My two visits to Café Eugène (one time for drinks, one time for dinner) have been rather dissapointing on balance, but let me start with the good stuff:
It´s a very nice place to be and to sit - inside and out. The decor is great. The whole place just has a very modern and youthful charisma about it. Some of the prices (Breakfast, Cocktails, etc) are also very low/competitive for Paris and will surely attract a lot of People going to the Expo accross the street or staying in the nearby hotels. The service was very friendly and seemed very motivated.
And to start with the negatives: While the waiters seemed motivated, they also seemed to be not trained well. Taking an order for drinks on the fly for a table of 3 and then coming back 5 minutes later to take the order again - that´s not how it´s done. Still better than some other tables next to us that got the wrong drinks.
On the topic of drinks - I cannot recommend the cocktails. While on the cheaper side of things, ours also haven´t been good. Sure, you cannot expect much for a low price but one cocktail I had should have contained fruit juice - contained fruit sirup instead. Don´t know if they ran out of juice or if that is the usual way they do it, but it was awful no matter what the reason.
The Food we had for Dinner was very uninspired and bland, but the real Problem with food for me are the portion-sizes and the Price. One may overlook the food being boring and tasteless if one does not leave the place hungry or doesn´t have to pay much. But these three things combined really are a big Problem. You should espcially stay away from the Fish n´Chips wich was the worst of the plates on our tables. Not that I would recommend any of the other plates we had - but the Fish n´chips was especially dissapointing and especially poor value for money.
Café Eugène hasn´t been open that long (Summer 2014) so perhaps they still are in the process of "finding themselves" and perhaps will improve over time. Or perhaps I´ve been there on "bad days". And perhaps they ran out of stuff because they were so buisy during the expo.
But those are a lot of "perhaps". Speaking for Fall 2014, I cannot recommend Café Eugène. As it is, it is all Style and no Substance. read more
