The rubina ones are stale and hard like a rock.

My husband ordered 3 flavors of cupcakes and they were literally the worst cupcakes we've ever had. The driest, hardest cupcake ever with mediocre frosting. These tasted stale, like they were sitting out for days. How can you own a cake shop and be this bad at the one thing you're supposed to be good at? Update: we picked up some cupcakes from whole foods to make up for how terrible the rubina ones were; I've included pictures for comparison and the taste is 100 times better.

We saw a tv report about Rubina and decided to give them a try for a birthday party. We ordered Macaroons and a German Chocolate cake. I must say both were amazing. We've used Zingermans several times and always enjoyed their products. I'd have to say this was just as good if not better.

I would highly recommend Rubina based off my experience with her cake making for my mom's 70th birthday. The event was very important to me, and Rubina really made me feel confident that she would deliver. In the end she exceeded my expectations because not only was the cake beautiful and perfect, just as we planned, but it was also delicious!! The final product was great, but it was also the process that impressed me. She's a very sweet lady who listens and spent the time to really make sure we were on the same page regarding expectations and plans, via email/phone/in person. I got the feeling she really cared. I trusted her recommendations for flavor recommendations and received many compliments from the guests, plus I'm still craving some more! She took me through the options for edible flowers, silk flowers or fresh flowers (which need to be placed by florist/yourself) and I went with the latter.

Had an amazing experience with Cakes by Rubina! I planned my sister's baby shower in Ann Arbor from Boston, and Rubina was so incredibly kind and creative to work with! She made the whole process so easy, and the cake was delicious. Everyone was talking about how amazing it looked and tasted!

This is the cake I received for his 30th birthday.

After reading the reviews and looking at her cakes on the website I was really excited to order my boyfriend's 30th birthday cake from her. I sent her a photo of the exact way I wanted the cake and even further detailed photos of what I wanted. I have to say I was extremely disappointed when I picked the cake up. It wasn't at all what I ordered. Then Rubina said that the cake wasn't big enough to do what I had asked, but not once did she tell me my requests couldn't be accommodated because of the size. Had I known I would have ordered a larger cake. Not to mention everything on the original cake was made from fondant and when I picked up mine, it was just printed edible paper laid on some fondant. She did try to remedy situation by giving me a $10 discount, but when I'm already paying $80 for a cake, I would have expected it to be right. The taste of the cake itself was okay, nothing extraordinary. Sadly I've had better cakes from a supermarket. I really wanted his birthday cake to be something special, and it was just mediocre. The only good thing about the day was my boyfriend thought the cake was awesome looking.

    4-year-old cake!

Thank you for making my girl's 4-year-old birthday a big success! My sweetheart just loved it so much! Will definitely recommend you to all my friends!

The perfect cake for Law School graduation.

I saw an ad for a Grain Latte (mi-su-ga-ru) and was so curious how it would taste. I haven't noticed it anywhere else (other Korean bakeries), so had to make a trip just for the drink, along with their other goodies. Omg, from the first sip, I was transported back to my childhood. I used to drink the multigrain drink that would come in powder form. But this drink was elevated by the espresso. What a perfect combo! Now this latte isn't sweet, so if you are looking for sweet, this won't be the drink for you. I had my hubs try it out and said he could taste espresso with an aftertaste of the grains- not something he would order, himself. But I'm definitely going to! He ordered the pistachio latte and I could tell it's very different from other ps's I've had from Monday Coffee Club or from Yemeni coffee houses. It definitely has that light, Korean, nutty taste that isn't strong. The baked goodie, I'm happy to say, has expanded and they offer so much more than they did since my last review. They've added a few nice tables and chairs, so you don't have to leave to enjoy your pastries or coffee, unless there's no spots. Highly recommend Y if you enjoy desserts that's not too sweet.

I'm used to the huge glass case varieties from Tous les jours or Paris Baguette and love the flaky pastries or novelties the best! Yoon's was bread and bun heavy and their prices overall were higher (if you can believe it!). I did try this Cloud cake $6.50 that was out of this world good but the strawberry jam part was too sweet. The hazelnut cream sandwich loaf (3 small servings) was so beans good with my favorite type of cream that only Asian bakeries can get right! My only complaint is more cream, please!

The case was absolutely gorgeous - filled with both yeast and cake donuts as well as this ham and cheese filled pretzel that I had read about and an amazing looking sticky bun. I was trying to get to work so I didn't have time to take a lot of photos. I chose the cake, chocolate covered donut, and the ham and cheese stuffed pretzel. I have no picture of this donut because I ate it in the car on the way to work because I just couldn't stand it. It was phenomenal. Of course a cake donut has a different texture than a yeast doughnut And it was soft yet cakey. I thought the chocolate icing was amazing. It was a little sweet, but I loved that about it. There are tables inside and a couple tables outside but as it is 29° I didn't sit outside. I jumped in my car and ate my donut on the way to work. The woman behind the counter said she is one of the owners, but I didn't get her name. I am bad. But she was lovely and just so kind.

The cinnamon rolls are worth it, and this latest trip had me going for a yuzu lemon meringue bar, which struck the perfect balance of not too sweet, but also not a bland flavorless hellscape, which a lot of "not too sweet" dessert can fall into. Rather tempted to make the trip and get one again before they go away for the year.
