AWFUL company with horrible customer service! They messed up a gluten free cake for my wedding and refused to refund and make up for their mistake. My whole family and I have celiac disease and ruined the whole wedding! DO NOT COME HERE. I had to run to cheese cake factory in the middle of the wedding to find a gluten free cake. THEY ARE REFUSING TO REFUND ME THE FULL AMOUNT, because the contract didn't specify it had to be gluten free but all our email correspondence says "gluten free". I over looked the contract because I thought they would of added it in, since our whole conservation was all about me being gluten free. Yesterday, December 7th, 2017, was not only the celebration of Pearl Harbor, but also my mom's birthday! BACKGROUND: I first learned about Cake Works a little over a year ago when they had a little kiosk on the 2nd level of the NEX. I have enjoyed the many succulent diversity of flavors of the macaroons, with the Reese being my favorite, and also ordered one custom cake previously from this phenomenal bakery! On the morning of my mom's birthday, I rushed over to the bakery to see of O could possibly get a last min birthday cake for her. Usually, when you go to a store a pick a cake on the day of, it's average, simole display, and just something to slap "HBD" on... the task is accomplished, but you're left with the unsatisfying feeling of "I could've done better"... BUT! THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH CAKE WORKS! Which is why I LOVE, ADORE, AND TRUST this bakery for all my celebration needs, whether I'm ordering something custom or grabbing something on the way to my destination. I browsed the pastries and cakes originally wanting a cake and a fee macaroons, but their displays and craftsmanship are out of this world! I bought an 8" extravagance, which definately lives up to its name! It's a flourless chocolate cake covered in chocolate Grenache, and splattered with gold! I CALL THAT EXTRAVANCE! So I choose that cake to have "HBD" mom written on it, as well as ordered a 6" caramel cake just for the candles! And if that wasn't enough (it was only for a dinner for the two of us at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Waikiki), I bought an assortment of a dozen mini cupcakes to complete the chocolate and gold theme... Our daughter had her wedding at Sunset Ranch in the late afternoon. The weather was beautiful. The wedding cake was stunning and was a focal point situated next to the sweetheart table with the background being picturesque. However the sun was out and there was only a light breeze. The cake cutting was hours away. Whatever Cake Works did to ensure the buttercream cake would not get destroyed was unbelievable. Might sound weird but I don't come here for cakes. I come here for the delicious macarons. They're THE BEST I EVER HAD! Better than la tour, Whole Foods, & anywhere else I've tried. You can tell they use the best ingredients. The macaron shells aren't hollow like la tours can sometimes be. I came here to get a quote for a cake with a custom decoration. The lady I spoke to gave me a list with the prices. I showed images of the things I wanted on the cake and the she did an estimate. She wrote the estimate down on paper and then I left because I had to make sure the person who was paying for this cake was willing to pay that amount (triple digits). It was a birthday cake and I was pretty sure the price I got was reasonable. I got the "okay" and I went back a few days later to place the order. The lady I spoke to the first time wasn't working that day so I spoke to whoever was working that shift. I told her I came before and I was quoted this amount for the following items to be decorated on the cake. The lady ends up giving me a new quote and the price was DOUBLED! I tried to explain to her that I was quoted the other price but she insisted that I had to pay this new amount. The lady told me that quote was way too low. I was angry and I didn't want to argue so I ended up taking my business somewhere else. I know this place is known for their cakes but they need to get their stuff together. You can't be giving a customer 2 completely different quotes for the same cake. That's just really screwed up! Cakeworks specializes in desserts and hits some out of the park: chocolate decadence cake with salted caramel frosting and delicious macarons, but others are a miss. I have been using this company for three years now for everything from cupcakes (can be dry, or delicious), cookies, to birthday cakes (mine and my dad's), and my wedding cake. I recently had a bad experience with my dad's birthday cake (see paragraph below) but Abi the owner reached out to me