This was my first time visiting Cafe Walnut. As a heads up, the entrance is on the basement level and you have to walk down stairs to get inside. Be careful since the entrance door is in the middle of the stairway so even once you open the door, there are still a few steps you still need to go walk down (safety caution), rather than the floor being flat once you enter through the door. The staff was very friendly and they answered my questions patiently, when I let them know it was my first time as a customer. Based on the worker's recommendation (breakfast sandwich and onigiri recommendation), I ordered the spicy pork and egg breakfast sandwich (no cheese) on a croissant, traditional mochi (filled with red bean and chopped walnuts - labeled with a "W" on the packaging), kimchi onigiri (made with Korean rice with red beans rather than white rice) , and the grapefruit tea with green tea base (hot). The breakfast sandwich was so tasty, even without the cheese! The delicious taste of the sweet and savory spicy pork, fluffy egg, and flaky croissant made me wish I ordered two of them. The walnut inside the red bean mochi gave a nice crunch and texture to the smooth red bean filling. Even though the kimchi onigiri didn't contain any meat, I think the crunch and slightly spicy pickled kimchi gave it enough flavor. Apparently, one of the workers let me know that the kimchi is homemade by their mother and the onigiri is made fresh daily! The hot grapefruit green tea kept me warm as I drank it, since it was pretty cold that day. Even though the entrance area doesn't have much seating, if you go upstairs, there is a lot more seating available. I would come visit again! :) read more

I have heard good things about this place so I think my expectations were high. The service was fairly standard; I ordered bulgogi breakfast sandwich which in my opinion was a bit too sweet. If you are familiar with Trader Joe's frozen bulgogi Cafe Walnut's bulgogi had the similar sweetness as TJ's. I was told by my daughter to order their spicy pork sandwich or their various salads next time. The ordering and the "kitchen"'is in the basement level, and when you go upstairs (1st floor level) there is a fairly spacious dining area. It was a bit damp and musty, all the napkin dispensers had no napkins, and the restroom ran out of paper towels (and it was before 12pm...). I will have to give it another try here though. read more

Cool spot. Great vibes. Upstairs for seating is ample. Location is touristic so be prepared to deal with parking if you are not a local. Service was nice. Folks were very courteous and the brought our bagel sandwiches upstairs to us.Had the spicy pork bagel sandwich and tried the bulgogi bagel sandwich. Both were quite good. Unless I missed it, a condiments bar would be nice. Also provides Pepsi products if you want to pair your savory stuff with a soft drink. Price was good for a touristic area in a historic district. Honestly, I hardly ever leave reviews unless it's a really bad experience. Whoever said this was the best matcha, I'm genuinely curious what the best matcha they've ever had is. Before coming here, I did my research, and their Instagram showed a very promising photo of a vibrant, deep green matcha latte. Instead, I was served a yellow green drink and all I tasted was sugar and milk. What made the experience especially interesting was the false advertising on their Instagram, claiming they use matcha from a Brooklyn shop called Makematsar. My new favorite cafe in the city and my weekend morning routine. This cafe is truly a hidden gem and located directly across the street from Washington Square Park. The coffee and matcha lattes are 100%. I'm very picky with my drinks and they never mess it up. They also sell smoothies, but I haven't tried it yet. For food, I've only tried their bagel sandwiches. The spicy pork bulgogi/egg/cheese, and bulgogi/egg/cheese are both amazing! I wish the bulgogi had a stronger flavor, but overall delicious. Bagels aren't super dense. Well priced, delicious, friendly service and homey vibes! If you eat inside, they will bring the food to you. Upstairs there are a ton of outlets. We came here after we discovered how lame our continental breakfast was at the hotel we stayed at, and also wanted to try some drip coffee elsewhere. If you aren't from the area, the coffee shop is a bit hard to find. It is situated between older buildings and has a short and narrow downstairs entry. We entered in the obvious entry, but they have the obvious entry as their exit? I believe this entry one way and exit another is a remnant from Pandemic days. The inside was a bit bigger than imagined. As mentioned, the entry was a bit off, but when we asked if there was an upstairs, we found the sitting area to be large. The seats are not the most comfy to sit at for a long period if you have a laptop and want to work or study. The staff were very kind and helpful with answering questions we had. They had some sort of pecan dumpling that we tried but didn't like. I'd pass on it