We've built two pools with California Pools while Mike was alive. There were hiccups but they were fair at making it work. However, one of the pools has started to leak and the shotcrete apparently is cracked. THere is a warranty on the pool on earlier this Spring, I reached out to them to have them return to repair. After 20 phone calls, texts and handfuls of messages, the shotcrete person they contract finally got himself to our place two weeks ago and promised to return with a plan of action. Summer has come and gone and the pool is now collecting rain water and a mosquito haven. I'm truly disappointed and my wife is going to the contractor board. read more

Now ive had my pool for a while,... ran i to some issues and plumber says rhat california pools put in a grey line supposedly for electrical.... come to find out its leaking water and not a electrical line....hmmm dis they get confused and not know electical supoosed to be a grey pvc.... plumbing is white. It's been a few months and so we thought an update was in order. After we started using the pool on a daily basis, we noticed that there are several flaws in the pebble surface. Portions of the bottom of the pool are very uneven and sharp. And, most importantly, the tile job is just awful. First off, the grout is certainly NOT the color we requested. We asked for dark gray and this is nearly white. They said it would get darker but if anything it is lighter. Super disappointing. And, as we looked at the tile work from water level, it is uneven and poorly done. There is even one space where there is one small piece of tile in the middle of regular size tiles! And, the grout is missing in certain areas, especially at the filter drain. Overall, we love our pool but California Pools needs MUCH better customer service after the job AND a much better tile crew. They really did a terrible job. read more

He said that he would get back with us with a quote and that he would find out about the upslope in our backyard. I called Hunter to follow up and said that he would email us the following Tuesday.....still nothing. I called him again and left him a message basically informing him, if they can't do the job just simply let us know. I don't want to waste my time and theirs. Up to date still crickets....not heard back from him. Don't waste your time. If they can't even respond for a quote or simply an email/phone call to let us know anything, I can't imagine starting a pool project with this company. It's just bad business and unethical. Joe came out and provided us with a great design, which he patiently amended, in order to comport with our changing desires at the outset of the project. After working with a previous builder (who was recommended by our real estate agent) and seeing the project fall through (luckily prior to excavation), we had to reevaluate our project with a number of builders with new bids, new convos, and a ton of back and forth. This led us to California Pools who also happened to be a personal recommendation and we were very happy with our decision. CA Pools did these three things really well: 1. They were professional and more importantly responsive to questions/concerns. Communication was great throughout the entire project! 2. Quality of work was great. we loved our experience with california pools - especially with wyatt and joe. every step of the process was handled professionally, courteously, and timely. plus they're great guys to be around that generally put us at ease with a new process and put up with constant communication from myself and my wife via text, email, calls, etc. true professionals and good people. we first met with wyatt who came out to do a 3D render of our new pool based on a design we'd been working on. he was the only of five companies to provide this service for free, which was incredibly helpful and fun. they also took us around to several recently completed or current job sites so we could see both the quality of their work and what we could expect with the construction process. we were slightly surprised when his bid came in on the lower end of all the large companies we had bid the job, and we had no surprises along the way with additional costs. wyatt and joe were there through the various phases on construction to coach us through it and advocate for us, which was immensely helpful. when we had a complaint about the finish on one of our walls, they made sure it was redone in a timely manner to our standards. i couldn't recommend them highly enough. read more

I was very disappointed the way things turned out. We called to set up for an estimate for a new pool and spa. We were set up with Hunter. He came out to the house this past September, he was very very friendly and informative. We set up a meeting the following week for him to come back so we could see a proposed layout and price estimate. Hunter never showed. When I called him he said it was in his calendar but he didn't have a time, he thought it would be done by phone. He asked me for my email and he would email me the layout and estimate. After several hours and still not receiving anything I called, he said he would email me when he got back into the office. Suffice it to say, I never received one email. This was very poor business practice. Why should I as a customer chase down a company. We decided to go with a competitor. It's unfortunate the way it played out. read more

