As someone with celiac disease, normally when you get baked goods you feel like you are either rolling the dice on major cross contamination or settling for a sad fascimile of what a "real" baked good should taste like. I wanted to like this place. It was hidden behind the back of a building with poor signage. The outside had a cute patio. We did go late in the day near closing time, but there wasn't much to choose from. Just $5 brownies and small items. Very dark inside, dark display and dark lighting so it was hard to see the items. Not ideal for a bakery. We got a half chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie and a Ho-Ho. Cookie was just ok. I don't know what the Ho-Ho was but I am certain it wasn't a Ho-Ho, even though it looked like one. I was expecting a white cream inside. Nope. It was like a weird German chocolate cake filling minus the nuts and sweetener. Very strange. In all fairness the cake part was good. So 2 stars because that's hard to do. I requested this and actually forgot to leave the review. I found this bakery and put in an order for a vegan carrot cake. The owner was quick to respond and very helpful with planning. When we came to pick up the cake we were told to immediately put the cake in a cold place. In the middle of august. During rush hour. Had we been told that before coming to pick up the cake we would ah e brought a cooler. So while we tried to get home quickly(30m away with no traffic) I had the A/C blasting and all I could do was watch the cake collapse before my eyes. I paid $60 for a big mushy mess. I was devastated because it was for my boyfriend's birthday party. Clearly I've never been back and I never plan to. Fun hidden spot, but greasy peanut butter oat bars, and tough, tasteless chocolate items. This place is hidden in the back of an old warehouse complex; follow the main building filled with yoga studios around to the left, then go into the house-like structure between the warehouse and the theater. The peanut butter oatmeal bar was tasty, but heavy on the oil. I was less impressed with the chocolate covered doughnut (tough) and chocolate cup (fine filling, but impressively dry crust). They can make a pour-over, but with minimal seating it's more grab-and-go than sit-and-sip. Neat location, but I'll pass on the actual baked goods. read more

Perfect birthday treats. My husband & I are on a very low sugar/no gluten food program and I wanted something special for his 55th birthday. I stopped in and picked up a selection (brownies, cookies, bars, tartlets) of goodies. They were a tremendous hit with all our guests! Delicious and healthy! Pretty great for a vegan/gluten-free bakery! The bakery is tiny and a little hard to find, but if you're in search for a good gluten-free/vegan dessert bakery, it's worth the adventure. The cookies are delicious, and I would definitely recommend them to others. Each item is labeled with a name and a short ingredient summary. The baker was super nice (even after I walked into the kitchen entrance by mistake - sorry!) and helped me and my girlfriend choose delicious treats for our walk across town. The flourless peanut butter cookie was probably the best peanut butter cookie I've ever had, and I've had a lot of cookies. I'm honestly not sure how they got that much peanut butter flavor into one cookie, but it's a culinary miracle. It was light, crumbly, and just the right amount of sweet. The location is honestly the only thing holding this place back. It's located on the outskirts of town and required you to actively search for the building entrance after you've found the parking lot. It's hidden behind a few other businesses and appears to almost be a home from the outside. Once inside, the actual cafe area is pretty small. However, once you get past the somewhat sketchy location and small cafe size, you'll be delighted with semi-healthy sweets that would fool any non-vegan/gluten-free eater. Bottom Line: If you're in search for a specialty bakery, you really need to try Tasty Bakery. While the location is a bit inconvenient and hard-to-find, it'll be absolutely worth it. read more

While browsing the Kerrytown Farmer's Market, I was lucky enough to stumble upon this booth with gluten-free delights. I'm newly vegan, and was looking for what options I had at a farmer's market. I asked what the vegan options were and was pleasantly surprised! The Peanut Butter Granola Square is without a doubt the best thing I've tasted in WEEEEEEEEEKS! I cannot wait until next weekend so I can stock up on these to get me through the weekdays. I called the day before I needed a cake for my son's birthday and Ron graciously accommodated me, even though they usually require 48 hours' notice for a cake. My son said the vanilla cake with chocolate frosting that I ordered was so good. He and all his non-gluten-free friends loved it. I stumbled across this bakery on Facebook through a paleo group that I am a part of. Please note I don't live a paleo lifestyle because I want to, it's because I have to due to severe food sensitivities and allergies. Finding a paleo treat is hard enough on its own but finding a tasty treat is even harder. Let me tell you, Tasty lives up to their name. While I live quite literally 1,300 miles away from the bakery and have never been to Ann Arbor, I went ahead and ordered through their website and had them shipped to Texas. My gosh, it was a pleasant surprise to have them arrive and taste so darn yummy! Ran, the owner, even went out of his way to verify that I received them. He mentioned sending to this area of the country has never been done before and I did let him know that they did arrive a bit misshaped but still delicious. I don't fault Tasty for the misshape--it is a Texas summer. Chocolate melts but it doesn't make it any less tasty! Any given summer day in Texas, it reaches 100 degrees and 110+ degree heat index. I knew the chances and still ordered because I had to try their tarts. Ran reached out to apologize and wanted to issue a refund. I declined. I am happy to support a business like this and I don't want my money back for a product I thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't Tasty's fault and their product was so delicious--I can barely withstand 100 degree heat, I don't blame chocolate for doing what it does. To sum it up friends, give Tasty a try! I tried the donut, peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies, cashew butter and berry bars, and strawberry cupcake. I also had a coffee. They also have savory food items like quiche and soup. Since I'm vegan and have celiac, everything was so fun to experience. The baker had dairy free creamer for my coffee which was fantastic, and all the baked goods were perfectly sweet. Everything is great here. The grain free bread is some of the best I have had. It is dense, so don't go looking for sourdough or crusty bread. Perfect sliced thin and toasted, and the loaf lasts a good while that way. All the deserts are great, hoping they start to add some more variety. Some paleo options would be nice. read more

