Had a great time over here with friends the other night. Once we were seated, we immediately got to work on the Chips and Salsa/Bean Dip. That Bean Dip is OFF THE CHAIN. We probably mowed through about 12 of those things throughout the night. I ordered the Strawberry Jalapeño Margarita along with a few other buddies, and we were all quite impressed. It tasted fresh, and they definitely didn't skimp out on the alcohol. Absolutely delicious. As far as the food goes, everyone really enjoyed their plates. I got the Chicken Burrito and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of food I got. It was stacked with Guacamole and Salsa on top. Spanish Rice and Red Sauce were served under the burrito. I could only finish half of it and took the rest home after loading up on Chips and Bean Dip all night. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Calo as well. It's a perfect spot to go out with friends and have some great food and drinks. My only gripe with this spot is the prices are a little aggressive for what you get. I think it'd be much more appealing if the drinks weren't 20 bucks and the food wasn't all $30-$50+. I'd still recommend this to anyone in the area looking for some great upscale Mexican food!
Food: 4-4.25. Came by on a Sunday around 11:30 am for a family get-together. We reserved for 20+ people. We couldn't get a private room because of our group size of 26. There is only inside seating. Staff was friendly and inviting. Our food selections were Salsa/Beans/Chips, Mex City Quesadillas, Taquitos en Tres Salsas, Beef Queso Tacos), and I chose the steak fajitas for my main course. Churros and flan were provided for dessert. Food was delivered timely and at the right temperature. Everything tasted good to very good. Not sure what I would say was the best of the bunch. Pricing here is on the high side in my opinion. It is an upscale place and the decor is nice. Staff was efficient. Probably won't be back because of pricing.
Caló Kitchen + Tequila is my fun spot to enjoy my day off and get a nice lunch and cocktail. I tried the delicious Fajita and Avocado salad made with Ribeye Steak. Meat was cooked how I like it medium plus and was tender. Slight issue I have was $18 salad with an up-charge of $16. It's better to know ahead of time. JP was wonderful and sent a beautiful Tres Leches Cake to sort out the confusion. He's always friendly and trains his staff with precision. Sammy made a beautiful Mango Caliente Margarita drink and I enjoyed a shot of Casa Amigos Reposado with lime served neat. I can say it was relaxing to be there and enjoy the beautiful architectural elements of the bar and restaurant. My hope is the owners will add a little live entertainment to pick up the vibe and create some excitement, and renew the buzz.
Located on the exterior of South Coast Plaza is a lively, high end restaurant specializing in Mexican cuisine. There are plenty of seating options including inside, outside patio, bar, or even private rooms. Full bar service. Lovely ambience and very attentive service. The menu is extensive in variety and price (on the higher price side). We had the fajita avocado salad with added chicken ($26) and it was colorful in presentation, full portion size, with fresh chicken and a sweet, light apple dressing that brightened your palate. 10/10. We also ordered the filet mignon medium rare and it was tender and moist with excellent juices flowing in every bite. A great experience for a relaxing evening.
Calo Kitchen has an awesome lunch vibe: the decor is beautiful, modern, and inviting. Unfortunately, our first impression with the welcome staff almost had us leaving before we ever got to experience it. Two staff members were helping one person with a gift card, which is fine, but neither acknowledged my wife and me when we walked in. A simple "We'll be right with you" would have made all the difference. A little more training on that first point of contact would go a long way. Thankfully, Mina changed everything. She has to be one of the best servers I've encountered. Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, helpful, and her recommendations were spot-on. Mina just gets it--not because it's her job, but because she genuinely understands people. That kind of hospitality is hard to teach. The drinks were also on point. The bartender knew exactly how much spirit to put in the cocktails--you know what I mean. The food was delicious. We had the halibut tacos and short rib enchilada, and both were excellent. A great fusion of modern preparation with traditional flavors. No deduction in stars for the poor first impression because Mina was THAT good. We again experienced delicious food and drinks along with great customer service. Had the shrimp taquitos and quesadillas. So good. We also had the caddy margarita, the pricey martini with 1942, Tito's and micheladas. We spent a lot of money but it's worth it for the quality and level of service. The setting is peaceful and beautiful with low lighting and comfy booths. The negative - the women's bathroom. How disgusting. Calo, do better to have staff check the stalls. This was unacceptable as a patron spending time and money here. Don't get me wrong - the gross woman that left this mess is the main culprit but Calo needs to rectify the situation.
We stopped at Calo Kitchen & Tequila one evening with my family on our way to Mexico, and WOW! From the moment we walked in, we were impressed. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, the decor is gorgeous, and the atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting. Add in amazing food, great drinks and some of the kindest, most attentive service we had on our trip, and this place was a winner! Of course, we started with drinks and appetizers. I ordered the Spicy Margarita made with serrano chiles and blanco tequila, and it was DELICIOUS! It actually had a nice spice to it, which I love. my husband probably had an old-fashioned. But the best part had to be the TEQUILA CART! They bring the cart right to your table with different tequilas to choose from and some of the most unique salt rims I've ever seen. Such a fun experience! We ended up trying a couple of shots as well because...when in LA! My daughter wanted the guacamole to start, and it was fresh, chunky and packed with avocado, lime, cilantro, onion, tomato and serrano. She also wanted the chicken taquitos topped with salsa and guacamole. Both were really good and disappeared pretty quickly! For dinner, my daughter ordered the chicken fajitas. The pieces of chicken pieces were HUGE, which she loved, and everything was seasoned really well. My husband ordered the tacos and absolutely loved them. At this point we were already saying, "Why don't we have a place like this back home?" Seriously, if we did, we'd probably be there all the time. I ordered the Calo Combination with a chicken enchilada, chicken taco asado and carnitas chile relleno. This was the perfect choice for me because I got to try a little bit of everything. Everything was seasoned and sautéed really well and had just the right amount of spice. Soooo good! And obviously we couldn't leave without dessert! We ordered the churros AND fried ice cream because apparently making decisions wasn't happening that night. I LOVE a good warm, fresh churro, and these did not disappoint. Such a good way to finish an already amazing meal. The service deserves its own mention too. Everyone was incredibly friendly and attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the entire meal. Even though the food was outstanding, the service really helped make the whole experience. Hands down some of the BEST Mexican food we've had in LA. From the appetizers and drinks to our entrees and desserts, everything we tried was delicious. Beautiful atmosphere, fantastic service, great drinks and AMAZING Mexican food. First time here and the vibe was everything from the moment we walked in! Such a great spot for date night or GNO. Our table tried 3 different margaritas and every single one was so good! We also ordered the steak fajitas, sea bass, and tacos. Everything was on point. The staff was super nice and accommodating, even though a few people in our party were getting a little hangry. Great food, great drinks, great vibe. Definitely coming back!
We had a wonderful visit to Caló. It was our first visit. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated. We met our server Alejandro who was pleasant and informative as we questioned him about the menu. He provided us EXCELLENT service. It was a warm evening, but once the sun went down they raised the blinder creating a nice breeze. Loved the ambiance. The food was great. Loved the chips and salsa and Alejandro continued bringing us more. Our entrees were delicious, just a little too spicy for my tastes. But I know we will visit again.