to try and set things right. I appreciated that, it shows she really cares about her company and loyal customers. That said, I will leave the pictures and paragraph up so you can be sure not to use that design of cake or risk the not so great results. I will continue to go to Cakeworks for macarons and that salted caramel frosting. Re Oct 17th order: Unfortunately I have to write a review for my dad's birthday cake. I spent $136 on the cake (not including the cost of the maile I myself bought and provided ). When I picked up the cake the music that was attached to fondant was bubbly all Around (not smooth like the Sample design I had looked at) also the fondant had a nick/Crack in the very front top of the cake that was obvious. I purchased 2 livingsocial vouchers last year; I used one around Easter and I used the second one last week since it was expiring. I ordered a bunch of stuff to make up the value of my voucher and here is what I got: 2 slices of strawberry and creme cake, a slice of devils food cake, a small fancy lemon fruit cake, a red velvet cupcake and brownies. The devil's food cake was two days too old, I took two bites and had to toss it because it was just that dry and bad. The fancy lemon cake was a day too old, the fruit on top of the cake looked fresh and plump. After slicing it, I noticed that all the fruit in the middle was discolored and soggy (old) and the actual cake was soggy with the lemon flavoring, there was also a puddle of water on the bottom of the box. It was a huge disappointment, I tried to eat some but I basically ate all the good fruit on top of the cake. I'm just so glad I didn't bring this cake to a party or something because it would have looked bad upon me. The strawberry shortcake cake was maybe half a day old. There weren't enough strawberries in between the layers and the strawberries on top of the cake were dried up and looked gross. The icing had no flavor as well. The brownies had 2 layers of white chocolate and milk chocolate fudge or something. The fudge stuff was too sweet, I think it's to counter balance the bitter dark chocolate mushy brownie. The best part of a brownie is the crispy outsides and the chewy/lil mushy center. This shouldn't have been called a brownie because it was just 3 layers of a chocolate mess. I absolutely love anything that has to do with red velvet and Cake Works red velvet cupcake was like everything else from there, a big disappointment. I took one bite and had to spit it out; the icing had no cream cheese flavor and the cupcake itself had this vinegary taste and smell - it was so gross! What a waste of my money! I'm going to think twice about buying those groupon and livingsocial vouchers for food places unless I've been there before because trying out new things in Hawai'i is a hard task and a risky adventure. A friend got me a small container of cupcakes from Cake Works. It provided me with the perfect opportunity to sample some of these flavors; I had heard about Cake Works and was interested in checking them out. I still haven't been to the actual storefront yet, but based on the sampling of cupcakes that I tried, I think I'd be more prone to ordering the macarons next time. Don't get me wrong; the cupcakes are cute and the mini sizes are perfect for sampling or for a small indulgence. It's just that, after living in So Cal for three years and enjoying Sprinkles Cupcakes on a regular basis, I think my standards are pretty high when it comes to cupcakes (moistness, flavor, frosting, etc.). However, I still want to visit the Cake Works store for myself so I can taste those macarons. Here's my take on the cupcake flavors that I got: "Red Velvet": This red velvet cake came topped with white chocolate cream cheese frosting. Upon eating it, I didn't even realize that this was a cream cheese ... I thought it was a buttercream frosting. I'm pretty picky with my red velvet and only like it with cream cheese (not buttercream) frosting. While the cake was pretty good, I found it to be slightly dry and I wasn't the hugest fan of the white chocolate cream cheese. I think regular, plain cream cheese would have sufficed for this southern classic. "Carrot Cake": This little cupcake also came topped with white chocolate cream cheese frosting, and I gave it to my auntie to try because she loves carrot cake. Though she really adores the carrot cake from Sprinkles Cupcakes because it comes filled with shredded carrots, she did still enjoy this bite-sized morsel. I think she prefers cream cheese frosting when it comes to carrot cake, but she said this version was still tasty and she was glad she tried it. "Strawberry Guava": My cousin really likes strawberry, so