I had a California closet walk-in closet installed as well as a linen closet system and most recently, cabinets installed in my laundry room. They were all very well made and of high quality. The installers were very respectful of my home and were very courteous as well. For the most recent installation, the laundry room cabinet installation, the installer- Cameron- came over on his day off to do the installation. I would not expect that but he did not want me to wait another month. I interacted most with Cameron, who was very friendly, respectful, and hard-working. I know it was difficult for him to work on his day off. I would recommend California Closets to anyone who wants a beautiful closet- or cabinets. My designer was Nancy Dayian, who also designed a system for my previous address and also for my sister. I loved the design and the closet is spacious and beautiful. I have so much room! read more

I hired California Closets to install floor-to-ceiling shelving in my condo. The consultants accommodated my detailed design, and the installation was scheduled for five weeks later on Dec. 26. I moved everything out of the space; Because my place is small, everything I had to move out of the space had to be scattered all over the rest of my condo, making daily life very uncomfortable. However, I was excited about getting the work done. The installer showed up on time. About halfway through, I went in to check on the work. I was shocked to see that all materials were about a foot deep instead of the 24" specified in the contract/design. The installer called the designer, who said it was a production error. For the next two weeks I tried repeatedly to get a new installation date -- or even find out when I might expect to know a new installation date. I was referred from one person to another, none of whom gave me any answer. Finally, after 2 weeks of being in the dark, I was told the new installation had been scheduled for a week later. Unfortunately, that meant I had to cancel a planned trip so I could be there during the new installation (because communication had been so poor about the revised date, I had no confidence about trying to change it.) The second installer did a painstaking job, and I have no quarrel with the end result. However, no one from Cal Closets checked with me to see if I had any problems with it or make sure I was satisfied with the work. Instead, I heard nothing until I was notified by my credit card company that they had simply gone ahead and charged me for the balance due. I immediately emailed the designer, the production coordinator, and someone whose name I was given when I went to the office to speak to a manager. I asked that CalClosets refund me $100 to compensate me for the inconvenience caused by their "production error" and the amount I lost on airfare from having to change my trip. That would have been 4% of the total price, which I thought was fair considering the problems were all caused by the company. I received absolutely no response from any of the people I contacted. Basically, this was the worst customer service I've ever experienced in virtually any area. Besides the initial materials error, the terrible communication (or lack thereof) about everything following was what really left me wanting to warn others about what to expect from this company. read more

We just purchased a new home and decided to turn an extra bedroom into a walk in closet. We came up with a design with our consultant, Nicki. She was amazing and really understood our vision. The day of installation started as expected. The installer was on time and the closet came out great. However, the tape that was used to secure the protective blankets on our floors ripped up the lacquer on the hardwood. Obviously not intentional. However, the process of remedying the damage has been an absolute nightmare. The Service Team Manager has been extremely difficult to deal with and almost impossible to get a hold of. The possibility of a new coat lacquer was suggested and then redacted. We just want them to make it right. read more

I would give California Closets negative stars if I could. They have no idea how to run a business and provide high quality service. We are over 3.5 months into a project that was supposed to take 1 week. I get that there are supply chain issues. We started finalized design, signed contract, and ordered our products in early May. As of late Oct, still not complete and we've had numerous delays and products / pieces 'Not ordered' or 'Missing'. These people are a joke. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

It's sad I have to do this as I've used this company a few times for different residences. I scheduled a repair of a newly installed closet lock box to keep my valuables safe while away. I have had a terrible time getting the locked drawer locked/unlocked. Having followed all instructions given at the time of installation, I believed its use would be smooth but I was wrong. I scheduled an appointment for repairs. Not only did they not call to let me know the status, they flat out didn't show. The lock box doesn't work and I'm leaving town in the morning. This company is filled with liars who aren't worth the price. read more

