really highly satisfied and I recommend this Chinese restaurant. Imagine so many vegetables like mushrooms, young corn, snow peas, carrots, broccoli and lots of jumbo shrimps. The shrimps tasted very fresh and very soft. The sauce is not salty and in fact you can taste the real flavor of light garlic sauce with no sign of soy sauce. I waited for less than 15 minutes. Very authentic Chinese food. My wife enjoyed it and said great. Definitely will order next time. It was Imperial Shrimp. This is better than fancy and expensive restaurants. read more

We stumbled upon it by accident after years of enduring the bland torture that is Hunan delight and have found a great takeout place in Shang Hai. The pork fried rice is great and their chicken wings are also really really good. We've ordered here a couple of times and each time the lady at the counter is so pleasant and sweet and the food never disappoints. Best of all, they Deliver! Not every dish is very good, but some of the dishes are truly excellent. It's just a bit of trial and error figuring out which dishes those are. When you consider the portions are huge, the prices are very reasonable. I also like supporting a small local business. For take out in Olney this is the place to go. Food has been consistently delicious. Delivery is usually about 45 minutes but always hot when it arrives. They are not on grub hub so you need to do it old school and call them for delivery. Good prices with good food. read more
