You could easily pass by this place without a second thought, but I'd advise against that! The inside is super cute and the staff are very friendly. I had one of the seasonal lattes - hazelnut maple. So creamy and there are little hazelnut pieces in there! Loved the wood and metal decor and all of the exposed parts of the building. The bathroom reminded me of a castle dungeon, in the best way. What a delightful cafe in Mt. Oliver! Their menu is enticing and has plenty of both vegetarian and gluten-free options. My partner had the braised greens with grits and sausage, which she said was a little salty but would have gone well with eggs too. I had the eggs over sweet potatoes, which were also a little saltier than I would have made them yet delicious. I tried the house-made orange soda, a pricey novelty at $5.50 but made fresh for each guest. The space is interesting and the staff lovely, and we would have hung out with coffee and work, but they don't offer wifi, and one of us needed it. A must experience coffee shop! After reading an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about the soon to open Echt Coffee House I knew that my wife and I had to be there for their soft opening before they open to the public on Monday, February 28, 2022. The building that houses Echt is actually the former Mt. Oliver fire house in the 1920's which had fallen into severe disrepair before Jorg Gerlach purchased the 15,000 building to house a metal, wood and glass workshop in 2016 which he named Echt Contracting. As we walked inside the first thing I noticed was the absolutely beautiful stained glass windows! The space was incredible! From the custom handmade metal chandeliers to the handmade metal shelves. This is not your normal run of the mill coffee shop! We than explored the basement of the space to check out the soon to open distillery named Echt Liquor Lab. Once seated Jorg greeted us and handed us a menu. After much deliberation I chose a Macchiato and a Cinnamon Roll and my wife chose the Weekly Special Con Panna. It features espresso and house made whipped cream and is served with Artisanal Cacao Powder, Confectioner's Sugar and dried spice sprinkles. Both drinks are also served with a cup of Mineral Water, a small piece of chocolate and a small, powdered cookie. Let me just that I have never had coffee so flavorful like this before! It was truly an experience! Soon after we finished our coffee a woman sitting next to us ordered some food that smelled like heaven so we knew we had to order some as well. My wife ordered the Chicken and Dumpling Soup and I went with the Grits & Greens and topped it with chopped fried bacon. My dish was amazing and full of flavor! My wife thoroughly enjoyed her soup and commented that it was so good that she would buy it buy the quart! After we finished with our meal we just hung out for a while to just enjoy the space and take in the atmosphere. The word Echt, pronounced esht is the German adjective that means authentic (crafting), substantial (materials), true (surfaces), genuine (approach): sincere and honest which is very fitting because that is exactly the experience that Jorg and his partner James are providing to the community of Mt. I wanted a place where I could study a bit and get something delicious to eat, and ECHT did not disappoint. Owner, James & Chef Tevin & the staff have created a truly singular space with one of the top two breakfasts I have ever had. Really. The coffee is perfect, Chef Tevin's dishes truly are made to order, and you truly feel right at home as soon as you walk in the door. This also is a working metal shop and handmade tiles studio!!! Everything from shelves, light fixtures, doors, hardware is made on site. You are encouraged to wander throughout the building & can watch the artists at work. One of the Best lattes and experiences at a coffee shop I've ever had happened today. @echt_coffeehouse can be found in Mount Oliver in the South Side of PGH. The staff was unbelievable - so friendly and attentive. I got a Carrot Cinnamon Cake latte and was just absolutely floored with how good it was. Literally one of the best lattes I've ever had, and I've had a lot of lattes. I got poached eggs in a glass with toast - so delicious. The scone and pear upside down cake were also amazing. They even made the whipped cream right then and there in front of me. I bought beans, and the wonderful owner told me they were roasted yesterday, and bagged them fresh for me. The space is beautiful, warm, and cozy! They truly do live up to their name...and you can tell everything is homemade with love and care. Even though I'm in the North Hills area, I will absolutely cross bridges and rivers for this shop. My companion and I each had soup: I had the traditional chicken and dumpling and she had the house roasted carrot and fenell. The menu has Vegan, Vegetarian, and Meat-eater options. We continued with the house made savoury crinkle and the braised greens on grits (spicy!). We capped off our meal with two Expresso con Pannas and a grilled pound cake with fruit. Everything was delicious! Service was very attentive. You can see the maker space in the way to the single stall restrooms. All the interior metal work was custom made for the space. I will be returning to this establishment if we ever come back to this part of Pittsburgh. I was very impressed with the presentation, atmosphere and flavors that I experienced. I did notice the waitstaff didn't seem as attentive and didn't check on us many times when we were waiting, but that's okay because the flavors made up for it!! Get anything that has the gravy. Drinks were fine and food was amazing. There seems to only be two kitchen staff, so it takes time to get an order. If you have sensory sensitivity to sounds, this is not the place for you. I am autistic and was so bothered by the noise I had to leave. The owners have a metal shop in the store which is super awesome, but I thought there'd be more of a barrier to the metal work than a curtain. Noise bothers me sometimes from a sensory perspective, but I never have had to leave before. Construction noises don't bother me if I'm expecting it, but if I ever return I will have to bring noise cancelling headphones. read more

The owners husband is a metal worker (in fact his shop is attached next door) and he has beautifully crafted the interior with gorgeous chandeliers, and a stunning staircase. And speaking of beautifully crafting, my ginger orange latte was magnificent. Was that hand crafted ginger syrup I saw? The flavors were subtle so as not to overpower. The owner was sweet and patient with my daughter who 1) is not a morning person, and 2) has a communication disorder. The service was spectacular.
