Cafe Thai is a tiny little restaurant tucked away in a strip mall on Northwestern Highway. Blink and you'll miss it. The interior has an odd feel to it and when you walk in, aside from the people working there and a small statue in the corner, you wouldn't guess it was a Thai place. I don't know why, but it had a bit of a Starbucks vibe to it, minus the coffee. I think it was the music that was playing. I thought the food was pretty decent and the lunch portion you receive along with the overall costs are good. One thing that left me puzzled was the "soup" they give you with your meal. It was basically rice in warm water with some salt and pepper. Surprisingly it wasn't that bad, but I can't see myself eating more than a cup of it. Their Pad Thai had nice flavors and the spice was just right for what I ordered (Medium), but there was a little too much sauce on it. I'd rather have a little too much than too little though. Great little spot for Thai. I've been here a handful of times and it's always been good. Lunch is a busy time here and not much room to sit, so plan to wait or come a little off peak. I've had a few items here, Pad Thai, Pad Sieu, Red Curry Chicken, Drunken Noodles and the Shrimp Apple Salad. Honestly all are good. If I had to say anything negative it would be that the Pad Thai is too saucy for me so I don't order it anymore here. It still tastes really good it's just saucy for some reason. I first came to Cafe Thai when I started my job at an insurance brokerage in Farmington Hills last January. Ever since, I've been a devoted regular, making at least two trips a month to pick up lunch here. For one, this place has THE best spring rolls of any Thai restaurant in the greater Detroit area. No other joint serves a roll this crispy. It's long rather than wide, which allows you to dip it comfortably in the accompanying saucer of sweet & sour sauce, and the veggies inside are packed in tightly, so they won't all fall out of the roll after your first bite. The chicken satay is a bit dry, but the incredible peanut sauce makes up for it. This place has a few downsides, but it's great in ways that overshadow the cons. For example, the Pad Thai dish is occasionally watery, but only because it's served piping hot, every single time. The hotter the dish, the thinner the sauce. If you don't want it to have such thin sauce, just stir it a bit and wait for it to cool. The spice is usually just right. Mild has a little bite, medium has a slow burn, and hot is a bit too much for me (though I'm a little bit of a spice wimp). XXX-Hot (also known as "Suicide") is out of the question for me, though based on how hot the other spice levels are, I'm sure it will appease spicey-food lovers. Other dishes like the Drunken Noodles and Pad Se-ew may be too salty for some patrons, but the wait staff is more than willing to accommodate all taste-related requests, in spite of a neck-breakingly busy lunch shift. I'm sure some patrons might also dislike the small size of the restaurant (roughly the dimensions of a large master bedroom), but others will think it's just the right size for an intimate conversation. It's a little loud, but that's even better, because your conversation will blend into the others and you'll never feel you're being eavesdropped on. I'll continue to be a regular here as long as it's feasible, and I can readily vouch for the consistently high quality of Cafe Thai's food. read more

Yes the food is still spot on. Can't argue with that, not ever. However the service has been slacking as of late. I am now a regular sit down patron and I still get take out when I'm rushing. I'd say I visit at least once a week (it's addictive). There were a couple weeks though I must have skipped my weekly trip because they up and switched waitstaff on me! I don't know what it is about this new staff (mainly a newer server) but maybe it's me. Maybe she's tired of seeing me show up and spend my hard earned money at her establishment. Who knows. All the more reason for me not to eat my food there, all the reason for me to not have to leave a tip. Don't be fooled I will still get my weekly order, but I'll happily skip all the way home and eat it at my own table. I'm not mad at the cooks, they do their job and do it well. I eat here almost weekly at lunch. It's a small place but I have never had to wait long, even at noon. You can't go wrong with food here, I usually get Pad Se'ew which is delicious but everything I've tried has been excellent. This place is hands down the best Thai in metro Detroit. I'll drive thirty minutes when I'm in the mood for Thai rather than going someplace closer to home. It's right down the street from work which is dangerous! They get nuts at lunch so go at 11am or 1pm to miss the crowd. Their seating space is small and snug but the patrons are friendly. I love their Apple salad, spring rolls, and FR3, I get it medium with chicken, no baby corn and add pineapple. AMAZING. The staff is so friendly and considerate, for a while I would call so often for carryout they knew my voice and my order. The vibe was strangely random. The clientele was all men (we were the only females during the entire hour we were there), roughly the same age and dressed from the same store. It's safe to assume they probably crawled out of the same cubicle. When we got there we were the only ones at the restaurant and were immediately seated. The service was phenomenal. Lots of smiles and answering questions for my vegetarian friend. When the food came it was OK. I am from Northern California and the Bay Area is filled with amazing Thai. This was good, but definitely not great. In fact, I am