I came here on a Friday night with a friend and we decided to try their seafood boil. My friend opted for the Dungeness crab bag, which came with tasty sides of corn and potatoes. I went for the pick three, choosing shrimp, crawfish, and clams, along with sausage, corn, and potatoes, all doused in spicy garlic butter. The garlic butter flavor was incredible in every bite! I didn't really touch the potatoes, but everything else was absolutely delicious. l snapped a picture after I finished, as I forgot to take it when it got to the table! Now, the service was a bit off. There was a language barrier, and they forgot my friend's extra crab, but they made it right in the end, so it was no big deal. The music was spot on--definitely my kind of vibe with 90s R&B playing. I noticed the walls were filled with names, probably from past customers, which added a nice touch. It's definitely a cute and relaxed spot for a date night or a friendly dinner catch-up. Although Cajun Boiled Seafood has been open for a while, I heard whispers that the food was not the greatest so I instead settled for Boiling Soho which is by far the worst one in all of CT. My friend wanted to come here so we came on a quiet Monday evening. I ordered the mussels & shrimp (they charge you to take the heads off, $1.50) and a side of white rice. Our bags came out way too quick that I questioned the manager as to what was really going on in the kitchen. My food was seasoned pretty well but the portion was minimal. Out of the ones in New Haven, they are by far the best but Chosen 1 in Hartford trumps all of them. It's worth the drive going to the 860 to get the best Cajun seafood. I do find these places slightly problematic by the pandering they do to the Black community with the Hip Hop and R&B music. Cajun Boiled Seafood offers a hip/cool and fun dining environment from their nautical themed decor to the rustic written messages all along their walls left behind by their most satisfied patrons (feel free to ask for a marker and leave a message!). Service here is outstanding. Once you enter, you get a great welcome and smiles that happily invite you in to sit. The staff are amazing people and they really go out of their way to make it a great dining experience. The wait here isn't bad either. I've been here about 4 times now (yup.. i know) and I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes whether its a weekday night or a weekend evening. There is plenty of space for large or small groups. Now for the food! No forks needed. the cajun boil proudly promotes digging in with your hands to get all the great seafood they are dishing out. Boiling Seafood has as lot of seafood options. It seems that they specialize in boils, where you pick a type of seafood, a sauce, and spice level. They also have $1 oysters which is what we came for. +FRIES: Good portion for what you pay for. Nice cajun spice as well. -OYSTERS: The oysters come with cocktail sauce and lemons. The oysters were really bland. If you've had oysters, there's sometimes this briny water that's in the shell, but the "juice" in these oysters taste like water. They were also a little brown; not sure the reason for this. -ROLLED ICE CREAM: This is complimentary if you check in, and it was decent. The texture was a little strange though but maybe that's just me not having rolled ice cream before. I wanted to like this place because I love seafood. Wow! After trying this place out I immediately began texting every seafood lover I know. I want everyone to know about this place! I'm way too excited that Connecticut is finally in this game of doing Cajun style seafood mix. It means something when the food is so hands on that I barely get the chance to snap a photo! (Next time though). Additionally, everything from the service end came out fast! Within 10 min of ordering we got everything we wanted! The clam chowder appetizer was on point, and the oysters were very fresh and a palette cleanser for me when it came to getting the seafood mix. We got combo number one to split, 1/2 lb each of mussels, crawfish, and shrimp. To say we were stuffed after is an understatement! With the seafood boil, we got the mild level and I was surprised that my boyfriend (whom can't usually handle spice) handled it like a champ. (Me on the other hand had a cut lip and suffered a bit...but I kept eating just because it's THAT GOOD). Have to come back again and bring in the family and get a chance to look at the Thai ice cream! Or even draw some in the colorful walls that customers get to interact with. First of all, their sign outside says THE BOILING which sounds like an amazing upcoming horror film. Unfortunately it's not though. It's just seafood. The menu has a number of choices, but not too overwhelming. There are normal fish +sides options, appetizers (chowder, crab cakes, etc) and then boiling bag combinations. My husband and I wanted to share one of the bags (yes, a literal bag) and the waitress suggested we get the medium size which is 3 pounds (factor in a lot of weight for shells and such, so it's not 3 pounds of actual food). The small is 1.5 pounds. The small would have definitely been enough for us, in retrospect. We ordered the medium and chose mussels, shrimp and crawfish (the other option was clams but you pick 3 out of the 4). They give you gloves and a bib - USE THEM! It's very messy and takes a lot of work to open and eat all the food. We got the medium heat spice and went with the traditional cajun spice. The food was great - the spice level and flavor were good, obviously plenty of food. The meat in the mussels was HUGE! Usually you get very small pieces of meat but these were crazy mussels, along with really big shrimp! I'd never had crawfish before - they were good, but so much work my husband gave up. The bag also comes with potatoes, corn, and sausage (I think you could honestly leave those out). They also give you buckets on the table to put your shells and whatnot which is very helpful. The staff was very pleasant, though so many different people came to our table. I prefer having one dedicated waiter/waitress to keep things simple. Also bring a marker with you - you can write all over the walls. This is our favorite seafood boil spot in CT! We have tried quite a few and do not find ourselves happy with the experience, like here. We are regulars at this point and always leave satisfied. We've made it a point to try a lot on the menu and are always satisfied with the Low Country boil. This is probably my favorite seafood place in town so far. They have a great Cajun seasoning, which makes the plain seafood extremely tasty. I also enjoy stopping by for their Thai ice cream rolls after class. Because this location is right next to Gateway college. A nice spot to chill between classes too. Although I didn't like their selection of music. I feel like a Louisiana Cajun restaurant should play some Cajun Blues instead of R&B, in my opinion, it didn't exactly fit in. Having recently just tried another good Cajun seafood place in New Haven (Boiling Soho), I was pleasantly surprised to discover The Boiling Crab & Crawfish as competition is always healthy. That being said, this place does not disappoint. To start off, we got the Fried Soft Shell Crab, the Seafood Gumbo and a half dozen raw oysters. The standout here is the Gumbo - thick, savory sauce envelops the large pieces of seafood and went perfectly with the al dente rice. I wanted to drink the sauce it was that good. Oysters were clearly fresh and the Soft Shell Crab actually came with a choice of fries as well. The real reason people come here though is obviously the Cajun seafood mix. We got the pound of mussels, clams and shrimp (with head-on duh). I would highly recommend the House Blend for sauce and we went with the medium spice level. The sauce is amazing, coats everything very well and is a perfect dip for pretty much everything. Now the reason I deducted a star was due to the fact that some of the shrimp were either non fresh or over cooked-the meat was basically mushy. And as one of the star ingredients, that did seem kind of odd to me. But aside from that, this place is stellar. It also helped that they have a Thai Rolled Ice Cream station that is just as fun to watch as it is to eat. I had the Mango base and it was delicious! The ambiance here is pretty relaxed and clean too. With the very friendly staff adding to the positive atmosphere. I am giving a shout-out to Miki here, who was super friendly with us and an absolute blast to talk to.
