Decided to say basta to the stay at home order so I went to a sandwich joint that not only brings back memories from nearly two decades ago, but serves up a delicious Spicy treat. I got the Spicy sausage with cheese and mushrooms, and I do not regret the expense. Essentially I deemed my nutrition a necessity and selected this restaurant as the place to nourish my self. They are doing a great job of enforcing distancing, the place which had a packed lot was dead inside, yet they were still busy with customers coming and going. One of the best Italian sandwich restaurants in the city, with premium choices to add to your sandwich, their veal, Mangia fantastico! I had to use Italiano because it's just that and fresh, the sausage it's self is nothing remarkable but in the sand which it is amazing.

This is my ol' reliable. The one I go to when I'm starving and I need something to fill me up no question. When I get an urge for a solid sandwheech and I want that feeling in my hand where I'm eating a monster. That's what I get from this. Now, I don't think I'm putting California Sandwiches on the map here. It's not like I'm coming at you with some secret tech that only I know about. Naw. This place is an institution. They have a few different locations, and the one by College is probably the best one because it was the first one. But, none of those, my friend, can I walk to at a moment's notice. Having a place within arms reach is not a trait that any spot can possess. This one does. It truly is a monstrosity. There are those that fear eating it, for it may stain their clothes. Not I. I have embraced it for exactly what it is. A mess that must be eaten with two hands and a bucket. At least, the way I get mine. I get the chicken every single time. No question. I get mushrooms, cheese, and make it hot with the peppers. Oh, and extra sauce please. This is the key. I want my bread soggy and steamy. I want the thing to turn into a gooey mess with the cheese pull and the sauce on the back of my hand. Let me explain why this makes sense. The bread is extremely key, because if you have some bitch white bread then it soaks and completely falls apart. This is a nonna approved Italian bun, reinforced with gluten and whatever shit so that it can be the perfect structural vessel. Strong foundation, I approve. Next is the sauce. I'm not going to sit here and try and dissect someone's tomato sauce. Everyone has their own, they add their own thing, and it becomes what they got. It's good, it's red, and, again, it does it's job. To me, the sauce isn't the star, but it's the strong supporting actor that needs to be there or it's just not the same. Very important that this sauce is smooth and more viscous than the other thick sauces. More fluid = more bread absorption. Science baby. The chicken is as big as my head. It's breaded nicely so that when it's cooked everything stays on, and the chicken is soft and not dry, which is such a common killer for a sandwheech like this. It's integral to this art project, and there's a clear reason why I order this over the veal. I love chicken, and nothing hits the spot than a breaded chicken cutlet sandwich. Simple as that. You can fuck with your own toppings, but I'm a simple man. Cheese mushrooms hot peppers. The end.

Taste better than it looks. Trust me!

I lived in Toronto for 19 years, but only discovered California Sandwiches recently. Oh how I've missed out all these years! For those who don't know, California Sandwiches is known for their veal sandwich. I must admit, it's the real deal. It's a pretty damn good sandwich and it's the only thing I have ordered from California Sandwiches since. The veal cutlet is perfectly fried, retaining its external crispy texture while locking in the moisture and juiciness of the veal. The kaiser bun is not fancy, but soft, freshly baked and compliments the breaded veal nicely In my opinion, the marinara sauce makes the sandwich and brings all its individual components together. It's well-seasoned, slightly spicy, sweet and tangy. I order mine extra-spicy and find the heat pretty mild, so I wouldn't be too afraid to spice things up. You can also order additional toppings for $1 extra. I like my sandwich with mushrooms and sweet peppers. Yum! I'm getting hungry just thinking about the sandwich. For those who are opposed to eating young cattle, I've heard that their chicken and eggplant sandwiches are just as good. While Toronto may not be known for one single food item, the Italian Veal Sandwich from California Sandwiches certainly deserves a special mention.

Veal Lasagna: Literally love this lasagna! It's to die for meaty, warm, chewy, saucey. Literally reminds me of my childhood when I'd bother mama lee to make her famous lasagna instead of Asian food California sandwiches also gives you a BIGGGGG portion of lasagna which is always awesome Total recommendation for anyone craving lasagna or hitting up California sandwiches. Also recommend their meat ball or onion rings with this! Chicken Sandwich + Onion Ring: The chicken sandwich was so packed that I was so full from half a sandwich already! I ordered this because I mean.... Come on..... their name has the word sandwiches, so I'm figuring their sandwiches would be on point well I think I ordered the wrong meat, because although the chicken was okay, the veal was better! definitely recommend the VEAL sandwich AND THEIR ONION RINGS! Omfffbbb!! Their onion rings are to die for! I hate onions, and I love these! The onion cuts aren't too thick but also ain't too thin, there's no onion aftertaste, and the outside part of the onion ring was so crunchy but breaks off easily like so much yes

Its close to me and I love me a good italian sandwich. I have been visiting the Chesswood location for over 15 years and I love that stuff- however this location let me down and I tell you why: The place has everything going for it- amazing building - lots of parking- lots of seating- tv screens and a bar. This is California sandwich showing off that they made it. They even have an amazing gelato bar. What let me down was the actual sandwich- i was going to give my benefit of the doubt because I ordered take out and I thought the bun was effected by that. The bun was not good- not toasted well and soggy. Bun aside -My chicken cutlet was not done properly as the breaded portion was falling off the chicken making my sandwich incredibly hard to eat. It was still good- but not as good the chesswood location.

Eggplant lasagna

Since the lockdown in March 2020, I've been a weekly patron at California Sandwiches' Dufferin & Castlefield location. Aside from their famous Italian sandwiches, they have some delicious weekday lunchtime entrees. My absolute favourite is their eggplant lasagna which is a regular item that often sells out early. There are staples like the lasagnas and they have additional items that change each day like vegetables, different pastas, chicken & fish. It's a well-run, organized business with pleasant staff & good food.

