I used them for cabinets a couple of years ago. Andrea was a pleasure to work with. The process to design is fun and makes you feel like a rich person. Everything went great, but then we recently noticed black mold behind one of them. The home was brand new, so this seemed a very strange coincidence. They have a limited lifetime warranty, and I reached out. They did open a claim and came out to inspect. They took off the bottom cabinet and found no damage on their end, so I opened a claim with my insurance. The remediation company came out, and they were baffled on what happened. They had to remove the floating shelves installed above the cabinet and found those screws punctured the water pipe, causing a very slow leak. After showing this to California Closets, they said too long of screws were used. Things happen, and people are human. This has been a long process, but they were professional and repaired/replaced/reinstalled the cabinet after the remediation had been completed. They're hopeful it won't happen again, so fingers crossed. Shout out to Cam, who was helpful throughout the process. The reason for 3 instead of 4 stars is that their insurance company is impossible to get a hold of and denying everything. 4 months into this whole process, and it's still ongoing. With 8 years experience as a designer--300 home remodels (custom kitchens with custom cabinets), here is my recommendation for California Closets product. Now retired and no affiliation with California Closets Portland. I referred clients to California Closets when I lived & worked in southern California, in the OC. California Closets is a solid product with talented designers and good execution. Here's some tips in selecting California Closets or any cabinet maker for a remodel. 1) A designer that you connect with is important. Review designs (and options) on computer generated CAD in 3-D. If it's a challenging (big or small) space, designer can give you various iterations. Don't make up your mind right away. Think about it overnight. 2) Get three quotes. Evaluate: Product quality 1st. Designer & Installation 2nd. Price 3rd. 3) Get at least 3 or more referrals. Do call referrals to see how they liked the work performed. 4) Tour the factory. Get a sense for their organization, process and quality control. 5) Cabinetry may have custom wood doors (but not so much for closets). It's probably more acrylics or laminate's. Examine the doors. ENSURE California Closets PROVIDES SAMPLES WITH YOUR FINISH TO LOOK AT IN YOUR SPACE / CLOSET! How do they look and feel? How do they withstand use? If real wood doors, be sure a catalyzed varnish (not water base) is used to protect finish long term. Drawer boxes should be 100% full extension glides. The box should be dove tailed (best construction) in Maple or Birch. Melanie is ok (functional not as elegant) if you need to save money, but know the difference. All soft close doors and drawers is no extra cost. 6) Check all companies with the Better Business Bureau. Do they have any discrepancies or complaints from any work performed? 7) Know who the installer is? Do they work for California Closets? Independent? Experience level? Key to any cabinet project is the installation! PERIOD! I've been to California closets show room 3 times snooping around--nice, friendly, no pressure. Terra was amazing! The response was very quick from our initial inquiry, and Terra went out of her way to stop by the house and measure the closets, so when we can into town (we had not yet moved in) she was ready with a number of options. We met at the design studio, looked through all the options, and Terra had great ideas for our oddly shaped closets and laundry closet. Terra also referred us to a great contractor to remove the existing closets and the install when off without a hitch! We could not be happier, this was a great investment that made our closets into super functional and usable spaces! read more

California Closets was phenomenal to work with. Our original closet system was done by Portland Closet; however, after 6 weeks of waiting for an estimate we contacted California Closets. In less than a week Lauren came out to see our project and we had an estimate in 24 hours. Lauren was efficient, extremely knowledgeable and a joy to work with. I had a great experience with California Closets. My installation consisted of several bookshelves customized to fit an oddly-shaped space, and a pretty standard reach-in bedroom closet. I'm very picky about bookshelves and these are very sturdy and high-quality. The closet is simple but gorgeous--I have never in my life had such a grown-up looking closet. The staff in the store was very helpful every time I stopped by. Our designer, Kate, took the time to think through every detail and thought of all kinds of little issues I wouldn't have considered. She stayed in touch with me over a long period of time as I was doing renovations and juggling a tricky schedule. She always followed up on every detail, and even helped me figure out how other pieces of furniture would fit with my new built-ins. The installation was equally trouble-free--it was all done exactly on schedule, took less time than expected, and the installers took the time to answer my questions and just walk through the whole thing to make sure everything was right. They were installing on top of brand new floors and took great care to protect them, which I very much appreciated. I was told by several friends and design professionals that California Closets was a pricey way to go, so I did shop around and compare prices, as well as quality. I do not have money to burn and definitely did not want to overpay. I could not find a comparable option for the same price anywhere else (nor could the design professionals, when I pressed them to. They were surprised to see that some of the options they thought would be cheaper actually weren't.) I just moved out of a house that I'd filled with cheap, off-the-shelf storage solutions, and as I was moving out, I could really see how badly that kind of stuff ages. Everything was warped, faded, chipped, stained, etc. I could absolutely see the value in stepping up to something that's made to last and has a lifetime guarantee behind it. read more