I gave her this bubblegum pink-hued cupcake to try. I thought it was featured a regular strawberry flavor but it turned out to be strawberry guava. My cousin ended up really liking this flavor, saying it was really refreshing and the cake was moist. She especially enjoyed the guava filling. "Chocolate": Although I didn't see this cupcake as any of the options on the online menu, I'm pretty sure one of the flavors I got was chocolate with chocolate buttercream. This ended up being my favorite of the ones included in my little sampler. The chocolate cake was moist but slightly dense, and I actually really liked the sweet chocolate buttercream. Ideal choice for any chocoholic. "Lemon-Lilikoi": Since I don't really like lemon flavors, I gave this cupcake to my mom to try. She said that it definitely had that refreshing taste from the lemon--complete with the zing--but she said there was also a sweet balance from the lilikoi. She said the cake was a little too dry for her liking, but she was glad she got to try it. "Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch in Chocolate Cup": This sounds like a dessert that's right up my alley because I love the sweet flavor of hazelnut and this treat seems to be a spin off of Reese's, my favorite candy. Definitely can't wait to try the contrasting textures featured in this dessert one day. "Chocolate, Macadamia and Hawaiian Sea Salt Caramel Mini Tart": I've recently been obsessed with anything containing a chocolate-sea salt combo, and this tart sounds like it's worth trying. I often love the sweetness from the chocolate mixed in with the slightly salty taste from the caramel/sea salt, so I'm curious to try this dessert one day. read more

"German chocolate cake? German chocolate cake? Where the bleep do I find German chocolate cake for this bleeping party? Ack!" This was the recurring scream in my head as I called everyone I could think of to ask about ordering a cake. And no one had it, although they did try to tell me about what they had that was "like it". No, chantilly cake is not German chocolate cake (although crazy ono and my favorite). No, dobash cake is not German chocolate cake (although also crazy ono and a little bit like crack). And the scream in my head was getting louder and louder... Until I called Cake Works. After calling about 20 bakery/pastry/baked goods shops, the person on the phone said "yes, we do that" and could have it THAT DAY by noon or so (I called about 9:45a). Awesome. Phone quote was $20 for a 6" cake. Went to pick up the cake ~12:10p; parking was not bad but I almost missed the shop because of the location. Store was clean, bakery cases had a good deal of inventory. Outside the store, there's a little outdoor café type area (they also do espressos in the shop). Was greeted immediately. Told them who I was and she went right away to the back to get the cake. While I was waiting, I looked at the mini cupcakes and the macarons. Longingly. Like a fat man on a diet kind of longing. Nice size, not overly puffy like some others on the island. Cookie part should not show its insides, and it didn't here. When she came back with the cake WHICH WAS DONE WHEN THEY SAID (yay!!!), which was beautiful and looked appropriately handmade, she asked if I wanted to make a sampler of the mini cupcakes. Oh, you temptress, you. OF COURSE I DO. Mini cupcakes were brought home and halved w/the other half. Maybe because they were minis, all the mini cakes were moist and perfect. Rich flavors. Tastefully decorated. Presentation packaged. -Salted caramel (lovely amount of salt; a lot of caramel frosting; chocolate filling; chocolate shavings) -Pistachio (white cream center, great taste, not overly sweet) -Strawberry guava (a damn pretty cupcake; all your Hello Kitty needs fulfilled) -Chocolate and peanut butter (deeply upscale Reese's) -Coffee and macadamia nut crunch (prominent coffee taste; chocolate filling) -Chocolate raspberry (another looker; not overly sweet) Yep, I read the macaron reviews. But macarons do have to have a significant chew...it ain't a Nutter Butter. So I had to know. To the tune of 8 macarons. -Frankenberry -Blue Hawaii (which my family ate even before I could get a picture) -Red Velvet -Green Tea -Guava ...and I don't remember the names of the others. Yes, it's bad. It's the sugar. She also offered me a free Blue Hawaii macaron while I was picking out flavors (wow! mahalos!). It had a very nice pineapple and coconut flavor. Good balance; not overly sweet. A bit of crunch and softly tooth-resistant, but more chew than crunch, which is how a well-made macaron should be. Not soggy. Just enough filling. Great flavor. Flakes of coconut in the macaron, but