not sure what the fuss is about. Northwestern is BIG. This is the place you'd spend half of your lunch hour waiting to just get seated? When we got down with our lunch we were still hoping to finish our drinks and continue catching up. Yes, it was about 12:10. There were about 10 people (all men) waiting to get seated. I was the one facing the door so I couldn't shake that they must be cursing me under their breath for keeping them away from their cubicles and Thai food. I asked my friend to go chat in the car so that we can empty up some space. It was THAT uncomfortable. Had I read Valerie's review about eating and getting the hell out as soon as we were done I would have chosen a different location for catching up. I wish one of the Thai joints in Livonia was this good. Overall the food here has a vibrancy that is sorely lacking in a lot of Thai places. The flavors have that extra dimension that satisfies the urge to eat interesting food. Also the spice levels here are great. Getting things hot doesn't just mean one note drowning in a pile of crushed red pepper hackery. It's hot for sure but with depth and complexity that make the hot food delicious and not an exercise in masochism. My favorite is the beef with Kaffir lime leaves. This is a dish not on most menus around here. The basil and onion and lime leaves weave together to form a great and satisfying flavor. It's not anything like curry type dishes. It almost has an Italian Mediterranean kind of vibe going on. If you get this hot it is really really hot but that manic cracked out kind of hot that the flavor keeps coming through with the heat more and more with each bite. The curry fried rice is also excellent and a great way to slay your sweet and spicy cravings all in one dish. Spring rolls are very good as well. The only thing I didn't really like so far was the thom kah soup. It was really watery and basically only tasted like coconut. It did have a good subtle taste to it and this taste seems like a conscious choice on their part. But I like my thom kah with a lot more bite than the way they serve it I'm a lot closer to other Thai places but I find my way here more often even though it takes more effort because it's worth it. read more

A big fan of Thai food. Always get the same dish for dine in or take out here for the last few years. I asked for extra sauce today, server said she would make sure it's not dry. When I went to pay my bill, I was charged a $1 for extra sauce! WOW! I've never been charged before either...SMH. I told the cashier that I eat here 3-4 times a week (3 days in a row this week alone) and she said "I know". I asked if it can be taken off since I was not told it was extra. She said "NO, I have to charge you". I replied "This would be my last time here then" she shrugged her shoulders acted she didn't care and took my money. This is my go-to Thai spot. They have the basic Thai dishes, however, with each dish you get to select your degree of spice which is awesome. I typically select medium spice which is quite spicy! I've been eating healthy so my fav dishes have been the Cashew vegetables, vegetable Pad Thai and of course their delectable spring rolls! I also pay an up charge and get brown rice. So, when I'm eating healthy this place definitely feels like a treat. A plus is the staff is courteous and efficient. Café Thai, Best Thai in Detroit I have had..beats Sala Thai in Detroit too. Why do I like it? The heat is heat, but not too much, you can order how hot you want it. But you can still taste the food. No alcohol served. Food is cheap and delicious. Look for coupons. They are around, you can be out of there for a group of four for under $30. And leave happy and full. And spend two hours there talking and chilling, yes it is that kinda place. Small, but it works. You get quality for a good price. Their noodle dishes are insane. Drunken Noodle, and there is a Curry Noodle..with Coconut and shrimp..this a legit place. Those shrimps are good and there is a bounty of them in the dish (not soggy and not one or two in it like most thai places around here). We drive all the way up and will continue to for this place. The veggies were freshly cut but from a day before prob and out cho cho plaa was def from either a few days ago or just reheated in the microwave! And it only took 7 min to get out food! WOW! Such a great place for take-out! The staff is extremely nice, and patient. I love ordering vegetable curry, but I am particular about the kind of curry and what vegetables (I know, I'm difficult!) but whatever changes or additions I make they always comment on how delicious it sounds rather than getting annoyed with my difficult order. That right there goes a long way with me! The food is wonderful and the prices match -- $6.50 for a HEAPING lunch portion. Plus, they always have a 10% discount coupon online. Warning - if you want to try this place as dine-in, be aware that this place is TINY with a capital T. You could maaaaaybe dine with four people max, but you would be better off with just a party of two. Pad Thai: great. Gang gai: not so great. Pad Thai is very well done here. Tastes delicious with just the right amount of flavor and kick. Huge portion as well. I usually order Pad Thai and Panang curry at my favorite Thai restaurants. Decided to go with the Gang Gai because it seemed like a variation of the Panang curry (it's basically red curry + bell peppers and then + mushrooms + bamboo shoots). Anyway, barely got any chicken with the Gang Gai meal and it tasted watered down in flavor compared to the Pad Thai. It lacked that "umph so good" factor. If that makes sense... Still! With some rice