I stopped into Tasty Bakery for the first time last week to pick up a treat for my birthday. It was one of the only gluten free bakeries listed in the downtown Ann Arbor area, and I was really excited to try some of their vegan & low sugar options! It was a little off the normal path, but not far from Main Street at all. When I told the lady at the counter that I was after a birthday treat, she gave me two delicious vanilla cupcakes!! In addition I bought a berry bar and a chocolate covered doughnut. I was really excited to try them all, but I hadn't had a doughnut in years! All of them were delicious and I'm really glad that I stopped in! Later in my journey around downtown, I also saw some of their baked goods at Lab coffee shop. I would be really interested in trying the doughnut & berry bar in apple cinnamon versions, especially in the fall! There are both Vegan and GF options, and the owner is so kind and helpful. Even more, they take the time to get quality ingredients. Farm-fresh eggs, grass fed butter (not Vegan), and coconut sugar. Tasty Bakery is great, and I can only hope that their storefront does well. It's back around where the Ann Arbor YMCA is; you have to pull into the parking lot off Huron and go around to the back, where you'll find their small store. It is very much a pick-up-and-go spot, rather than a café where you can buy some goodies and sit down and relax. Even though it is pretty close to downtown, I find myself hardly going, just because it's about a 10-minute walk outside with not much else around it. That said, they do have a lot of their goods available for sale in various coffee shops and markets around Ann Arbor, and they're at the farmer's market on Saturdays (where I first discovered them). Highly recommend the cashew butter bar, which is pricey ($5), but very dense, fudgey, and delicious. Many thanks to the employee who recommended it to me! I haven't gotten anything here that I haven't liked, including brownies, almond tartlets, peanut butter and cashew butter bars, and cookies. I noticed they had a few new items at the last farmer's market I went to, and I'd definitely love to see occasional additions/seasonal items on the menu to add a little variety (and I am a predictable, sheep-like consumer--I'll always come back for my favorites, but I'll be even more drawn to stop by if I know there might be NEW AND SHINY menu items that I don't want to miss out on seeing). Bottom line: you'll enjoy it regardless of whether you're on any special diet or not. And if you are...definitely check them out. read more

Tasty is my favorite! The owner is so kind and genuine. I always say hi to him at the Kerrytown farmer's market. Everything is freshly made and delicious! My favorite is the cashew bar which is very rich. The peanut butter bar is also amazing. It's very dense and filling. Whenever I see cafes or restaurants selling Tasty products, I get really excited. I know they are available at Argus Farm Stop and Mighty Good Coffee. I love supporting local businesses and am willing to pay the price for something I know has been made with love. read more

I purchased a Groupon for Tasty Bakery on a whim just to try it out. I don't have any dietary restrictions, but I'm always up to try some delicious baked goods and Tasty Bakery did not disappoint! Almost everything I tried was vegan but it had no effect on the quality of the goods. I absolutely recommend their peanut butter cookie (especially if they have it dipped in chocolate) as it was the best item I purchased. I also tried their oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, chocolate zucchini bread, triple berry bar, and chocolate tartlet, all of which were vegan. The only non-vegan item I had were the hamantashen, which had a few different fillings. I opted for the poppyseed and dark chocolate filled ones and was very impressed. Overall, Tasty Bakery completely satisfied my sweet tooth and I will definitely be back for more. I had a vegan friend also try most of the items I purchased and she will be purchasing from them in the near future. She was very impressed with the vegan goods she tasted. If you can stop by their table at the Ann Arbor farmer's market, do so. It will be worth the stop and very convenient if you're already there. read more

I ordered gluten free cupcakes for my son's birthday. He is a student and I live far away so ordered over the phone. The owners were very nice and offered many flavor options for both the cupcakes and the frosting - and both gluten free and gluten free plus vegan. I ordered vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, some with vanilla and some with chocolate frosting. My son said they were some of the best cupcakes he ever had. His friends enjoyed them too. I offered to pay in advance since I was having someone else pick them up, but instead the owners called me after they had been picked up and I paid via credit card. Overall a great experience.