Modern, trendy Mexican restaurant when celebrating a nice occasion! Food for everyone !! ====== Service was pretty good for the most part. We got checked up on a lot, but then it kinda dwindled a bit toward the end which was odd. Had to gio and find the server. Food portion here is generous, most plates are shareable. Ahi ceviche 4/5 Lots of ahi and mango, I liked the freshness of the fish and the sweetness from the mango. Wish it was cut a little chunkier tho! Could do with less chipotle mayo on the chips Free chips and salsa 4/5 Seasoned black beans are yummy, the red salsa they have is good but not amazing Kids bean and cheese burrito 3.5/5 Good but not amazing. Pinto beans are creamy and the red seasoned rice is tastier than their corn white rice. Two burritos are half palm sized, perfect for little hands. Queso fundido 5/5 Great balance on this dish. Came with some pork as protein and charred veggies, and a sublime salsa. The flour tortillas have a nice chew that went super well with the smooth cheese and spicy salsa. Halibut tacos 4/5 Not the largest tacos, maybe 3 bites for each taco, but the flavor was yummy with the seasoning they used on the fish. Comes with beans and rice. Margarita 4/5 Was strong and large! Outside seating was quite warm, but the bar area was much cooler weather wise. Def need to try their burrito!
So so good! This is my new favorite Mexican restaurant! Not only was the food fresh, unique and fantastic, but the service was above and beyond any dining experience I have had lately. During our visit, our party of 6 was seated promptly and the service was very attentive the entire time. Meanwhile, the place was packed!!! I mean no empty tables kinda packed. Food was delivered hot and fresh, bursting with flavor. Truly one of the best dine-in experiences. And...one of the most affordable, bang-for-you-buck, elevated dining experiences I've had locally in a long time. Look forward to visiting again soon.
IMO, elevated Mexican isn't easy to do. Authentic Mexican is SO flavorful, SO delicious and then you try to make that fancier and Americanize it and that's no easy feat. TL;DR you're not coming for the best Mexican as the food is just fine, but the ambiance is moody and romantic and the service is great. (Oh but you're paying for all that.) Came for a group dinner and although it's in a mall, you won't feel that way when you walk in as they manage to block the outside surroundings pretty well. The dark lit restaurant is romantic but not overly stuffy and the outdoor/indoor design keeps the mood light, almost like you're on vacation. It's a tequila bar and they don't really have a full bar so I hope you like tequila or mescal. If you do, they have great drinks although do you have to put tajin on everything? The food is where things start to fall apart. Like unsalted guac, unbalanced and overly sweet ahi tartare. They spent a lot of time on presentation and not enough time on truly balancing the flavors. The queso was the most flavorful with the pork and plenty of tangy and rich flavors but otherwise most everything else was forgettable. You can tell a lot about a Mexican restaurant by the chips and these chips were crunchy but SO bland. The beef birria tacos were pretty good but hard to mess up a fried taco with consomme. The main courses were again fine. Beautifully plated but flavor was just so so. While there was decent flavor on my halibut tacos, the fish itself had little flavor. The steak was cooked well. A little chewy but again not a lot of flavor overall. We got one of every dessert. Again all fine not great. The flan was by far the best, so recommend that if you like the flan. The service was the best part. Really attentive, customer service oriented, friendly. Again this is a great spot for a date or a special evening if you aren't that focused on food. But for the price, you want the food to be just as good as everything else here.
Great customer service! The drinks were amazing! Not one bad drink! The food however, was ok. Maybe because it wasn't as authentic as I'm used to. Yet it wasn't bad at all. Such a lovely layout.

