Pandemic Experiences 2020-2021 Cafe Landwer is located in Cleveland Circle where the movie theater used to be.  Or was it the Applebee's? Well either way, folks familiar with the area would understand what I'm talking about. This is the second location of the chain in the area, with the first being Brookline. Both are T accessible along the C line. They make it easy to place an order online, though they do require a phone number that takes texts in addition to an email address. The delivery charge is waived for orders $50 or more.  But you can also order takeout, with curbside being a valid option. By curbside, they mean the alleyway between them and Sushi Momento, or the drive in towards the hotel (AC Hotels Marriott), which is marked by a traffic light. Note, you can't make any changes on their online ordering system once you've confirmed and paid. It was my first time patronizing Cafe Landwer, so I decided to try one of their shakshukas (the one with halloumi $15, which comes with tahini, l seeabne, a choice of bread (multigrain) and a side (green vegetables)) and added an order of their sweet potato fries for $4. Since it was to go, I ordered the eggs hard. Everything was packed into a separate container (though the bread was in a white paper bag) and tucked into a nice tote with their logo on it. I wish the containers were reusable. However, for eating on the go, something more tossable (as these were) would be preferred. The loaf was a generous portion, great for dipping into the spiced tomato sauce. The halloumi cheese was firm and savory, though a bit soggy on the outside. The fries were soft and room temp by the time I got it home, so I tossed it into the toaster oven for a bit. The best part of the meal was the green vegetables, with a good portion of firm string beans, good sized broccoli florets, and garlicky spinach having been sauteed together in garlic oil. On my next visit, I ordered the smoked eggplant $9 which came in the same size container as that of one of their side dishes, and was accompanied by one round of fluffy pita, and a half portion of their Nutella rosalach $6. The eggplant spread was cool in temperature and the smokiness was quite evident. The honey was a nice touch. The Nutella rosalach pastry came 10 pieces to the order, and was delicious, because Nutella. But the pastry had been rolled so thin that it has a rather chewy consistency, and it had been overbaked and was burnt on the bottom. It ought not to have been served, but the manager took care of me when I let her know this, so I felt that they took responsibility for their product. *** Cafe Landwer has a Kid's Menu with several kid friendly entrees (pasta, chicken tenders, cheese pizza (gluten free available), mini hamburgers, and mac & cheese) for under $10, accompanied by freshly cut vegetables (carrots, cucumber, mini tomatoes), and (for the less carby options) a side of fries. Since they no longer have marshmallows, I suggested that they update the photos on their online ordering system to reflect this. The chicken tenders were rather thin, planklike pieces, and were white meat, so I was surprised that they were not too dry. We were pleased that a swap of the fries for a side of green vegetables was allowed without a change in price. The veggie sticks looked fresh enough, however there were only 4 pieces each of the carrots and cucumber. This was much fewer than was pictured on the menu, but I'm sure would please their kiddie diners much more than the parents. On another visit, their kids menu halloumi sticks were 6 floppy planks to the order with a generous portion of marinara sauce (of which much was used to cut the saltiness of the cheese), but it was unfortunately missing the veggie sticks (which would had also helped to tame the saltiness). When I called to inquire, apologies were said, and I let it go at that since I wasn't about to head back in the rain. *** A side order of their falafel were $4 for 4 crusty little balls of flavor. Crispy brown on the outside, vibrant green within. They were pretty good on their own, even without a side of hummus for dipping. From their breakfast menu (which lingers into the afternoon), Breakfast Waffle $10 blueberry strawberry banana maple syrup whipped cream. These Belgian style waffles were 3 vanilla scented crisp airy pastries. The menu on their website has changed up some, with the price of most of their sides going up 50 cents to $4.50 *** The Oreo rosalach pastry arrived 12 pieces to the full order (math not working here). It wasn't burnt, but rather it was under baked - the center bit of dough was gooey. I guess they don't give their staff authority to make things up to the customer, cause she nicely offered to tell the kitchen, but a manager would have to handle anything else. They bring you a lot of food for an affordable price (especially when it comes to boston brunch). Be sure to add a reservation in advance as Sunday mornings can be pretty busy. We're from California and were visited family in Boston. They recommended this place for a good breakfast. I agree, it is amazing.

