Loved the vibe and food here at landwer. Really great breads. Desserts are so good especially the babkas and the halva ice cream was too die for!! Enough for four moderately hungry people or for really really hungry two people!! We were wise to do Yelp wait list before coming here. Otherwise expect a long wait time. It's pretty busy! The service can improve tremendously. Our waiter wasn't interested and was doing a poor job. We came here one weekday after work and the place was packed. I'd recommend using the waitlist feature on yelp so you don't get stuck waiting for a table. For an appetizer we ordered the Sabbich Bowl and I think it was the highlight of the meal. There was so much flavour in the bowl with the egg, roasted potatoes, and eggplant with so many sauces on top. Every bite was bursting with flavour and no too bites were the same. The bread was also really fresh with a nice chewy texture. For my main course I got a Shawarma Plate and I was quite happy with it. The chicken and the rice were both seasoned very well, but I would have liked some vegetables in the dish. My partner ordered a Sinia Kebab and we were shocked by how big it was. The bread bowl was really filling and she had no chance of finishing all the food. The beef skewers and the vegetables inside the bowl were all bursting with flavour. The side salad was really fresh and a nice addition to the meal. Overall we had a great experience here. All the food was delicious, the prices were very reasonable, and the portions were just what we needed. The staff are all friendly and the service was good. I have only been here once for lunch, but the shakshouka was really good. I got it with the foccacia bread which reminded me of garlic naan. There was garlic on the bread and it was big and round and flat, and the bread itself was nice and fluffy/spongey. I had ordered the shakshouka with eggplant and feta. The feta is on the salty side. I've seen this restaurant around a few locations and my friend told me they have really good food. I finally gave it a try and was not disappointed. The restaurant is definitely a vibe - the cafe inside looks very cozy and a great place to hang out, read, etc. At this price point, I'd say the food is definitely worth it. I had the rose pasta which was really good! The sauce was very creamy and pasta was cooked nicely. I added some salmon as my protein, but to be honest, the quality of the fish was not that good. It was on the tougher side - though it's only $8 so I'm not really expecting much. I think it's priced accordingly. The value is definitely there but I'm knocking off a star because the service was almost non-existent. For example, server sees we have no water and doesn't refill it without being asked. Came here on a Thursday morning and was seated on the patio after a 10 minute wait. While the food here is good, the service is poor. Starting with service, while the minimal encounters we had were polite, that's about the extent of it. We had to flag our waitress down for every little thing, a spoon for the coffee, milk for coffee, napkins to wipe the coffee spill the server left behind, spoons for the food, the bill, and so on. We never got a single refill on coffee until asking someone. Management also had the patio server training a new hire at the time and didn't send another supporting server which also contributed to the lack of service. For a spot that is known for brunch, the service we got was painfully inefficient and unaware of basic anticipated customer needs. As for the food, the shakshuka was seasoned and cooked well and came with a nice salad, tahini and labneh which brought freshness to the dish. The challah bread was also nice and fluffy. While the food is pretty good, the lack of service was very frustrating and negated any redeeming qualities about the food. read more

Absolutely recommend the Cafe Landwer Downtown location. Excellent food and service. We were in town on vacation and only wish we could have eaten here again. Definitely next trip! We were staying at the Hilton and it was getting late and we really needed to grab some dinner. We headed out and this place was not even a block a way. It was right there and we decided to check it out. It was late so they were no longer seating for inside but offer to place an order for us to go and take back with us. The entire experience was wonderful and such a kind group of They walked us through the menu and we decided to share a Truffle and Mushroom Pizza ($18.95 CAD). It had smoked Mozzarella & mascarpone cheese with marinated mushrooms and Truffle paste. They had me at truffle. In addition to the pizza (upon suggestion) we added a side order some Sweet Potato Fries ($7 CAD) they even through in some cookes for dessert for us. There was a Vegan Double Chocolate cookie and something else. It took several minutes to be ready which was expected but we walked back to the hotel and enjoyed our late dinner in the room. It was all good and that pizza was amazing. Great service, delicious food, and good first impression and overall experience. If you are in the area you should definielty check it out. Just arrived in Toronto and found this on Yelp as it was near my hotel. Very pleased with the wide selection of Mediterranean foods. Sat outside. Excellent and quick service. Reasonably priced. The grilled whole cauliflower served on yogurt/ tahini sauce and feta crumbles and dill was fantastic. A honey anise topping set it off. I had a salmon steak perfectly grilled and served on a crunchy salad containing all sorts of delightful ingredients. Husband had chicken shawarma, hummus, and cucumber and tomato side salad. 