Our trusty 2001 Toyota Highlander with 165k miles started consuming oil like crazy (1 quart every…read more100 miles!) on a cross-country road trip from Seattle to Charleston, SC. The Toyota dealer in Ogden charged us $125 for a cursory inspection that didn't even include compression test and insisted we needed a new engine. The great guys at European & Japanese Auto (Samuel and Melvin) performed a compression test (found no issues) and scoped the valves with a camera (mostly clean). The Toyota dealer wanted another $300 for those extra steps. These guys would not take payment for the diagnosis. Turns out the excessive oil consumption was caused by the poorly designed rear valve cover and PCV valve assembly, not a dying engine. Somehow the Toyota dealer forgot to mention this well-known issue with older Highlanders and Lexus vehicles. Samuel and Melvin installed an OEM redesigned rear valve cover and gasket (bought from the dealer), a new PCV valve and tubing and intake gasket. Charged half the amount that the dealer wanted for the work ($799 vs $1600). Three days and 500 miles later.... We checked out Provo, UT. Toured the Arches National Park. And now we're relaxing in sunny Santa Fe, NM. Checked our oil many times along the way. The oil level hasn't budged since we left the shop. Problem Solved! These guys are a rare combination of highly skilled automotive expertise, generosity, and honesty. If we lived in the Salt Lake City area they would definitely be our regular auto mechanics. 100% completely satisfied.

The sales process was very high pressure and difficult but we eventually came to an agreement and drove our vehicle home since we were stranded with our 3 young kids. Within a thousand miles we began having problems. We took it to our mechanic and they said it needed over 8 thousand dollars worth of repairs. The problems included things that the dealer definitely should have caught and were in fact dangerous. The tires were bad and coupling from 4 bad shocks and bad alignment.