I feel compelled to compliment Calif Closets for their excellent service. We had an uncommon type project ...creating an interior recycle bin with addl space for paper towels etc. they custom designed it to our specifications, installed on time and were really responsive throughout the process. Then, maybe six months after it was installed I sort of... broke the bin. I seemingly pressed too hard to compact the paper etc and the bin broke off the rail. CC sent talented workman to our house, who correctly diagnosed the problem and then fixed it, at least temporarily. The repair man (I cant remember his name...) took pictures and I even think some video for the design people to see if more should be done ...I'm waiting to hear back from CalClosets. But their service was seamless and in these days, well, that is remarkable. read more

Our designer, Hailee, was fabulous. She took careful measurements and came up with a plan then came up with an even better plan. Everything is scheduled and you know when they are coming and how long they plan for the work to take. Half payment up front and second half when completed to your satisfaction. Still waiting for the installation of a drawer which was wrongly designed in the original installation. The original installation was in November 2020. Today is July 2nd 2021. In the interim, they sent 2 wrong drawers and promised to replace quickly. I have a whole chain of emails and text messages with the company and with the sales rep. No one apologizes. No one calls you. Absolutely horrendous customer service. I have been a loyal customer for years and have spent a lot of money with this company but would absolutely NOT reccommend it to anyone after such an awful experience. I originally contacted California Closets on 5/27, emailed Cynthia a photo of the wall closet that I wanted, and was given an in-home appointment for 6/7 with Amy. Amy was efficient during the visit showing me colors and a sample of the composite they use. A week later (6/14), we met on zoom to discuss the design, which was presented as a cad drawing online. The cad drawing aims to present the proposal as a "3-D" model. In my case, they added a huge "bed" in front of the wall closet to presumably provide perspective. It was quite annoying as it prevented me from seeing the unit's face. Two days later (6/16), Amy emailed a link to the design, which had now been priced at $6207. I was provided no price breakdown nor any information that would allow me to figure out what made the project so expensive nor how to amend the design to come up with a design that would fit my budget. I immediately emailed and stated that this was too expensive for me. A week later (6/24), I was offered a price of $4420 for a unit with no backing in the closet. I emailed back that neither unit (with or without back) was like the one I had asked for. I had originally provided a photograph of the design I wanted. I even went to the effort (6/26) to provide my drawing of exactly what I wanted inside and outside. I emailed to follow up on 6/29 and then on 6/30. On 6/30, Amy emailed me promising to send a design later that day, and after that, I never heard from her again (note it is now 7/7). read more

My experience with California Closets was wonderful. From the start, the design process with Jo was very easy. She did such a great job utilizing my space. Her design really maximized my storage space. The installation appointments were 4 months out from when I met with the designer. I was able to get on a waiting list and get my installation a month earlier, but still did have to wait quite a bit of time. The installation was professional and quick and I am very happy with the final product. It looks amazing and I have so much more space now! I'm a professional builder and would never use California Closets again. Delay on top of delay and absolute lack of any sort of quality control. Given the complicated renovation we were doing I opted for reliable customer service, Big mistake. I will NEVER use California Closets again. There was NO customer service. The installation team showed up with an attitude and, more importantly, half of the closet totally wrong. They left a pile of uninstalled stuff in the space and all I got was an email telling me they would be back in two weeks. Mistakes happen. But there was no apology from anyone. And there was no effort to correct the mistake quickly. No flexibility on when they would be back. California Closets is supposed to be a premium brand. They do not deserve the reputation. The stuff I got is okay, nothing special; but the service was terrible. Go elsewhere. read more

I contacted California Closets for a design consultation for 3 closets in my house (master bedroom, guest bedroom, and entryway). These are all normal closets and all I wanted was a design consultation prior to agreeing to work. Two days before my scheduled consultation, my designer called for what I thought was a confirmation of my appointment. Instead, she asked for a description of all my closets (again, in addition to the initial paragraphs I wrote online) and then mentioned that there was "nothing she could do" as I described each closet. Again, these are standard closets and nothing crazy. I cancelled my appointment and would recommend that you don't bother to request one. read more

THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS FOR CUSTOM CLOSETS, DO NOT EMPLOY THE BOSTON LOCATION. Some experiences just go so poorly that you almost cant believe it is actually happening. Enter my experience with CA Closets. The long and the short: Designer vastly mis-measured our space which caused installation and outcome to be significantly different than agreed upon. I was then stood up, not contacted, left in the dark with the agreed finish work uncompleted. More than a month later, I was billed for the job as if it were complete. When i reached out to discuss, the real gem of customer service began. They offered me a 20% discount, not even close to adequate. Here is my final exchange. Rather than editorialize the experience, which I would be unable to do without getting emotional and personal, please read my exchange with the management of the Boston branch. (Ive removed names out of respect for privacy) _________________ Hi Gxxx, Thank you for your follow-up correspondence to our previous conversation with your two letters. After seeking advice from some consumer advocacy groups and my attorney, the following suggestion was made: "In a two party performance contract, one party (buyer) doesn't have to fully preform unless the other party (seller) fully performs as agreed upon in contracts and verbal arrangements. Present a reasonable counter offer representative of the variation from the agreed upon services, taking into account any delays, unresponsiveness and impact on correlated home improvement projects." In looking at the final product as well as the process to reach the state of the final project, I feel as though the discrepancy between the result and the agreed upon sale is significantly more than the 20% proposed in your email, but is less than the 50% we've currently paid. I believe the process was approximately 1/3 off the agreed upon deliverables, and would therefore coalesce to an agreement wherein we would receive a 35% deduction from the total bill, leaving the remaining balance being $487.50 to be paid. As mentioned during our phone calls and the previous conversations with California Closet staff, I've been advised that I'm on good ground to dispute the contract based on the following: - Contractual work was not performed in a "workmanlike manner" based on the following factors: o "Unforeseen circumstances" doesn't apply due to the primary purpose of the designer's pre-installation visit and quote was to accurately determine the feasibility and scope of the project. Within 30 minutes of the installation's inception, the installers determined a wide array of errors in the measurement of the space o By designer Exxxx Gxxxxxxxx's own admission "If I'd properly measured the space, I would not have recommended that you purchase the closet" o Installers merely wedged loose trim pieces into the gaps caused by the mis-measurement, leaving uneven and exposed pieces of wood o Wire harness was not installed and the agreed upon back coverage was not installed o Adjacent walls and floors were damaged during installation due to the mis-measured materials being jammed into place and careless handling of tools o Providers were routinely late (by hours) or did not show for appointments If you claim that the unforeseen circumstances are the reason for the vast discrepancy to build, construction and esthetics, the validity of the agreement is further called into question because of " its failure to list a material part of the contract (risks and/or "unforeseen circumstance") thereby vitiating consent". Because of Exxxx's multiple assertions that the custom build would be able to accommodate any space, her "oral promises referencing the esthetics of the project are a promissory estoppel that caused a false inducement to contract" I hope we can agree to the 35% discounting outlined here as it represents a fair determination of the deviation from the project plan and contract. I don't normally leave reviews but this was such a positive experience, I decided to write one. We got two closets from CC for our new condo. We loved working with CC from start to finish. Jennifer was our designer and she did an excellent job, willing to meet with us multiple times to tweak the design. She was always available to answer our many questions and usually responded in a couple of hours via email. There were a couple of minor issues with baseboard removal and sprinkler clearance but they were worked out. The installation crew was great as well. Very professional, even after hauling all the closet parts up three flights of stairs. They set up blankets everywhere to avoid scratching our floors, and cleaned up all the debris afterward. Despite the sprinkler issue, they were able to modify the closet and give us as close to the original design as possible. The closets turned out absolutely gorgeous! We will definitely use CC in our next home. read more

