TLDR: I highly recommend this school for any dog, whatever the issues, rescued or not, large breed, or tiny breed (tbh I guess corgi's are trending or whatevaaaa, so I've seen so many crazy af corgi's LOL please let Calik9 train your dog). Random things to note: they offer a payment plan, would recommend doing an evaluation first, discounted pricing for current clients, they send you home w/ homework after each session in the beginning (if you don't do it, don't expect to improve!), and building is hard to find the first time (once you see the building, it's on the right side). Pricing may seem high, but if you really start looking around at cost of proper training and see how others charge even more, this place is really worth it (your petco/petsmart training is cheap for a reason). THE NITTY GRITTY: My dog: Rescued 5 month old Male, German shepherd / husky / Akita / malamute mix. Issues: mouthing, biting (causing bruises, occasionally breaking skin), lunging, defensive showing teeth a lot, didn't like to be pet, especially did not like belly/face being touched, destructive (tore off 8 windows), refused to sleep indoors in a crate, when indoors always had to have leash on and someone watching / holding leash, leash pulling, biting the leash and wrapping it around his muzzle, "I'm in charge" attitude, possessive, food guarding, territorial, etc. At this time, Zak George was popular so we diligently went through his online program w/ zero improvement. I started looking into different schools and after having consultations w/ a few, I picked Calik9 and met Jas. I went in with intentions to do one of the longer, in depth, more expensive packages. He evaluated Mako and said he wasn't really aggressive and I remember thinking WHAT DO YOU MEAN!? LOL Because of that, he advised on a package that was shorter / less expensive, and explained that he believed that was what he needed and depending on how it goes, I could always add on as we go. I put my trust into what he said and went through w/ the course he recommended. The fact that he knew I was prepared to pay more, but actually recommended a cheaper course was the deal breaker that pushed me because it showed me he really was looking out for what was best for my dog, not just agreeing with what would make more money. Savy was the first trainer to break down those walls for Mako and I. We then trained w/ Taren and Aby, who pushed us even further. Now that we regularly do group classes, we've also been able to train w/ Jas a number of times and a couple times w/ Isaiah. Being able to train with a handful of the team was great because I saw first hand how they are on the same page in the sense that you won't have conflicting answers on how to do things because they stick to their system, so you're always in good hands. Extra shout outs to Aby for seriously giving us the most in depth answers and breaking things down for us so well, especially when we needed help muzzle training. Please note that if you want progress, you can't be afraid to show some tough love. I went in very open and willing, but I do see others afraid to discipline and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that by being firm when needed, at the level needed, and always being consistent, it will create a way to communicate with your dog. All of the serious issues started to improve after a few weeks and got even better over time. We've now been at Calik9 for a year. We're still learning every day and he isn't perfect, but we climbed mountains to get here and couldn't be happier. It really takes a village. read more

My dog Milo was a rambunctious Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy when I first started working with CaliK9 (right during the start of the pandemic too!). I thought he would never get better. Even the breeder said Rhodesians are notoriously hard to train and I could never fully trust him off leash. I signed up for the "advanced/supreme" training package and stuck with it. Fast forward about 8 months. Now, every time I take Milo to the park or for a walk, the comments I hear repeatedly are, "wow, your dog is amazing.", "Oh my gosh, he is so well trained. How did you do that?". I have probably referred 30 people to CaliK9 just from answering that question alone. Mind you, Milo is only 11 months old, so he's just getting started! And I have yet to come across any dog (outside of the Calik9 facility) that even comes close. Aby, the trainer I have worked with consistently since the start, takes credit for a large part of my success. He showed me how to properly use a training e-collar, to understand how the dog thinks and how to get him to be the best dog he can be. Kudos to him, he was born to train dogs. *Jas, he's a keeper!* I have worked with probably all the other trainers at CaliK9 and they are all terrific, but hats-off to Aby because he really took me to the next level. One little disclaimer to be mentioned: owner participation is not to be overlooked here. If you think you're going to sign up for a package and a perfectly trained dog will pop out the other end, keep dreaming. It's not just the classes you go to, it's what you do in between classes at home. I do at least 5-10 minutes of training with Milo every day 7 days a week and at every opportunity we are out and about. That adds up to a lot of time dedicated to training over time. You have to be firm and very consistent or your results will be sub-par. Our 4, now 6-month German Shepard is in the process of completing her Beginners classes alongside the amazing Rufus during 1:1 classes and Richard and Justin during group classes. We loved Rufus! I worked after office hours and we truly appreciate him fitting us in his last session every Wednesday. During 1:1 classes, he quickly gained the trust of our pup so quick so that she was heeling without the hold of the leash during the first class! Rufus never failed to cater the class to our pup's demeanor and was quick to offer us feedback about how we can continue to improve to train our pup during training and moving forward. During group class, you get to recall with your dog with plenty of dogs there as a distractor for your dog. My advice is if you can make it to the weekday classes to do so because the weekend classes get busy! The individuals at CaliK9 are so knowledgeable and are always welcoming in sharing information that would assist in the betterment of your training whether it be the use of prongs, e-collars or none at all. Their own dogs are also easily an example of their work. Always well poised and true examples of what trained dogs look like. CaliK9 offers their clients the appropriate techniques and tools that will train your dog, however you must be willing to work as hard as they are to train your little girl/guy day in and day out. We purchased the 12 sessions (4 zoom, 4 semi-privates, 4 groups) at the end of February and after completing the program, we purchased 5 refresher semi-privates in San Jose with Juan. That speaks to how much we enjoy the instructions and are seeing results. We rescued our 1-yr old male pitty mix in September 2023. He is leash reactive (anxious) and despite going through 2 other programs prior to Cali K9, we never really felt we had a good