3.5 really. On my 3rd attempt to go to Landwer, finally got around to trying it. Wait time was still kind of atrocious (45 mins-1 hr) especially if you don't do the yelp waitlist prior to heading out. I like the vibe of the place, it has a busy yet chill vibe, not really sure how to describe lol. Ordered the Landwer's Famous Schnitzel ($19.95) and the Landwer Sour Cocktail (around $10, don't remember exactly). The schnitzel was quite nice, was my first time trying schnitzel so I thought it was a little thin but taste was it was solid. Potatoes were on the saltier side imo but were ok still. The star for me was the cocktail. I wasn't able to find it on the online menu they have for reference but there was cinnamon, black label, ginger beer, and lemon. Wow was this good. I don't like ginger beer on it's own since I think it's a bit spicy but mixed in with everything else here it was excellent. 3/5 for schnitzel, 5/5 for the cocktail, -0.5 for waittime. read more

First meal in Toronto! And one completely by accident. We were on our way to the Taylor Swift concert (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), needed food, and just picked this random spot because there was no wait and it looked cute and inviting. And it was! There's a nice, unpretentious old worldly vibe inside, and one of us had an espresso martini for the first time in decades because she needed a little energy boost for Tay-Tay. Damn those things are good. For dinner, one of us got the Bolognese and the other one got the sabich bowl. Our kiddo got a pretty sweet looking plate of mac and cheese with a fancy pasta shape (campanelle!) and what looked and tasted like an actual béchamel-based situation. The Bolognese was unfortunately a bit disappointing; while the sauce had a lot of meat, the tomato base was way too acidic, so it tasted slightly off. We loved the sabich bowl except that the poached eggs were slightly undercooked so that was, well, gross. The only major red flag of the evening was the comedy-skit conversation we had with one guy about the "roselah," which took unnecessarily long to both understand and order. We guess that they're freshly made so you can't really pick and choose and it took forever for us to get them when we were already itching to leave, so that was frustrating. When they finally came out (half halvah half nutella), they were good but so hot you could barely enjoy them. This is supposed to be one of their signature things? A little finesse please! Anyway, the craziest part of the night is that we were seated next to another couple also on their way to Taylor Swift (bracelets) and we started chatting with them and the guy told us that the cafe actually started in Israel. We had literally never heard of this place and looked it up afterwards and it's true. AND it turns out that one of our cousin's went to school with an heir of the founder. Apparently there are also some other locations in the US, and we just can't believe that it never was on our radar before. Small world! So even though we had more of a 3.5 star experience, we're rounding up to 4 stars for the personal connection and we'd like to go back to another location at some point. In whichever case, the price is right, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the food is good enough with the potential to (hopefully) be really good. read more

I heard really good things about this cafe and wish I visited before 12pm as most of the brunch food isn't served after 12. It was a nice option to try a different cuisine. The merguez shakshuka was mediocre, the sausages were good but I thought the eggs were supposed to be runny (mine wasn't). The bread that was served with it was okay, nothing special and it wasn't warm which was disappointing. The pancakes were good but nothing special either. So many options to choose from...more cafe type pastries, coffee, teas, and milkshakes and then the assortment of shareables and dinner/lunch dishes. The popular item seemed to be the shakshuka. The challah and pita were both fluffy and fresh. We had to wait about an hour for a seat at lunch, so recommend going early. Seating is limited to 2h, so plenty of time to meet up with friends. They also give you the option of ordering and paying online, although the wait staff did stop by to see if we want to place our order or needed anything. Love this breakfast restaurant. It features a large indoor dining room and an outdoor patio. The decor and ambiance is top notch, featuring many nostalgic furniture and lighting. It's a great space for dates or groups or even dining alone. Highly recommend coming early to beat the crowds! Servers were all masked. They are one of the few places on University Avenue that are opened early. Food wise: I recommend the Landwer's Famous Breakfast which includes an array of flavours. And for a few dollars more, you can upgrade the eggs to their Rustica Omelette - for a more filling