Café Landwer is an Israeli run and Mediterranean style establishment having roots in pre-war Berlin and named after the owner, Moshe Landwer. In addition to the 80 locations across Israel, there are three in Massachusetts, one in California, and four in Canada. The feel of the restaurant is a classy, but casual French-European café style. Their menu is fairly extensive and has a variety of both Mediterranean-European style dishes such as their Falafel Hummus Bowl and Landwer's Famous Schnitzel as well as more American type dishes such as their Corned Beef Sandwich and their Chicken & Pesto Pasta. We arrived about 10:45 on a Monday for brunch. The hostess asked us if we had a reservation, but seated us immediately despite the fact that we did not. They were fairly busy, but we were shocked that we would need a reservation for this time of day and day of the week. We got the Mediterranean Breakfast, sides of scrambled eggs and turkey bacon, a Mocha, and a regular brewed coffee. Their set breakfast is very big and was beautifully presented. We substituted Hallah for the bread choice. Many people think that eggs are pretty standard, but the quality varies and it is rare to get scrambled eggs that taste really good. Landwer's scrambled eggs were just ok. We forgot to ask for the turkey bacon crisp and it was also just ok--given the quality of the turkey bacon, it probably would have been pretty good crispy. The Mocha was actually really good. It tasted more like a light hot chocolate, not too sweet, than a coffee. Their brewed standard coffee was just ok. The flavor was good, but was a little bitter. If not for the bitterness, it would have been an excellent cup of coffee. We were expecting a little more from the coffee given that Landwer started as a coffee house and ran as merely a coffee factory for a period of time in the chain's history. Our server was polite, but not that attentive and forgot some of our requests throughout the meal. He was also difficult to flag down for the check at the end of the meal. He was somewhat busy, but not enough to justify the level of service. Still, he was very nice when we had his attention. If you check the other reviews, most of the complaints are for mistakes and problems with takeout orders. Additionally, even in most of the good reviews, people had to wait for a table. Consequently, your best bet might be to dine-in and consider making a reservation even if you think it is not necessary for the day and time you plan to visit here. There is street parking in the area. Some days and hours are free (check the meters and posted signs). At other times, download the "Passport" parking app and get the zone and space number from the meter for the easiest payment method. There is also a metered lot down the street at the nearest intersection. If you get there before 10:45, there is the best chance to get a spot in the lot. Overall and given the mixed quality of our experience, the four-star Yelp average is about right for this place. We would go back here again, but might try some different dishes and perhaps the more Mediterranean style ones the restaurant is probably known for in the future. read more

Best place in Cleveland circle to grab a bite, enjoy a coffee or schedule a business-lunch/brunch. They are flexible to an extreme, the food is delicious, the service is excellent...definitely try their cafe Landver tea and their date shake. Their shakshukas are so yummy, they manage to do gluten free, and I never react, a great place with a comfortable atmosphere! I often spring an additional five humans on them after I arrive, they never bat an eyelash. Separate bills, still they don't bat an eyelash! They are amazing! read more

My friend and I dropped by this Israeli cafe in Cleveland circle. The cafe has a nice little outdoor patio and they also have a QR code for you to scan to see the menu so you can order online. We ordered multigrain bread and falafel for appetizers. The multigrain bread was still hot from the oven. It was very fresh. The falafel was still crunchy and had a good amount of spices. For my entree, I got the roasted mushrooms and cream pasta with fettucine. It came with a bit of truffle oil. It was pretty good although I wish the sauce was a little bit thicker and creamier. read more

