Decided to say basta to the stay at home order so I went to a sandwich joint that not only brings back memories from nearly two decades ago, but serves up a delicious Spicy treat. I got the Spicy sausage with cheese and mushrooms, and I do not regret the expense. Essentially I deemed my nutrition a necessity and selected this restaurant as the place to nourish my self. They are doing a great job of enforcing distancing, the place which had a packed lot was dead inside, yet they were still busy with customers coming and going. One of the best Italian sandwich restaurants in the city, with premium choices to add to your sandwich, their veal, Mangia fantastico! I get mushrooms, cheese, and make it hot with the peppers. Oh, and extra sauce please. This is the key. I want my bread soggy and steamy. I want the thing to turn into a gooey mess with the cheese pull and the sauce on the back of my hand. Let me explain why this makes sense. The bread is extremely key, because if you have some bitch white bread then it soaks and completely falls apart. This is a nonna approved Italian bun, reinforced with gluten and whatever shit so that it can be the perfect structural vessel. Strong foundation, I approve. Next is the sauce. I'm not going to sit here and try and dissect someone's tomato sauce. Everyone has their own, they add their own thing, and it becomes what they got. It's good, it's red, and, again, it does it's job. To me, the sauce isn't the star, but it's the strong supporting actor that needs to be there or it's just not the same. Very important that this sauce is smooth and more viscous than the other thick sauces. More fluid = more bread absorption. Science baby. The chicken is as big as my head. It's breaded nicely so that when it's cooked everything stays on, and the chicken is soft and not dry, which is such a common killer for a sandwheech like this. For those who don't know, California Sandwiches is known for their veal sandwich. I must admit, it's the real deal. It's a pretty damn good sandwich and it's the only thing I have ordered from California Sandwiches since. The veal cutlet is perfectly fried, retaining its external crispy texture while locking in the moisture and juiciness of the veal. The kaiser bun is not fancy, but soft, freshly baked and compliments the breaded veal nicely In my opinion, the marinara sauce makes the sandwich and brings all its individual components together. It's well-seasoned, slightly spicy, sweet and tangy. I order mine extra-spicy and find the heat pretty mild, so I wouldn't be too afraid to spice things up. You can also order additional toppings for $1 extra. I like my sandwich with mushrooms and sweet peppers. Yum! I'm getting hungry just thinking about the sandwich. For those who are opposed to eating young cattle, I've heard that their chicken and eggplant sandwiches are just as good. My coworkers and I often venture over to California Sandwiches for lunch, as it is fast and the food is quite good. I have to admit, I've only had their sandwiches a couple of times and I'm not a big fan. I think it was due to having them brought in for a work lunch and they were soggy by the time I unwrapped them. I'm sure I'll give them another chance at some point, but it's the rest of the food that keeps me going back. When you walk in, it's a bit confusing if you've never been before because there is no indication of a line, well, not in the way you expect. Most places with this format at least have an "order here" or similar sign, but no such luck here. You basically have to get the attention of someone behind the counter to place your order; nobody seems to care who got there first. The prices are based the number of items you order, and are pretty reasonable. My favourite meal so far was a baked salmon with a spinach salad, but sadly the salmon is not a regular menu item. Just as well, or I'd be there all the time! Lots of the food is very carb-heavy (pasta, potatoes, etc.) but they sometimes have grilled chicken breast that I will pair with steamed/roasted vegetables or one of the five salad options they have. Now that I've got the swing of things, I've usually got my food within 5 minutes of arriving, which works well on a lunch break from work. We eat there at least every other week, sometimes every week. Oh, just a tip: the parking lot fills up very quickly, so try to get there early if you're driving. They've got a parking attendant who does a great job of keeping things organized, so keep an eye out for him to direct you to the next open spot. read more

At 2pm on a Friday the restaurant was busy, not rammed...but the little parking lot was still a bit of a cluster. With limited space for cars trying to move in both directions, and cars sitting and waiting for spots to open up, it gets a little hairy in there. And there was an ornery fellow shouting at cars as he tried to direct traffic, getting more frustrated by the minute and even swearing at times. I found the spectacle slightly amusing. I have been visiting the Chesswood location for over 15 years and I love that stuff- however this location let me down and I tell you why: The place has everything going for it- amazing building - lots of parking- lots of seating- tv screens and a bar. This is California sandwich showing off that they made it. They even have an amazing gelato bar. What let me down was the actual sandwich- i was going to give my benefit of the doubt because I ordered take out and I thought the bun was effected by that. Aside from their famous Italian sandwiches, they have some delicious weekday lunchtime entrees. My absolute favourite is their eggplant lasagna which is a regular item that often sells out early. There are staples like the lasagnas and they have additional items that change each day like vegetables, different pastas, chicken & fish. It's been a long time since I came to California sandwiches but I tried it after a 5+ year gap and it was not what I remembered it to be. I got the veal sandwich and the meat was pounded to holy hell. It was also chewy and tough. The flavour of the cheese and mushroom (extra $) did not come through. The breading on the meat was pretty good though but what was not good was the bread. Since the place was pretty busy, all you see on people's plates were ripped up pieces of bread to be thrown away - and with good reason too. The bread was tough, like, stale bread that you microwaved just to eat. I had the pleasure of hearing someone I know harp about this place. I was intrigued, but never went... until today. There's a parking lot on site, which is convenient. With two entrances, I can see the potential 'traffic' that could take place here. Just review what your Driving Instructor taught you so