    Oat cappuccino

Soothingly muffled even when crowded, thanks to high ceilings and wooden surfaces, this gem of a place is sporting fast service and even faster WiFi at ~75Mbit. Enjoyed my smooth oat cappuccino powder-topped with brown sugar. Lots of light and life inside.

We stopped in here for breakfast, as we were staying at the Premier Inn across the street. The portions were generous and the prices affordable (about 9 pounds per person). I had the English breakfast. I enjoyed the eggs, sausage, and especially the bacon and the portobello mushroom. But I did not like the beans (just tasted bland and meh), the potato hash (too many peppers!), and the bread (too hard to chew through). My husband got the Mediterranean breakfast. He did not enjoy his sausage, which was different than the one I had, nor the hash either. The portion sizes were good and the service was excellent. I guess Cafe Route just isn't our "cup of tea."

    Amazing salads here.

I totally lost my shit at the waiter in this place. Why? Because I'm crazy. But also because they are soooooo slow. It had been a hungover Saturday and we had already had appalling service at a cafe in Stoke Newington. All I wanted was a freaking drink. Despite 6 serving staff milling around the counter looking hip, I just couldn't get a glass of water. We waited for 10 minutes to even get our drinks, despite the aforementioned 6 serving staff ambling about. Our initial waitress looked like she was looking for something to do - how about you walk over to that bar and bring my drink? Is that so hard to do? Apparently there are all sorts of restaurant politics here and only 1 of the 6 can bring anything to the table. So then when the waiter went to another table with our cake, I shrieked 'no' at him. Poor guy. Poor me. I then had to wait longer for the glass of water. FFS. Cafe Route is gorgeous, by the way. The huge food counter is incredibly inviting when you walk in. Giant bowls of beautiful, fresh and healthy salads including peach with mint and feta, aubergine parcels with yoghurt and butternut squash. It's like a Moroccan dreamland and all the dishes are interesting and inventive. This is salad on crack. I want to go back and try everything. But the service, Jesus.

Cafe Route is a great addition to Dalston. Run by a local husband and wife team, their concept is broadly Turkish/Kurdish with a modern British twist. But I don't feel this category does the place justice - it makes it sound like yet another Mediterranean cafe, but Cafe Route is anything but; you can actually sense the passion the owners have for their culinary heritage and their business. Their ingredients are all hand picked and sourced from the best possible suppliers, the salads on their deli counter are freshly prepared on site to owner Melek's own recipes and the chiller and shelves are full of yummy treats and high quality essentials. Finally a place to satisfy odd cravings like coconut milk yoghurt or kefir without having to leave Dalston (and open until 11 every day). Oh, and don't forget really, really nice bread. As a German in London, I have often struggled to find bread I like; now I have it on my doorstep! I don't go anywhere else for bread anymore. Their breakfasts are absolutely amazing. I love the Mediterranean, but the full English is pretty yummy too. To me, a plate of Mediterranean treats, a glass of fresh orange juice and a Monmouth macchiato, are the perfect start to a perfect Sunday. If I could I would start every Sunday there. The lunch menu includes a selection of sandwiches and a soup of the day as well as two tasty burgers, a classic one and one with chorizo, peccadillo peppers and rocket. At dinner time, the cafe turns into a bistro serving grilled meat and fish and a good selection of wines. They also have a good selection of their cakes and tarts - including a Bienenstich, a Geman cake that took me right back to my childhood - and Monmouth coffee to go. I realise I'm starting to sound like a marketing person, but I simply cannot praise this place enough. I absolutely love it!

    3 salads.

My friend and I visited this place for the first time for a pre-theatre munch and catch-up in the last of the evening's fleeting summer sun. Feeling neither rich or starving we settled for their "3 salads for £8" of which we (both) chose: bulgar stuffed Aubergine with an aoili and pomegranate; chargrilled courgette and sweet potato; and a vibrant tabouleh. With a crisp white wine for accompaniment and a later regretted pining for a brownie, this was truly lacking of nothing.

I'll be back for these beauties!

I accompanied some friends who knew the place already and allured me by promising fresh and healthy Mediterranean flavours. I was immediately impressed by the very tasteful interior and the tempting delicacies on display. The breakfasts are modern takes on traditional English breakfast. I liked my veggie version but lusted after the sumpuous salads that were being prepared for lunch and carried from the kitchen to the counter. I'm definitely going again to take advantage of their 3 salads for 8.50£ or maybe better the 4 salads for 9.50£ offer ;) See you there!

Sandwich of the day at Route. Chicken, bacon & avocado on artisan bread. Delicious! Anaemic colouring the fault of my camera :-)

So…read moreyes, it is overpriced and underwhelming, since why try hard for tourists and overworked office personnel? Indoor and outdoor seating available galore. Modern, clean ambiance (best part of our experience here). The menu is typical western menu to please a bland pallet. Everything was bland. And I'm someone who doesn't go crazy with seasoning and spice (very conservative), so if I say the food was bland--it can't get any more devoid of taste and flavor. English breakfast was standard. Nothing to write home about. Same for orange juice. Omega 3 breakfast was lackluster. Everything was devoid of seasoning and flavor. How's that possible? Ingredients were good, but the dish just didn't work. What a shame. The power of salt and a little season cannot be overstated. The green smoothie was like juice--very watery. No pulp--or "smoothie" part. Sweet, so be warned. Mix in some water to dilute it. Staff are sweet and efficient. Only good things to say. Would not return. Spend your money elsewhere.
