Taste wise, chef Perrin is good- the decorating was horrifying and I was SO EMBARRASSED because I made the cake a focal point of the reception. If you want a plain wedding cake- and I mean PLAIN- do NOT believe her when she says she can create "anything" - I asked for 2 tiny bumble bees and she made these huge balls- they looked like locusts made by a child. The cake looked NOTHING like the inspiration photo, the "peach" color looked dirty/muddy. It collapsed before the reception even started- and the gorgeous swing I paid extra for..... they had to put a table under it, to make the cake look less lopsided. So it was on a swing...sitting on a table- it was ridiculous -and she completely ignored what we spoke about, regarding flowers on top. Look closely at her photos and if you like the way those look- fine- but don't expect anything outside the box or I think you could be very sorry. Anyway, yes, we had our wedding cake done here and it was pretty good. We didn't really have many (ANY?) other local options, so they kind of have a corner on the Mad River Valley market.... There's a fairly wide variety of flavors and frostings, and you can choose as many different layers of cake as you want, so the flexibility is nice. I would say not to expect anything terribly fancy or the most beautiful intricate cake though. I gave Perrin a picture of what I wanted the cake to look like; it didn't really come out the same, and it was also slanted when it arrived at the wedding venue. The cake itself- we had 3 different flavors- was pretty fresh and moist, so that's good. Our main cake was spice cake with maple carmalized apples as filling- a good fall flavor. I don't really like buttercream frosting, but it was the only other non-chocolate choice other than fondont. I think the best was our groom's cake, which had chocolate fudge icing. Overall, I'd try out places in Burlington and elsewhere and see what you get there....the pricing here really wasn't cheap and the cake was only ok to fairly good. You also have to pay a $50 tasting fee, which is waived only if you end up using them. BUT, you do get to take home your samples.

The soup and croissant knocked my socks off. I had visions of Oliver Twist slurping up stew and saying, "please sir, I want some more sir." Mmm....just thinking about it now warms my stomach. Note: this place is no frills. Waterbury offers free community wifi but it can be spotty in this location. The charm of this place is definitely the outdoor patio and fact that you have to stroll through an alley to find it. Double note: they sell breads, gingersnap cookies, croissants and a few other baked treats. The owner told me that he has been operating via wholesale for years but just recently opted to open up for a mini café section. Hallelujah.

The hard part was narrowing down the options, because everything we tasted was outstanding. We ended up with macaroons, shortbread, hand pies, chocolate chip cookies, snickerdoodles, two different types of sandwich cookies, and glazed doughnuts with vanilla bean cream. Months after our wedding, our friends and family still rave to us about those doughnuts! Our only regret is that we didn't save a couple of them for ourselves, because they went fast. Shiel was incredibly professional and easy to work with, and we were excited to be able to support and up-and-coming Vermont baker. Jam Bakery was the perfect choice for our wedding, and we can't wait to track down some of her treats the next time we are in Vermont!

With a few brief instructions on timing and where our serving pieces were I was completely free to concentrate on our guests and enjoy myself. She inspired confidence from the start and followed through. Her sense of timing and service was great--she kept the buffet table well supplied as people came back for seconds & thirds and she was engaging and friendly throughout. Now to the food--in a word, FABULOUS. All vegetarian; healthy, fresh, delicious & beautifully presented; her specialty. We started off with a wonderful Cheese Platter that was accompanied with dried figs, maple tamari glazed nuts, buckwheat chees straws and fresh fruit. Later, on the buffet table, we had Rustic Pizza Bites with goat cheese,butternut squash, camelized onions & fried sage, Sweet Pea Dumpings with Mint dipping sauce, Corn & Black Bean Cakes topped with a dollop of Guacamole, Vegetable Spring Rolls with a Thai Almond dipping sauce, and the best warm Artichoke Parmesean Dip EVER (so light & delicious, not heavy & greasy like the ususal). Working with Lisa was comfortable and easy. She responded promptly to emails and phone calls. Though we repeatedly changed our menu, and increased the guest count, Lisa never once declined a requested change. Since we had no official wedding coordinator for our small affair (40 guests), Lisa wisely requested that we provide her with a point-person who could answer any questions during meal preparation. My aunt served in this role, and said that Lisa was very pleasant and easy to work with. The food reviews by all of our guests were overwhelmingly positive. Many people said is was the best wedding dinner they had ever had (that was certainly true for my wife and me). Considering that the guests comprised a large range of dining preferences and dietary restrictions, the positive reviews are that much more impressive. Despite the small size of our wedding, Lisa and her helper were never intrusive. In fact, had she not found my wife and I to complement us and say farewell, I hardly would have known she was present. I would highly recommend Fiddleheads Cuisine for any small event requiring catering. Also, based on my experience, I suspect that the community-supported kitchen service, cooking classes, and in-home cooking service provided by Fiddleheads are all equally meritorious and excellent.
