And for a dive bar, they make a few crafty drinks, including a delicious smoked old fashioned and a flavorful mezcal cocktail. The bartender was chatty and aptly dealing with the variety of people coming in for a drink or some food. It was a Monday afternoon and we took a seat at one of the tables in the bar area, they have a limited menu which is perfect for what we were looking for. It was their Monday Funday so the vibes were cards and some cool board games! I got the glizzy of the week which happened to be a Bahn Mi all beef hot dog with all the fixings of a Bahn Mi, cucumber, carrots, fresh jalapeño on a baguette roll, was perfect! My wife got an order of the General Tso's tenders and we split an order of onion rings. You can tell a quality onion ring when the onion doesn't fall out upon first bite, sauces were good too, we got ranch and a smoked ketchup. Stopped in here one our recent visit to New Haven. Very cute name and there is seating outside, inside by the bar, and in the separate room that has a stage for live music. We got the nachos and the yuca fritas. Both SO GOOD! We ended up having to take some home. The fritas come with two sauces, a creamy one and a cilantro-ie one. Loved them! The fries were probably the best part, except they didn't have regular ketchup... they had smoked ketchup which I thought was kind of strange. Vintage+divey New Haven is the perfect want to describe this bar. It has a lot of personality! Beer list is solid - something for everyone. The bar can get crowded, but the bartenders did a good job handling the crowd. This summer, the crowd seems to be locals and graduate students. I think it might be different when the college students are back. Definitely looks set-up for live music, so I look forward to another opportunity to visit. Juke box for fun! Pretty disappointed. We stopped in on a cold Saturday afternoon for lunch with family. We walked in and there was only one other small table of three in the restaurant. We grabbed a table and the waitress/bartender quickly headed over with menus and water. We ordered lunch and beers fairly quickly, received our drinks add appetizers and then waited about 30+ minutes for our food. The appetizer of poppers was good but the tiniest order I have ever seen, there were about six half poppers on the dish, but they were tasty. When our entrees finally arrived the burgers and chicken dishes were sizable, the French drip was very small with very little taste. The French dip special was missing the fries so eventually the fries showed up after we asked our server and she again checked the menu. We really wanted to love this place but it was not reflective of the reviews. read more

There are a lot of local brews on tap and the ipa the bartender suggested was great. Not the high-end chic place I was wanting, but needed a quick bite before a meeting. Why had I never heard of it this place before now? The great drinks, food, and divey-feel make this place the perfect go-to for classic bar fare. I was introduced to this place while on the Elm City Party Bike since this was one of the stops - and I'm super glad it was! The place has a great beer selection, but I was in the mood for a cocktail. The menu only had about 4 options so I wasn't expecting much, but I was super surprised to get this unique and beautiful drink that was also delicious and refreshing! It was called the "Starry Night" and it literally looked exactly that - a pretty purple gin and elderflower drink with edible golden stars. I would definitely come back for it. For food, we got the Buffalo Cauliflower Bites, the Grilled Cheese, and the Nachos. I'm usually skeptical about "healthy" substitutes for bar food so I didn't expect much from the cauliflower, but it was seriously delicious. The crunch these things had was unreal and the flavor was perfect. I would honestly order these over wings. The nachos were also great especially because I love refried beans and beer queso. How long is an appropriate amount of time to wait at the bar, for some kind of an acknowledgment from the people working behind the bar, that you are standing there waiting to place an order? After a decent period of time I asked if we should order at the bar or table, and was told that that the other person was the bartender and that other person takes the orders. It was loud enough for the bartender to hear, but there wasn't even a nod or "I'll be with you in a bit". I have worked in a restaurant with a bar and know it can get busy; it takes just a quick second to acknowledge people to let them know that you'll get to them as soon as you can. Otherwise it gets real awkward standing there, wondering if maybe you aren't welcome there. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and go somewhere else, and unfortunately that's what we ended up doing. Maybe we will try again sometime when it's empty because it looks like it should be a cool place to grab some food and a drink. read more