next time. The coffee was fresh and decent, but I do want to make a note here about Philadelphia coffee, and that is, it has some dusty French roast style flavor to it. I like my drip coffee full-bodied but with hints of nuts and/or fruit in it. This coffee shop and a couple of others, plus the hotels, all seemed to have that darkly burnt flavor. This coffee experience made me look forward to returning home for great coffee. As I mentioned how we came here for breakfast refuel, we were delighted with the fresh and not greasy sausage, egg, and (gooey) cheese croissant breakfast sandwich we ordered. First time I just had an egg and cheese on a plain bagel with a black cold brew, safe options if you've never been somewhere before. Today I got the bulgogi egg and cheese and... mind blowing. Cafe Walnut is truly a wonderful hidden gem! I stumbled upon this cafe for lunch and enjoyed it very much! It incorporates Korean flavors with American breakfast and lunch sandwiches! For example, it'll use bulgogi or spicy pork instead of a breakfast sausage or lunch meat in a sandwich (which is a better option). They also do bibimbap bowls as well which I'll have to get next time! I ordered a bulgogi breakfast sandwich on a sesame bun and a bulgogi lunch sandwich on a croissant. Both were very good especially for the price! The bulgogi has a subtle bulgogi flavor. When I ordered the breakfast sandwich, the cheese, egg, and bagel masked the flavor of the bulgogi. I wish the bulgogi had a stronger flavor. Regardless, it's still one of the best sandwiches I've had in Philly! I will definitely be back. The cafe has plenty of seating! I was greeted enthusiastically by their sweet staff and they helped explain some of the seasonal drinks and pick out their pastry recommendations. A gloomy day in Philly, I decided to visit Cafe Walnut to crank out some work and enjoy the view of Washington Square. Their upstairs loft is spacious and holds a lot of seating. Ample outlets are available throughout, and the place can get quite busy around mealtimes. I ordered the misugaru latte, which is definitely an acquired taste. A popular, protein-rich meal replacement in Korea, I decided to give the drink a shot, and I was intrigued. It's not something I would necessarily order again, but it was nice to try. It has a grainy, nutty flavor and is incredibly filling. I ordered the 16-oz, and I didn't even finish halfway before the satiety kicked in. A great place to work/study, and I can't believe I didn't check out this place to do so sooner. I might not have noticed this place, as it is on the lower level of the building. A Too Good to Go offer brought me in, and I'm so glad I know it is here. It's the only cafe I've seen that offers misugaru, a grain-based breakfast drink. Since I'd only ever had it from the instant packets that a friend shared with me, I had to give that a try. They've got breakfast sandwiches with bibimbap that I need to go back to try. And the dalgona coffee, too. They use local La Colombe and Caphê coffees and Philly muffins. My partner and I stopped by Cafe Walnut and really enjoyed our little pit stop for a snack here. The interior is way bigger than you would expect on the outside, you order your food and drinks downstairs and then can take it all upstairs to the spacious seating area to enjoy. I really wanted to try their samgak gimbap, so we got one of each of their two remaining flavors (they sell a limited amount a day and when they're sold out, they're sold out for that day) and it was absolutely heaven. The filling (we got tuna and chicken if I remember correctly) was so incredibly good!! Sometimes with samgak gimbap (onigiri) the filling can be a little sparse, but that was definitely not the issue here. Every bite was enjoyable. We also got drinks (I got a smoothie and my partner got a matcha drink) and they really hit the spot. But, it's impossible to actually figure out how to get into this place, and it is so quiet I feel like if I breathe too loud people might look at me weirdly. I've walked by this street so many times, and can't believe i've never run into this beautiful little cafe! there's actually been a change in ownership, and the new owners (a sibling trio) are so kind and inviting. the food: we got two sandwiches, biscotti, and macaroons. the bulgogi sandwich is amazing! the meat is really tender and i love pairing it with the english muffin: it's locally sourced from philly and has an awesome, chewy texture. the breakfast sandwich was solid as well! drinks: oh my gosh guys get the COLD BREW! it's not as strong as other brews, but has just the right, light taste that isn't overbearing. plus the texture is SO smooth! i also had the honey lemon iced tea - wow. the honey is super fragrant and pairs so well with the lemon, not too sweet or too tart. a friend also had dalgona, which can also be served with different flavors - she got the mocha and it was super yum! space: make sure you check out the upstairs space. beautifully and naturally lit with awesome park views. read more
