It was a literal shack with no seating but it had some interesting drink choices. I don't drink coffee so I'm glad there were other choices as well as some breakfast pastries. The lady was friendly and explained the menu. We got an iced Americano, iced matcha latte, and a green jasmine tea. The matcha had good flavor and the green jasmine tea was very fragrant. This is the only place I know of it San Diego that has white coffee/espresso! White espresso is made from beans with minimal roast and has a unique nutty slightly sweet flavor that is distctly different from regular roasted coffee. It's pretty uncommon to find around here. This little coffee stand was quick reasonably priced and the barista was friendly. Definitely go check it out! read more

My drink from this shop was amazing!! It was on their seasonal menu (banana latte with almond milk). I got it 50% sweet and hot, and I wasn't sure if warm banana latte wouldn't work, but the employee told me it would be good and it was! The weather was a bit chilly so I'm glad she convinced me. I'm happy I chose to go half on the sweetness because it was already fairly sweet the way I got it (but I still enjoyed it and it felt indulgent like a dessert). They were very helpful and answered all my questions! My husband also enjoyed his iced tea from here. I really appreciated that they don't overdo it on the ice for their iced drinks. This little truck/ stand coffee place is so cute. Inside the parking lot of a brewery/ sports bar. Service 5/5 Coffee -brown sugar iced latte 5/5 I got the iced white mocha with white espresso. My daughter got the brown sugar iced latte. The barista was so kind and helpful. Explained to me what white espresso tasted like. This was my first time trying white espresso. I'm not a fan at all. Nutty and super sweet. Not sure if it an acquired taste. However, my daughter's latte was delicious. Tasty, smooth, and not too sweet. A little bit of caffeine doesn't hurt anyone on a Sunday morning. We decided to stop by this coffee shop as we were near old town and we were pleasantly surprised with the options. The young lady was nice and her recommendations were good. We were lucky to go when the parking was open which is always a plus. If you are a ginger fan I recommend the ginger latte as it takes very similar to golden milk. If nearby we would definitely make a quick coffee stop here. read more

Cute coffee truck located in the parking lot of Home and Away. Open until 1 pm on weekends I enjoyed a crisp iced latte on a warm afternoon. The staff is very friendly and the prices are pretty good for a fresh made drink. The fall speciality flavors all looked good. They also sell a variety of baked goods. Such a cute coffee truck/stand! Came here on our way to Old Town one day after looking up nearby coffee options on Yelp. Honestly the coffee itself was fantastic but I really loved their variety of options and their creativity for different featured drinks each month and week. I really enjoyed their artwork/branding as well, just felt like home for San Diego. We were able to order quickly and only had to wait a few minutes for our drinks. The cashier/barista was really friendly and helped us decide on our drinks. Although this location was busy with a steady flow, our drinks really did not take that long. Fantastic service overall! I had one of their drinks of the month, the pistachio rose iced latte, and my husband had their drink of the week which was the blackberry mocha (iced). His drink choice was best overall as the sweetness of the blackberry complemented the mocha base perfectly. Not overly sweet, but just a nice flavor in addition to coffee. I enjoyed my pistachio rose latte, but it was very heavy on the rose and very light on the pistachio. Unfortunately couldn't taste pistachio at all, but the coffee itself was fantastic. I ordered the pumpkin cold brew here after grabbing my sandwich from Rubicon Deli. It's a small stand with really just grab and go option. At the time I was there, there always only one person taking orders, but they were moving relatively fast. This is a quick and easy stop for some coffee! read more

Once I got into my rental car at the airport I looked for coffee shops in the area. I normally prefer independent coffee shops to chains. California Bean popped up and I decided to try it. I am glad I tried this place and I only wish I could have their coffee everyday. The little shack is vibrant and the young lady was very pleasant and helpful. We aren't in the area very often, but when we are, we do like to stop at this place. It's a little shack in a parking lot outside of a sports bar, but they do have really good coffee. The attendant is always nice and helpful, and they have a punch card, so you get a free one every now and then. Can't really speak to the price, seems to be about average, but we always leave happy. read more

This was my first stop after the airport and it did not disappoint. The service was incredible and the drinks were delicious! A few of my friends recommended this spot and of course I had to try their white coffee. I've only had it once in Colorado so I didn't have high expectations. I ended up getting the white coffee with pistachio oat milk! It was very yummy, strong nutty flavor. A bit on the expensive side ($8) but this is supposedly the only place in California that sells white coffee and I got a milk alternative. The barista is so friendly she answered all my questions and gave me many recommendations on what to order. Would definitely return again to get a regular latte or cappuccino, not sure I can afford to spend $8 on white coffee every time :-) I also like to try their monthly specials to try different concoctions everytime. read more

The way I almost broke my thumb trying to hit 6 So I live next door and I refer California Bean as "My neighborhood Crack Shack" I've never had crack but I hear 1 is too many and 10000 is never enough!!! The ladies in this cute coffee shack that work here make my mornings. It is conveniently located near my office, and so, it's hard not to go here at least once or twice a week! Their prices are reasonable and it's a nice change from your usual Starbucks. California Bean also shares space with another new spot I just discovered called Home & Away (will be writing a separate review for them!). My morning coffee adventures have led me to trying just a few drinks, which are: 1. White Lightning 2. White Mocha 3. Lotta Horchata 4. Vanilla Latte My favorites thus far are the White Lightning and White Mocha! I 100% recommend stopping by here for your cup o' joe if you're in the area. I'll likely be trying new drinks, especially since they'll have fall season speciality drinks :) At this point, I'll probably need to buy an official California Bean shirt to pledge my allegiance to them, lol. read more