not too many. All in all, a beautifully made thing. Cake was SO pretty and appropriate. Even had a few sprinkles on it--more birthday than corporate function. Toasted coconut pressed on the sides; layers were lovely and frosting to cake ratio was perfect. And just so ya know, these folk are probably the ONLY PEOPLE IN THE AINA WHO DO GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE now. Yep, Liliha Bakery discontinued it. Dee Lite doesn't do it. Neither does Hokulani, Sugarlina, or any of the usual suspects. Not Zippy's, not Safeway, not Anna Millers, etc. But if my fellow Yelpers in-the-know do know who else does a full-on German chocolate cake, help a sister out, puh-leeze. Cause this is probably going to be a recurring birthday thing, and I may go deaf next time if Cake Works ever stops making the stuff. Ordered a cake for a birthday, asked to put the number 27 on the side and they ended up putting 22. Clearly in the emails being sent to each other it said the number 27. We called to ask them about it and they said it was a error on my end by us saying to put 22. I have the email showing 27. They looked at the email and figured out they were at fault. They told me it was too late and nothing they could do about it. I was told they were going to call me the next day which never happened. I got an email from them 2 days later saying they would give me 5% back for the mistake. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. You spend $500 on a cake and you expect it to be what you ordered. This review has been way overdue but I pass it a lot to forget my experience. My husband had bought me a birthday cake here one year, a guava cake, and it was really good! So I though I could get my graduation cake here! I had not been in so I did not know what to expect other than "friendly ladies" as he put it. Unfortunately that was not the case for me! First, not only was the lady rude and seemed annoyed at the questions I was asking but she didn't even write the order correctly. It was as if I was wasting her time from baking, or so I was told she was the baker. I started to even feel bad thinking I was asking too many questions but maybe I should have just left instead because as a paying customer, you should take all the questions one may have if you expect them to pay over $100 for a cake! I was asking about a visual for size to the cake and still needed up with a bigger cake than I wanted. Second, for the $100+ cake that I still ordered, giving that lady the benefit of the doubt that maybe she was just having a bad day, and this is how I know she didn't write the order correctly because it was all wrong! The design on the cake- WRONG! The color of the cake and trim- WRONG! The flavor was the only thing right. So once they showed me at pick up and I told them that was not what I ordered, the girl just looked at me like she didn't know what to do!! It wasn't her fault since she didn't make the cake but she looked over the order and saw some of the info was written but not followed but that's all. She apologized but I was in a hurry and could not stay and wait for her to think of something so I just grabbed the cake and left. Needless to say, I haven't been back since. They have good cakes but unfortunately not worth the poor customer service and eye rolling that comes with it! If you don't appreciate your customers then why even bother going back?? read more

It pains me to give them so few stars because I enjoy eating their cake but when it comes to a wedding cake, it's not just about the flavor. Sigh. So if all you want is a tasty cake with good value, this is your place. But unfortunately it was our wedding. So overall, the cake flavor I loved. Abi was great. Value is good. But customer service and the actual cake decorations: blargh. that's how I get to the stars. I will say I think they are very reasonably priced, even for fancy cakes. So first off, free cake tasting; no appointment needed, 7 days a week. They are happy to let you try it all so that you're happy and boy is it good. My favorite was the haupia and the strawberries and cream. The butter cakes are only done in cupcake form and they're a little dry so not my thing, but they were still good. The actual flavor: wow, I love the strawberries and cream chiffon cake. So yummy! The haupia chiffon is also quite good but since we got a 4 tier cake, we needed to swap out the chiffon for the butter cake, and it is not nearly as good. They charge you for decorations by the % of the price of the cake, which I thought was weird. I think fondant is like 25% of the price and then we asked for initials to be place on the cake and that was another %. We provided