I saw their post about Sakura Macarons on Instagram and had to try them for myself. The post mentioned that the macarons were available for a limited time only (until April 30th). I stopped by the shop yesterday just before they closed and bought one of each of the Sakura Macarons (red bean and cherry jam flavors). The macarons were a bit pricey at $4.25/ea. I liked both but my favorite was the Sakura Macaron with cherry jam. It wasn't too sweet and a little tart just the way I like it. The service was great. I'm happy the lady behind the counter still took my order even though they were closing. The ambiance is cool. Came back and ordered a matcha latte and chicken katsu sandwich. This was made perfectly and tasted delicious! The chicken katsu sandwich was mayo heavy for me. I actually had to use a fork to scrape a lot of the mayo off. The bread was soft, the meat was good, and the potato salad was tasty. I just wish there was more tonkatsu sauce and less mayo on the actual sandwich. The two girls working that day were both so kind and friendly! I had the ice chai latte which was refreshing and you could taste the chai which is a big deal to me. For desserts we had the mango pudding, chestnut cream cake, and green tea tiramisu. The best dessert amongst me and my friends was the mango pudding. It was very refreshing especially for a nice day. There was a little mango pieces in it which made it tastier.The chestnut cream cake was decent. There was nothing spectacular about it to make it stand out. The green tea tiramisu was pretty decent after a few bites it was really good. I will say it's an acquired taste. Service was quick and the ambience was perfect. The desserts at Cafe Japon are good. The service is meh - as some other reviewers have mentioned. I went here last week and bought a slice of cake "to go." There was a tip jar sitting on the counter - it was completely empty & abandoned - I assumed it was for dining in or large orders. I bought a slice of strawberry shortcake. As I was leaving, the cashier asked me if I needed a bag. I said sure, that'd be helpful. She takes the cake and flips it upside down - completely ruining the beautiful presentation. While I cannot read minds (unfortunately) I gave her a sly glance; she seemed to derive some sort of satisfaction from demolishing the cake. lol. I shrugged. No tip I guess.... I would recommend going to another vendor in the market. There's just one worker as the cashier and barista, so the wait is pretty long. I got a hot matcha latte. While it was pretty affordable and I liked that it wasn't sweetened, I was quite disappointed. During COVID-19 as of April 2021: I've been frequenting this little bakery/cafe inside Industry City's Japan Village when in Sunset Park. It's convenient for a quick to-go lunch and when I am craving my pastime favorite: Japanese pork katsu sando. What I like about their sando is the portion is hefty so the price is reasonable for $6. The pork katsu is the winner as it is always moist which causes the condensation inside the plastic container. Unfortunately because of that (and they are not made on spot), the white bread and katsu breading become soggy. The flavors, however, are still apparent and the taste is consistent. Besides the sando (they also have chicken), I like their yuzu matcha lemonade (do not have expectations of the presentation compared to the sample photo of how it should look like). Mine always had 95% matcha and 5% yuzu layer. The taste, however, is refreshing. Their matcha shortbreads are heavenly and they also sell Panya baked goods here (from St. Mark's Pl). Someone let the owner know they spelled Japan wrong! Kidding, must have been done purposely. Upon entering Japan Village, this is the first vendor you see and the desserts looked amazing. I definitely was counting on coming back for dessert, but made the mistake of not ordering anything then. When I got back from trying out all the other food in the food hall, they were sold out of a good handful of their pastries I had my eyes on. Oh well. I got their Tiramisu, Cheese Soufflé, and a loaf of Chocolate Marble Cake. The Tiramisu and Cheese Soufflé were really good. The Chocolate Marble Cake was not as sweet as I would have liked it to be, but maybe they used pure cacao to make it, who knows. Would have like it to be sweeter. It seemed like a good deal for $6. The bread was a bit soggy. The pork cutlet was not crispy. The only good thing was that the crusts were cut off and pork cutlet was not dry. As well as cakes and desserts. There is seating around the booth. There price includes Strawberry Shaved Ice was average. Strawberry puree located at the very bottom, then shaved ice, topped with more strawberry purée and condense milk in a cup. The shaved ice in the middle of the cup has no flavor or purée making it super plain. Matcha Latte comes unsweetened. When you pick up your drink, there is a sugar station with sugar packet or simple syrup you can add. Whole milk is also available there. Orange juice is literally pulp for $3.75. read more

I ordered a strawberry matcha latte that taste like strawberry milk. Did not have a strong matcha taste nor did it look anything like the pic posted. It was very disappointing. The service was poor, based on how my drink was made. My husband said if she was dedicated to her job then your drink wouldn't taste like crap. Which I understood because my business was an inconvenienced to the worker. As I was waiting for my drink, I saw her ignore customers and focus on bagging cookies. When a kind man got the worker attention. To kindly inform her that someone was standing at the register. The staff looked at the lady at the register and rolled her eyes at the man. This should've been my sign to get a refund on this overprice drink and run away. My advice is go far far far away from this place. A Simple and cute little dessert place in the middle of industry city Asian market . We tried three different Dingos( Mitarashi, strawberry and Kaniko ) ... My fav. was the Mitarashi, the strawberry was a bit too sweet for me and the kaniko was a bit under flavored for me but all were a nice little easy snack or quick on the go lunch. We had the worst cake we've ever had here which is fine- we don't have to love everything we eat. This 1/5 star rating is for their staff and manager Alex. They somehow managed to give a horrible customer experience at a cute Japanese dessert place- here's how they did it: 1. After we complained about a stale cake, they had us wait 10 minutes before coming back to talk to us (during that time, one was folding boxes and the other was typing on his phone) 2. When they finally came back, they did not address our complaint and just said if you want to buy something else I can help you with that. 3. The employee got really annoyed at us, gave us an attitude, even suggested that we 'microwave the cake over there' and then walked away from us. I'm sorry the cake was stale and the place was poorly run- otherwise it would've been a pleasant visit to Japan Village. Proceed with caution. read more