I had all kinds of anxiety about getting my closet redone. So much money! What if I picked the wrong company? I picked California Closets because I had heard of them before. Kathleen came out and did some measuring for my free consultation , then I came in to the showroom to see her design and look at materials. I liked the design, so I just went for it. My project involved a lot of extra work because I was also opening up the wall and having larger doors installed. Kathleen referred me to a great carpenter/electrician for getting the door opening ready. He was a real gentleman and did great work. His name is Scott Fleischer . I have reviewed him elsewhere. Scott suggested a few other things that could be done, like resurfacing the ceiling, which was cracked. Well, you certainly don"t want an icky looking ceiling with a beautiful new closet, do you? So I went for that. His painter also gave me an estimate for reprinting the room, which it most certainly needed. I went for that as well, and the painter did a beautiful job. In short, I love the closet and I basically have a whole new room! I am glad I chose California Closets. I especially like the new sliding closet doors I have. Not all closet companies do doors. These slide really nicely and look very nice. Also, I have to mention that my entire condo is only 400 square feet, so they got all of this done in very cramped quarters. read more

We live in the Northpoint complex in East Cambridge and wanted to add a multi-purpose entertainment center to our loft condo. We've worked with California Closets before, but for this project we wanted a very creative designer with contemporary flare. She was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and so brilliantly creative. Our entertainment center needed to solve many needs (it had to be the focal point of our living room and have lots of open and closed storage) and Kristin's design delivered on EVERYTHING we were looking for. We could not have asked for a better unit. We gave her a laundry list of wishes and she was able to work them all into the system. To top it off, the installers were also professional, courteous, and came back promptly when one of the closet doors was improperly cut. I would highly recommend California Closets! They were amazing. The Design Consultant, Erin that I worked with was very professional, thorough, helpful and timely. She came to my condo to check out the space and do some measurements. She also came prepared with some samples and offered many creative options/suggestions which I loved! Once we worked through the budget and the design, she sent a few digital prototypes to choose from which was very helpful in the final decision making process. The actual installation process was even easier and seamless. It took less than two hours to complete two big closets. My now fiancé moved in shortly after the installation which made it nice for a shared, organized space. The folks at California Closets were fantastic. Brianne worked with us on the design. The crew did a terrific job (and had to deal with a room/ceilings/etc that were not quite square). Once the room was done, we realized we needed the edges sealed so that nothing would slide down in the areas where counter met wall. CC sent someone to us to take care of this. I now have a Murphy bed, bookshelves, tons of drawer space, file drawers, cabinets, and desk space. My whole guest room/office is transformed and beautiful, and so usable - perfect for me! read more

We hired California Closets to build us custom closets in the master bedroom and guest bedroom of our new condo. We made this decision off of a friend's recommendation and generally being familiar with the brand, which is why the terrible experience we actually had came as such a surprise. Design The initial interactions went pretty smoothly, the designer came to our home and took measurements and then we booked an appointment in the showroom to discuss designs. The designs he initially came up with seemed pretty reasonable except that they lacked full length hanging (like for long dresses). He gave me a somewhat hard time about incorporating this (told me I should "just put my dresses in the coat closet") but eventually came up with something we liked. Install (Round 1) We had contracted to have a 2 day install. On the first day, an installer came with all the materials for the two closets, dropped them off, and left. We were initially confused as to why no installing was happing but he said that it was scheduled to be a 2 day job and that it would be completed the next day. Having never done this before, we took his word for it. The next day a different installer came back. He arrived over 3 hours after we were told to expect him and did not call to tell us he was late. Before leaving he completed roughly 25% of the install work and told us it was because the guy the day before was supposed to start the install but got called away for another job. Confusing, but ok. Day 3 rolls around and the same guy comes back, does another chunk of work. He was either extremely under-qualified to be working alone or rushing to finish because it was done extremely poorly. When we got home, we noticed that the install did not match the design we had contracted and called our designer, who came out and agreed that it was incomplete, but informed us that we couldn't get another installer in for a full week. Week goes by, a different installer shows up, looks at the work the previous installer had done and told us that it was done so poorly (vinyl peeling off, rough edges, uneven dividers, etc) that we were better off tearing out the entire thing and starting over. So instead of completing the job, he proceeded to tear it out leaving us with a mess and still no closet. I would say that we were back at square 1, but during the install/uninstall, our new construction condo sustained quite a bit of damage including scratches/divots in the brand new hardwood floors and marks on the walls. CC did not take any responsibility for this or compensate us for the damage. Install (Round 2) It took another week before CC had an available installer to "finish" our job. Two men came (the one who had done the tear down and another new guy) and finished everything up minus a shelf they forgot and some accessories (both of which we still don't have, but have paid for). The second group of installers were great but I definitely did not feel like CC valued our business or treated us with respect. They prioritized a different client over us on the first day knowing that they would not complete our job within the contracted timeframe and without ever apologizing for or alerting us to this change of schedule. The 3 extra days of workmen in our house meant that my husband and I had to juggle a lot of unplanned time away from the office with minimal notice. For the very expensive price we paid, the headache was not worth it. I will not be recommending CC to anyone else. read more