We've done enough construction/renovation to our house that I know every job runs way longer than expected, has hidden costs, and other various surprises lurking around every corner. It's messy, at times annoying, and stressful. And building our pool (building?) was no exception. As these things seem innate to the process, I'm grading on a curve and not factoring any of that into my rating. Rather, I'm choosing to focus on the business practices of CP (San Gabriel) in General and those of project manager, Joe in specific. We originally worked with Sean, who got fired by Wyatt and was replaced with Joe. It took a while to sort that out but once Joe was on the job he was great to work with. As the business of building does have hidden surprises, it seems a huge part of the project managers job is to be a flexible, patient, and an attentive problem solver, all while managing the clients' needs, schedule, and personalities balanced with those of the vendors. Joe's ability to troubleshoot any problems quickly and effectively made the project run smoothly in spite of there being some hiccups along the way. He did everything he could to make sure we were happy and comfortable with the daily circumstances of having strangers working in our backyard, the design process, and in the end, our pool. Even this week, a year after completion, we had an issue that we needed help with and he sent out his guys to fix our problem. Further, Joe is honest and straight forward. Even when he got some things wrong and misspoke, he was honest about it and cleared up the misunderstandings right away. CP's bid came in lower than the two other bids we got and they even gave us a credit for referring a friend. And when I miscalculated how much I owed them and as a result failed to pay them for a month and a half, they didn't even get mad (to my face). A couple points of constructive criticism - take it or leave it. 1. CP uses a handful of subcontractors that are working all over on various projects at varying degrees of completion and because of this I felt like it was sometimes difficult to schedule and thus caused some of the delays. 2. While almost all of the subcontractors CP used were respectful, clean and polite, without getting into details, there was one guy and his crew that I wasn't crazy about. Again, while I feel like Joe does a great job of managing the different personalities, I wonder if there's not a way CP could consistently measure and improve on the quality of interactions of their client facing vendors. That said, all in all we were very happy with Joe and Wyatt's service and we love our pool, so hey... read more

Let me start by saying THANK YOU SO MUCH California Pools, San Gabriel Valley Area for giving us a wonderful pool for our family and friends! We've only been swimming in it for a couple of weeks but we love everything about our pool. We are so happy that we chose CP over other companies that we interviewed. A great big THANKS to Wyatt who started off as our project manager. Wyatt along with Sean in the beginning came to our house with a beautiful computer rendition of our idea and vision of what we wanted for our backyard which was at first a concrete jungle and now is a backyard paradise. They gave us a list of every aspect of the order of the trades, what they would be doing for that particular day or week and when they would arrive at our home. Every trade that came to our home was very courteous and considerate of our surrounding neighbors which we appreciate greatly! Our pool was to take about 10 weeks to build and they were almost right on time. Just 1 week over. The hold up was getting the permit for the Altadena area. We started our initial meeting with CP at the end of February and it took 6 weeks just to get our permit which put us into the busy pool season. Which was no fault of CP. If that didn't happen I know the pool would have finished right on time. We also want to give a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Joe Duran who took over as our Project Manager half way through the process. He shadowed Wyatt in the beginning and was very nice and professional. He knew his stuff and was very informative. Joe was always available by phone or text to answer our questions. We will definitely refer anyone that ask about building a pool to contact California Pools and ask for Joe or Wyatt. Had an excellent experience with CA Pools. We mainly interacted with Joe who designed and managed our project. He was extremely helpful when we decided to make adjustments to the layout as the project progressed. Initial design/meeting - Extremely courteous and thorough. We were not entirely sure what we wanted and he helped guide us through suitable options for our property. Within a week or so he provided us with a 3d rendering. This was very helpful in seeing the overall vision. Construction - During this time we had several other projects taking place, all of which were on top of one another. Joe and his staff were very good about communicating when they would and would not be there. During the construction phase we also began making minor changes or additions to the project and he was very accommodating. Always letting us know what was next and what pieces it would effect. My only criticism was that I wanted them to upsell us on some items. I didn't know what was possible so I didn't know where we could make improvements. I believe they held back for the right reasons and didn't want to be pushy, I appreciate that. I'm the type that wants to see all the options and then bring it down to my scale. How do I begin? I LOVE MY POOL AND SPA! From the beginning in the design process, which by the way was amazing to see a computer mock-up, to dealing with the city of San Gabriel, which was a pain, to the execution of the project, I am extremely overjoyed with the project and work. Each crew was very polite, communicative, and clean and took care of my property. The timing schedule was accurate except for all the unseen issues they couldn't predict. My project manager was always available either by phone or text and I really appreciated how the owner of the company stopped by multiple times to oversee and make sure everything went according to plan and that I was pleased. All in all, I am extremely pleased with the pool, spa, and even the landscaping, which was beautiful and water conserving, which I appreciated.
