We arrived around 4:15 to catch the Happy Hour. When we arrived, we noticed the slight musty smell right at the entryway...not a good impression. We asked the bartender if we could enjoy the Happy Hour at one of the tables, he said, No. Only at the bar. Something that was not spelled out on the menu nor the website. We sat at the bar. The menu listed the house gin at $5. I asked which Gin did they use as House Gin. The bartender said, I can give you Tanqueray but the price is not $5 like the menu says, it's $7. He said that menu was from Milford, not Westbrook. Weird...so I get a glass of wine, which did ring at $6 like the menu said. We ordered a few "tapas". Out of the four that we tried, the best one was the turnover (empanada), then the meatballs (tiny meatballs), then the fried calamari (which tasted and looked out of a frozen wholesale fried calamari bag) and last the pork medallion (not tasty at all). When the bill came, two of the tapas had the wrong price (higher than what the menu said)....I had to ask the bartender to rectify, which he did.....Poor people the ones that do not check their bills....they can easily be overcharged here....Big time..... Came here for lunch with a bunch of friends. The food was delicious and the presentation was excellent. The octopus salad was tender and tasty. The artichoke hearts were delicious just enough olive oil and flavor to mop it up with the hot bread they served the table with. The brussels sprouts were also delicious and a good way to start the meal. I my lunch was their surf and turf, which was amazing. I never had a filet mignon that big at restaurant. It was cooked to perfection and you could almost cut it with a fork. The mushroom orzo was a nice compliment to the steak. Not good... upon entering I noticed the restaurant had a slight moldy smell. Turn off. The waiter took our order and One of the servers came over with a very large bread basket and gave us each 1 piece of bread and walked away with the basket. I'd rather they didn't give us bread because I thought that was Quite cheesy. If you're going to give us bread put a basket on the table with a few pieces. We decided to order a few Tapas for dinner. My wife and I dined at Bistro, which as the name implies is a restaurant and Tapas Bar, a few weeks back. I stuck to the entree portion of the menu rather than tapas. My wife and I split a saucy, bean and veggie topped grilled calamari dish. The calamari was in larger tubier sections than you normally see. It was relatively tender. A pretty good dish. My strip steak was interesting in that it was butterflied, but only apparently grilled on one flattened outside portion, and then folded back over. I ordered it medium rare, but something about the butterflying led to an uneven temperature experience. Parts were medium rare. But parts were rare and parts were more well done than medium. Parts were very good. And other parts were overly chewy. The steak also had a bit of a peppery sauce. The sautéed greens that came as a side were very good. The roasted potatoes were pretty good. The lava cake I ordered for my dessert was surrounded by red sauce drizzles and topped with a sweet white sauce. This was well plated and pretty tasty. Service was attentive. The atmosphere was fine. Nice Linen on the tables & proper glassware helps divert attention from the rustic & dated interior decor. We dined on a generously portioned & very tasty assortment of seafood & vegetable tapas. Pear & gorgonzola cheese salad was beautifully presented & the best part was that it was not overly dressed allowing the impeccably fresh greens & fruit to shine. If you aren't the impatient type, you'll think the Service is fine, but prepare your table as tapas & salad may be delivered at the same time -as ours was. Back to Bistro to celebrate my wife's birthday. We made a reservation Saturday night. Upon arriving, we were seated promptly, even though we arrived early. We were waited upon shortly after being seated. The dining room is spacious, nicely lit, and the seating at tables is comfortable. We decided to go with all tapas to share. We started with a nicely dressed house salad. Then we ordered and shared grilled shrimp a la plancha, empanadas, chorizo, and lamb-beef-pork skewers. All were nicely plated and delicious. We each ordered a Spanish rose which was a perfect accompaniment to the tapas. We celebrated my wife's birthday with a scrumptious order of chocolate lava cake served with a scoop of ice cream. Service was friendly and professional. Sadly, however, the dining room was noticeably not busy. We wondered why- could it have been that people were worried about the upcoming blizzard and just decided to stay home? What a shame. This is a really fine restaurant. If you looked at this place from the outside, you would not be tempted to come in. But when you do give it a chance, you'll find some fantastic food. We've been several times, and never had anything bad! My personal favorite was the bruschetta, and they often have specials that are also fantastic. My husband and I went back after 3 years and unfortunately, had a very different experience than the 1st time. To start, a young man brought us to our table where he then laid down the dirty menus on top of our dishes that we would be eating off of. The family directly behind us had 2 kids with them who had their iPad playing super loud. There were a ton of other open seats they could have placed us. Shortly after, the music came on with the speakers close to us and was very loud. 3/4 of the way through our meal, the music genre completely changed to something weird. The waiter waited a bit and then came back and took our drink order. I gave him the order and then asked him if I could order apps (because we were ready to order for a bit already). He took our order and brought back our drinks. My cosmo wasn't that great. Very bitter and not like most cosmos. Then our apps came out which were the garlic shrimp that we loved in the past, and the brussel sprout salad. The garlic shrimp was nothing like we loved in the past(3 years ago). The sauce was horrible and the shrimp was overcooked. The brussel sprout salad was not very pleasant either. He eventually came over to ask how everything he was, and I told him we were ready to order our entrees. I feel like he just forgot to ever ask us what we wanted to