many years ago and you should be good. From the outside it looks meh. The gross looking homes in this area can be quite misleading. On the inside, it's super clean. The building looks quite new. On my first trip to the register, I ordered the sweet mini chicken sandwich w cheese and grilled vegetables. Breaded chicken in an Italian bun is effin' delicious. The tomato sauce adds juicy deliciousness to the sandwich. Cheese was provolone and was melted. I'm on a Lifestyle Change Journey so I tried to control myself, but ... I needed more! On my second trip, I got the exact same order, but spicy. It was way too hot for me. I was sweating profusely and the Dining Companions said that my face was getting pretty red. In short, if spicy isn't your thing, stick w the sweet. It's cafeteria style so once your order is ready, you take your tray and find a place to sit. Cash only. There's an ATM on site, but it's one of those machines that charges your month's salary and your first child in fees. Not as good as the location on Claremont, but still a solid place to get a good chicken sandwich. The place is huge and really modern, pretty much the opposite of the original location. The food comes quickly, the guy at the counter is really friendly, and they sell gelato! You order from the counter and they call out your number when it's ready. The chicken sandwiches are huge and delicious. They use the same hot peppers as the Claremont location, which is one of my favourite things about California Sandwiches. There's a little patio outside, but it's right on a gross street with lots of cars, so it's not really ideal. If I'm in the area, I'll check them out again. read more

I have been enjoying Californian Sandwiches since it opened in the grocery store on clinton street just north of dundas. I lived on manning. I said that I would never go back to the dufferin location ( north of eglinton) after my one and only time there yrs ago. Instead of a slice of cheese on my sandwich, I got a small chunk. I could not give it back as I took the sandwich home. Yesterday ( Nov 22/22 ) I was going to a restaurant with friends on dufferin st. It was closed on Tuesdays. Someone suggested we go for a sandwich at California, as we were right near their location on dufferin. We sat in. I ordered a hot veal and a small container of olives. The veal had no peppers at all. I did not take it back as I had taken a bit. The top of the bun was cut perfectly in half, the bottom had an inch wide on one side and the rest on the other. I think it was not a top and bottom match. The bun was fresh. The breading came off all the veal slices that was in the sandwich. The olives were the same olives that all the location serve except these looked good but were like mush when you bit into them. I was very disappointed. My friend also had no hot peppers on his sandwich. He is a big eater and ordered a second and paid for extra hot peppers. NOTHING, no peppers again. As we left I told the manager my story. no reaction, she just had a sad face. Do not go to this location. I have gone to Lillian at Chesswood and Sheppard, I have eaten at the location on York Mills between Leslie and Don Mills and I also go to the original location on Clinton Street. I have had hundreds on california sandwiches over my 74 years. They have always been great, except for what you get at the dufferin location. This time I am positive that I will never frequent the dufferin location again. This location is huge, clean, very nice with a big area for sitting, cold beer ready to down with your delicious breaded veal sandwich.... just good times all around. I like mine spicy with sweet peppers and mushrooms but I can't imagine a combo that doesn't kick ass here. Service is fast and efficient. I don't believe they have interac though, I didn't see a machine and ended up paying with cash, but I didn't ask either so beware. Let's have a little comparison, shall we? 244 Claremont Street 2474 Dufferin St. a giant stack of eggplant a single layer, comprised of two pieces stacked high, side by side, does not fill the bun sweet or hot sauce well seasoned the sauce is red. No other discernible qualities cheese is included if you want cheese, you pay 2 satisfying meals in 1 sandwich satisfaction is to be found elsewhere. Sure, the Dufferin St. location is larger, more modern, and has three fountains inside, but would you rather eat at the place they put all the love and effort into the cooking, or where they care about the appearance of the dining room. By far the worst California's I've ever been to.The lady at the cash register was very rude and they don't even have most of the items on their menu at seven they stop making pasta at two unlike the other restaurants . Something was different about this sandwich, there was only one piece of veal in the sandwich. 16 single veal sandwiches she had bought were like this. She bought them at this location. I thought this had to be a fluke. So, today for lunch I went to this location and ordered my usual, 1 hot double veal with cheese and onion and a crush to drink. The double was only two pieces of veal which is less than a single at any other location. My family's been eating at California Sandwiches since before my nannos time. I was first introduced to California Sandwiches about 14 years ago in Little Italy of TO and had no idea they expanded this much. When I saw this place I had to pop in get something. I can't remember if the Little Italy place had sides way back when but when I saw all they had to offer, I was blown away. It was quite a selection but I'm here for the sandwich. I ended up getting a hot veal just like I did when I was a wee lad. Back then my mommy ordered for me :) so I don't know if there were all these toppings to add way back but like a rookie I screwed up my order. Uhmm.... I suppose I will get cheese with it and ermm....... Mushrooms and hot peppers? Yeah, that sound like enough. Oh and an OJ. The sandwich looked exactly how I remembered.... Big and sloppy. Now I'm excited. Half way through the first have of the sandwich, I realize the thing isn't hot like I remember. In fact it's much hotter.... That or I've become a bit of a wuss. I started getting the sweats which was brutal but I powered through that and demolished the whole thing because it was delicious. I didn't really notice the cheese or what it did for the sandwich as it was over powered by the raging heat and other than the given sloppiness, the sandwich more or less held up the entire time despite the odd patch of some sogginess. I think I've also had the sausage and chicken when I was younger and they too were delicious.. Next time I come here I'm going to attempt to get a side dish but who knows.
