We shared the Winter salad to start, which was delicious with very fresh lettuce and a flavorful dressing. My Mom opted for the Shitake Mushroom Dumplings, which were delicious, and I had the Lemon sole. They have a full bar, curated wine list and several non-alcoholic beverage options. I opted for a sparking hibiscus and rose drink that was very unusual and good. Farmstead remains one of my go to restaurants when I'm in town as the food is locally sourced and dependable, the service is excellent and the space is intimate. It's a great local spot! read more

Racism experienced. I am deeply disturbed by an experience I had following a visit to this establishment on Tuesday evening. I dined there with four friends. We were seated promptly, the service was pleasant, and our waitress was kind and attentive. We paid our bill and left without any issues. The following day, I called the restaurant because I realized I had forgotten something there. During that call, the person who answered unexpectedly told me she had been "meaning to call" because a chair at our table had been found broken, stating that "the leg looked like it was ripped off." I was completely unaware of any damage. No one in my party had mentioned anything to me. I responded that perhaps the chair had simply suffered wear and tear, but she insisted that it had been "torn off." The tone of the conversation felt accusatory and uncomfortable. When I asked what exactly she was implying or intending, she backed away from the accusation and stated only that the chair had been left against the wall. For context, the group I was with consisted of four Nigerian visitors -- including two priests, a nun, and a friend, one of whom had graduated from Boston College the day before. I am Caucasian. After I got off the phone, I became increasingly upset as I reflected on the interaction. I could not help but wonder whether the accusation was influenced by the fact that I was dining with Black guests from another country. It felt unnecessary and unfair to single us out over a chair that may very well already have been weakened or damaged before it finally broke. Later, I spoke with my friends about it. The nun recalled that the chair had felt wobbly when she stood up and that she had leaned it against the wall because it seemed unstable. When the subject came up, the room became very quiet. I could sense the discomfort and sadness from them -- the familiar feeling of being viewed differently or unfairly judged. Sadly, this is not a new experience for many people of color, including friends of mine. I truly believe that had this been a group of all Caucasian patrons -- especially regular customers -- this issue would likely never have escalated into a phone call with insinuations and accusations. I called twice and left messages asking the owner, Erika, to contact me. I never received a response. I even returned to the restaurant in person today and was assured that Erika would call me after staff spoke with her directly. As of 8:30 tonight, I still have not heard from her. At the end of the day, chairs do not usually "rip apart" spontaneously unless there was already weakness or damage present. What troubles me most is not the chair itself, but the way this situation was handled and the assumptions that seemed to accompany it. read more

