I've been to Calo a couple of times now since they've opened, and I have to say I have not been disappointed! So far, I love everything about this place! The vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant are very cool. Has an upscale feel for sure. The customer service has been great so far the times I've been. Amber at the bar was super friendly and hospitable and very knowledgeable on the menu. The food that I've tried has been great! They always bring you chips, salsa and refried black beans when you get sat, and those are great little starters. The Mexico City style quesadillas are very cheesy and taste great. The 2 dishes that are my favorite so far are the beef queso tacos and the short ribs enchiladas! The birria on the tacos is soooo good and tacos are crispy! The sauce on the enchiladas was delicious! The fried ice cream is out of this world! The coating for the ice cream is made from mixed nuts and granola, I believe. So good!! I have tasted a few of their margaritas so far, and I think my favorite is the grilled pineapple and chile margarita. Tastes very fresh, and they don't skimp on the tequila. The decor is a blend of Javier's and Habana at the Spectrum with less people watching. Their Cadillac margarita was really strong! Loved their chips with salsa and seasoned bean dip. I ordered the seafood trio which had a chile relleno, enchilada, and a taco with bacon & shrimp. I loved everything on that dish. The prices were about 20% less than Javier's. This was my second time dining at the new location in Costa Mesa. We were excited to return because the food and drinks are amazing. It's right at the mall in south coast plaza, which is beautiful this time of year! The new location is so nice. They really made it into a fun place with the huge fires throughout the patio and large indoor bar. Unfortunately, we waited over 30 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. It was a busy Friday night, but it did make waiting for our table in the crowded space super awkward for me and my guests. They didn't ever offer to take my number and call when the table was ready, which forced us to wait in the loud lobby. We stood at the bar to grab a drink while we waited, and we barely got a drink before sitting. Annoyingly enough, the bar forced us to pay for the drink rather than transferring the tab to the table, so we were anxious to sit but had to wait to close the tab. All of these little inconveniences added up. Once seated, the server seemed nice and the food was pretty consistent with what I expected even with how busy the kitchen must have been. It also didn't take too long to get food, which was great considering how long we already waited and by this time it was close to 9pm. Stars are based on this overall experience. Had I rated my first visit, I would have put 5*s. I'm interested to try it again to see if they can work out these kinks. read more

Went here for lunch on a Sunday. Not too crowded when we arrived. Since I have two little kids, they basically gave us a private room which I appreciated since they can be somewhat feral. Mark was our waiter and he went above and beyond for me and my kids. I know it can be really difficult to dine with small children since it can get messy and loud. Mark made sure we were good, checked up on us quite a few times always came back in a timely manner with any items we requested (napkins, forks, extra plates, etc.). They offer a kids menu that's not listed on the regular menu which was reasonably priced and well portioned. I ordered the shrimp and lobster enchiladas and they were great! Made a reservation same night and was able to get in and really liked the ambiance and very open and inviting. Mark was our server and he was very professional and attentive during the entire dinner. We had guacamole, chips and salsa and the beans and they were delicious. We ordered the chicken and cheese filled pepper and chicken and steak mix fajitas and they were also delicious! There were several servers including the manger walking around the tables and checked with everyone to ensure everything was okay and it was nice to see that they are working nicely as a team. This is a new spot that opened up in South Coast. The easiest way to find it is to go to the carousel and walk towards the exit where see's candies and Boudin is located at. The space is huge and stunning, I can definitely see it as a good date spot or a girls night out place. Starting off with the drinks, they were very pretty and strong, but nothing blew me away. The appetizers were too die for though, all of the taquitos were divine. Little crunchy pockets of flavor! The entrees were lack luster and definitely not worth the price tag. The chicken tacos were extremely dry and the beef quesadilla would've been flavorless if it didn't come with the sauce or guac on the side. Beautiful restaurant. When I walked into the restaurant, I was in awe. There was a magnificent fireplace. It was a fire built on top of this gigantic pottery. The dining area was indoors but felt like it could be transformed to an outdoor area. There were motorized blinds surrounding the outskirts of the dining room. Came in for the soft opening on Friday night. The ambiance of this restaurant space was outstanding. The dark furniture with white walls and bright lighting makes the space inviting and classy. The entrance is located at the best parking lot at south coast plaza just south of the walking bridge to the performing arts center. The service was attentive and prompt. Our server Mark did a great job suggesting items and asking about allergies and preferences. The water was constantly filled and empty plates were taken away immediately! Taquitos and quesadillas were our appetizers. The quesadillas are not like the ones you made late at night in college. These ones are puffy pillows of melty cheese served with salsa. Our entrees were short rib enchiladas, ribeye tacos, Chilean sea bass, and Clemente's enchiladas. I liked the rib eye tacos the best. It's deconstructed so you make them however you want to make them. Can with juicy rib eye with cheese and mushrooms! Great dish! Sea Bass dish had a HUGE piece of fish, which was excellent! Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Enchiladas were great. Clemente's enchiladas with the guava sauce was a bit on the sweet side so if you want to kick it up ask for a serving of habanero salsa. Desserts were fried ice cream and flan. The fried ice cream was a giant scoop of ice cream fried up. Could of fed a small starving country with it! Flan was great. I've dined here a few times at the bar and their margaritas are so delicious! I got the strawberry jalapeño marg and their blackberry one. You can tell they use fresh ingredients and not any artificial syrups. I like their wine list as well. They have my favorite Cabernet by the glass (Austin Hope). Chips and salsa/bean dip are one of the best I've ever had. Although last time I was there I didn't receive any chips even after ordering an entree. I had to flag down another bartender to get chips and water.... The short rib enchiladas are great. Can't think of anything bad about them! I've been here twice now and the first time we went was pretty great! Great service, amazing food and the ambiance definitely did not feel as if I were in a mall, or at least adjacent to one. It felt as if it was its own thing. However, the last time we went, it felt a little lackluster and I told my friends I brought that the service was really good and I looked like quite the fool when we never got refills on our drinks and the check took longer to get as we had to flag down someone else to get our check for us. However, the food both times were amazing and we all agreed that the food was the saving grace and the drinks were really good as well. Just would have been nice to have the same level of service we did receive the first time we went as well to give this a solid 5/5. The parking lot is plentiful as it's in a mall, just note that during busier times of the year during holiday season it can get quite busy.
