Very unassuming and I've passed by this bakery so many times. I was looking for cupcakes for a baby shower and decided to do a tasting with family who were visiting. My criteria were they had to be moist, favorable, no heavy sweet icing and large cupcakes. We tried 3 local bakeries and hands down Happy Eatery won in all criteria. We tried several favors including vegan and all were very moist and delicious. For the shower I selected vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet with buttercream icing. The icing is fluffy and the perfect compliment of sweetness to the cupcake favors. The guest loved them and I was fortunate enough to have a few leftovers. I stored them in the refrigerator and 3 days later, they were still moist and tasty after sitting out for 15 minutes or more at room temperature. Emailed them Tuesday night with a request for a birthday cake for Saturday. They responded to my email at 11:42am on the Saturday I needed it offering to bake the cake I need... for tonight. I have no idea if their cakes and what-not are any good, and probably won't ever know. Gotta answer those emails one way or another, sooner than 5 days later and ON the day the customer needs the cake. I am new to the area but needed to take a dessert to a friend's house since I was invited for dinner with the family. I used yelp to find this bakery due to a request for a fruit tart from a 9 year old :). Upon looking at the menu online I ordered many of the various kinds of tarts online and picked them up at my designated time. They were all both beautiful and delicious. For my husband's birthday I ordered a vegan cake for 10 people with cream filling and chocolate frosting. The filling was supposed to have berries. Literally there were about 10 blueberries in the filling. I paid $50 for the cake and while it tasted good, I expected more in the filling. It was very simple and small. read more

My review only pertains to a cake tasting for our wedding - sorry to all of you cupcake lovers! The Boy and I went in for a wedding cake tasting that we set up. The lady doing the tasting was around 15 minutes late (which actually wasn't a problem as the Boy was stuck in traffic...). When she came over she asked us what we were looking for in a cake and took a couple notes. Then she brought over a red solo plastic plate with two cheap plastic forks and some pieces of white cake with a few dollops of different kinds of frosting. She gave us different combinations of cakes with frostings on our cheap forks to try. We were discussing what we liked/didn't like and she basically just made a lot of assumptions and gave an estimate for combinations we didn't necessarily want. The biggest disappointment? The cake was horrible! And when we asked about trying other types of cake we were told they didn't have any. Who ONLY orders crappy white cake for a several hundreds dollar wedding cake?!!! This is by far the most disappointing thus far. There weren't many options to choose from, so I opted for Red Velvet. A classic and it's usually a pretty good indicator of what the rest of their cupcakes are like. The cake itself was decent, but tasted no different than a cake I would get at Harris Teeter or Target and the icing was hard as a rock. Perhaps you're supposed to let them thaw first? I'm not sure. But, I definitely wasn't impressed. Additionally, the cupcake was over $3 and was tiny. I'm not opposed to paying over $3 for a cupcake, but this is in Manassas and there was nothing good about it! One year I needed a cake last minute notice and they were able to pull together a baby shower cake in no time. Excellent cupcakes and pastries. If they have the Hostess style chocolate cream filled cupcakes give them a try. They taste like your memory of Hostess when you were three. I wanted a special cake for my sons graduation party from VA Tech so I didn't really mind spending $100 to get one. What I received didn't seem all that special to me. I think I could have purchased something from the grocery store that would have been just as nice for half the price. It was kind of plain and the hand writing was kind of sloppy. Maybe it's because I arrived 15 minutes early and it wasn't ready so they felt rushed. Why would they wait until the last minute to get it decorated? The one saving grace is the sponge cake and butter cream icing tasted pretty good. Regardless, I'll be going somewhere else for my other sons high school graduation cake in 2 weeks. Was expecting something above bland and this place didn't even measure above that. 2stars given for cute displays and adorable quotient of their cupcakes. The cupcakes I tried were Oreo & raspberry. Both were super dry, I'm assuming because they should not have been kept in the refrigerated cases. If you're a bakery - you should have storage of your product down and unfortunately they don't. Also their prices ($3 each) are the same as Sprinkles and more than Georgetown Cupcakes, both with super expensive DC storefront costs. How is that possible?? read more