to soak up the extra curry juice I can't say that I didn't enjoy it. Oh btw the place itself is very small inside. I only did take out but if you're interested in dining in just be aware that you may be waiting for a table. Surprised to find a good Thai place in this area. The spring rolls were the best I've ever had. Perfect! My son and I split the curry noodles, and it was better than average. I asked for no bean sprouts, and they were in the dish, but mostly on the side. (I have yet to find a Thai restaurant that will actually serve me a dish without bean sprouts.) My husband had the broccoli and peanut sauce with shrimp, and he gives the sauce a solid 5 stars! The atmosphere is more than lacking. Very small, and the seats are from the Spanish Inquisition! Best thing yelp has helped me find by far. the food is incredible, i must warn you after eating here, no other thai place will compare! i've been to places in downtown Detroit, Birmingham, and Ann Arbor, and all they did was make me miss cafe thai. the place is small like some reviews have said because it's take out restaurant that has seating for roughly 20 people for connivence. it's take out prices for top quality food. the tofu is always nice and firm, the spice range is great and all the levels have different flavors rather than just a burning mouth sensation. also they use vegetable oil instead of peanut oil for anyone that can't have it. if you give this place a try, you won't regret it. read more

I changed my rating from a 4 star to a 5 star. Why, because their food is so damn good. My favorite is the Basil Fried Rice w/Chicken. I eat this almost weekly but was dared by my favorite waitress to try something different. Boy O Boy was she right. I've tried several other dishes and everything I've tried has been GREAT. If there is a downside it's when they run out of spring rolls. I just accept the lack of spring rolls as a sign that I don't need the extra calories. I was first introduced by a friend's family. Our group was celebrating someone's birthday and someone chose thai. I was totally glad to add another resturant to my thai food rotation. My sister is also a huge fan of thai food and we often get it when we have our 'sister' dinner dates, so it has to be said that Cafe Thai has become one of many places we can depend on for a tasty meal. At Cafe Thai, the spicyness seems to be just right. I love the rice soup that is offered before a meal and the chicken satay is so tasty. My sister will often get a yummy curry tofu dish, I think last time she got a yellow curry. I often will stick to noodle dishes. The portion size is great, definitely allows me to have some left-over for lunch the next day. The service here is great. The actual resturant is tiny and there isn't much room for many tables. When I came in with that group, it was cramped for us and for other tables. (Minus one star for the cramped dinning room and not always comfortable chairs). Overall, great thai, good service...I would definitely eat here more often if the location was a teeny bit closer to where I lived. read more

FOOD: Got the Pad Pak Curry which consists of cooked vegetable medley (baby corn, broccoli, napa cabbage, water chestnuts, etc) with white rice in a shallow bowl of the red curry. I ordered it with chicken. Sometimes, I just want some good comfort food. Although I've had some more authentic Thai food, Cafe Thai fulfilled my needs for this trip on a cold night. I'm staying at an extended-stay hotel just down the road, and have been craving Thai for a while, so I stopped here for takeout on my way home from a late night at work. I walked in the door about 9:15pm. It's a very small place situated in a strip mall- only about 8 tables for two- but nicely decorated, if you're going to eat there. I didn't see my favorite, Pad Kee Mao, on the menu, so I got the Drunken Noodles I had read good things about. I also ordered a bowl of Tom Kha with chicken. I wanted shrimp chips (again, because of a Yelper) but they said they were out. That's good, since it probably means they're made fresh each day. I only waited about 6 or 7 minutes for my order, even though I hadn't called it in. I printed a 10%-off coupon from their website, so my entree and soup came to just over $10. The soup was good- fresh mushrooms and tomatoes, the right amount of coconut, and a lovely consistency. Next time I would skip the chicken and get vegetables instead; the chicken didn't really add anything to the soup. It was also really, really hot, so I had to wait until my noodles were mostly gone before I could eat it without burning myself. The Drunken Noodles were also pretty tasty. It was a generous portion; I finished it, but was a little past 'comfortably full' when I was done. This place minces the chicken in this dish, which is not something I've seen before, but I really liked it. There was a decent amount of chicken, lots of noodles, and a reasonable number of green pepper strips, all in a translucent savory brown sauce (not like Chinese 'brown sauce'). There was a tad too much sauce for my tastes, but I'm generally a no-sauce-at-all guy, so that's not saying much. I had asked for a "hot" level of spice, but I would consider mine somewhere around "mild+". Next time I'll emphasize that I want it really, really spicy. I may be a white guy eating at a suburban Detroit Thai takeout joint, but I can handle a ton of spice. If you're the same way, be very clear with them. Overall, I'm happy with it. Not the greatest Thai I've had in the USA, but it's pretty darn good for where it is. It also has great prices, unlike most of the other menus I've looked at around here.