Food was excellent. Service was deplorable. The service problem was that they hire young, inexperienced waitstaff and fail to train them. With the restaurant only three quarters full and a dozen members of the waitstaff wandering the floor, service was atrocious. There was no sign that anyone in the place had a sense of what waiting tables required at a minimum. Truly disappointing, but not the fault of the individual waiters/waitresses. Finally came here for beunch my daughter's 21st birthday celebration. They did a really good job on the eggs Benedicts I had mine with salmon and it was delicious. Portions of this decent they come up with these huge home fries. I loved my matcha latte which was humongous and it's a size of a soup bowl. It is a very popular place for residents and students nearby and you definitely need a reservation in advance. Highly recommend for a bright happy environment. Slightly dressed up diner food, with a Mediterranean-centered menu that covers all the basics and all the preferences (including a whole section devoted to vegan dishes). The times I've come here, the dishes have erred on the salty side and I usually have to pound a few glasses of water at home. I probably wouldn't wait in line for Cafe Landwer but the location is super convenient and situated right next to the picturesque Chestnut Hill Reservoir. A note on parking: yes, they have a parking lot out front but between people eating here, the baseball field, and the reservoir, I've never seen a spot open up when I needed one. I usually try my luck on the street-side parking along both the reservoir which tends to be packed on the weekends but I haven't had issues finding something after a few rounds of circling. On to the food: Baba ganoush: love the drizzle of tahini on top without anything overwhelming the actual taste of eggplant. Came with a side of fluffy pita. Best thing I've ordered here. Haloumi salad: was envisioning something besides deep fried chunks of haloumi cheese. And I know I'm nit-picking here but the bell peppers were cut length-wise rather than in smaller chunks, which made it hard to eat without a spear of pepper poking out of the corner of your mouth. Dressing was also extremely sour, way too heavy on the lemon, to the point where the last few bites soaking in the dressing at the bottom were inedible. Kebab: Well-seasoned mix of lamb and beef. I liked the texture (reminded me of the fish balls for hot pot). Food came out quickly, and though our waiter came by to check on us, some smaller things were missed, like the hot water I ordered at the start (maybe places just hate doling out hot water), utensils, and small plates for the baba ganoush. All in all, not bad. If I'm ever in the mood for pancakes and breakfast potatoes, I know where to go. read more