them ribbon to place around the base of the cake and they charged us for that but did a good job. So here's where the issue came in: one of our initials was barely hanging on. It was falling all over the place and yep, makes for strange looking wedding photos when that letter is just drooping all over. And this wasn't even that late! It's a good thing we cut the cake fairly quickly (about 3.5 hours after it arrived) otherwise who knows where that letter would have fallen. So for all they charge on the decoration, it didn't matter. We kept it simple too and still yet the cake was falling apart. They don't have the most organized system of filing stuff away and once I went in and they had no idea where my order was. A little worrisome but in the end it was ok. Abi is absolutely easy to work with and super friendly. The other people in the shop are quite variable. Some were super nice and friendly and some were really standoffish and not so nice to work with. So if you don't like the person you work with, try again. You might luck out. Or you might get the same unfriendly person again. read more

I'll be honest... when choosing a cake vendor for our wedding on Oahu, we weren't too picky. I guess it's because we were planning the wedding from San Francisco, and since we had to accept that first-hand test testing wasn't really a possibility, the cake wasn't something we figured we'd put a lot of energy into. However, when the cake vendor we thought we were going to go with backed out 5 weeks before the wedding (ooo... THAT is a one star Yelp review in queue), we put faith in our wedding planner to find us a backup. She found Cake Works. They ended up being super easy to work with. We ordered a very simple 3-tier cake (we had about 120 guests), strawberry guava butter cream flavor (my inner girly-girl loved that the inside of our cake was pink), white buttercream frosting. It was tasty! And at what we thought was a very reasonable price (full transparency: about $500). I'd definitely recommend them to the next soon-to-be newlyweds. For an additional perspective, maybe I'll write an update on our one-year anniversary, after we have a bite of the top tier of our cake (which we saved and is currently chilling in out freezer) ;). I would give it 4 stars for the awesome service they provided and my experience but my cake loving dessert connoisseur taste buds would disagree otherwise and make sure the reviews on the taste of this cake shop. They had a 6 inch salted caramel cake I was looking for last minute for a friends birthday. They were able to reserve one and when I came to pick it up, the girl at the counter was super helpful and even put a sign on a chocolate piece and provide us with plates and forks and a knife. In addition we used the yelp macaron deal and just paid the difference for the hello kitty macaron. The presentation of the cake was beautiful and simple. As for the salted cake itself, it was quite disappointing especially after seeing reviews and note worthy mentionings of being recognized by the knot weddings. The cake was very very dry and I barely tasted any salted caramel. We had it at a party and no one seemed to have touched or taken any slices of the cake. Even cutting into the cake was really hard. I just hope the rest of their cakes, cupcakes and goodies aren't as disappointing as the salted caramel cake I bought. read more

We drive by this cake shop at least 5-6 times a week, so we finally decided to stop by and check it out. I really wanted to like this place. I had pretty high expectations because of the yelp reviews, but I was quite disappointed when we finally bit into our supposed "treats". The red velvet and peanut butter chocolate mini cupcakes were $1.65 each and about the size of my 2-thumbs. They weren't lying about it being bite size because it wasn't enough to be anything more than just one bite. The sad part was that the cupcakes were really dry and the frosting was kind of hard and dry. We also bought 5 macaroons at $2 each. Being that I'm a big macaroon lover, I was really excited that they had the salted caramel flavor...which was probably the only flavor that was edible out of the bunch. The other 3 flavors were just ok. They were dry and flaky. Pretty much fell apart after just one bite. Also, they were all odd sizes, not equally sized as they should be since they are all priced at $2 each. You'd think they'd try to make them the same size so customers who end up getting the smaller pieces wouldn't feel cheated. read more

