The only reason I absolutely love this restaurant is becuase the food is AMAZING! My boyfriend and I travel from Sunset Park just to eat here. I get the spinach gnocchi and it is so scrumptous! The gnocchi isn't rock hard, and has amazing flavor and their sauces are amazingggg and so are the mussles provencal. The only negative is the waitstaff is not good at all. I think they must be daughters/friends because they all wear juicy sweatpants, and ate in a group of 4 or 5 of them while my boyfriend and i were waiting and waiting for our check. The bussers, and cooks are more personable and a lot nicer and attentive then that wantresses... For the prices they charge, these ladies should not be waltzing around in sweatpants! read more

considering the slim pickins on montague, this place really isn't half bad. in fact, it's quite good. the only downside (and the reason I don't come here more often) is that I always end up spending more than I had intended to. although, that's partly because I always order wine. if you don't order alcohol, it's pretty reasonable. one word of advice, however: if you're ordering pasta and decide to add anything to it (sausage, mushrooms etc.) know that your 13 dollar pasta can quickly become 20 dollar pasta. the only thing I've ever ordered is pasta. a lot of them are homemade, and aside from the combinations they suggest, there's an endless number of creations that you can come up with yourself. needless to say, it's sort of difficult to drag yourself away from that page of the menu. the menu, by the way, is huge. it covers all of the standard italian fare from a to z. in fact, sensory overload probably accounts for why I always default to pasta. not anything to write home about, but a good choice if you're in need of a dependable italian place nearby. read more

For appetizers we shared the assorted cheese and cold cuts platter, and my entree was the pasta carbonara (I chose linguini as my pasta). The appetizer platter was yummy, with at least 4 different types of cheese (a blue, a brie-like cheese, and 2 others I couldn't identify), with about 5 slices of cold cuts (salami, prosciutto, and something else I can't remember). The pasta carbonara had pancetta and onions, and the sauce was creamy but not too thick. A little more onions and cheese would've been nice. We got several baskets of bread, some of which had melted cheese not sure what kind, and was sooo good dipping into the olive oil! In addition to scrumptious-looking pasta entrees and other main dishes, you can also create your own pasta with your choice of sauce (pesto, marinara, bolognese, etc) and choice of pasta (linguini, rigatoni, penne, etc), with whatever additional toppings you want (spinach, sausage, shrimp, etc)! I am a little shocked by some of these negative reviews but then again they seem to be older so be sure to sort the reviews by most recent as you can see they are all pretty good, which is in line with what I experienced! I stopped in for a late lunch with my boyfriend and the service was prompt and friendly. The owner was also helping the wait staff and greeting guests, which was really nice to see. The waitress helped with recommendations and any questions we had and the menu is pretty extensive so there's a lot to choose from. I ordered the tomato soup (SO GOOD) and the avocado salad (ok, nothing amazing but still good) and my boyfriend got the veal tortellini in a spicy marinara sauce, which was also really good but we decided it was a little too spicy. We then ordered gelato for dessert - just beware that this is not gelato. It is ice cream. Would have been nice if they had authentic gelato if they are going to call it such. One of the...if not...the WORST restaurant in terms of delivery. I've dined in here before and it was so so. I would return. But after placing a delivery order, I have never wanted to scream at someone so badly and will NEVER eat here or order delivery again. After placing a delivery order 45 minutes later (expected) my order came and was wrong. Completely wrong. Wrong sauce - added meat (and I'm a vegetarian). Double checked my order and I placed it correctly. Called the restaurant to which the bartender could not find the manager so was going to put me on the phone with a buss boy (I don't know why) until I said I will till she found a manager. Then I spoke to a manager who didn't understand a word I said. Literally repeated my address five times. Then surprisingly the same delivery boy shows up (over an hour after I've placed my order)....has no idea what orders he currently has in his hands...tries to hand me off someone else's order...doesn't even have my order in one of his bags...then I call the restaurant back...the manager claims someone is on their way...I tell him I'm extremely frustrated (which is takes a lot for me to complain or even leave a review!!!) and I tell him this is ridiculous and I expect a refund or something to be compensated for this...to which he then HANGS UP ON ME!!!! I work in the service bizz too and I expect things to go wrong or take a while...but if you're not nice and don't give respect to your customers...let alone hang up on them!! How are you a manager?!? Still have not received my food......and now I'm afraid to eat it in fear they will spit in it!!!! WORST delivery experience in my life. RIDICULOUS! Terrible food and the manager, maybe owner was horribly rude to me. I guess my first mistake was ordering potato pancakes at an Italian restaurant. They looked more like meatballs than pancakes and were served on top of a salad drenched in dressing with tomatoes that looked like they'd been rejected from Burger King. I ordered a virgin bloody mary, which was basically tomato juice with a lime in it. When I thought that they'd made a mistake on my bill, I asked my server about it. He asked some guy sitting at a nearby table (manager? owner?) and he proceeded to get hostile and argue with me. I never complained, I just asked a question (to my server, not him...and I still think they were wrong to charge me the way they did.) It was extremely inappropriate that he'd start an argument with me. It was very awkward having to sit there next to him while we waited for our check to close. I just don't think people should treat their customers that way. That said, the bread was good. But again, the rest of the food was plain awful. Quality ingredients make good Italian food, that's axiomatic, and at Caffè Buongusto it is certainly the case. I was there tonight for the first time, Marco, the owner, greeted me like a friend and took the order in person. The wait staff is great, they don't rush the clients like many other restaurants and don't harass you several times asking "is everything ok" right when you were chewing your food or busy in an important conversation. They don't take your plate when the other person is still eating...in short, they treat their customers the way they would like to be treated. I had veal with sorrentina sauce, and the dish came with a small side of pasta, al dente and very yummy. The veal came with abundant tomato sauce and mozzarella, covered by slices of eggplants. It was like eating a meaty eggplant parmigiana, something delicious that I am sure I will be dreaming tonight. My friend ordered a grilled sea bass that came with mashed potato and herbs. I didn't have the chance to try it but judging from the way he ate it there's no doubt the fish was good too. I am definitely coming back! read more

