We come to PB once a year around the holidays, and love trying new places. We are often looking for new places to grab a drink, or have coffee in the morning. We try to stay away from S-Bux in favor of trying and supporting the local spots! This is actually the second year in a row that we've come to Pump. We first discovered it last year during a combination of Yelp searches, and a little A-Frame sign they have along the boardwalk. The reviews were mostly all good, and we quickly understood why. LOCATION & INSIDE: Located in a little outdoor shopping center, the inside itself is pretty small. Amongst different areas, there is room for around a dozen or less people to sit inside. They have a little space against the wall across from the counter where they sell shirts and other items such as travel mugs, glass sippers, and mushroom coffee! There are a few additional tables out front, but I recommend taking your coffee down for a stroll along the beach if the weather permits. DRINKS: This is a pretty typical coffee shop in terms of offerings, with options including regular coffee, cold brew, pour-over, espresso, cappuccino, americano, latte, tea, tea latte, and hot chocolate. They have several options for most categories, including a Caramel Macchiato, (White) Mocha, and a Rose Lavender latte, to name a few. They also have seasonal drinks, which are currently a Tiramisu Cold Brew and a Peppermint White (Chocolate) Mocha. For tea lattes, they have items like a Chai Latte, Matcha Latte, and even a few variations of those. The first time we went (last year), we got hot drinks. This most recent time we went (a couple days ago) we went with iced lattes. The wifey ordered the Rose Lavender, and I got the French Vanilla latte. We both loved our drinks, and were very happy with our decisions. It's only a difference of $0.50 to go from small (12oz.) to large (16oz.) and +$1 to have an alternative milk. We love to use oat milk, as it helps create an extra creamy drink. While they don't typically have their own cold foam per-se, they were able to add some of the whipped mascarpone from the tiramisu latte on top. Honestly this was the perfect topper to an already incredibly creamy and delicious drink. They also added some dried rose petals to the lavender one, which was a nice aesthetic. FOOD: There are just a few options, including various croissants and vegan pastries. They don't have a full kitchen, so the stuff isn't freshly made in-house. For the animal friends in your life, they also offer a Puppaccino for $1! OVERALL: This is definitely a place worth stopping for some quality coffee. They generally have 2 people working, unless one's on break or something. The service is pretty casual, and can take a while if there's a line. They take an order, then make the drink. I was really disappointed with the cold brew. I expected a smooth, rich, bold flavor, but instead it was extremely sour and tangy to the point that it honestly tasted under-extracted. It lacked the deep, balanced flavor most people associate with cold brew and instead had a sharp acidic taste that was hard to drink. I know some coffee shops prefer a brighter, fruit-forward style, but this tasted overwhelmingly sour rather than smooth or refreshing. Stopped by Pump Coffee in Pacific Beach and really liked the vibe. It's a cute little shop with warm decor, fun touches, and a cozy atmosphere. Service was friendly and quick. I tried the 16oz French Vanilla Latte -- the flavor was really good, though I wish it had been a bit hotter. Still enjoyed it overall! A nice spot to grab a coffee and chill for a bit. ICED MINT MATCHA WITH OAT MILK, 16OZ. YOU GOTTA GET IT. Need I say anything more?! This was my first time experiencing Pump Coffee and, admittedly, when I was giving the menu a gander, my brain had a hard time putting mint and matcha together. But after reading Yelp reviews that recommended the mint matcha, I had to get it. IT WAS SO TASTY Y'ALL!! The perfectly sweetened matcha and the touch of mint flavoring flowed so beautifully together. I loved how balanced this drink was. As most other folks already have, I MUST recommend this yummy beverage! Quick shout out to the friendly staff and to the fact that this is a woman-owned business. I LOVE supporting these kinds of spots. For the folks who are looking for a cafe to work remotely at, there are a few tables on the inside as well as bench seating on the outside. A great spot to check some emails and crank out an hour or two of work. Overall, I highly recommend this spot to both locals and travelers alike! read more

Pump Coffee wasn't originally on our list of stops for my bachelorette weekend but after a slight detour of plans, we decided to make a stop here for coffee. Small little spot with only a few tables & chairs indoors and outdoors. This is more of a grab n go kind of place. Between the five of us, we got some matcha lattes, iced jasmine green tea and lavender rose lattes. We were all pleasantly pleased with our drinks. The female cashier and baristas were all so sweet. They congratulated me plus left a nice message on my cup too. :) There's an underground parking garage conveniently located next to Pump Coffee and I believe they validate up to two hours. read more