I recently had a small project to construct some cabinet shelves in my laundry closet. Called California Closets and another local company. Luckily for me, Ca. Closets sent out Laurie Mills and I cannot say enough about her as a design consultant. I showed her a photo of what I had in mind, showed her the closet with it's tricky right-side angled wall (due to a stairwell), and she went to work. Within a very short time, she had a 3D workup on her laptop for me to view, and came up with a second configuration in case I didn't like the first one. I like that she went over all the contract paperwork with me point by point, making sure everything was clear. The shelves were installed the very next week, and I couldn't be happier, they are perfectly lovely and just what I had in mind. Now here is the important part: The other local company I called looked at the same idea photo, put together something totally unresponsive to what I asked for, AND, with a 40% sale price, was STILL almost twice what Ca. Closets charged. So much for the criticism that Ca. Closets is overpriced or charges too much. Do yourself a favor, give California Closets a call! read more

We had decided to make a "leasehold improvement" to the apartment we are renting in the Pearl with the addition of a custom closet setup. We had a generous 6' x 7.5' walk-in closet space, but it was only equipped with two sides of single hanging bar and a shelf. We called California Closets to come and give us a proposal, as well as another local vendor. Daniel came out to measure and offer a plan. He arrived on time and brought his laptop along. And he listened very closely to what we thought we wanted from a functional stand point. He prepared a plan for us on the computer which we could study and inquire about modifications on the spot, working with us until we had a plan that seemed to be a good choice. Then he priced it for us, talked about potential schedules, and the delegation of responsibilities for removing the existing closet hardware ( which we did ourselves). He also talked to us about the product...materials used, construction, finishes and trims. Very informative, but absolutely no "pressure sales" at any time...he was promoting his product and the company's design capabilities, but in a "here is what we offer" matter of fact way. The CC price and that of the other firm were with $40 of one another. We had emotionally been favoring to local firm, but Daniel's thorough sales presentation and excellent design blew them out of the water. When we made out order and deposit, Daniel once again got our installation slotted much quicker than expected and the CC installer, Will Matthews, showed up a week later. He was on time, polite, took care to make sure we understood what he would be doing, and very conscientious about taking care to not have his work "overflow" into the rest of the apartment. And, he brought along everything he needed to get the job done. He was especially efficient, polite, and thorough, including even vacuuming up his work area and a bit of packaging spillage out in the apartment hallway. A job very well done. Now, we have this wonderful closet which provides much more storage space in a configuration that really works for us. It is a real "game changer" with respect to the comfort and ease of living (which, for us, represented a "downsize" from a single family, 4,000 sq ft home to a 710 sq ft apartment). I have not bought any California Closets, but will speak to their process. My designer, Laurie contacted me and came as requested on a Saturday. She carefully listened to my proposal and provided options for me. I really appreciated the fact that my input was very important, and that my concerns were heard and her thinking was modified accordingly. She did everything she said she would (i.e. get in touch with a contractor about certain wall modifications) and sent over a detailed proposal. I decided to wait until other renovations went through. During the entire consultation process I enjoyed the fact that I was not pushed into closing anything. I was given a proposal and felt no pressure to commit to anything. I did not feel rushed and Laurie was happy to listen to all my ideas. I do appreciate being treated as a human being rather than a sales target. I cannot testify to the quality of the product, only the process, but I am sure most people here already know about California Closets. read more

Karina G. was amazing in helping me design my closet!! She took all of the measurements and my ideas and sat with her tablet generating the design at my condo while I waited. We sat together and tweaked it, changing dimensions and colors until it was exactly the way I had envisioned it. She had all of her finish samples with her so I could match other finishes in the room. She was great, very personable and professional, with excellent advice and ideas that I had never thought of, and I'm an interior designer myself. Could not recommend this place more highly. We worked with Nicole K., who was fabulous. While they do have very expensive closets, she was able to work with us to find one that fit our budget. But it still looks absolutely beautiful! She started by spending over an hour getting to know us and what is important to us (she asked questions I wouldn't even think of), and then spent time analyzing our current closet. What she came back with was fantastic! We even had her make a pantry organizer for us. And when that arrived in the wrong color due to a miscommunication (largely on our part), she took it back and got it fixed immediately! Again, could not recommend California Closets more highly.