eat, which was really weird. I got the scallop risotto and my husband had the chicken with potatoes and spinach. His meal was pretty decent. Mine was okay, but no way near as good as last time. We got the banana for a dessert and the crispy Carmel was lacking on it. I asked for the check. I had to ask for everything without him asking first, besides our drinks. It's kind of off the beaten path, and there's not much else in the area. However, there is plenty of parking, the food is tasty, if not a little Americanized. The best thing we ate, by far, were the salads. Beyond delicious. The beet salad was my favorite. We had croquettes, octopus, and meatballs. We skipped on the wine, but that's because it was 11:30. There's a decent wine list and they have some cool looking drinks. if you're looking for super authentic Spanish tapas, this is not the place to go. If you're looking for a nice atmosphere, decent food, and a place to just get together and enjoy each other's company first and food second, this is your spot. read more

While the building's exterior is unremarkable the interior is nicely appointed, the waitstaff is fantastic, and the dishes are delightful: delectable and pleasingly presented. My wife had her go-to, salmon, this dish over polenta, and loved it. But honestly, go for the tapas. I had a special: skewers of mahi-mahi, scallops, and shrimp. My husband and I recently ate here for just our 2nd time. The first time was over a year ago and we felt "meh" about it, but every so often (after watching too much YouTube) my husband gets a craving for a really good, authentic paella, and there aren't many places around that even HAVE paella on the menu. So we decided to give this place another chance. This evening we ordered the empanadas and crab cakes as appetizers. To be fair, my husband liked the crabcakes. I thought they had too much breading, and they poured so much sauce over the top that they ended up being very mushy. As for the empanadas, I thought the filling was flavorful, but the dough was too thick and tough. But my husband didn't like anything about them, and thought the filling was lacking in flavor. For our entrees, my husband and I each ordered a different paella. For the most part, my husband enjoyed the flavor of his Valencia paella, but was disappointed that it lacked any socarrat (crispy base), which is the mark of a great, authentic paella. My paella was the more seafood-oriented one, that included lobster. But it also included salmon...and while I love salmon, it's not something I think belongs in a paella. So, I SPECIFICALLY asked how much salmon there was vs shellfish. The waiter assured me that there was just a small amount of salmon. So I ordered it. Well, the whole thing ended up being a HUGE disappointment. MOST of the seafood was salmon and mahi mahi, the calamari had a grey color (we were afraid to eat it), and most disappointingly, there were NO clams. Also, the mussels were so small and overcooked that they were challenging to dig out of the shells. Later, when we brought the lack of clams to our waiter's attention, he said that he forgot to mention that they were out of clams. REALLY?...it didn't occur to you that you might want to clear that with me before going through with the order, given that I specifically raised a concern about this before ordering it? Looking for a few positive things to say: - All of the staff were friendly. - My paella also included bay scallops (which are small scallops) and we anticipated that they'd be overcooked and chewy, but they were actually cooked perfectly. Both paellas also included shrimp, and they were cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely, too. - After making it clear that we very quite disappointed that the paellas were "missing" the clams promised on the menu, and that we weren't interested in taking home the leftovers, the waiter brought us the check and told us he comp'd us each a glass of wine. But those few positives weren't enough. We know good food, and cook very good food at home, so when we go out to eat, we go to places that make things that are out of the norm of what we've got experience making at home. Sadly, the quality simply wasn't there, and I'm sorry to say that we aren't likely to be going back anytime soon. read more

Went here with my family on Labor Day and had my car stolen right in front of us. Restaurant employees did nothing to help us. They wouldn't even call 911. Our server kept asking us to stay to not go yet. When we asked for the check they disappeared. Came back with champagne to toast my mother's birthday. It was incredibly strange. They were keeping us there. A few minutes later 3 men pulled up in a Range Rover got out with ski masks on and stole my car. They hit an employees car but she kept saying it was fine that her car had a dent already. VERY STRANGE!!! No one ever came out to speak with police (we were there for 3 hrs w the cops). Later I was told rumor had it that the restaurant employees are in on high end car theft from their lot. DO NOT GO HERE! Not to mention the food was disgusting and the drinks were worse. Tough one...3.5, rounding down. Cool little spot, but not a lot of games in town. If you're in the area, it is probably a pretty good choice. If you're not, well, it's probably not. The food was pretty good, portions were substantial, but the shared service and overall feel had us confused and feeling like a number. We had a Yelp coupon that saved us some cash. Without it I think I would have been less pleased. You could drop some serious cash here pretty quick. Not on local beers, however. The confused stare when I asked if they had any was odd. The venue was pretty well decorated, qnd despite some glaring deficiencies outside such as the "patio" and parking lot, it seemed well put together and clean. Very busy as well, with average age in the room probably being mid 40's while we were there for a late-ish Friday dinner. Food was pretty good. My homemade pasta dish came with 5 shrimp, a ton of very small scallops and some lobster balls (?) for a pretty reasonable price. Fine for what it was, I guess, but I was hoping for more given the location. Would try something else nex time. The girlfriend's paella was pretty good as well, and big enough for leftovers for her, but not remarkable. Average rating of almost 5? Damn. read more