The ambience in the restaurant and the decor is nice; BUT! Restrooms for the ladies were terrible. 3 of the toilets were un flushed, the counter was all soapy and wet, and the trash was overflowing! The food was not worth the price either! We ordered some appetizers, mex style quesadillas, and guacamole; they definitely use seed oils in their food! The quality of the food wasn't what we were expecting. The Chicken salad was disgusting... soggy and with 3-4 dry chicken pieces. I've had better street food! Over priced. Will never come back to this place. read more

I've here only two times but both times have been great. Today's dinner was a great second experience and I was throughly pleased with the service from our server, Sam and the general manager, JP. The food is always so good. I ordered the carne asada Steak, medium rare. My coworker and I shared the seafood trio and everything is so fresh and delicious. We also had the shrimp ceviche for our appetizer and it was amazing! No fishy smell and super flavorful. The fried ice cream was my favorite for dessert but we also enjoyed the tres leches and the flan. Overall, I highly recommend. read more

1st time here for our work holiday dinner. Overall 10/10! Food was delish and drinks were also great. We had SASHA as our server and she was very nice and had great recommendations when it came to what food to order. Will definitely be back for a date night with my wife in the future read more

We had such an amazing experience at Caló! The food was incredible, but what really made the night was our waiter, Kristian. He was so attentive, friendly, and on top of everything all night. He even went out of his way to get me a dish that's no longer on the menu the tapiquena and it was phenomenal. Truly so flavorful and perfectly made. And the flan... best I've ever had. What a great addition to South Coast Plaza!! Beautifully decorated with delicious cocktails and elevated Mexican food with all the authentic flavors. I started with La Sandia which was very refreshing and perfect for a hot day, for appetizers we went with Shrimp Ceviche, Beef Queso Tacos, and Taquitos en Tres Salsas. The Taquitos were my favorite with the three different sauces. My main entree was the Clemente's Enchiladas, the sweet and spicy guava sauce was flavourful and complimented the shrimp and lobster. Our server Ana was friendly and knew the menu very well, I had plenty of questions and she was able to answer them in depth and gave me great recommendations. We ended the night with the Tres Leches and Flan and I had a Don Fulano Reposado to wash it all down, it paired perfectly with the desserts. Caló Kitchen + Tequila is one of my top 3 places to go for Mexican food in OC. It's located just inside the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. It's a very chic and elegant looking restaurant with their massive bar as their main focal point. Perfect spot to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or have a business lunch. I seen business men and women dine here, and close in on some deals at this restaurant. The food here is exquisite! Very delicious and full of flavor. Their enchilada verde is probably the one I would recommend ordering. I don't think I've ever tried an enchilada like this anywhere else. The verde sauce is buttery but with a little tartness to it from the lime and the tomatillos. You can smell the fresh herbs in that sauce as well. You won't regret ordering it. The service was okay. We had a wonderful waitress and she was very attentive and friendly. The reason why I said the service was "okay" is because there was a misunderstanding when taking orders and I wasn't able to get my food on time. The crew was very apologetic and offered me a salad to compensate for the mistake while they were making my meal. It was very kind of them to do that, especially when my party had their meals in front of them and I was still waiting on mines. It's an upscale restaurant, so expect prices to be on the moderate to expensive side. I look forward to returning and ordering some of their signature drinks. read more

I think everything was 5/5 except the food. Not that the food was bad. It absolutely was not. But when I consider other restaurants with similar price points and cuisine, such as Javier's, the only differentiating factor besides location is the food. I think I expected the food to be a bit more memorable. My favorite dish was actually the dessert. The tres leches cake was amazing. Our servers were also great. Even though the location is at South Coast, you do not have to go into the mall to find it, you can access the restaurant from the outside. Overall, I'm glad to have tried it. read more

This location is much bigger and nicer than the El Segundo location. The food is just as good and the service is just as great. Chips, salsa and black bean dip are always delish. I got my refreshing pineapple margarita without the jalapeño. The birria tacos appetizer is so good! Can't go wrong the shrimp garlic plate. Churros are good but the fried ice cream is my fave. Came here with my fiancé the day after valentines day and it was amazing. It was only an hour wait which wasn't too bad for it bring valentines day weekend. They serve you unlimited chips beans and salsa which were so good. We ordered the shrimp taquitos appetizer and those were a 10/10! We also ordered the seafood trio and the shrimp and lobster enchiladas which were so good as well. Service was amazing and our server was very friendly and nice. She was so kind, genuine, and truly made my birthday dinner special before our show at Segerstrom. Her food and drink recs were spot on, and she even surprised me with a handmade birthday card. Such a great experience at Caló Kitchen + TeQuila. The ambience felt authentic and welcoming from the moment I walked in. BRIDGET greeted me with the warmest smile and SASHA helped me choose the perfect meal for my hunger level. The Blackberry Margarita and Chicken Quesadilla were delicious. HIBA brought out the chips, salsa, and beans and before serving, she kindly asked if I had any allergies. That level of attentiveness and care really stood out to me. THERESIA made sure my water and refills were always taken care of. I also had a chance to compliment GM Juan Pablo on his amazing team. I have gone twice before shows at the Segerstrom Theatre. Reservation is recommended but we were able to squeeze in at the bar one time and had great service by the bartender. Service is always fun and professional, and we got to our plays in plenty of time. Just a short walk over the bridge. Their Cadillac Margaritas are the best in town and reasonably priced. They serve chips, salsa, and frijoles negros. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. Had the filet mignon with an enchilada and taquito. read more

Stopped in and had a very nice lunch on a Thursday afternoon. We were seated quickly without a reservation. The bean sip, salsa, and chips that were brought out were very good. We ordered the shrimp taquito appetizer to start. I really enjoyed both the flavor and texture, and the sweet shrimp balanced well with the zingy dipping sauce. My husband really enjoyed the carnitas he chose as an entree. They were substantial, and they had that crispy outer layer carnitas are known for. My ribeye tacos were good, but very hard to eat as a DiY taco. I ended up just using knife and fork. The flavor was good, but the mushrooms stood out more than the ribeye or smoked cheese. Probably not something I would choose on a second visit. Service was very good, the decor is very cool, and the place got a little loud during our midday visit, so I imagine it's really festive in the evening when the large bar gets going. read more