WHY IS THIS PLACE A 3 STAR?!? This place was absolutely AMAZING and was perfect in almost every way. Let's start on the decor, it's simple, yet it stays with a modern theme that I love. And for all of those people that say there's no music, lemme say that there was and while yes, it was quiet but it was, in fact audible. Our server was probably the nicest and most chill man I've ever seen and was constantly asking is our food was good, if we needed anything ect. He was great and wished us a good night after we were done. Finally the food, the menu was sparse but I ordered an eggplant thing and it was amazing. The flavor was perfect and the sauce was smoky yet sweet. The texture was also not tough but not soft. It was the most perfect thing I've ever had. Now my only complaint is that the outside is a bit un colorful, but that goes along with the theme so it's fine. This was my first time visiting Farmstead Table and it was incredible. I loved this quaint, small restaurant tucked away in Newton Centre. The food was outstanding. We went here for dinner last night and the host was able to seat us right away. The interior is quaint and light with simple, yet cute decor and the atmosphere was relaxed and professional. They had just switched over to a brand new Spring menu which had a lot of creative and thoughtful options. We went with the blistered spring pea and black garlic hummus dish and two asparagus tacos to start. Wow! So much flavor in both of these dishes. The spring peas were fresh and succulent and the black garlic hummus was to die for. The tacos were chock-full with perfectly cooked veggies and so many diverse ingredients. We love eating seasonally and these two dishes checked that box. For our mains, we had the halibut and the prosciutto-wrapped chicken. Both of these were seasoned and cooked perfectly. We wrapped the meal with the chocolate bread pudding with amaretto caramel sauce. It was really hard to determine the best bite of the night as every dish was so unique, flavorful, and prepared perfectly. I have to mention that their wines by the glass are the best I've had in the Boston area. We had a white Burgundy, a rosé from Rhone, and a red from Rhone and they were all magnificent. Top marks for these excellent selections. Our server Jacob was professional, attentive, informative, and really personable. The food and drinks arrived at a nice pace. BEWARE of spoiled meat. We placed a large order for a dinner party. At $32+ per entree this is not an inexpensive meal. Shortly after eating, but before she noticed the discoloration, my guest said her meal tasted off and was nauseous and sick to her stomach, vomiting. Upon investigation we were grossed out and shocked to have been served (blueish/gray) spoiled meat, which had already been cooked, cut, spread and packaged by their chef. What is worse is that when I called farmstead to report the issue I was instructed to email Ericka but never even got so much as a response. So much for caring about your repeat customers. I used to recommend this restaurant to friends and now feel that I need to warn them about visiting instead. We had to wait a while to pickup our food although we called several hours ahead. We were all happy and loved the decor and the food and the vibe. The only thing that would be good is if they would let folks just order "eggs and" without having to order everything that they are serving with the eggs. The pork chop was a overcooked, salty mess. A Shake 'n' Bake chop would have tasted better. Unhappy with dinner, at least I could look forward to a delicious dessert, if they offered any. I am vegan and my wife eats everything. For a place that SEEMS to put care into fresh food from a farm, with so many dishes marked for vegetarians, they had nothing at all for vegans and it took 10 minutes of discussions to figure out what tO order off of their small menu. I do not recommend eating here if you are vegan unless they make it a little bit easier, like making some dishes automatically flexible on the menu. LIKE ADDING TOFU OR ADDING CHICKEN. The waitress didn't even know what vegetable proteins they could give me, and of course suggested that I get the salad, which she called A large size but it really wasn't large I ended up getting it as an appetizer and it was pretty basic just some lettuce some apples and some nuts. If that was all I had I would have been really disappointed but then she finally mentioned the word avocado that was already included in a dish. I won't be going back unless they make the menu easier for a vegan person to order something. This is 2022,in a liberal suburb, so it shouldn't have been so hard for them to realize this is not the year 2000. The waitress finally figured out that they could make the brussel sprout tacos without cheese. And then when I asked her what apps could I eat she mentioned something else with brussel sprouts. The chef even came out to personally confirm my restrictions. My dad and I had a bad experience at Farmstead Table. From the moment the hostess/manager (Erica / Erika, spelling?) greeted me when I entered the front door to ask for table for two outside, I felt unwelcomed in a subtle way (you know the difference when someone greets you with a chilly air / attitude vs. when they smile warmly and make you feel welcome - it was definitely a cool / chilly reception to put it nicely). We were denied sitting at a table with an umbrella (it seated four), as we were only a party of two. This alone was fine with us, as they explained the reservation / party size seating policy to us. What was NOT OK was that they later allowed a party of two (who showed up after us) to sit there. A party of three who showed up quite a bit after us actually received their food before we did. My dad, who is usually a very mellow guy, became visibly upset. We had waited for a long time. The manager explained that was because our steak salad took longer to prepare. We clearly asked for steak to be "medium" and it was tough as boots. The chef did come out at some point to apologize and offered to cook us another steak, but that would be a waste, and we are not wasteful people. We ate the "leather", as it's still protein, and we were hungry, but it wasn't good. We ate the other dishes, so as not to waste food, and they were fine, but nothing to write home about. The only redeeming part of our visit to Farmstead Table was that they did not charge us for the dishes that we ordered (burrata, moules frites, and steak salad) because of the bad experience. Just to clarify, our server was a pleasant guy, no attitude. He was working very hard, keeping quite busy between the tables. We left him a generous tip, as I firmly believe he deserved a tip. I work very hard during the week, pay my taxes, and give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm not a freeloader, and I'm not a trust-fund baby - I earn every cent that I spend. I simply will not put up anymore with unwelcoming attitude from restaurant staff - weekends are too short for that. I used to internalize the negative feelings and "swallow" them, but I'm done with that - I will firmly voice my opinion and feelings now. Just because I may seem soft-spoken at first doesn't mean I'm soft or a push-over - don't make assumptions and don't stereotype! I know that as a group, restaurant staff work very hard, but individually speaking, some of them need to learn to do better (Erica / Erika - be nicer OK? To every customer, don't make certain customers feel unwelcome from the get-go and then continue to make matters worse with non-empathetic explanations of why things went awry). I will not return to Farmstead Table, and I will even say that this bad lunch experience has cast a shadow over my impression of Newton Center. I won't be returning to Newton Center anytime soon. I will travel eastward on the Green Line for my dining experiences. These sore feelings cannot be repaired. Once a bubble has burst, there it goes. read more

Yummy! I would definitely come back. The vibe is a classy farm-to-table establishment. Service was a bit slow that night because some waitstaff were unfortunately absent for a last second reason, and we felt bad for our waiter who was definitely struggling to handle all the tables. We ordered: 1. popovers (yummy - also maybe, wouldn't get this for dinner again because it was served with jam and butter, which didn't make much sense as an app) 2. garlic mussels - delicious! served with a few grilled baguette slices, and as usual the mussels had a delicious white wine based sauce hiding beneath the pile of yum 3. I had a hangar steak medium rare, which was served with a fresh chimichurri sauce, next to a bed of polenta decorated with a medley of rainbow carrots. I think I was expecting it to come with something like toast points to spread the soft cheese on, so when it did not, the low ratio of green to dairy seemed off. Jonah Crab Toast $14 brioche, whipped avocado, olive tapenade The popular (among the table) crab toast was a thick brick of eggy toast topped with a generous spread of the avocado and tapenade, with a fluffy scoop of white crab beneath a mound of leafy greens. It was a rather filling option after the shared course. The blintzes arrived as two slender tubes, which seemed minuscule a portion to a pair of eyes used to that of NYC delis, but were deemed a tastier version. The steak tips were on the tough side unfortunately, with potatoes crisp with a hint of heat. I realized belatedly that the mentioned asparagus were totally missing. Sadness. This was an unfortunate miss. Though we may had lingered a tad too long for the comfort of the staff hoping to seat another larger waiting party in our little corner of the restaurant, we were nontheless never made unwelcome. We had dinner on their patio last night. We had a bunch of appetizers: the fried eggplant, mushroom toast, melon salad, and bok choy. All was good except the bok choy which I felt was too charred (and the bulb part undercooked). We also had the mussels which were good. All of that, plus two beers, was over $90, which seems like a lot. We had good service, and their outside seating is nice. It's a good but expensive option in Newton Center. read more