My birthdays are centered around my birthday cake. I love pretty cakes and don't mind spending money on them. I've ordered my last three birthday cakes from Cake Works and I was never disappointed. I normally have an idea of the type of cake I want before going down to order it. The staff at Cake Works are very friendly and will make sure your order is detailed correctly. They will work with pictures so that they know what you want. All my cakes, normally for 20-25 people, ran bet $160-270. Not cheap but worth it. All were chocolate (my fave) and decorated with fondant. I usually order it two weeks before my party and that's more than enough time. My first cake had a "glitz and glam" theme, with a crown and shoe on top. My second cake had a "flower" theme, with various colors of flowers adorning the top. Sadly, my recent purchase from this bakery drops my rating from four stars to one. I brought a cake for a dinner party. The cake was misshapen, under baked, and poorly decorated. I've purchased other cakes that I've been pleased with. This cake was a waste of money. The owner offered to bake another cake. Unfortunately, that offer came late Saturday afternoon. My party was scheduled for Sunday night. No time for delivery as shop is not open on Sunday. I'm very disappointed. read more

I came here because I was craving for something sweet and i knew a cupcake would do the job. I always wanted to try M.C.B's before it went out of business but i was too late so i cant really compare who's better...=P... i walked in and its pretty small. They had a good selection of desserts, cakes, cupcakes, brownies, oat bars, lemon bars, just to name a few. Well at the time when i went, which was around 1 pm, there were only 2 kinds of cupcakes, chocolate and red velvet, idk if they have more flavors or they just ran out of the rest but i chose the red velvet because i'm on the search for a good red velvet. At $1.83 a piece (w/ tax) it was pretty good. There was enough frosting to satisfy and compliment the cupcake, the cake itself was pretty moist. I decided to go back for my salted caramel macarons as promised. However they had a chocolate hearts macaron in honor of Valentine's Day..maybe? That was another winner. It was larger than the other macarons and had a great chocolate taste. This time, the macron fillings weren't runny, so my cookies didn't slide anywhere. I must say the salted caramels are still my favorite. The filling has a great sugar and butter caramel filling that literally melts in your mouth..cliche I know..but just no other way to describe it. If you check in, they give you a free macaron with a purchase. I'm liking them more and more. read more

The good news: the lilikoi chiffon cake with mandarin orange is awesome!! Probably the best thing you can get there. We ordered a full sheet of this and another specialty cake one week prior to the event and cake works was able to deliver. The grooms cake was designed like the companion cube from the game portal, and we were very satisfied with the design. We walked in and scheduled a cake tasting for a later time on the same day. The bad news: during the tasting, we noticed that almost all the cakes were on the dry side, which made the lilikoi chiffon cake was the obvious choice. We also got the strawberry guava cake for the grooms cake. Unfortunately, the strawberry guava cake delivered was dry, and we couldn't really eat it, but it had a good flavor. The other thing is that the full sheet cake was supposed to be pre-cut and it wasn't, which made the first piece a really awkward shape. The line was forming faster than the cake could be cut. However, all of our guests enjoyed the chiffon cake and some will probably be ordering one for themselves soon. The only thing I will be going back there for is the lilikoi chiffon cake. SO.... I have had an obsession with parisian macaron since discovering them in Paris in 2006. I love them, and up until now, have only found decent ones at La Tour Cafe on Nimitz... However, I have been finding Cake Works at just about every street event, food truck show, farmers market, and pop up event lately, and I am always finding new and exciting flavors, colors, and presentation options. I love their chocolate coffee flavor. I love their lemon martini flavor. I love the red velvet. In fact, I love them all. I haven't met one yet that I did not like. The alcoholic, adult flavors are especially fun and different.... I vote for an irish cream flavor, dipped in dark chocolate.... Or perhaps a tiramisu flavor dipped in chocolate, then rolled in toasted pistaccios, with a candied maraccino cherry buttercream inside.... O_o. Yes please. And the staff are amazing and really really sweet as well. So make your mouth happy and shove a half dozen of their delightful macaron's in there... you won't regret it. read more