meal. I'm a HUGE breakfast fan, so I love all big selection. However, if someone in your party doesn't like breakfast items, their larger menu does have other good like pasta and burgers too. I also recommend trying their freshly squeezed juices. Came here for brunch to try their shakshuka and boy did it deliver. I went for the merguez shakshuka (19.95) that came with sausage, tomatoes, and onions and found it absolutely delicious. This was possibly one of the worst experiences I had dining at a place ever! We put our names on the waitlist at around 11:30am on yelp and waited all the way till 1 ish before I saw our number kept going from 1 back to two. I went in to talk to the host because the wait was ridiculous. She told us that because we didn't check in, they kept putting tables ahead of us, and I was so confused. I wasn't aware you had to check in first, or else they would just keep bumping you down the list as they assumed you weren't there. My understanding is that if you put your name on the waitlist, they will text you when the table is ready. We waited nearly 1 hour and 40 mins before getting the text and only after I checked in. When we went in, they told us that they only had a table outside ready and pointed to the yellow table under the shade. Since it was under the shade we said okay to sitting outside. As we walked over to that table, another server seated someone else there and proceeded to sit us at a table directly under the sun. I told her we were promised that yellow table and she said that there are no other tables inside or outside and I would have to wait some more. At this point it was approaching 2 hours of waiting and I was fed up, so we sat down in the hot sun. There were no physical menus on the table and no one came by telling us what to do. We saw a sign with a qr code on the table and started scanning that to see the menu. We noticed that a lot of the breakfast items were missing like the egg bennies and the shakshoukas. We assumed it was just sold out and proceeded to place our order through the app. It was one of those apps where you can order and pay directly on your phone first. I paid already when I noticed the table in front of us ordering eggs benny with their PHYSICAL MENUS. I waved to our server and told him that we didn't see any of the eggs benny items on the digital menu and we already ordered and paid assuming that the item was so old. Not only did he not apologize, he just flat out told us 'well you should have ordered through me and not through the app, that is just for those who want to pick up and takeout". WHY IS THERE A QR CODE AND AN OPTION TO PAY ONLINE AT A TABLE WHEN IT IS FOR TAKEOUT ONLY?! LIKE WHY WOULD WE TAKEOUT IF WE WAITED 2 HOURS TO BE SEATED?! I saw absolutely no logic to that and I told him that the digital menu was missing items and he didn't care. I asked him to refund me back my online order and give us proper menus so we can order through him. This whole fiasco added on another 30 minutes to our wait for our food. The table that sat at our original yellow table finished eating before we even got our food, and we came at the same time they did. It was absolutely ridiculous. We also had to keep flagging for our water to be refilled too. Let's talk about the food for a bit, I got the farmers breakfast and it was mid. This is my second time dining at landwer and again the food was just mediocre. Nothing too special and of course by the time my food came out, my whole dining experience was already ruined by the messy waiting system and service. I will not be returning here ever! read more

You come in and place your name on a Yelp waitlist (but now I'm thinking we can do this prior to physically going there?). Took about 45 minutes for a table (ate around 1 PM). The cafe is packed and fun. I got the famous shakshuka which was delicious (flavorful and filling)! I was also impressed with just how large the menu is. They were out of 95% of their pastries unfortunately, so didn't get to try anything else. Cute decor! Went for dinner with a friend. Definitely recommend one of their popular dishes like Shakshukas. I ordered the Halloumi Shakshuka with spinach and deep-fried halloumi cheese. While my friend had the Merguez Shakshuka with merguez sausage, cherry tomatoes, roasted onions, and parsley. Both are served with side salad, tahini, labneh and a choice of white/multigrain bread or Landwer's Moroccan pita. I found portion to be good enough to fill you but not stuffed. This is one of the few brunch places in Toronto that I've been to several times, and have found it to be consistently great across all locations. My personal favourites are any of the shakshukas (def get the challah bread) but have tried a number of different menu items and have enjoyed all of them. The only items I haven't really tried are sweet, and that's just because of my personal preference towards savoury breakfasts. Drinks are delicious, and I especially love the tea blends. I think that prices are reasonable, service is friendly and non-pretentious and food is well-plated with solid portion sizes. It's busy on weekends but I've never had to wait too long by signing up for the yelp waitlist. Definitely worth a try if you've never been and it will continue to be a staple spot for me! read more