I live this place. The former Rudy's is still holding it down as the gastro-dive of choice. If I lived closer, I'd definitely get there more often. First off, the ambiance. It's a dive. Slightly dim but brightened by a Pabst sign proudly displayed behind the bar. The bar area is small but comfy. Lately, there is no wait staff, you order at the bar, but I usually go during slow tines and the bartender comes to our table. The music (whether from the digital jukebox or from the bartender) is appropriate New Haven dive material. Pixies, Clash, rockabilly, at a correct volume. I'm not insulted by the typical trendy teeny pop bullshit top 40 boring f-ing people music. The back room has a tiny stage area for bands. Rockabilly, punk, etc. Always an interesting selection of international beers on tap, plenty more in bottles, including hard ciders. I'm not much or a beer person, neither is my girlfriend, but there's always a cider for her to dry, and the only way I can convince her to do some day drinking. The cocktail menu is always changing, something for everyone. Think, at least one craft cocktail for every major booze category. Last time I had an Old Fashioned made with Rye, and Earl Grey simple syrup. Food - upped gastro fare. Burgers, sandwiches, seafood. Plenty of vegan and GF options. Doesn't look like much from the outside but the interior is adorable with a great retro vibe. As my friend and I got there soon after they'd opened, there were more staff than patrons but that was just as well as they all seemed to get along and enjoy their jobs! I had three Hendricks martinis while my friend had three margaritas from their cocktail menu. Suffice to say, it was a good thing it wasn't windy when we left that evening. Best local craft beer selection I've seen in a whileIt happened to be be happy hour so we ordered the half portion of nachos that was $5 for happy hour. It was yummy with queso and refried beans and a few other things, lots of flavor and I felt like it didn't need meat. There's lots of vegan options which we want to try one day (vegan cheesesteak, poboys etc). The bartender was super nice and personable and for the few minutes that the place got crowded she handled it well and was pumping out drinks quickly. There's no table service so you get whatever you want at the bar and take it to a table or whatever to eat. I liked the vibe. The place was decorated for Halloween which was cool. It was really quiet inside though so some music would have helped. Also, the place was a little dirty, like the floors and such and one of the glasses we were served had a big crack on two sides (minus one star for that) otherwise the place would have gotten 4 stars read more

I've been a fan of Three Sheets for years! Excellent food (especially their appetizers), excellent craft beer selection, and they have great events and live music acts. My wife and I were happy to see that they were offering curbside pickup during the COVID-19 pandemic. We ordered two orders of the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich with Pickled Fries on the side. When I arrived at Three Sheets, I was able to get a parking spot right out front. I called them and they brought the food right to my passenger side window. I never had to get out of my car. The food was delicious!! It was our first time trying the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich. The hot sauce was great; hot enough to give the sandwich a kick but not overwhelming. The chicken itself was nice and tender, the slaw was good, and the hot honey was a nice little surprise! We loved the Pickled Fries too! We highly recommend Three Sheets and we look forward to when we can go back and eat in person. read more

If you've lived in New Haven for any substantial amount of time you'll know that this is a bar with all the humble townie charms you might expect of a small city favorite -- greetings by tall cans of cold Narragansett, more often than not ironic Jukebox serenades, and at least a few familiar faces. As delightfully divey an identity as Three Sheets might embrace, there is another, often overlooked and underrated side to this bar worth looking into: its food menu. Chef Kam fully understands the concept of the 'gastropub,' and continuously shares his mastery with those who test his kitchen. Yes, everything is still 'pub fare,' but it's always creative -- think fried pickles, pickled fries, octopus banh mi, muffuletta, and beet reuben sandwiches. Three Sheets also has the unofficial best (and officially most dog-friendly) patio in New Haven, an awesome pool table, giant chalkboard walls in the back covered in subsequent guest artistic creations, and live, local music usually on some nights. Not impressed. We came in because of the yelp reviews, but I regret doing so. We ordered tots, a burger and clam fritters. The tots tasted burnt, and didn't taste good. The fritters were undercooked in the middle (I'm from Rhode Island so I know what a good clam cake taste like, and that wasn't it) We got the check, and it was over $40 for subpar food. I'm upset. Came here for the first time for the Vegan Pop-Up. I won't rate the food because it wasn't their menu, just the beer selection (amazing, +1), ambience (was pretty grimy and tables hadn't been cleaned, so divey enough? +1), and service (they seemed really overwhelmed by the number of people, so maybe they were understaffed). Also regarding the service, there is no table service here, or maybe it was the pop-up, not sure. I never want to walk into a restaurant completely confused as to what to do and what is going on, but that's how I felt that day. Plus screaming over other patrons to order at the bar made me super uncomfortable. We came here for dinner one night based on the good reviews. I had the Muffeleta Sandwhich while my boyfriend had a burger. We also had the poppers and the gnocchi snacks/starters. The gnocchi was the best thing. Looking back, I wish I had just gotten a bunch of snacks. My sandwhich was good, a really good sandwhich but it wasn't anything special and after the first half it started to excite me less and less. Came here on a Tuesday. Great happy hour! Weekdays, from 4-7. Beers are awesome and food during happy hours is really cheap. We ordered nachos and wings, and they were small portioned, but