It was our first time dining here, and we came as a family. I ordered the Casita Salad with salmon, and it was absolutely delicious. The avocado was initially unripe and too firm, but our server quickly replaced it with a perfectly ripe slice; great service and no complaints there. The drinks were also a highlight. The wine was enjoyable, and the spicy margarita, made with muddled jalapeño, was especially addictive with just the right amount of heat and flavor. My husband ordered the steak fajitas, which were cooked to a perfect medium rare. He was completely satisfied (and stuffed) by the end of the meal. The atmosphere was modern and upscale, which we loved. The only downside was the noise level ... several large, loud parties nearby made it difficult to hold a conversation at times. I came to Calo Kitchen & Tequila for lunch with friends. The atmosphere is beautifully modern with an American-Mexican flair. The service was on point, which is one thing I look for when dining out. We ordered chips and salsa to start with--they also had GF chips since there homemade chips are made in the same frier as other gluten items. For lunch one friend ordered the Shrimp Taquitos: cream cheese, epazote, satsa quemada, cheese, pico, lettuce, cabbage, aloli--which he really enjoyed. Another friend had the Ahi Ceviche: #1 sushi grade ahi, mango, avocado, serrano, cilantro, onion, lime, corn chips--which she really enjoyed. Another friend and I shared Halibut Tacos (GF): pan seared halibut with pico, lettuce, avocado, baja cream (we had on the side), veracruz white rice, and black beans--unfortunately the fish was extremely dry, and not as flavorful as we anticipated. As far as Margarita's, the spicy Marg was tasty, however, the skinny marg was much sweeter then I prefer. The menu offered other options that sound delicious--I look forward to coming back and trying something different. read more
This is an amazing addition to South Coast Plaza, and Calo is located right across from Corner Bakery. My rating would be more of a 4.5 but Yelp doesn't allow for half star ratings, so rounding up for their service. I definitely make reservations if you want to dine here, the very first time I tried to walk in on a Saturday evening the wait was 3 hours! Luckily the bar is open seating so got super lucky and was able to sit down immediately, but it's best not to leave it up to chance. Right off the bat, this place has gorgeous layout, ambiance, and decoration. It's extremely modern with a Tulum aesthetic. The most surprising thing for me was how good the drinks were here. My favorite is definitely the michelada and the paloma, surprisingly really authentic flavors and for the price really affordable given it's in South Coast. The appetizers here are also really solid, I've had several on the menu and never had a bad experience. I love the chip, beans, and salsa they give when you sit down. This might sound silly, but this place has non-chipotle table salsa and it was so refreshing to not get a chipotle salsa for once. I remember growing up table salsa being a lot more common, but it sure does feel like a scarcity these days. Service here is surprisingly really good. It's not going to be on par with like a Michelin star meal or anything, but the staff is on it. Waters are always refilled, tables are always cleaned, etc. The staff here is operating at an extremely high caliber, and I respect the attention to detail. The one downside of this place in my opinion is that all the entrees are too expensive, and are all decent but not amazing. If you're coming here, definitely recommend just getting drinks and appetizers. This place is perfect for a work happy hour, or a small kick back / gathering with friends. If I had to sum up Calo in one sentence - it's like Javiers but if Javiers actually had good food, great drinks, and amazing service. read more

Came here with a friend for lunch Sunday at noon and there was already a 30 minute wait so we decide to eat at bar. I had the Seafood Trio and my friend had the Rib-Eye tacos. Both entrees were really good. For drinks, I had the Strawberry/Jalapeno margarita and it and it was an excellent drink...had 2. I probably would have drank another one if I wasn't driving. The service at the bar was excellent, the bartenders helped each other out. The ambiance of the place is really nice and classy. Now I want to compare this to Javier's. The place is so eerie similar to Javier's. The menu (a few different items) and the taste is so spot on. The vibe is excellent and the service is outstanding. If there is one thing that Javier's do better is the salsa. The salsa for the chips at Javier's is still the best. It has more kick to it than the one served here. The salsa here is a little too mild for me. But I definitely recommend this place. read more
My work came here for a lunch outing, and the service was amazing. Our waiter's name was Jonathan, and we can't thank him enough! All the plates that we ordered were large portions and delicious! I recommend all of their desserts, especially the churros + ice cream :) there was a lot of thought and detail behind the atmosphere, and you can feel it once you walk in.