If you're thinking about having California Closets install a Murphy bed for you, I'd recommend thinking twice. After paying over $2000 to get the bed and have it installed, we are selling our house and the new owners don't want it. California Closets now wants $450 to uninstall it and another $450 to put it back up. When I asked if there are any instructions or schematics for how to disassemble it, I was told they don't provide that information. read more

Chloe is an expert designer, and really listens to what you need, but adds her expertise for an amazing finished product. She knows how to maximize storage space in city apartments so you get the most out of your closets. She also designed a beautiful wet bar and build in shelving in our living room. I know there are many closets solutions out there, as well as using contractors, but for the service, design, quality and price, I will never go anywhere else for closet and storage solutions! read more

We worked with the Brighton (MA) CC location. "Top Shelf" is absolutely right. Chloe O'Keeffe was our designer for several bookcases in our home and shelving in our garage. Her work was outstanding. She has a terrific sense of style but most of all is practical and flexible. The installers were also terrific - we did this in stages and had several installers, and all of them did outstanding work and were consummate gentlemen. All of the work, from design to install, was done on time, on budget, and is absolutely gorgeous. Totally worth the money to have everything done right the first time. We would not hesitate to use Chloe and the installers with the Brighton CC location again and we recommend them to everyone. PS Yes, you can try to save money with build-it-yourself products - we have done that a lot in the past. This time - let the professionals at CC build you things that will add quality to your home while sparing you the time and headaches that come with planning, designing, measuring, driving, lifting, loading, carting, carrying, building, and cleaning up!! I worked with Chloe O'Keeffe while we were renovating our condo in back bay. We got new 3 closets in our 1 bedroom place. Chloe was super nice, super helpful and made the whole process incredibly easy. I would HIGHLY recommend california closets. Their configuration drastically improved the functionality of our closets. And I was stunned at how much stuff we can fit into our closets now. I would highly recommend CC for anyone who lives in a tiny condo like we do. We were lucky and were able to take advantage of their October promotion. We upgraded to a high end Lago wood for the price of white shelving. We probably saved 1-2k on that promotion. read more

I've never written a review but I needed express my disappointment with CC. I've used them before and was very happy but not this time. Closet measurements were way off and designer was non responsive. Not sure why they have their designers do measurements. I was fortunate the installer was great and was able to make it look ok. I was assured that I would not have to pay until I was completely satisfied but they charged my cc and have not received any follow up despite my complaining to corporate. I moved into a new condo with limited storage, but fortunately it had a rather large walk in closet. It was critical that I maximized the efficiency of the closet. I worked with Michelle Crandall who was great - very skilled in designing solutions.. I never needed to go to a showroom. Michelle came over the condo looked at the space, measured and then reviewed options with me. She sent me drawings electronically and worked with me to value engineer the system. After a few tweaks I agreed to a design which I though would work great and it has worked great. The installation was professional too - it was handled by one installer who I wondered if he would be able to install in one day - but sure enough the system fit right in and was installed quickly. He was highly skilled and left me w/ exactly what I had ordered. Maybe a little expensive, but it's high quality, it's design and the follow through make it worth it. read more
