These tuna Crudo nachos were hit with everyone and I want to figure out how to make them at home
    Greg L.

We started with a special, the tuna Crudo nachos, which were so good that I'm going to try to figure out the sauce so that I can serve them at home I chose the duck with the Thai fried rice and my wife had the hanger steak. Each was perfectly prepared, and the sides were familiar, but updated creatively. I didn't expect the Thai fried rice to so perfectly complement the duck, but the richness of the duck balanced the dish. The wine menu listed Pez 734 / 2nd Pez, a rich and powerful wine from Saint-Estephe, as a perfect match for duck and beef - the menu was exactly right and we were very happy with our choice. We had never been here before, but came as recommended by our cousin - everything was so good and the menu had a bunch of other options that we wanna come back to try, so we will definitely return when we're back in Connecticut.

Started with Fried calamari tender and crisp. Bulgogi very tasty . Excellent NY Strip steak, juicy and tender. Cooked perfectly! The frites, not really impressed, just your average fries . If I'm being honest they are Exactly like the frozen fries I buy at restaurant depot. I was Expecting a more homemade look/taste. The osso buco special was very flavorful and tender. All in all A delicious meal and excellent service .

My husband and I made reservations for a Thursday night at 5pm before we went to a comedy show. The reviews and the menu looked promising so we figured we would give it a try. Service was pretty good. Not terrible, not fantastic. We had a nice booth in the dining room and the restaurant seemed to fill up quickly within the time we were there. They have quite an impressive wine and mixed drink menu along with an expansive beer list which my husband appreciated. We had mussels for the app. Really great, nice flavor, all cooked properly and presented beautifully. My husband had the duck duet and I had the pan seared chicken. My husband loved his food. He said it was really flavorful and cooked perfectly. I don't care for duck but it did look delicious. The pan seared chicken came with a large homemade ravioli that had mascarpone and black truffle. The ravioli was solid, the chicken left a lot to be desired. It was really underwhelming and needed a lot of seasoning. I was hoping that the sauce they served it with would have been a bit thicker and it left me feeling confused - it was more of a soup consistency with little pieces of carrot and asparagus throughout. Nothing stands out from our meal other than the food being plated exceptionally well. A solid choice for dinner though I'm not sure the price justifies what you get. My husband had 2 beers, we had an app and 2 dinners and paid $135, without tip included. Seems that this is a place the regulars frequent. The extensive drink list and bottled wine menu is for sure their money maker at this restaurant. Probably won't be back as there are other great options in town that give Cafe Routier a run for its money. Out of 10, I'd give it a 6.5.

There was nothing here not a 10! Except maybe the crème brûlée. It was too early in the evening to have it. It has to come to room temp. Dan is the man!! And his instructions to a capable chef made for a memorable meal. Memorable , this was beyond that. You have to come here!! Best (so far) on the shoreline. Enjoy!!

We sat near the hostess station and seemed like there were many repeat visits by locals. Requested a different table in empty restaurant and it caused a bit of a problem as if all other tables seemed to be reserved for certain people. Told only two least popular tables available. Minus one star as a lot of tables still empty when we left.. Large menu of full dinners and many small plate options for those repeaters. Dry January so Virgin Bloody Mary and a tasty orange mocktail to start. Shared app and dessert meant we left stuffed. Food cooked as ordered. Only food critique was more mushrooms than gnocchi in appetizer but as it was shared husband ate all the mushrooms and I the gnocchi. Large portion of duck and hanger steak with tasty sauces. Will think twice about going back even though we are now locals.

This was my first sit down meal at a restaurant since the lockdown. I was pleased that I went here; what a great meal. First of all I felt very safe, everyone social distanced and all utensils we're in little bags. For an appetizer we the Broccoli Rabe, it had white beans, garlic, cherry peppers, roasted tomatoes, olive oil, sausage and Parmigiano with elephant ear pasta. It was so flavorful and it had just enough heat. My main course was Seared Scallops, it was served over sweet potato puree, corn, bacon, and scallion ragout. What a great mix of flavors. For dessert I had a rich chocolate cake with ice cream, it came with candy walnuts and caramel sauce. So rich and full of chocolate flavor. I tasted some French fries that were very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was a little pricey, but well worth the money

First time eating at Cafe Routier did not disappoint! We went here for a date night after a few neighbors had recommended it. We were really happy with all the food we had. We shared a bunch of small plates and apps. We had the fries- made them truffle fries and they were so delicious! The Brussels sprouts were perfectly crispy and had truffle honey on them. Also went for the ahi tuna "nachos"- delicious. We added 1extra because they came in an order of 3. We split the scallop dish for our main and it came out plated nicely on two separate plates. Our waitress was so nice and warm. She explained the menu to us- it's always changing and has different themes. They do keep some favorites- like the fries always on the menu. There were definitely a ton of regulars here and a reservation is highly recommended! Easy to do on open table!

