I put a bid out to 5 different tree trimming companies. As far as price goes, they're not the lowest cost option, but they're also not the highest. In terms of value, they came across as being the most professional. They opened up a view for us that's easily worth what we paid for the service. A tip if you work with Roman's: if you're like me and prefer to mark the trees you want to remove with ribbons/flags/paint, be sure to do that before the bid. During our initial walk through a few weeks before the job, I pointed at parts of the property and said "lets clear all the small stuff out and clean it up". The day before the crew showed up I walked around the property and marked "the small stuff" with ribbon so they could cut it down. My definition of "small stuff" was 4"-6" or smaller trees, which I based on my experience cutting trees in Indiana. Erick informed me in earnest towards the middle of the job that a 6-4" diameter tree is pretty big and what I was really asking for is to clear cut a few of the areas. Doh! it didn't help that I marked a few more to take down after they cleared away some of the brush on the first day. We walked around the property and prioritized the rest of the work. We were both a bit worried--he wanted to get his crew our of there in the four allotted days and have happy customer and I wanted to finish the work. How did it end? Fortunately for both of us the crew was able to finish in the allotted 4 days and the results look great. I posted my review in 3/2022 and somehow the company had it removed. This tree company cut my oak/redwood trees without my permission. They accessed them from the neighbors' property and took way too much down when the oak trees were NOT dormant. Two other companies had refused to cut them without my permission while it was hot, so the neighbor got Romans to do it. I came home to find their crew sitting on my property. I talked to Erik or somebody from Romans and he said he only cut a small amount but my tree trimmers came by and said it was more like 20 or 25% of my oak tree. Somehow this company has gotten 2 one star reviews removed from Yelp. How is this possible? read more

Excellent customer service and work. We have had Roman's Tree Care come to top the oak trees on the back hill of our rental house in Orinda at least 4 times over the past several years, for the view. They also removed a large dead oak on the same hill. They are very reasonable for the large jobs, especially because all the work has been on the steep hill with a narrow windy road below (typical Orinda road). We had Romans Tree Service crew this week trimming huge cedar and magnolia trees in front of our house. The crew were masked, courteous and worked diligently throughout the day asking us to check their progress and make sure we were happy with the results. We hired Roman's to thin and clean out our 7 massive redwoods. They were absolutely awesome! Covered our pool and other plants, even cleaned the pool with the pool sweep after. Our trees look absolutely beautiful and so much healthier. Roman's quote was very reasonable and quite competitive. Since they were referred, we chose them to do the work. We were not disappointed. They showed up on time and went about their work efficiently. The crew was conscientious of our property and took great care not to damage the surrounding landscaping. Erick was probably my 3rd or 4th contractor i had out to look at my situation. I had 2 trees that were hanging over a busy street, hanging over my house, and covered with ivy/misletoe. I also had about 100' of oleander that was overgrown and needed to be trimmed down. Without knowing much about trees its hard to know what needs to be done other than my trees look bad and i have bunch of branches hanging over a busy street which makes me nervous... the other guys who came over were asking me what I needed. Erick pretty much told me what I needed. Most importantly though, Erick noticed one major trunk branch that was hollowed out and deteriorated. This same trunk line was hanging over the street. After looking at it, it was pretty obvious and I don't know how the other guys didn't notice that so it really spoke to his thoroughness. After pointing out a few other items I needed, it was obvious Erick was the most knowledgeable and qualified person to work on my trees. Erick's crew came on 2 separate occasions and quickly finished the job. After each visit, you would never know they were even there because they cleaned up so well. I had a huge oak tree come down on my hillside and take out 4 other oaks at the same time. Having to clear 5 majestic trees was incredibly challenging and costly. Our insurance policy capped the cost at $590 per tree which didn't come close to covering this. I had 3 bids done and although one was a little cheaper, we went with Eric Roman because of his professionalism. They brought a crew of 7 guys who worked efficiently to get everything cut and moved off the hill without damaging any existing landscaping. Work involved removing logs and branches from previous tree removals in my downhill open space area - almost 2 days worth of work. Smart contractor - implemented a rope pulley system to drag the logs (some of which were very big) up the hill instead of alot of chainsawing and manual hauling. Crews were great. Owner of the company (Erick) and office manager (America) were courteous and professional. Smooth