If you are traveling I-69 between Indianapolis and Evansville this is the perfect place to stop for breakfast (served all day), coffee and pastries or a home cooked lunch. It's well worth the one mile drive from the Interstate to 618 Main Street in Petersburg. Located in a 130 year-old former bank building, Cakes and Coffee Cafe offers wonderful in-house prepared pastries, gourmet coffees and daily lunch specials. A favorite of the locals, you will want to browse owner Randy Harris' collection of historic memorabilia that graces the walls. And signing your name inside the old bank vault adds to the experience. Really, this is a place not to be missed.

Definitely a good place to grab a coffee. Staff was nice Cake was a little dry so that's why I rated it at 4 and not 5.

The waitress told me the beef for the burgers is from Dewig's so I was sold on the blue cheese burger then. Let me tell you, the bacon was crispy and the burger was out of this world. My family also butchers our own beef and this was as good or better! I started to order the crisps to check those out when my daughter told me that they have house cut fries. Love those! Great meal and we were stuffed!!! BUT we were Informed that the dessert was made in house so we got the chocolate ganache cake to go. Had it at home. So glad we split it, the slice was HUGE.

The decor was eclectic and reminiscent of a trip to a hip Grandma's kitchen. The plates are all mix matched older patterns and lend a fun vibe to the interior. The room is a big open space but with lots of cozy spots. They have a room for a separate party and the servers were on point despite it being a busy morning. The food was perfect comfort food with amazing fried chicken on a smothered biscuit. Yum! My friend's French toast was very cinnamony which she loved. I would've given a five star review but the service was very slow and 2 stars at best. It could have been more prompt and efficient. We waited for seven minutes before our first acknowledgement by our waiter/ server. It was just my girlfriend and myself. Once the waiter finally came to the table and took our order a lot time had lapse. Never once did come to ask how the food was once our main entrée was delivered. He asked how everything was when he presented the check. During the wait for him to return to the table to take our dessert order, there was a bus boy at the nearby table clearing another table. I asked him to take a plate that was left on our table and he said that the servers job I don't do that. I told him no you need to take it now and he gave me a rather rude look and stare. The intervals from which the waiter came back to the table was very long. It would've helped if the chairs had been padded but they were hard with like school room chairs. The dining room was decorated very nice and the decor and artwork is very tasteful. Music was a little loud. The food was exceptionally good from the appetizer to the main course to our dessert. It was exceptional. That is five stars ONLY - The service really was a lot to be desired for a good tip and review.

Even with all the space they look pretty busy whenever I pass by, but that's only been on weekends, so it may be quieter during the week. On a weekend afternoon, though, you will not find quiet here. They have all the standard drinks you expect at a coffee shop and lots of fun specials, but the food selection is a little limited. I think they normally serve soup Mon-Sat but they were out when I got there. I got a bagel with schmear, a zebra (chocolate crinkle) cookie, and one of the February specials called "Opposites Attract" which was a raspberry chai latte. Everything I got was pretty good, especially the fresh, chewy zebra cookie. They warmed it up which made it just a little gooey. The raspberry chai was an interesting combination. i wasn't completely sold on the raspberry - I didn't dislike it but probably wouldn't get it again - but I think I liked the chai itself. The baristas and bookstore staff were all welcoming, and the vibe is very inclusive. I've come in and looked around the store a few times, and the staff seems approachable if you need anything but will leave you alone if you're just browsing.

There were many patrons going in and out with bags of donuts when I arrived early morning. I needed a treat to take to an event and, of course, I found out last minute. The shop is pristine and simple. The cases were filled with amazing donuts, cookies and cakes. There was so much to chose from. Those cream pies were incredibly tempting. I opted for a tray of turtle brownies. The brownies were smothered in caramel and nuts. The chocolate brownies was the consistency of a rich fudge. Needless to say, the brownies disappeared fast, so fast that I didn't have a chance to get a photo. The service was quick and friendly and I was off in a flash. Prices are incredibly reasonable. I plan on trying those iconic cookies on my next visit. I highly, recommend.

I'll give them credit for being fresh-fried and having a good dough flavor. The apple fritter was particularly good, with nice big chunks of apple. However, I found some of the donuts (especially the glazed) to be too soft, and many donuts had so much sweetness in the dough that it was overwhelming when taken together with the glaze. They definitely deserve their reputation and their regular crowd, but I don't think I'd make a special trip from Bloomington.
