We learned a great deal about the history of New Orleans in general, and the French Quarter in specific. It started in Jackson Square and ended near Congo Park. From the strategic blunders of the British in the War of 1812, to the two oldest buildings in the area (one a convent, the other Pirate Jean Lafitte's blacksmith shop), through the heart of this year's Decadence Festival, it was an amazing learning experience.

It's unfortunate that movies and media have given Voodoo such a negative image, because it's a genuine religion that deserves respect, just like any other. I was about to call to try to figure it out but as I opened my phone Caroline called me, and her tone was incredibly condescending. The directions she gave me were also very vague, and the entire conversation made me feel like I was being treated as though I was incompetent rather than someone genuinely trying to find the tour. She eventually said, "I'll come get you," which I actually thought was very kind and appreciated that she was willing to help. Unfortunately, when she came to find me, her demeanor was completely different. She was visibly irritated, stomping toward me and yelling from a distance, "Are you Fallyn?" When I said yes, she yelled, "In here!" and walked into a building. She was far enough away that I still had to figure out which building she had gone into. When I finally got inside, she was still visibly annoyed and huffing and puffing. I apologized and said I was sorry it had been so difficult getting there, while her coworkers were immediately reassuring me that it was okay and that they were just glad I had made it. Their reaction honestly made the situation even more uncomfortable because it seemed clear that her behavior was not necessary. I completely understand that being late can be frustrating, but the reason I was late was construction that had not been disclosed in the meeting instructions. I was already stressed and trying my best to find the group. There was no reason to speak to me so condescendingly or make me feel like such an inconvenience. Unfortunately, the interaction left a very negative impression before the tour even began. I attended Unique NOLA's French Quarter walking tour on Thursday morning, and unfortunately, my…read moreexperience was so uncomfortable that I ended up leaving the tour early. For context, I was the only Black person in our group. Our first stop was an area where the guide, Dane, discussed the history of slavery in New Orleans, including where enslaved people were held and the streets they were marched down to be sold and traded. During his explanation, Dane began discussing Louisiana's racial hierarchy and how people who were partially Black could sometimes own property and attain certain positions in society. Rather than simply explaining this historical context, he decided to single me out in front of the entire group. He pointed directly at me and said, "I'm going to use you as an example." I responded, "Are you really?" He replied, "Yes, really." Despite my very obvious discomfort, he proceeded to explain that if he and I were cousins, he would be able to rise through the ranks of society because he was white-passing, while I would never be able to reach the top of society because of my dark skin. Again, I was the ONLY Black person in the group. There were countless ways to explain the historical realities of colorism and racial discrimination without pointing out the only Black person present and making her skin color the subject of a public demonstration. What made the situation even more frustrating was that I had already questioned his decision to use me as an example. My response should have been a clear indication that I was uncomfortable, yet he continued anyway. I came to learn about the history and culture of New Orleans, not to be singled out and used as a living example of racial discrimination in front of a group. Discussing slavery and racial inequality is an important part of understanding the city's history, but doing so requires sensitivity, awareness, and respect for the people participating in the tour. I ultimately decided to leave rather than continue participating in an experience that had made me feel so uncomfortable. I hope Unique NOLA takes this feedback seriously and provides its guides with additional training on how to discuss sensitive historical subjects without unnecessarily singling out guests. No one should have to experience this while simply trying to enjoy a walking tour.

The first time I booked with JWT was in January 2019 on the Vampire VIP Tour. With every step of the uneven NOLa sidewalks JW weaved tales that kept our group enthralled and on our toes. The stories were a rich tapestry of horror and fact. The second time was in March 2026 and we booked the Dark History Tour. Our guide was entertaining and made time to answer questions with each landmark we reached; discussing details of the building edifices that enriched the story and provided the backdrop of the City's compelling legacy.

I felt uncomfortable during YOUR tour in response to the way YOU (the guide) treated me. I've never had a problem with any other tour guide in NOLA...or any other city. Maybe check yourself and your arrogance and use it to become a fantastic tour guide, because without the deliberate attempt to make someone else look smaller by putting them down, the tour would have been just that...fantastic. You have extensive knowledge and tell a great story...just treat others with respect, that's all.