Went there friday night with a large group food was ok service is horrible . Heres a tip when u have a large group you may want to keep pitchers of water on the table especially when you refused to give us new glasses. We had a preset menu 3 courses apps, entree and desert. We brought a cake so i guess they thought we didnt get the desert we paid for. Never served it and started a bar tab rather then have the guests pay for there own drinks like we had told them leaving the poor woman who put the party together to pay the extra $$$$. The seating was a nightmare all in itself. Party of our party was on the opposite side of the restaurant by themselves. If you cant accommodate our requests do not take the party. Every time I go there, I am amazed at how good the meal is, from start to finish, as well as the friendly and accommodating service. Service is overbearing, too many people doing too many things and no one person is in charge of one table. Calamari was almost flavorless. Chicken parm's was cheesy, but the sauce tasted like just plain ripe tomatoes without any seasoning and the chicken wasn't even crispy. Everything needed pepper, but it didn't seem to help. Tiramisu was good and fluffly, but almost felt like they didn't use the raw cocoa powder on top, which made it bland too. I would call it Caffe Bland Gusto. read more

I asked her to substitute a sauce without garlic for the standard Marinara that has garlic as the garlic bothers me a little. After listening to her scold me about my sauce preference she agreed to my request. When the bill came she had charged me an extra $5. No, not extra sauce, just substituting one standard sauce for another. If I bought plain pasta I could pick from any one of a dozen sauce choices. But apparently with the meal I picked, no substitutions! I thought it was a very petty and cheap thing to do. But the customer always wins. I cut the tip by $6 to cover it. Not sure I will ever go back. Plenty of other good options nearby. Time to try a few other places. The atmosphere was nice (huge HD screen with the Chelsea v. Liverpool game with a nice crowd watching at the bar). The bread and olive oil were so good that we asked for another basket. Coffee was great... much better than anything else I've had on Montague. I got the focaccia sandwich with prosciutto, arugula, tomato, and mozzarella. It was perfect. My friends got gnocchi (a little too soft, but still good) and an omelette. With three coffees and dishes, the total came to $37 after tax. Do not order from this restaurant. I ordered seeing that they offer a dish I wanted and the delivery time was between 30-40 mins. Long story short, my order was cancelled an hour and 20 minutes later and I'm notified I'm outside their delivery window. Why wasn't I notified when I placed the order if they are having problems with the delivery app? Why can't they deliver when I speak to the manager and he tells me it has to be within 1.5 miles from the restaurant? I live exactly 1.5 miles from the restaurant. Marcos tried to put the blame on grubhub, but it's really that he doesn't want to deliver within his delivery window. I'm never quite satisfied with any of the restaurants on Montague, but Buon Gusto is a safe bet for professional lunches / dinner with parents, etc... I have been going to this restaurant for over ten years and I love it. The staff have always been friendly and the food service is fast. I have never had one problem and the food has always been consistent.
