Took a day trip to Ville Platte, LA. Stop here for lunch. Not many customers and not sure why as the food was good. If you are around Main Street look on the corner for this restaurant. We drove by it the first time and had to u-turn and come back to it. Just be aware a tad pricey for what you get. $18 for catfish and shrimp with brussel sprouts and no salad to start.

    Very nicely appointed interior

My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch after coming to Ville Platte for some smoked sausage. The building is a beautifully restored bank building. Both the interior appointments and the exterior have been cleaned up and nicely restored to showcase the original structure and fixturing. I ordered the chicken and andouille gumbo with a house salad, and my boyfriend had the fried catfish and shrimp entree. Both meals were delivered quickly and were of excellent quality with just the right amount of seasoning you would expect from a south Louisiana restaurant. We will definitely return and would recommend this restaurant to any visitors in the area.

    Stuffed mushrooms. Yum

Is the a good place for cajun food and fried fish?

The food is amazing. They have Cajun food and fried fish. I always get the stuffed chicken with Gouda grits. And the chicken and stuffed with sausage and other spices. Amazing flavor.

The pork chop was cooked perfectly. It was juicy, incredibly tender, and honestly tender enough to cut with a fork. It had a great char from the grill that added so much flavor, and the pickled peppers on top cut through the richness of the pork perfectly. The dirty rice underneath reminded me of my mom's rice dressing and soaked up all the juices from the chop. It was one of the best pork chop dishes I've had. My wife ordered the smoke fried chicken, and it was also excellent. The crust was crispy while the chicken stayed juicy and flavorful. The sweet potato biscuits were light and delicious, and the pepper honey tied everything together nicely. For my taste, it leaned just a little on the sweet side, but it was still a very enjoyable dish. My daughter ordered the Social Cheeseburger with just meat and cheese. She loved it, and I was impressed too. Even with such a simple order, the burger was juicy, well seasoned, and served on a fantastic bun. She and my wife both could not stop talking about the hand cut fries. They were crispy, perfectly seasoned, and some of the best fries we've had in a while. From the food to the service, everything exceeded our expectations. We left very impressed and will definitely make a point to stop here whenever we are in the Lafayette area.

More specifically their flatbreads and loaded fries, which I do not currently see on their website. Most of the time they have loaded fries which in the past have consisted of gravies and sauces. One preparation we ordered came with pickled okra. The fried green tomatoes are also very good, especially to start with or share. As far as main dishes go we have tried the following: All Hail Caesar (Flatbread) Spicy Chicken Sandwich Smoke Fried Chicken-N-Biscuits Social Cheeseburger The Mac n Cheese is a must get as a side in my opinion. One of the first times we visited they had carrot cake as a dessert, we still talk about that carrot cake today. If you are a sweet tea lover this place has a twist which I love. Their sweet contains brown sugar and mint, get it, try it, it's delicious.

We got here not too far after opening. There was a short line and it moved quick. I ordered my items and sat down to hear my name. When I opened the plates I knew I was in the right place. The fish is fried perfectly. The chicken as well though I could have used a little more seasoning. Sides were good. But that turkey wing. My hubs took one bite. Looked at me and smiled. I knew it was on. I don't even really like turkey but I would eat three of those happily for thanksgiving. If you see the turkey wing get it! Can't wait for my next trip back.

They only had a few meats left when we got there and one of them was the stuffed turkey wings, which was highly recommended. It was cool, but nothing like I expected. I thought it would be packed with flavor, but I needed that Louisiana red rooster hot sauce for the extra flavor which I thought would have been marinated in the meat. The star of the show was that okra seafood stew. That was a 10 out of 10 for me! We got the cabbage, but I have never in my life had sweet sugary cabbage. That threw me totally off! My brother loved it and it's definitely an acquired taste. Not for me at all. We had about three hours till closing, and there was a small line so the place does great business and people love it. If I were ever back in Lafayette, I would definitely come back to try something different.

We didn't have any particular place in mind for lunch knowing that there are a few great options but wanted to try a place where the locals eat so here we are at Ruby's. This town has a lot of history and Ruby's Cafe has been a big part of that history. Parking is pretty easy in this part of the historic downtown district so it was only a matter of crossing the street to get to the entrance, this small cafe was pretty busy but we were able to seat ourselves without a wait although arriving here a little after noon some of the daily plate lunch specials were already sold out- but we managed after our friendly server let us know what was still available. We ordered the pork tasso and sausage with rice and gravy with candied yams and sweet slaw and chicken fried steak with a spicy brown gravy on the side with corn and again an order of candied yams. The food here was amazing, a little like eating at momma's place, this is legit cajun fare and if you haven't had a chance to sample this unique cuisine this would be a great place to start in my opinion. The sweet tea is freshly brewed and the service is outstanding and definitely a place I'll return to when in the area or within a reasonable driving distance - this place is definitely one to bookmark...