What a great little find when I was walking around Mission/Pacific Beach! I'm a huge walker and was in the need for caffeine... hello Pump Coffee! It's tucked away in a shopping center, so off the beach boardwalk section ((but a few doors down from such a fun rollerskating shop)). I came in about an hour before closing on a Saturday; while they were getting some of their closing tasks done, the two girls working were still friendly and attentive. They have a great tea selection; so happy to have found this spot. If it had been earlier in the day, I definitely would have stopped in for a second cuppa. Went to Pump Coffee while on vacation, six days in a row, while on vacation. Here is what I noticed. Killer pastry display. Only had them one out of six days, but the display was always fresh and had plenty of artisan items to choose from. Always two people on staff. Not always the same two, but everyone was very friendly and fairly fast. The place is small but inviting. Always a bunch of gym-bros from the gym upstairs, standing or sitting around, making the place feel even smaller......but they all seemed nice and not territorial of "their coffee shop". No locals only vibes given. Prices are fair and probably could be a little higher. Every small business deserves to charge enough to be able to keep the lights on. Only one small critique; Every morning I could tell which coffee was my wife's, without even looking at the to go cups. It was always the one that was overfilled with cream and would drip on my hand, all the wall back to the hotel. lol Consistency counts for something. read more

Stopped by for an espresso and tea. Espresso gave me an unfamiliar slap at the first sip but started to ease out with a nice nutty body and subtle brightness afterwards. Served with wet saucer... The tea was very smooth and enjoyable, typical elegance found in Rishi teas. read more

Everything! Racism--perhaps. I was in a morning work call, and I went in to order and asked for the restroom. She said I needed to order so that it's ready when I return. I explained I was in a call--listening to a remote meeting--and I would order when I returned. She then went on to say for me to receive keys to the restroom, I needed to purchase first. She was passive-aggressive in her level of service. For 30 minutes into the call I sat in front of the coffee shop, and once I was able to enter, I was met with THAT. It's whack and uncalled for. Not to mention I went there before, and the other girl had NO PROBLEM with letting me use the restroom key. The only issue then was no one washed their hands between handling a dirty restroom key and preparing drinks. They literally dive back in. This is not the type of place I will patronize ever again. read more

We walked by Pump and had to stop cause the menu looked good and had some different options like the mint matcha (which is what I ordered!). The service was incredible and welcoming - it's clear they care about their customers and make everyone feel acknowledged. I ordered a mint Matcha (half sweet-could have done a bit less since I don't love super sweet drinks), and a double shot espresso, both were delicious! I was walking the boardwalk when I saw multiple signs for Pump Coffee, the signage was beautifully made so I wasn't wary of going there. They have signs posted every 20 steps that lead you the way to the shop. There is a few outdoor seating and 4 tables inside. As well as three chairs at the back of the wall. The sun illuminates the menu nicely-- but as you get further into the shop it gets pretty dim even with the lighting overhead. The lights are warm colored which is great for ambiance, but very dim and small. Some of the walls are painted black-- along with the ceiling and the tables are black as well... this creates a feeling of an enclosed space. To match their signs, the place is black and white theme. I think it would be cool if they take from their website and incorporate colors that show: warmth, love, and gratitude. Anyways, onto the coffee. I ordered a 12 oz, iced honey cinnamon latte with whole milk. This costed $7! It's a bit steep in price, $1 more than other places for a specialty latte~ that's just something to note. Even though it was on the pricy side the latte was really good. Be sure to give it a mix or swirl yourself since the cinnamon floats to the top. Solid latte! The woman working here was really friendly and kind! She asked about my day, how it was going, and some other things. I thought it was nice of her to create a little bit of convo~ Great and fast service (: Overall, a great coffee shop to satisfy your coffee needs! :D they also have tea!! Stopped by here for a quick coffee and some food and stepped into a very busy cafe with a line almost out the door. The two women working were very quick and efficient and the line moved quickly. I ordered a pumpkin muffin and a cafe latte with 2% milk. The barista was also quick to make my beverage. Both the drink and muffin were fine and no complaints there. I wasn't asked if I wanted my muffin warmed up, which would have been nice. The wifi was also very quick and efficient. Note that this place is very tiny and when more than 10 people were in the space it got extremely loud, and therefore I would not recommend it as a place to try to get work done. There's also no bathroom in the coffee shop, but I believe the complex has a shared bathroom which I do not know the state of. read more

Found this little coffee shop walking along the beach one morning - a tiny storefront, I wouldn't recommend planning to work here or anything like that. My boyfriend got a vanilla cold brew and I had a cold brew with Almond Milk & Pistachio - there are tons of fun flavors here! For only being a 2 person operation, they were timely with a busy morning of orders - the barista even let me just add my own amount of milk and taste along the way which I appreciated. The nicest, sweetest women baristas work here. It is a small, cozy place where to quote the TV sitcom "Cheers", "where everybody knows your name". Regulars hang out here in the morning. The pastries are delicious. I ordered the jalapeño cheese galette. It is made with plant based cashew cream cheese. I ordered the seasonal rose lavender latte with oat milk. What a great first experience here. My girlfriend and I visited here from Menifee and I had the Iced Honey Cinnamon Latte and it was delicious! Reminded me of a Mexican coffee. So good!
