The sauce was a bit thin, very sugary, had little to no spices, and had almost no heat. I wanted to try a new place this evening so I decided to try Cafe of India in Maynard. They get a 5/5 for spice as many places don't make their food spicy enough and I enjoy the heat. The chicken vindaloo I ordered was level 5 spicy, and had a good balance of both meat and sauce. I wasn't as impressed with the naan or the basmati rice. I ordered garlic naan and it didn't taste very garlicky. It was also dry. The basmati rice was plain and didn't have any additional aromatics such as cardamom added. Coming from the Raleigh area, which has a large Indian population, I was disappointed by the flavoring of the naan and the rice. Overall I'd give Cafe of India a 3/5. read more

I ordered lamb biriyani from cafe of India and i got someone's left over in a box with added white rice on top. It was a mix of someone's left over and i could not touch it. Was blown away by this place. The authentic spots in Boston and on Curry Hill and 6th St in NY have nothing on this place. It was one of the most delicious Indian meals I have ever had. Chicken Tikka Masala, veg samosa, coconut soup all out of this world! Aloo Chole was like a warm hug in a bowl...so good! Finished with a wonderful chai tea. I get take out from this restaurant a couple times a month. It is always a good experience - they always get the order correct, have friendly service, and take care to ask about personal preferences, like "how spicy?" I am vegetarian and appreciate the fact that they have a section of the menu specifically labeled for that. read more

We just moved to Maynard earlier this year. Got take out for the first time and thought the food was very good. We moved from Boston and had lots of chocies for Indian food. This place was as good as any in the Boston area. As well the woman that greeted us was very nice and welcoming. Will go and dine in next time. Highly recommended. read more

The three stars even are a stretch. This place serves watered down versions of Indian food. Chicken tikka masala ordered mild tasted more like kheer with the amount of sugar added to the curry. Chef does not know what the recipe for the koftas is in malai kofta. We got 'gatte' instead of malai kofta in a curry with half cooked onions and a pale yellow color. Chilli paneer was missing any chilis and the sauce was simply watered down ketchup with onions and few green peppers. This was very sub par Indian food. We will not be ordering again. read more

Pros: Nice people who are polite. Much of the food is good tasting. Cons: They are painfully slow and a little pricey for Maynard. Recently, I ordered 3 entrees and an app via phone and was told 20 mins. I arrived 20 mins after ordering. I waited 50+ mins at the restaurant. I only ordered 3 entrees and an app as described on the menu. My order was placed several hours after opening. The above was the 2nd or 3rd such occurrence of this experience. Summary: The food tasted fine and the people are nice, but they did not apologize for the wait and they did not try to make it up in any way. This is not the first time. I asked for mildly spiced and I got my tongue almost burnt off. I can handle moderate spice but asking for mild shouldnt have been this bad. The food is watery and not as fresh as before when it was under a different name. read more

Tonight we ordered takeout - it was our first experience with Cafe of India. We ordered garlic naan, onion kulcha, dal makhni, bhindi masala, shahi navratan korma, shahi paneer korma, mushroom curry, and chicken vindaloo. Chutneys and plenty of basmati rice were packed in and we were surprised to see a complimentary order of kheer stuck inside the bag, too. My in-laws, my husband and I haven't eaten Indian food in a long time and this was a first time for our kids to try it. We loved it - everything was delicious and we all voted to give five stars (except for the seven-year-old, who said four because she is picky and doesn't like to try new foods...). We will definitely order from Cafe India again, though because, when we walked in to pick up our order we instantly enjoyed the ambience and the wonderful smells, we may get a table soon ;). Very decent standard indian food, with good portion sizes. Not much more to add! The staff is super friendly, the waitress who is always there, is so smiley and happy. The manager is also very courteous and welcoming. Eating in is a great experience, it is always really clean and professional in presentation with crisp cloth napkins, pristine white dishes, and I think they had a bit of a rough open, especially considering how long the former indian restaurant was closed before they moved in. Sometimes we're the only customers in the whole place. This is not a sign of poor quality, they're just struggling to find a customer base. I hope they stay! read more

My husband has eaten at many Indian restaurants in the Boston and Cambridge area and he says that Café of India is One of the best Indian restaurants that he has ever experienced. The service is great and the Chicken Tikka Masala is excellent. I love the Lamb Saag and Lychee Martinis!! I have tried their take out in the past and it was absolutely amazing but today it was my first time here for sit down dinner. I don't know how to admire the quality of food they serve. Ordered Shahi Aloo Gobi and was beyond my expectation. Very different from other Indian restaurants in terms of flavor and taste. Gobi and Potatoes are perfectly cooked and folded well in the spices to give great texture and taste. Outstandingly delicious. Chapati without butter was very much home style - similar to my Mom's cooking. Very satisfied and I must go back with bunch of friends to try their other dishes. read more

When I asked for spicy, they delivered! Not many restaurants in burbs do. We lived in the city for a decade. Honestly, this is the first casual restaurant in the area that is on par with what we were eating in the Cambridge/Somerville area. It's awesome- and best of all...they deliver. Last night we went for dinner for the first time. We both love Indian food and have been to several Indian restaurants in the area. Now I'm kicking myself for not having gone here sooner! We had vegetable samosas to start - they were packed with potatoes and pea and came with a delicious green sauce. For dinner we had lamb saag mildly spiced and chicken tikki masala medium spiced. Both came out perfectly spiced and had great flavors. The tikki masala in particular was richly flavored. The service was attentive and friendly. Atmosphere and decor were also very nice.
