I had a very difficult job needing to change out two rusted commercial mortise locks. I was fortunate enough to get the owner Jeff. he was the trifecta of honest, personable and skilled. he has a very calm demeanor and was quite pleasant and reassuring along the way that he would be able to resolve the issue of removing the rusted lock without damaging the door, that it was just a matter of how, trying to least invasive steps first. he worked liked a skilled artisan during the process and though he had not installed the remote version of the lock before instead of giving up or skipping steps he took his time to read each instruction and even watch the online videos from the manufacturer as he was proceeding to make sure it was done right, and there were many steps. he was very personable throughout the job. he finished around 8:30 p.m. at night and I was sure he was going to reschedule for the second lock but instead he stayed and got the second lock installed even though it was late at night. the next day I wanted to tip him $100 for his work because both locks were installed and looked great and took a lot longer than anticipated, but he declined and just asked me to pay the amount he originally quoted. During the job he even took the time to level the lock several times until it was just perfect. I also noticed the next day that the door closed a lot easier than it ever had before so I guess he took it upon himself to adjust whatever was causing it to stick which was outside the scope of just installing the new lock but he made sure it worked perfectly. probably one if the best contractors I've ever hired. needless to say i will be using him for all my future lock needs, now all i need is a plumber and an electrician. read more

Jeff installed a very complicated handcrafted mortise lock set on our new Craftsman front door (see photos). He was meticulous in measuring and routing the openings in the door and fitting the new door hardware. Jeff was able to modify some of the parts when incorrect parts were sent by the manufacturer, rather than wait weeks for correct parts to be sent. Sometimes, you do something really stupid, like walk out of your apartment without your keys. Sometimes, the Universe is really out to get you and BOTH of you walk out of your apartment without your keys. If this ever happens to you, call Jeff. After discovering that we were locked out at 10:00 p.m. and contemplating a night spent in a hotel, we frantically decided to Yelp locksmiths. Jeff's name came up and we called. Within 20 minutes of calling, Jeff was at our door. For a totally reasonable price (definitely cheaper than a night at the W, or any hotel in SF for that matter), Jeff got us in through our newer model, supposedly pick-proof security door AND in through our less sophisticated apartment door. To top off the whole horrible experience, one of our well-meaning (read that, busybody, if you will) neighbors across the street called the police and reported a B&E in progress. As Jeff was packing up and leaving, roughly 20 of San Francisco and UCSF's finest appeared on our stoop (must've been a slow night on the streets of San Francisco). I am not sure if this is a common occurrence in the locksmith trade, but Jeff took the whole thing in stride and managed to laugh while Michael and I stood by mortified. This was a miserable experience that would've gone much worse without Jeff's help. this is a story of possible carnage and violence. disclaimer: don't read late at night or if at home alone. i arrived home tonight greeted by my roommate looking serious with the following chilling words, "hey michelle, i don't want to scare you but it looks as if someone broke into the lock box last night. you know, the one designated for the fire department-- and stole all the keys to our building inside it...." these were the master keys to our building. which includes direct elevator access to everyone's living rooms in our building, as well as the key to my private elevator entrance, which opens up right into my bedroom.