I have been coming here a ton this year. For all things really; brunch, lunch, dinner, and to grab a coffee and study. This place has been my go to spot. They also have a great contactless ordering system. You scan a QR code at your table and then you can order and pay through this site that they have. This is super convenient as you can order anything whenever you feel like right at your table and they'll bring it to you when it's ready. The coffees are great and the larges are ginormous, almost enough to last me up to 3 hours. The food is all fantastic as well. Ranging from their hummus bowls to their shakshuka and their entrees as well. I think my favorite is their Airies sandwich. They are small bite sized pieces of beef and lamb wrapped in some breading. The meat to breading ratio is perfect and the flavors go amazingly with the tahini and harissa sauce they include. You can not go wrong with anything you order here. My only mini complaint is that there aren't many small bites. Other than getting a side of fries, a soup, or a croissant everything is entree sized which is quite big and filling. I only wish there were more smaller options for when I just want to snack while drinking a coffee and studying. Like maybe a smaller version of the hummus bowls that are almost half to size. Like I said the hummus is great but the normal bowls are just too much when you aren't that hungry. The staff are always super nice and accommodating. They have free WiFi and tons of outlets all over the place making it very nice for studying. The music they play is also great. It's not too loud that you can't put headphones on and ignore it yourself but it also covers up the small conversations of other people if you don't want to put headphones on but also don't want to get distracted. On a better day I'd give 4-5 stars as the food is an A but the service was 1-2 star. The upside is our waiter was polite and admitted he was brand new. When we arrived our hostess told us there is a 25 min but it wound up being only 5 as there was a lot of open tables. Not too busy but after we sat down in about 20 min it got very busy. I finished my shakshouka before my son got his pancakes. He was fine about the wait because they were delicious. I had to ask for plain coffee because still no drinks were served before my entree. The shakshouka didn't disappoint but I think it sat out probably because they were waiting for the whole order. I came here on a Saturday afternoon for some pancakes with a friend and I left inspired to come back again and again. First off parking was EASY as there is a lot literally right next door. You do have to feed the meter but there weren't many cars there. I'm going to nitpick here, but they say us down at a pretty small table for two. There were two of us, but they did ask if we're dining and it was a pretty small table to fit dishes on comfortably. It was better suited for drinks or solo dining. We ate outside and there was ample seating (maybe 25 to 30 seats). Our server was great and they preface it was their third day on the job, which is nice to know in case they made any mistakes. He didn't though! We both ordered pancakes, which were soft and tasty, but I didn't like how they serve them in these small skillet pans. I like to butter and cut my pancakes up before I take a bite (you all know way too much about me, btw...) and the skillet pans made that impossible. I ordered eggs and turkey bacon on the side, eggs were good, but I wasn't a fan of the turkey bacon as I like it extra crispy and I don't think it's possible with turkey bacon. At least not with the turkey bacon they offered. They also have a separate dining room with a projector screen. Interior: 4 stars, SUPER cute place, but the booth we sat in was terribly cracked and hurt the back of my legs since I was in shorts! Coffee: 5 stars- delish, we got a cappuccino and macchiato! I would come back for the coffee, i thought it was wonderful. Food: 2.5 stars-personally, I had high hopes but didn't love my shashuka. My partner however, enjoyed his but remarked that there was something lacking. The challah that came with the shashukas were tasty! The salad is nice and fresh, but they do drown it in its lemony dressing, so once I got to the bottom I had to stop eating it because it was so sour. Pitas to die for! Went there on a weekday night so there was no wait. Usually on weekend mornings every time I've tried to go there's been too long of a wait. Food was so fresh and good. The pitas were so warm and soft I could eat like 10. Hummus was amazing. Coffee was good too! I got the cappuccino and my boyfriend got the Turkish coffee which was very bitter and probs not for everyone. Was fun to try though! I'm sad to write this because I love Cafe Landwer overall, but this location is really a hit or miss, often more of a miss recently. I typically go here for their drinks (lattes and chai tea lattes!) and occasionally lunch/dinner. However recently I have been having watered down drinks, especially the chai lattes. The service has been spotty too. Today I went in and saw people waiting outside, despite there being plenty of tables inside and out. The manager was turning people away saying the kitchen was short staffed, which I can understand. I was going to just order a drink (the coffee bar had staff) and asked if I could sit to drink my coffee (maybe going to get another drink and figured I could at least tip the servers) but was rudely turned away. I explained my intentions, but the manager said no and walked away. Not even an apology or explanation for the rationale, which would have at least been decent. Great service and location. Definitely get the pita, and if you're into it, the pita with zataar. I love dipping, so maybe next time I would get more things for dipping. The three of us, myself, wife, and a cousin went for brunch here and sat at the delightful outdoor patio area (Cleveland Circle). We ordered the iced tea, chicken salad, avocado tartine, and chicken schnitzel sandwich. All items were fresh, tasty and with quality ingredients. I thought they were especially generous with the grape tomatoes and the chicken in the chicken salad. The chicken Schnitzel was moist and not greasy, but I couldn't really taste the aioli. It came with a microscopic portion of pickled torshi. My wife liked the avocado tartine . The iced tea - despite the hype - was nothing that special. Portions were reasonable, especially the chicken salad, but less so for the avocado tartine. Check out the photos and make your own decision. Prices were, of course, a little on the high side, but given the location, friendly staff, and wonderful outdoor dining area, I didn't think prices were insultingly high. Let me start by saying I love Landwer and it has been a long time since I've made it to one. Last night we met friends we had not seen in years for a reunion The service was awful. We felt like we were under a cloak of invisibility. Staff looked past us constantly and even as we tried to get someone's attention it was as if we were not there The food was, as expected, tasty. And once we were able to flag someone down to order it came in a reasonable Amount of time. The dishes were then ignored for over an hour even as we tried to get someone's attention to clear. The coffee ordered by a member of our party took over 20 minutes to come. We decided to order a dessert and then had to ask three more times if it was going to come. I've had such great experiences trying Mediterranean food, so when o read the reviews about Cafe Landwer in Brookline, MA, I was excited to try the food. First, the staff is amazing. So friendly, caring and all so eager to make your experience great. You can order on your phone from your table or live, which is a nice feature. While visiting a friend in Boston I stopped by Cafe Landwer to try their Rosalach. My friend and I tried to go to the cafe for brunch on marathon weekend and unfortunately we had to go to another place because they were so busy! So be warned, this is a popular cafe on the weekends. If you're planning to go during peak brunch hours, I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The Rosalach were worth coming back for though! I got them as takeout and while I wish I could have sat down and enjoyed them with Cafe Landwer's amazing coffee, they were still good to-go style! I got the Nutella ones and they took about 15 minutes after I ordered. They're not on the regular menu, but if you look online you can find the cookie butter and Nutella options with the additional option to do a half order. All in all a great experience. Completely unacceptable. Landwer automatically writes in a tip at the end of service. They add it to your bill. Dont believe me? go to their website right now and do a pickup order. They put it under service tip. You cant force people to pay a tip, Its optional. I always do however tip but automatically adding it to a receipt is ridiculous. What if we end up with really bad service if a waitress is having a bad day? We still have to auto tip 3.50 for 20 bucks even if they dont deserve it? Cafe Landwer was delicious! This was my first time here and we went for brunch. We ordered the Mediterranean Shakshouka, the Turkey Bacon Benedict, and the Landwer's Pancakes. The shakshouka was tangy and savory from the tomatoes with two perfect poached eggs. The pita was delicious and went so well with the dish, and I drizzled the sides of tahini and greek yogurt into the shakshouka. It was tangy, creamy, nutty, and so filling! I ordered a side of the potatoes and those were SO good. They were chunky whole potatoes smashed open, so crispy and well-seasoned on the outside and very tender on the inside. The Landwer's pancakes are also a must-order. As you can see in the photo they come in a cute little stack in a skillet, with syrup and nutella on the side. I loved the texture of these pancakes as they are fluffy but less buttermilky than a typical American pancake. They tasted very homemade and the nutella was a perfect pairing. The turkey bacon benedict was good - but in my opinion, I definitely think the other two dishes were better. The eggs were poached perfectly and the whole thing sat atop a nice piece of buttery toast, but the bacon was a little tough! Also you must order their lattes here. Very delicious :) read more