"Great service and Timing" I looked up a coffee spot in the area on Yelp and other than the main brand recommendations, this one arrived on the list and I'm glad I went. The set-up was like a little shack, don't know how to explain it but it's one of the buildings that you can't miss. The server (Krista) was speaking to two other customers before serving me and it was good to see that a conversation was being had around 630am when most folks tend to be grumpy (so I've been told). It was good to see she spoke with me the same way that she did the customers before me, which is always a thumbs-up. I informed her I'm normally a Chai guy and I would like to try their Cinnabon latte. She said good choice but if I haven't had white coffee before and like a bit more flavor try out the toasted turtle. She went into detail about what is in it and how it is made and she had me sold. We had a conversation the whole time while she was making it which I found to be pretty impressive. She wasn't rushing at all and she took her time while she was doing it. Even though I'm not a big fan of the taste of espresso, it didn't bother me when I drank this and that was a game changer for me. I ordered it large, hot, with oat milk and it was very delicious. Not every day someone can say they had white coffee, roasted marshmallow chai and they enjoyed it. I'm glad that Yelp, recommended this place to me because I will be coming back to possibly get the same thing once again. The coffee itself was good but I think the price was just a bit too high for me. I paid around $7.50 for a 12 ounce iced drink prior to tip. Not bad but it was cute it was a small shop and parking was minimal but it was also next to a street where you can just pull up and park. read more

The ice cream was smooth and flavorful, all the coconut and mango pieces were ripe and sweet, and the rice was cooked perfectly. Everything tasted fresh and like they really took care with each ingredient. Another plus was that they're both vegan items! I'd definitely recommend trying both of those desserts. I can't wait to be back!

What started as a micro-roaster, this chain has garnered a following near and far for their single origins, blends, and specialty drinks. As you arrive to this location, you'll find that there's limited parking relative to the size of this building. As you step foot into the shop, you'll understand why - most of their footprint is occupied by their roasting equipment but the dining space is still relatively large compared to more niche coffee shops. Situated with small tables as well as bench tops, during my weekend excursion, there was never a time that it was completely packed so you're bound to find a spot to camp. Outlets are also available from certain spots. Ordering is simple which can be done at the register or online. The menu is quite extensive with all things coffee but consider checking their online menus as I found items like their double cappuccino that wasn't advertised on their physical menus. If you do order through their mobile app, you'll automatically get reward points toward free drinks or food. As you step foot into the shop, you'll understand why - most of their footprint is occupied by their roasting equipment but the dining space is still relatively large compared to more niche coffee shops. Situated with small tables as well as bench tops, during my weekend excursion, there was never a time that it was completely packed so you're bound to find a spot to camp. Outlets are also available from certain spots. Ordering is simple which can be done at the register or online. The menu is quite extensive with all things coffee but consider checking their online menus as I found items like their double cappuccino that wasn't advertised on their physical menus. If you do order through their mobile app, you'll automatically get reward points toward free drinks or food. Speaking of special offers, they also offer birthday goodies so when it's that time of the year, you're in for a treat! I did end up getting the double cappuccino and it was delicious and came out hot with just enough foam to add volume to each sip. If I weren't traveling with so much stuff, I would have considered getting their bags of beans to brew at home. Fortunately, they do offer a subscription and delivery through their website so for those like me looking for a taste from afar, you're in luck! From dark to light roasts, you'll have quite a few options with the notes you desire. The staff were friendly and helpful despite constantly at full capacity. Drinks kept churning out with the same consistent quality and hospitality. Overall, Bird Rock is a local roaster you'll want to check out as their growing operations is a clear result of their consistent product quality, accessibility through its many locations and ordering methods, and excellent service. This location in particular is just blocks away from the huge playground and park next to mission bay, albeit you're better off driving. I was much too full to grab food this around but it may be worth a try to go with the coffee next time. I think, the term specialty coffee, got lost because I ordered their: $6.20, Iced Coconut Ube Latte. This is made with coconut milk, so it's natural to see some separation in the drink. But it wasn't good at all. The ube flavor was very much lost, it didn't resemble ube at all. And the espresso shots were watery, making the drink -- not worth the money. Of course, paying it myself, I drank it all. But I would NOT recommend this particular drink to anyone. Since it was under their specialty latte caption, it led me to believe this was a tried and true, 100% solid and perfected drink. I've had much better ube coconut lattes elsewhere. In addition, he added some desiccated coconut on top- which usually I don't mind, but this version was very tiny and had no flavor to it. It was a bit annoying to drink. If I were to ever order a drink with it, I would request it to be removed. Anyways, my friend ordered the Iced Strawberry Matcha which looked very promising. The matcha was well mixed, no clumps at all, and had a strong matcha color to it. My other friends ordered some bakery goods such as the empanadas which smelled incredible. I think, if I were to come back here I would order one of those instead! I can appreciate that a specialty drink was under $7, which is not the norm anymore when you come to coffee shops. They had plenty of indoor seating as well as some seats outside. I think they could even add some stools to the table against the back to invite more people to sit-- if they wanted to. Having another trash can near the back wall would be nice, especially on such a busy day as well. Overall, even though my drink wasn't very tasty-- I had a great time conversing with my friends here! Kenzi Coffee & Tea Garden does have a large menu of other latte options, so I would recommend to try something else out.