We tried a few different bites, and everything was exactly what you want from a spot like this -- flavorful, fresh, and satisfying every single time. Food: The food is really the main attraction here. Nothing overly fancy or trying too hard, just consistently good food that delivers every time. Everything we tried was solid, and it's the kind of place where you already know you're leaving happy before you even order. Service: Service was smooth with no issues at all. The staff kept things moving, and the experience was easy from start to finish. Ambiance: Billy's has that classic Louisiana stop-through feel to it. Nothing extravagant, but it doesn't need to be. We were in Baton Rouge helping our grandson move into his dorm as an incoming freshman at LSU, and Parrain's kept coming up in our searches and reviews. We decided to give it a try, and I'm SO glad we did! We visited on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30 p.m., and when I tell you EVERYBODY and their family was there... I mean everybody! The parking lot was packed. There is plenty of parking, but there were so many people that we still had to hunt for a spot. Thankfully, we found one under a shade tree because it was HOT! When we walked up, we fully expected a long wait. There is plenty of outdoor seating for people waiting, and I also noticed they have both steps and an accessibility ramp leading to the entrance. My daughter and I sat down while my husband stood in line to put our name on the list. About five minutes later, he was waving for us to come inside! Apparently, many of the people waiting were large groups and families coming from church, but since there were only three of us, they were able to seat us almost immediately. HUGE plus! Once inside, it was BUSY, BUSY, BUSY. It took our server a little while to initially get to us, but considering how packed the restaurant was, it really wasn't bad at all. Our waitress was very nice, and I was actually impressed with how quickly our food came out. Now let's talk about the FOOD!! We first ordered the onion rings for an appetizer... super delicious I ordered the fried shrimp platter, and those shrimp were fried to PERFECTION! Crispy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The meal also came with salad, fries, hush puppies, and a side. The hush puppies were SO GOOD! They are shaped almost like little donut holes... crispy on the outside and soft and savory on the inside. Delicious! For my side, I chose the fresh green beans instead of the dirty rice. Unfortunately, those were the one thing I didn't enjoy. They didn't have much flavor to me and seemed a little undercooked. Next time, I'll definitely choose another side. My husband ordered the fried catfish platter with dirty rice, coleslaw, and fries, and he loved everything. I tasted his coleslaw, and OH MY GOODNESS! Get the coleslaw! It was different from any coleslaw I've had before. It has whole peanuts in it, which sounds unusual, but somehow it WORKS! The peanuts add this wonderful crunch and flavor. It was SO good. And the French fries!! I've never seen fries cut this way before. They're almost shaped like little Scoop Fritos, with a crispy outside and soft potato inside. So unique and really good! My daughter ordered the catfish strips and fries from the kids' menu. These weren't processed little nuggets... they were actual pieces of catfish cut into strips, and she really enjoyed them. She also ordered the crab fingers, and those were another 10/10! They were incredibly well-seasoned with a little spice and tons of flavor. I tasted one and wanted MORE! I'm watching my sodium intake, so I behaved myself, but they were absolutely delicious. Overall, Parrain's was a 10/10 for us. The only thing I wouldn't personally order again would be the green beans. Everything else, from the shrimp and catfish to those amazing hush puppies, unique fries, crab fingers, and especially that coleslaw, was DELICIOUS. Yes, it was crowded and lively, but we still received really good service and didn't have to wait nearly as long as we expected. With our grandson now attending LSU, we'll be making plenty of trips back to Baton Rouge, and Parrain's has officially made our list of places we will be visiting again!

She came across as short, unfriendly, and overall not very pleasant. I first ordered a Banana Foster's Martini, but she came back and said they didn't have the ingredients. No problem--I asked for an Espresso Martini instead. A few minutes later, after bringing everyone else's drinks, she returned and simply said they couldn't make that either and asked if I wanted something else. At that point, I just declined. When it was time to order, our table had nine people. She took my husband's order, then went around the table taking everyone else's order. By the time she got back to me, she said, "Okay, is that it?" I had to remind her that she hadn't taken my order yet. I ordered the crab and corn bisque, a salad, and the stuffed catfish with creamed spinach. The salad came out quickly and was very good. Then everyone else at the table received their meals while I only received my bisque. After waiting, I was told my stuffed catfish "didn't come out right" and had to be remade. At that point, I honestly wondered if it was a joke. It wasn't. By the time my entrée arrived, everyone else was nearly finished eating. To the restaurant's credit, they did remove the stuffed catfish from my bill, and I appreciated that. However, the entire experience left me feeling overlooked from start to finish. My biggest suggestion would be for our waitress to work on her customer service. A smile goes a long way. Saying things like "Give me that plate," slamming cups onto the table, and appearing annoyed throughout the meal doesn't create a welcoming dining experience. Hospitality is just as important as the food, and I hope this feedback is taken constructively.

The corn meal dressing was very generous, and moist. It had a generous serving of carrots&peas, not so generous with the squash. We did get a slice of Bumbleberry pie, and peach pie. I was really looking forward to the Bumbleberry pie, as it was supposed to have raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries. I hope that's correct. I was picturing a slice of thick pie just brimming over with fat, juicy berries. Instead I got a thin, flat piece of pie with the bottom 3/4 of the pie filled with a pinkish-red opaque jelly of sorts, and a sparse, then layer of mashed berries on top, just plunder the crust. The body of the pie was just under an inch thick, maybe 3/4" thick. It was an EXTREME disappointment, considering how the town is supposed to be the ""Pie Capital of Louisiana". If I were you, don't bother getting the Bumbleberry pie, but do get the peach; it was outstanding! I wish I had the recipe! The flavor of the peaches came through, it was sweet and delicious, without being heavily sweetened with spices, overwhelming the peaches. Yummy!