handle on how to redirect him. I even felt one of our past trainers was afraid of our dog so that didn't instill trust that she could train him. We are definitely seeing results after our 12 sessions and are amazed at what he can do in sessions, especially the group sessions where there are other dog/people distractions going on! The commands are straight forward and consistent (something we were lacking) and technique is key. Our other dog, a female 7 y.o shepherd mix, has improved in her responses too so that's all good! Juan is patient with the dogs (and parents!) and confident with all dogs so thus, we are becoming more confident. We actually look forward to training! We put our dog in the 2 week board and train. Mike her trainer was amazing! He took such good care of our dog Ruby! We picked her up today and she is so much calmer and well mannered. Before training with Mike we would have to walk her on long walks and she would still have energy. But I realized she needs more mental stimulation. The training mentally tires her out and she is so much calmer. She no longer jumps, stays in place, heels, lays down, and is more confident! Cali K9 set a foundation that I can use to continue training my dog, Captain. I sent Captain to the 4 week board and train and he returned a more disciplined and a better friend. Within a mere few weeks they slapped an e-collar on our dog and when the trainer was handling our dog he shocked the hell out of our dog so badly the dog screamed and went up the leash and nearly bit the guy. They have no idea what they are doing there, no trainer there has formal animal behavior education or formal dog training education. Stay away. We are really loving our experience with Cali K9! We rescued our American Pit Bull Terrier, Leela as a puppy. We fell so in love with this breed and want to ensure she is trained well enough to take anywhere and everywhere! She is a bit reactive to other dogs so we felt it urgent to get her the best program! Cali K9 has been amazing for us. The Zooms with Isaiah are so fun and helpful (a mini workout for both of us!) It's great because you start with some beginner Zooms and then when you go in person for semi privates you have some of the lingo down. The semi privates and group classes with Juan are so effective and fun! Juan really knows what he's doing and how to read dogs. Once you attend the in person sessions it makes the Zooms even more effective. The group training is where it really all comes together. Leela is doing so great! It just takes consistency as owners to practice the drills for 15 min a day. They teach you how to incorporate the training in everyday activities like feeding time, watching tv, walks, socialization, etc. So you can constantly be training. His show was also canceled as he stated to me and In a direct message. I reached out to him because my dog was in trouble with animal control and was about to be euthanized. Nothing was done, my dog ended up getting euthanized and my heart is broken even up until now. He died July 16, 2021 and he took a piece of my heart with him I had him ever since he was a baby. Dropped our four month old pup off a few days ago for a two week board & train session. We were greeted by Isaiah and he seemed like he really knew what he was doing. We ran into a bit of a scheduling issue at first but the team at CaliK9 corrected the issue right away. Our pup ended up getting a really bad ear infection and they were also able to reschedule our drop off date for the second time. This is our pup's first time being away from home, so I was really worried. But I have no doubt that he is in good hands. Cali K9 is the best! I bought the off leash package for my high energy, happy go lucky puppy that needed desperate obedience. After 8 private/semi private lessons with Isaiah and several group classes with Aby and Taryn (we still have more to go), my crazy pup listens so much better and is more advanced than I thought she would be. Lucy is so much sweeter, less mouthy, walks properly on leash and listens to commands. Is she reliable off leash? Not yet, but she is getting there! Lucy is now 6 months old and is much closer to being off leash reliable than any puppy her age I know. My biggest recommendation to people interested in training here is DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Once or twice a week training is not enough to get your dog obedient. Your trainer will give you some homework on what to practice and reinforce at home between lessons - do them! The training will not work if you don't reinforce the same level of accountability at home. The trainers here are awesome! They listen and give honest feedback/suggestions based on where your dog is. I really don't write many or any reviews but when it's life changing it deserves my time and accolades for the success of this business. My dog would attack anyone that looked at him, including all animals. It was hard to socialize him because he would be a liability every time we were out with the family. My wife would have nothing to do with him because he's strong and just out of control. Basically we were thinking about giving him up if he didn't change. We found Calik9 on social media, so I looked into yelp. There were a lot of great comments along with being the best dog trainer in the Bay Area. We went and told Jas to take this dog for a month of board and train and he refused. He said you would be wasting your money because he's not acclimated to this new environment. Two weeks out of the month he would just get the dog comfortable in the new setting with really no training yet. This was really honest as he could've just taken the money because I had no questions in spending it. After 6 sessions my dog has completely done a 180! He has changed so much my wife cried of his improvement. Group classes were out of the question but he has passed with flying colors and keeps improving and moving to new advanced classes. I called to get information about their reactive board and train. The woman who called me was super short (unfriendly) and unhelpful. I asked to get information about their training approach and availability for their reactive dog board and train. Her response, "We don't have any availability until October and you would need to purchase a package first." Shame on me for wanting more information before spending thousands of dollars. Great experience with our 2 year old Havanese. Juan has been our primary trainer and he's been professional, personal, and knowledgeable. Our dog started the sessions very timid, but in time and patience of the training team he's mellowed out. Looking forward to our upcoming group sessions. read more

After spending $1100 I am not impressed with this place at all. We were told we'd have the same trainer every time in our zoom and are now on our third trainer that asks us what our issues with our dog is every time. Read the file! Do any of these people talk to each other? On top of that the place is in complete disarray due to a move we weren't told about and the dog is freaked out by it. The parking is full of dog poop. For being a dog training service you'd think they'd be aware of the diseases transferred by fecal matter. Avoid. read more
