    California Screamin'
    Jeannette L.

Today I was invited to have lunch with work colleagues at California Tortilla. This was a great choice because service was good, food was fresh, and there was ample seating. The four of us sat at one of the tables (they also have booths inside). It was pretty busy and there was another large group dining in also. Occasionally, people would drop in for takeout, as well. I ordered a California Screamin' bowl and made it a fresh deal with a side of chips and fountain drink. I thought it was pretty tasty; the queso sauce was really good. The gimmick here is the 'Wall of Flame' 75 different hot sauces. The sauces are rated by heat factor. I thought it was neat to be able to try different kinds that I'm not familiar with. Today I tried the WUJU original hot sauce "sweet heat" (very good!) I'd never heard of California Tortilla before. Today I learned it's a regional chain with locations in PA, MD, DC, VA, WV, SC, KA, and one lone restaurant in Stamford, CT. Oh, and now NJ. The Sicklerville location is one of the two California Tortilla eateries in New Jersey. I had a good experience there today, but I am curious to see some of the low ratings last month. I thought service was very good when I went, but that perhaps that's because I went during lunch rush. I could see coming back here again.

I really like coming here. The food is always good, and fresh, however today was not pleasant. It took over 20 min to get my food. Fast casual should be faster. There weren't even that many people there. Crazy

    Tornado screamin something

This is a bootleg chipotle. Its a couple dollars cheaper but thats because theres no damn meat in it. I ordered the new tornado burrito with the screamin sauce but the only spicy was the jalapeno. If you are hungry for a burrito and dont feel like driving to chipotle, this is a last resort.

If we could give this a zero star rating we would. The food looked promising the marketing made it seem fresh and on par with Chipotle and Moe's so we were excited to see who would come up on top. Sadly this jawn is at the bottom of the barrel and their taco neighbors across the way (The one with the Bell) puts this food order to shame. At a whopping $41 give or take a few pennies-4 street tacos; one burrito; one kids cheese quesadilla; one side of chips and nacho cheese fresh out of the can and one side of chips and what appeared to be guacamole and more or less tasted of bland baby food and the side of rice and black beans which was conveniently left out of our pick up order bag...you can rest assured we will not be returning anytime soon. If the overall taste of fish is something you're after or the lack of seasoning and spices in of all things 'fresh Mex' is your bag-by all means rape your wallet here. So disappointing. Really hoped for a better outcome. Sad. Just sad. Looks like we're ordering a pizza now for dinner. Ugh.

As a Californian in New Jersey, I absolutely had to give "California Tortilla" a try. This place is cute and decent, but I'm not sure it's worthy of bearing the name of California in its name. I had the fajitas with steak & chicken. The 2 skinny strips of steak were very chewy and grisly, and the 2 strips of chicken were dry and not very flavorful. The side rice was very dry, and the black beans were undercooked. The flour tortilla was the saving grace, and I wish they had given me more of them. The sauce wall with many different choices of sauces and a guidebook is innovative. This place isn't terrible, but honestly, I would really rather go to that other chain fast-fresh burrito place instead (and pray I don't get food poisoning :b).

So I received a card in the mail to try one of their chef's specials for free...Needless to say I was surprised at the food...I ordered a fish, beans, cheese and spinach tortilla and I took it for take out.. When I got the food home....Needless to say it was awesome! !! The flavors and the fish is what had me sold...plus I love spinach.... I don't do too many chain restaurants but I will definitely be back to this one

The pros: the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. I think the franchise owner helped us out and as first timers that left a great impression. My fiancée went a second time and said the same. They have a wall full of hot sauces which I'm sure could meet any hot sauce fanatics needs. Food seemed fresh and facility was very clean. The cons:the food lacked flavor in my opinion and seemed a little odd. I ordered a salad and found it disappointing. Again everything fresh though, it had big tomato wedges instead of more of a pico de gallo feel which would be ideal for a Mexican salad. The dressing really had no flavor.

Blackened fish bowl burrito with guacamole and "How Big Is Your Stinger" hot sauce.....mmmm spice boy!

I love trying new restaurants and have had this place on my radar for a while…read more We decided on a whim to try them on a Saturday night in the summer. We got right in with no wait. There was live music in the main dining room consisting of one singer singing Latin music. We were each given a tablet with the menu, which was pretty awesome. It took us a long time to decide what we wanted because we were enthralled by the extensive menu with all of the photos on the tablet. I decided to order a cocktail and my husband got the horchata while my mom got an unsweetened iced tea. They have a full bar with a ton of specialty drinks. My drink arrived with flower petals adorned to the side of the glass. We also received complimentary chips with salsa and salsa verde. As an appetizer we decided to do the taquitos. I love taquitos so I was excited, and the presentation was great. However when we bit into them we noticed they were just pieces of chicken breast rolled in tortillas and fried. No seasoning. No cheese, nothing mixed in. I was surprised. The taquitos I've had in the past are made with shredded chicken and potatoes with cheese. These were lacking flavor and dry. I wanted to love them so much but I just couldn't. For our entrees, I did the chimichanga mixto which was a chicken and beef chimichanga. They were on the smaller side but plenty for one person. The filling was mixed with salsa but again felt bland. They were serviced with a side of rice. My mom got the pina loka, which was grilled shrimp, chicken, and steak with onions and peppers inside a pineapple. Hers was very good. My husband got the La Jeño mix which had chicken shrimp and steak with cheese sauce, rice, and veggies. The flavor of his was pretty good as well. We skipped dessert, but the menu was extensive with all your Mexican favorites plus items like chicken parm. They also have a full breakfast menu. The music was very loud for the small dining area if you wanted to have a conversation, but the singer was doing his thing. We made sure to tip him on our way out. The servers checked on us frequently and service overall was good, I just wish the food wowed us more because I so wanted this to be our new fave.

Being our first time, we wanted to try several things, so we ordered guacamole and chips, chicken tacos (3 per order), chorizo tacos (3 per), beef birria tacos (3 per), and a side of rice and beans. The chorizo was very nice and mild - not too spicy. Everything was prepared fresh and served hot. Just delicious!!! The staff is super friendly and the place very clean and bright with about six tables. I'd highly recommend. This is usually my go to platter at any Mexican restaurant but this time I feel like I didn't make the right choice. The meat was dry and hard, the rice was pretty good and the beans were salty. The platter does come with handmade tortillas which were pretty good. The red salsa was also good but the green not so much it was pretty watery.

Both enchilada entrees had chicken in them when they were supposed to be cheese only - so naturally we called to get a refund due to the fact that we drove 35min to the restaurant based on the recommendation. we get the food back home and my mother in law takes a bite and finds chicken. so my fiance checks hers - sure enough, chicken in that one. She has been vegetarian for almost 13 years now. We call them to try to get it sorted out and politely explain that we received food that we did not order and that we would like a refund for the two entrees that were wrong. The woman who answered the phone told us that they're happy to exchange the meals for the correct ones - and at this point we're disappointed enough to not want to drive back so we again ask for a refund. They tell us they're not sure they can do that so we ask for a manager - the manager proceeds to talk over us and raises his voice and tells us "bring the food back and we'll give you a new meal" and hangs up on us. We will absolutely never be ordering from or eating at this establishment ever again and I suggest if you're vegan or vegetarian - you don't either, because they don't give half a shit about you.
