I got curious to try this bar since I always see a line outside, so I was like let's see the hype. I guess it being extremely small inside explains the line haha it is very cramped in there. It was still very easy to order at the bar, loved the unique cocktail menu, the drinks were yummy! Cowboys and Poodles was our first stop on a bar hopping Wednesday night. We were wondering why the front door wouldn't budge when a wooden panel at eye-level suddenly slid open with a bang! The bouncer checked our ID's and let us inside. "Oh, it's a speakeasy," we chatted among ourselves. I thought it was just gonna be a regular bar. I also thought that speakeasies were supposed to be hidden. The inside of the speakeasy was very Western themed and decorated. The bar was placed right in the center of the room, covered by what seemed to be the hood of a covered wagon. To the left, an old-timey carriage. To the left, a confession booth bathed in sinful red light. You can sit in either of these props, or saddle up on a horse's behind next to the bar.  On this particular Wednesday night, there was a very nice man offering free spirit samples in the back corner of the bar. His name was Michael, and let us try several of the spirits from his brand, Tin City Distillery. I really liked the Fig Brandy and Chocolate Vodka, which he said won double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The bartenders were very nice and efficient. I had the Cowboy Blues, which was a Paper Plane inspired cocktail with blueberry. The drink was well rounded, having the depth from the bourbon, but still light and refreshing from the blueberry and lemon. My favorite drink of the night, however, was the Sundance Kid, which was very light and easy to drink.  I had a great time at Cowboys and Poodles, but a minor incident with other guests did affect my night when I went to use the restroom. The restrooms are gender-neutral and single-occupancy. When I tried the door, it was locked, so I stepped aside and waited. A moment later, a woman briefly opened the door, saw me, glared, and shut it again. "Odd," I thought as I continued to wait. My friend later walked over to ask if it was still occupied. When he gently checked the handle -- which was still locked -- the same woman opened the door again, glared at us, and said, "Can you guys chill? There are women in here," before leaving with her friend. It became clear that two people had been using the single-use restroom together for quite some time.I don't believe the restroom was being used for its intended purpose, and in a bar where many guests will naturally need to use the facilities, long waits caused by misuse can be frustrating. I also felt unfairly antagonized despite behaving exactly as any waiting guest would. While I understand the bar cannot control every guest's behavior, this experience did highlight how easily the restrooms can become bottlenecked -- especially since there is no indicator on the doors showing when they are occupied. It may be helpful for the business to keep an eye on restroom usage, or consider adding an occupied/vacant indicator, to ensure all guests can access the facilities at a reasonable pace. For context, the second restroom was also in use, though by a single person who did not react negatively when someone checked the handle -- which is understandable given that there is no way to tell from the outside whether the restroom is occupied. Overall, I had a great time at Cowboys and Poodles. I really liked the free spirit sampling. I thought the decor was really cool. And I thought the drinks were yummy. I hope to have a better experience on my next visit. read more

Cowboys and Poodles is a Speakeasy that's western themed. The themed exterior with ambiguous information immediately peaked my attention. There is a QR code that gives more information about the place. It wasn't clear how to get in, so I used the door knocker. A staff member inside will open the window and ask for ID's (it's a 21+ type of place). Once verified, I got to step inside. Luckily, they were okay with me just checking the place out to feed my curiosity. The interior is smaller than I expected. It's heavily decorated to fit a pristine western look. There was even an entire carriage that serves as table seating. The walls are adorned with vintage art/images + cowboy imagery, and the inside was pretty dark in general. Overall, I think this is a unique speakeasy to check out and to hang out with friends in smaller parties. read more

Pretentious place with pretentious bartenders. came here awhile back and this female bartender from canada whose name started with a K or something had such a bad attitude with green tea shots. i get it it ain't something you get at a cocktail bar trying to be elevated but maybe don't talk smack about it in front of everyone. she probably got fired for all i know but since then we kept a distance. i'll never forget asking her "what would you prefer instead" and she's like "real spirits" and I'm like "ok" we get you're repping the hipster costa mesa vibes but usually they're not so overt with their pretentiousness. i bet she's got a crazy collection of wide brim hats and instagram stories she probably regrets but oh well. you'll probably have a better time at a chain like Capital Grille or something where there's actual S&P instead of overpriced drinks for an aight aesthetic read more

My friend and I wanted to go to a speakeasy for a fun Friday night out. We were looking for one that doesn't require reservation, since it was a spontaneous thing for us. When we first walked in, there was a strong smoky scent that caught us off guard, but I later realized it was from the sage they burn on top of some drinks. I personally didn't enjoy the burning sage; the smell wasn't for me, and since the space is small, it felt a bit overwhelming. I ordered the Beeting Heart, which was really good. It is really crowded and hard to get a beverage and there isn't table service. Our cocktails were decent but the draw is more the vibe and atmosphere of the bar. Hidden in an unassuming parking lot by the camp area in Costa Mesa is this fun little spot. I got the Pandamonium (DENIZEN 8Yr Rum, Avua PRATA, PANDAN, COCONUT, LIME) and the Sweetheart of the Rodeo (UNCLE VAL'S GIN, STRAWBERRY, THYME, RABARABARO, LEMON). Both are delicious but the first really stood out to me! If you want the coolest seats like the carriage or the confessional, get there early. Otherwise any seat at this saloon is worth its weight in gold. There are so many fun little seats you can choose from inside which really adds to the ambience depending on which you one you choose. We ended up at the bar and didn't mind at all. Our bartender Mo was friendly, helpful, and quick. I know a lot of people give themed places like this a hard time because of service but I'm happy to report they don't slack off around these parts. Overall, would definitely return! read more

Cowboys and poodles is a super fun themed bar because the decor combines the two concepts so well. Visited on a Wednesday night and it was PACKED. Pretty much felt like a can of sardines mostly because the space is very small. There were virtually no seats available so people do get pushy when a party leaves to try and snag a spot. They also had live music performing country classics which was nice for the vibes but not so nice for the conversations. My group and I definitely had to yell to talk to each other. Ordering was pretty difficult because they have seating all around the bar which makes it hard to pop in and place an order. It took us around 30 minutes to even get to the bar to place our orders. The drinks were just okay. They had a good balance between alcohol and other ingredients but nothing impressed me and the drink wasn't crazy tasty. They have 2 bathrooms and I was actually very surprised at how clean they were. Parking was easy when we came at 10pm but I've been to the brewery next door at 6pm and it was virtually impossible to find a parking space in the small lot. Overall I think Cowboys and Poodles is great to experience once because of the theme and decor. But I probably wouldn't come back because it was more work for what it was worth. read more

From the heavy door with the brass knocker, to the antechamber, to the bar interior itself, C&P showcases a camp and kitschy version of the wild west. Wonderful touches that bring the space alive include a functional disco ball and live DJ on the nights I visited. There are small poodle details scattered everywhere which is a very cute motif. Even the bathroom is cute? One downside is how small the space is but I guess that's meant to be part of the speakeasy charm. The cocktails are on the expensive side but taste great and look interesting! My favorites so far include Cowboy Blues and the High Plain Drifter. The High Plain Drifter boasts of "salted apple" which had me intrigued and definitely delivered in a crisp, juicy, not-too-sweet yet refreshing cocktail.