This place is great, but I went for lunch today and the waiter decided to put me down for a 20% tip without asking or indicating he would do so. I would have anyways, but make sure you get the receipt from them as he ignored me when I tried to get his attention afterwards and I had to ask the hostess for a copy of the receipt explaining the discrepancy between the amount I was quoted and the amount I was charged. read more

The second I walked into this establishment, I knew the meal would be great and waiting about 15-20 minutes for a table was absolutely worth it. The decor is unique, and modern, especially for a restaurant that dishes out Levantine food. The tables are spaced out nicely and the menu is extensive. Marina, our waitress, was great. We ordered from the kids menu as well as the regular menu and loved everything we had. The roasted eggplant & tahini ($10) was absolutely awesome and featured an entire eggplant cooked in an iron skillet with some tahini drizzled on top and some pita bread. Simple but perfectly executed, it was terrific in every way. The Jerusalem lentil soup ($10) felt a tad expensive and came very under seasoned but was tasty once I added a touch of salt. It was pretty good and was on the healthy but very flavorful side of things. The hummus bowl with falafel ($16) was awesome and tasted incredibly fresh. It featured four falafel balls - which could very well be the best I've had - and it was awesome for sharing. It also came with two pitas. Lastly, we also ordered the famous chicken schnitzel ($19) which was pretty good. Pounded incredibly thin, it was crispy and tasty. The fries that came with it were excellent. Overall it was a delightful experience all around and we can't wait to return. I totally understand why this internal chain started in Germany (and later rebooted in Tel Aviv) is successful and thriving. The food is super fresh, there's a ton of options, and execution all around is terrific. So wether you're looking to get coffee, a salad, some shakshuka, some shawarma, and many other things in between including eggs Benedict or pancakes, this place has you covered. read more

Y'all, I can't. The one joy we have as healthcare workers right now is food. I made the mistake of recommending here again because maybe it was a one off? Sometimes you catch people on a bad day. So the work colleagues and us order. First of all, their delivery radius doesn't get to SEMC, so we have to order through doordash now (which increases the price even more). We're legitimately 0.9 miles away from Cleveland circle, what gives? We call up the restaurant and they can't explain why we're out of their delivery circle. Always a pleasure eating there! Great vibe and great food! I especially like the salmon Benedict.

This place is great for brunch but not so much for dinner! A lot of their classics like rosalach and shakshuka were out of stock by the time dinner hit. The pasta and eggplant with tahini still tasted great, but I think the brunch vibe here would be more lit and have more of the dishes I was wanting to try here. read more

We made a reservation on a Sunday afternoon, and while we were early for the reservation, we still waited a good 10 minutes after that for a seat. It was busy, so I definitely recommend making a reservation. We started with the fried halloumi with their tzatziki dip. I was not a fan of the dip, but thankfully, the halloumi is flavorful enough to be eaten on its own. Apparently, they are famous for their chicken schnitzel, so remembering days when my mom would make us some, I took a chance and ordered it. It was perfect. Schnitzel can get dry, but this was not, and it was not over or under-seasoned, which can also be an issue. The fries were just what I was looking for, but maybe a potato salad instead or an addition of cole slaw would have been a nice touch. I like that they offer a pot of tea with loose leaf and not a weak tea bag. I will most likely try this again in a few weeks when family comes into town for the holidays. read more