We asked the bartender if we could enjoy the Happy Hour at one of the tables, he said, No. Only at the bar. Something that was not spelled out on the menu nor the website. We sat at the bar. The menu listed the house gin at $5. I asked which Gin did they use as House Gin. The bartender said, I can give you Tanqueray but the price is not $5 like the menu says, it's $7. He said that menu was from Milford, not Westbrook. Weird...so I get a glass of wine, which did ring at $6 like the menu said. We ordered a few "tapas". Out of the four that we tried, the best one was the turnover (empanada), then the meatballs (tiny meatballs), then the fried calamari (which tasted and looked out of a frozen wholesale fried calamari bag) and last the pork medallion (not tasty at all). When the bill came, two of the tapas had the wrong price (higher than what the menu said)....I had to ask the bartender to rectify, which he did.....Poor people the ones that do not check their bills....they can easily be overcharged here....Big time..... Not recommended....not coming back.

I was sooo excited to have lunch at Aspen today. It's been on my to do list for so long. We were…read moreseated promptly on arrival. They seemed understaffed and it was at least 10 minutes before anyone came over. Our server never introduced herself. (Later looking at the receipt, her name was Cate) She simply walked up with no greeting and just said "what are we drinking?" My wine pour was significantly less than my husband's, which was not a good start especially after having waited. We ordered small plates to start and I wish we stopped there. The seared tuna was great and had both an aioli and a spicy soy based sauce. My husband had the Kobe beef pot stickers and they were tasty, with a nice warm veggie medley in the middle of the plate. The pot stickers could have used a bit more sauce though. When it came time to order entrees, I was fully set on the lobster panini. The server advised me not to order that, and raved about the carbonara, so I ordered that instead. Big mistake. Huge! I wish she just let me order my panini. The carbonara was full of dark meat chicken (gross!!) that tasted gamey, and the sauce was broken. It clearly had too much butter and was not an authentic carbonara. I told our server multiple times that I did not like it. I had separated all the chicken in a pile and ate maybe 1/3 of the pasta. She strangely kept offering to make me the short rib pappardelle instead, which I declined, as I had no interest in that dish. I found it so odd that she picked out a specific dish to offer as a substitute. At least if she offered the lobster panini, it would have made sense since that's what I originally wanted to order, if not for her meddling in my order. My husband ordered a burger cooked medium. It was fully well done. The fries were limp and not crispy. Not a good showing. He wrapped his up to take home, but I did not. Clearly not eating 3/4 of the meal and also not taking it home was a sign of my discontent. I wish I took photo of my plate as I left it. I was pretty offended when she did not remove it from the bill. It's fine, we paid it, but that will be the first and last time we dine at Aspen. We paid our bill as charged, took the cost of my meal out of her tip, and called it a day. This is something I do not often do, but I felt warranted on this occasion, due to the poor food quality and her absolute indifference. We will not be back. Two stars only for the yummy small plates and the very very sweet hostess!!

An underwhelming return to Aspen…read more After staying away from Aspen for a while due to a past decline in quality, we decided to give it another try on a Tuesday evening to take advantage of their 15% discount. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations. The Food The meals were a bit disappointing, especially considering the standard menu pricing. My wife requested that her scallops not be undercooked. The server politely noted that overcooking them makes them tough, reassuring us they are always "cooked to perfection" here. However, when the plate arrived, they were quite undercooked and needed to go back to the kitchen. Even after being reheated, they unfortunately remained undercooked. My beef tenderloin tips meal was acceptable but fairly ordinary and didn't quite live up to a premium price. Both entrees featured puréed potatoes and what were listed as "asparagus tips". We had to chuckle when the plates arrived, as the asparagus servings were mostly the stalks and very sparse on the actual tips. The service itself was perfectly fine, though there was a minor hiccup at the end. When the check arrived, the 15% discount hadn't been applied. The server was apologetic, mentioning it was the first night of the promotion, and quickly corrected it for us. Overall Impression Even with the discount, the dinner felt fairly marginal for the cost. The overall atmosphere was a bit uninspiring, and given the disappointment with the food, we likely won't be rushing back anytime soon.

First off, when you find the menu online, there is many items that are not currently on the menu. I know they had some staffing issues recently and I'm sure that's why they are running a limited menu, but that should definitely be updated online so guests know that before they come. I also was really looking forward to trying some of their beer, only to find that the only surfridge product available was a seltzer. This was a huge disappointment. To go to a brewery and not be able to drink their beer is pretty ridiculous. Maybe a social media post on instagram to let people know you're not serving your own beer right now? Would have been pretty helpful. When I asked the bartender if that's all the beers available he said " we're going with a microbrewery approach right now". Not really a microbrewery approach if there's one house made beverage and it's not even a beer. That's just a restaurant at that point. The pizzas were good as always, just really long wait in between. We were sitting with two other friends who ordered separately but still at the same time as us, and in between all the pizzas there were super long wait times. One pizza, than 25 minutes later one for the other check, than a half hour later, the other one for them, and then a good amount of time later the last one for us. We didn't even really want it at that point. The whole flow of the way the food came out was just really weird. I'm a chef of almost 15 years in the industry, I'm in no way giving up on this place, as I really like it here. I just think there's some very questionable decisions on the way it's currently being ran. Thanks.