interactions with Erick and America which I appreciate. I've had dealings with another tree contractor in the Orinda/Moraga area and it was a nightmare dealing with that owner. Not so with Erick and America - thank you! I need to start by saying that I did not use Romans Tree Service, so my rating is based on why I didn't use them. My realtor recommended Romans Tree Service when I closed on a house. I wanted to address several large oaks on the property for fire safety, as they were encroaching on the house. I thought Romans was extremely professional and knowledgeable when they came to provide a quote. I would've moved forward with doing business with them, but decided it'd be prudent to obtain another quote. So, I called another local business (that is licensed with workers comp and had certified arborist who came out to assess the oaks and provide the bid). The bid came in at 1/4 of the proposed price of Romans, for the exact same work. And, this is without my telling this company that I had already obtained a bid (and as such I didn't disclose what Romans bid was for the work either). While I thought I was going to go with Romans, I'm glad I shopped as I saved a ton of money that I can use for other landscaping or even two plane tickets to Europe, etc!! read more

We needed to have 2 trees removed & stump grinded & major trimming on a Chinese Elm. Erick came out & gave us a verbal estimate which was reasonable & actually slightly lower than another company we had come out. When we decided to go with them I called them to see if they had a copy of that estimate since they did not send us anything via email. America said she would check & call me back. This was Thurs & today is now Mon & nothing. I even called today & got her VM. I'm sorry but my biggest peeve is not returning call when promised. It's as if tehy did not want my business & what a disppointment based on these great Yelp reviews. I give my highest recommendation to Romans Tree Service. I contacted and compared 4 tree service companies with top ratings on Bay Area Checkbook and Romans was the best in terms of attention to detail and price. Other companies either did not know about, or wanted to avoid having to get, an Oakland traffic obstruction permit for the work. Romans employee America called Oakland Public Works repeatedly and went down personally to Oakland Public Works to get the permit at a time when Public Works computer had been hacked and the office was often closed and permit processing was stalled. When Erick Roman initially visited my site, he developed a plan, and presented a bid that was thousands of dollars less than other companies. After I accepted the bid, Erick promptly scheduled the work, and answered the neighbor's questions about the project so things would go smoothly. The other companies were not only significantly more expensive but none of them were interested in obtaining or even helping me obtain the necessary traffic obstruction permit or in developing a good plan to do the work with minimal traffic interference. I live in the Oakland Hills on a narrow winding street and it was a big job (removing two 50-yr old Monterey Pines on a steep hillside away from the street when it was raining heavily at times). Everything was cleaned up afterwards. It was an outstanding job and cheaper than any other company I contacted -- like $3-5,000 cheaper depending on who the other company was. My wife and I moved into our new house several months ago and included with the house was a very large yard and many mature trees. It was that time of the year to have the trees trimmed so we checked out Yelp and there were 3 Tree trimming companies that stood out from all others. After getting estimates from all three companies we decided on Romans. Well this past Friday they arrived at our house at that the scheduled time and Eric Roman (who gave us the estimate) also came out to lay out the work for the crews. We appreciate Professionalism and it is obviously important with Erick Roman and his team. Erick was on time for the estimate appointment and gave us better pricing than two of their leading competitors. We wanted to keep the mulch, so that helped with the pricing. It took a couple of phone calls to get the appointment but America (the woman who does the scheduling) got us IN! Erick made us feel comfortable during the estimate and on the day of the job, as he is friendly, funny and most importantly professional. He supervised the workers during the whole 4-5 hours! All the guys were friendly, professional and work efficiently. We had (5) trees cut: Chinese Tallow 80ft stump removed; trimmed Redwood; cut down another redwood, cut down Black Walnut, trimmed branch of old Oak tree. All items done to perfection! No issues whatsoever! Everything went way above our expectations! The team cleaned up nicely. We have a pond and they even skimmed out the pond, which surprisingly, they didn't get much in it! He was very kind and made some excellent suggestions when I asked about future projects in our yard. He was also a good listener! The men came yesterday (on time) and worked very hard all day. We used Roman's Tree Service for a variety of cleanup in our yard, including removing one full grown oak, trimming the dead limbs out of almost every tree on our property and working on our neighbors property to remove some overgrowth obstructing our view and limbs overhanging our property.