I am so impressed by Happy Eatery's cakes. I used to frequent there when they were located in Centreville and was heart broken to learn that they had moved further away. Their cakes are light, fluffy and delicious. Perfect for asian taste buds, which generally don't like sweeter desserts. They are also phenomenal for other flavored cakes, as well. I recently went to a bridal shower and the cake was provided by Happy Eatery - it was delicious, savory red velvet. I was also very impressed by the design. It had a black and red corset with black ribbons going down the sides. We also ordered a cake from Happy Eatery for my mom's 60th birthday. It was delicious mocha flavor and very tastefully done (pun intended, hehehe.) The price was also reasonable and could easily feed 20-25 people. I have definitely become a regular patron of Happy Eatery and intend to keep on patronizing them in the future!!! read more

We ordered an 8" gluten-free chocolate cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberry filling and cream cheese icing. The cake was moist and lightly sweetened which was a great contrast to the sugary icing. The fresh strawberries in the middle were a decadent touch. The decorator was careful to create the exact custom design I requested and it looked gorgeous! At least ten people who regularly consume gluten had a slice of cake and raved about it. The bakery has tinkered with the flour ratios to create a very memorable cake sans gluten! If you are lucky, a gf cupcake will be available if you drop in... Ordered a remake of my wedding cake for my husband and I's anniversary. Heavily disappointed with the result. The cake looked like it was thrown together at the last minute. The chocolate was smudged and not completely covering the half of the cake. The center white fondant looked like someone threw it on, shrugged their shoulders and said "Good enough" The sponge itself was good, and the chocolate buttercream on the outside was good as well. We had it filled with strawberry and chocolate mousses, both severely lacked flavor and if I were to close my eyes I probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between the two. I paid $102 for the custom designed cigar cake to feed 20. While the design was OK... just ok... the cake was tasteless and DRY!! What a waste. Our dinner guests were disappointed as were we. I called the morning of my sisters graduation. I wasn't expecting to get a customized cake since it was the morning of, but the order taker said she could get it done. She asked what kind of cake I wanted I explained to her that the detail on the cake didn't really matter just something simple and elegant but what I wanted was for it to taste good! I wanted a vanilla sponge cake with cheesecake filling and strawberries in the middle. She said she could do it and I wanted to pick it up at 4. 3 o'clock came along and I was ready to pick up. I knew I told her 4 but I thought id call to check if it's ready. The person that answers the phone told me it was ready so I drive across town (15-20 min away) I get there and it's not ready!!! What a disappointment! I told the cashier lady when I called someone told me it was ready and she didn't seem to care that I had just driven close to 20 minutes to get this cake. I went back home picked it up at the time it was supposed to get picked up and it still wasn't ready by 4. When it was time to eat it no one liked it. The vanilla sponge was not moist enough. And the cream cheese filling wasn't sweet enough. I got a bland,dry cake with poor customer service for $90. What a rip off!!! Our Company has catered from Happy Eatery a couple of times. I must say I am very disappointed with their ingredients, portion size and most of all flavoring. We have catered from them for Empanadas. It is a savory puff pastry with a stew filling. When we received them the filling was little to non existence. It was just airy pastry dough. The dough itself was greasy and over buttery. We had a few more items from them but the one that was the last straw was their Cajun Selection. The rice in their "jambalaya" flavorless with very little chicken and sausage. The rice had no seasoning what so ever. The chicken was also bland and flavorless. The sausage no flavor but overly spicy. I honestly do not understand how you have a spicy flavorless sausage. The sausage quality itself was also disappointing. Each time they have catered for our company after only a few bites, I had to throw the entire dish away and then go out to buy my own meal down the road.