good! But we also stayed for dinner after happy hour, and it wasn't as delicious. Food prep took awhile, and was okay (the bahn mi sandwiches came out 15-20 min before any other order). The fries were delicious, but our impossible burger was okay. Other people loved their burgers, so maybe burgers are the way to go here. Anyways, this is a great hang out. Last night (MLK Monday) a couple of us were up around Howe Street looking to continue our conversation over a drink and it was decided we'd go to Three Sheets. As we walked in our friend casually commented that aside from good drinks they have some super fresh fare which is absolutely awesome. What? I'm a little bit embarrassed to say that I've been living on Howe for three months and I walk by Three Sheets just about every day. Given it's appearance, I figured it was just any old bar. Another lesson to stop judging books by their covers? I think so. We walked inside to find a relaxed atmosphere and I immediately felt good vibes. We started to order drinks and our friend-in-the-know ordered herself a gimlet. They actually know how to make them here, where so many places don't use the real stuff, she commented. I asked our bartender about her favorite cocktail. Tess was super nice and knows how to make a tasty beverage. She didn't have a name for this particular concoction that pulls together citrus vodka, squeezed limes, club soda, ginger beer, and grapefruit juice, but after I ordered, and the other two had a taste, that was the next beverage they ordered too. We talked about some potential name ideas, but hopefully someone will be able to report back on an official name for this beverage that seems to span seasons from summer to winter and back. Who couldn't use a little extra vitamin C with their vodka? Since food was on each of our minds and the clams are apparently as fresh as can be*, we decided to go clams three ways - raw, frittered, and steamed. No clear winners as each of them were a delight and it was nice to sample each of the varieties. The raw clams (littlenecks) come on the half-shell in sets of six with one spicy (tobasco) and one vinegar-based sauces (mignonette) plus a wedge of lemon ($8). Mom's Clam Fritters ($6) came hot and delightful, they seemed to strike a nice balance with a bready-ness meets clam flavor. I passed on the remoulade. And steamed clams are always tasty. The eleven Three Sheets steamed clams came swimming in a savory garlic, shallot, herb, yeungling, and butter sauce that was delightful to dip with toasted whole g baguette when the clams were gone. And that leftover steamed clam juice/sauce? I took it home and have plans to use it to make some risotto. As I was headed to see some friends post, I asked Tess what would be worth taking to go. She suggested the pretzels. They came nice and hot and were served with a side of mustard. Since they're flash fried they did end up feeling a bit heavier. And although tasty and probably the right amount of salt if they were paired with a beer back at the bar, they didn't work as well paired with... hot pot. Oh well, next time. Day 2, they didn't taste as good as Day 1, but weren't a bad snack. Great company always makes for a good time. But the atmosphere here early in the evening was super. The only bummer about this place I found? We just missed happy hour. It's 4-6PM. Also, no menu online, which isn't really a problem. It just meant that today I ended up back to check on the items we ordered (isn't accuracy important? Glad I live in the neighborhood). I wondered, are all the bartenders as friendly as Tess and Laura? Last, but not least, Three Sheets has only one thing to say about themselves on their less than active Twitter page - "a gastrodive." But do they need anything else? I can't imagine a better way to describe this place. Will I be back? Awesome Gastropub! I would rate it four and a half stars. Three sheets offers a great selection of local, craft beer and artisanal food. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I felt everyone was passionate about food and beer. The service was quick. It seemed like there were a lot of regulars as the bartenders were familiar with many of the clients. During my stop, there was a small tap takeover from Evil Genius. It was fun being surrounded by industry professionals in a casual environment. We had the opportunity to try a couple of specials including pesto wontons and non-seafood play on sushi. The wontons were delicious, and I'd recommend then if they're still on the menu. The non-seafood sushi included crispy pork, cucumber, and pickled radish. We also tried the clam fritters which were fried in a corn dog like batter. Dont let the divey-bar decor fool ya; this place has a wide range of delicious apetitizers and burgers. You order your food and drinks all at the bar and sit and wait for the food to be delivered. They tag your table not with a number, instead a kitschy icon like Barbarella or Bob Villa the painter. At the time we came here I was on a specific detox diet so I could only eat a small range of things but the waitress/bartender remembered ( didn't write any of our orders done) how I requested my burger. I got a plain burger on a Gluten Free bun with a side salad without cheese. And yeah, it sounds really boring but it tasted amazing! It came well seasoned and it was big and juicy with flavor. You can really tell the merit of a restaurant's burgers if you just get it bare on a bun like I did. Their fries looked phenomenal; dark russet and hand cut. My friend also was surprised at how good her beef tacos were. I was told their hand cut fries were really good as well.