I literally have nothing to say bad about this place, because that is how much I love their food. The menu is huge with so many varieties of subs/sandwiches to choose from, truly all of them are the best. The staff is so kind and are very welcoming, they allow you to modify the sandwich in case there is anything you don't want on it. There is also a lot of seating for you to come in and eat as well, incase you did not want to take out. Now onto the sandwiches! I kid you not, the bread here is the most softest, fresh bread which also does not get soggy with all the toppings/sauces that get put on it. And then all the toppings that get added are super fresh. These sandwiches truly are addicting but also worth the money! I will always go back for the Chef's Choice sub which comes with: Grilled Chicken Strips, Avocado, Tomato, Hot Pepper, Fresh Onion, Olives, Crispy Onion, Pesto Sauce & Grandma's Homemade Hot Sauce. I truly truly recommend this off their menu if you are looking for something you want to keep coming back for. 10/10 Recommend!!!

It blends a traditional Italian deli style with a modern downtown vibe and is known for fresh panini made with quality meats and ingredients, many imported from Italy. We tried their "Il Padrino" and "Capricciosa" panini, and both stood out with crispy fresh bread and a great balance of mortadella, prosciutto, salami, cheese, veggies, and sauces. The combination of fresh bread, curated deli meats, and flavorful sauces gives each sandwich a really nice touch. Besides sandwiches, they also carry Italian-style groceries like pasta, cheeses, desserts, and drinks, which makes the visit feel like a quick trip to a small Italian market. They have a variety of panini style sandwiches with a fridge/freezer of imported items such as frozen meals, meats, dried and spreads, sauces, cake slices and gelato! All the sandwiches sound delicious! Hard to choose! I went with the Alla Romana $16 (Prosciutto from Abruzzo Italy, Semi-dried cherry tomatoes, Balsamic glaze, Fior di Latte). The bread was crusty & warm - all quality ingredients!! The prosciutto & other topping were plentiful. Great flavours. Fresh! You can tell it was made with care. I was surprised at how big the sandwich was. It was cut in two & placed in a take away container which travelled well. The sandwich was still intact and perfect when I got home. The bread has a good crust but was soft inside to be a good compliment for the filling! I did get a piece of tiramisu & a small single serve cup of gelato from the fridge/freezer to be tried later!! I am a big fan of sandwiches with quality great & quality filling and this checks off the boxes. Staff was friendly and the sandwich is a good value given the top quality ingredients. Opened in Feb 2025, the sandwich shop is set to expand opening a second location near Dundas and Ossington sometime this year. They are open daily from 11am to 5pm where you can pre-order off Ambassador for pick up or opt for delivery with Ubereats. When Ariete E Toro first opened last year, I recall seeing the long lines as it became super popular. Fast forward to a year later, I finally tried Ariete E Toro recently. The storefront is on a side street off of Yonge St. where it is take out only. They do have a bench near the window/entrance of the store but usually it's utilized by people waiting for their sandwiches. In the summer though, they have a small patio in front of the shop with some tables and chairs. Menu wise, Ariete E Toro has a variety of sandwiches with ingredients that work well together. You are also able to build your own sandwich if you'd like. They also have beverages like soda and water as well. The store boasts that all their ingredients are high quality. An average price of a sandwich is around $17. I decided to pre-order 2 sandwiches for pick up. These are the two sandwiches I got: - Enzo (mortadella di bologna, pistachio pesto, stracciatella cheese, chopped pistachio, lemon and basil oil). - Rogo Rogo (prosciutto cotto, 'nduja cream, smoked provolone, caramelized onion, arugula, and brown butter vinaigrette) Entering the store to pick up my order, staff were amidst completing my sandwiches. There was already a regular there chatting with staff. Service was quick. My sandwiches were packed and I had half of each at home. The size of the sandwich was pretty big! I could only finish 3/4th of the sandwich. Both the Enzo and the Rogo Rogo were tasty but the Enzo stole the show. The moist bread with the mortadella where the pistachio pesto and hint of stracciatella cheese along with a slight crunch from the chopped pistachio made for a perfect sandwich (I do prefer the bread a bit harder and crunchier though but the texture of this one was still good). I was sharing the sandwiches with my partner and as he opened the packaging he noticed a piece of hair in the sandwich. I would have given a higher rating on Yelp but finding someone else's hair in your food is off-putting. I do hope that if I return next time (either to this location or to their new location near Ossington/Dundas) that we won't find any surprises in our food. Overall, delicious sandwiches in Midtown Toronto, however, we did find a piece of hair in our sandwiches which.... kind of makes me hesitant to return. **Update** - I wrote a review on Google where the owner personally asked me to email them to rectify the situation with the piece of hair found in my sandwich. The owner apologized and stated that he was actually the one who personally made my sandwich that day (sliced the deli meat, etc.). He also made sure that he would speak with the bread manufacturer to make sure that they were aware of the situation as it may have come from the bread as well. He also gave me a refund for one sandwich as well as a $25 credit for if I wanted to give the sandwich spot another chance (the sandwich is too good to not go back!). That is what I call great customer service - making sure that an apology was given and that customers are happy. Would happily return again for their tasty sandwiches!!

Both of them tasted amazing; the bread was crunchy and every bite was full of flavour. I loved the combination of black olive pesto, greens and provolone cheese in Quello Forte. As for Il Re, the combination of 3 cold cuts, Provolone Crema, roasted garlic and olive salad had created a perfect taste. Definitely worth every calorie. Lol
