We didn't have any particular place in mind for lunch knowing that there are a few great options but wanted to try a place where the locals eat so here we are at Ruby's. This town has a lot of history and Ruby's Cafe has been a big part of that history. Parking is pretty easy in this part of the historic downtown district so it was only a matter of crossing the street to get to the entrance, this small cafe was pretty busy but we were able to seat ourselves without a wait although arriving here a little after noon some of the daily plate lunch specials were already sold out- but we managed after our friendly server let us know what was still available. We ordered the pork tasso and sausage with rice and gravy with candied yams and sweet slaw and chicken fried steak with a spicy brown gravy on the side with corn and again an order of candied yams. The food here was amazing, a little like eating at momma's place, this is legit cajun fare and if you haven't had a chance to sample this unique cuisine this would be a great place to start in my opinion. I got a seafood platter and paid $25 +tax. The stuffed crab and hush puppies were badly burnt, but cold on the inside. How? The fish and fries were soggy and had no crispyness to them. The shrimp, like the fish, tasted like the oil it was fried in was very old. The oysters had half the batter fall off before they made it to the plate and, again, was cold on the inside. Oysters have to be fried just right to be good. These were edible. Honestly, I feel like I've been robbed. I see why when I got there, there wasn't a single person eating there. Not one person. They have all of these great reviews, but the food's horrible and no one eats there. I'm guessing they have their friends and families leave positive reviews. That's the only thing that makes sense.
