I pass this restaurant relatively often and have been nervous to try. Will it be authentic? Will it be worth the money? Is it just another "Mexican restaurant with microwaved cuisine? The usual questions, I suppose. I can answer "Yes" to the first two questions. I ordered the Enchiladas de Mole and a Chicharron Taco. I was wildly impressed. The restaurant was not packed but it seemed to be occupied by the locals. The mole was probably some of the best I have had in a long, long time--which says a lot, since I have had some really outstanding mole. The taco was fresh, and I definitely could've ordered more than 1. My critiques would center the chips that come to the table. The first round weren't as fresh as the second. Also, the portion was pretty mediocre. That being said: the salsas that accompanied the chips were impressive. They will bring you more chips if requested, but I will have to assume they only provide you with 10 because they are made fresh and they don't want to waste--I get it, but still! The chicharron taco was documented as being crispy but mine was not. It might've been the same that reduced the crispiness, but I will argue that it was not likely crispy at any time. Please note: this did not take away from the flavor. I would, however, like the food to match the description. The service was great. The waitress was attentive, pleasant, and patient. The 1 and 2 stars reviews are very inaccurate in my opinion. We both enjoyed our light lunch here the other day, so much so that we will return again for lunch or dinner. We sampled the complimentary chips, homemade blue and yellow corn that were topped with very good refried beans and some queso. These were served with red and green salsas, both good but be careful with the green, a tad bit spicy. Next up were the super nachos, same chips but with more cheese, tomato, jalapeño and freshly gridled diced chicken. These were nacho Americanized nachos, ingredients were judiciously applied and chips remained crunchy throughout. Our side order of fresh guac went perfectly with them, and was delicious in taste and cost ($3.50) Next up were 2 tacos, al pastor and bistek. These can be Americanized but why would you, mine were topped with modest onion and cilantro. Both of the meats were nicely seasoned, copious and completely tender. I would gladly order either again, but if forced to pick would choose the al pastor with its spicier flavor. With a few other interesting taco choices, not to mention other menu items, more visits are forthcoming. The reviewers who mentioned service as being cold were not far off. But I agree with those who have cited a slight language barrier as the probable cause. And certainly nothing to detract from your enjoyment of the food here. Skip the chain restaurants who try to approximate Mexican cuisine, and give El Tequila a try, and don't forget to bring your own Tequila or cerveza. read more

Yelper's have failed me again when it comes to jersey dining. Stopped by to grab some takeout to see if they are deserving of the high rating. As you can see from my rating, it does not. I ordered the cactus salad and the chicken chimichanga. Both were nothing to rave about. I would have been better off at Panchero's. I did not like the cactus salad at all. The cactus pieces were way too large and the dressing just tasted like oil and vinegar. I took a bite and threw it out. The chimichanga's were alright. Anything fried and drowned in cheese can be good. The rice was bland and the pico was too salty. read more

I don't understand how this place got great reviews. It was expensive, Food was not good. Chicken In quesadilla was dry and not fresh. Chips and salsa $9.00 was a green sauce and red sauce nothing like I've ever seen with chips and salsa. Guacamole seemed cut with something like mayonnaise making it kinda watered down. Enchiladas had a hair in them. I called to complain specifically about not getting salsa and I was told that the green sauce and red sauce in tiny plastic dipping container was the salsa. I would equate their "salsa" to the mild sauce that comes in packets from Taco Bell. No way I would ever consider that salsa. The person I spoke to had no response, not even an apology when I mentioned the other things wrong with my meals. I highly recommend finding any number of other places to eat nearby. read more

This spot was phenomenal !!!!! We enjoyed the pork and chorizo tacos and the meat was to die for !!! I was blown away by the pork and I really enjoyed the limes on the side for the extra fresh burst of flavor. The guac and chips was so fresh they even left the avocado pit in the dip! A small Mexican restaurant. Very authentic chips (not your usual Tostitos taste but still yummy). The guac is delish - wow. I ordered a 'tub' of it for only $8 for my son's party. Everyone went wild for it!!! The first time I went there my meal was good and big but had some unidentifiable cheese on it - it was actually pretty good though. I'm not a flan fan but the cute little waitress gave it to us free since I was referred by someone. The next two times (haha!) I had a beef burrifto - yummy and then the last time I found my new 'go to' dish - a chicken chimichanga w/ a cream cheese sauce - holy good God good!!!!!!!!!! Don't expect a margarita here. Despite their name, they don't serve alcohol. Their salsa is tasty but very thin. They served a very small plate of nachos to start. Our family of four basically had 2 small chips each. I had the enchalada rojas and my wife had the vegetarian burito. I didn't care for mine. The refried beans were watery. Excellent Mexican food! Reminds me of home! I had a sample of four of the tacos: Al Pastor (excellent, with little bits of pineapple), Chorizo (very savory, not spicy), Carnitas (yum!) and Chicharrones (very good) My wife had the Tres Amigos enchiladas, which were excellent! The red beef enchilada has just the right amount of kick. The green chicken enchilada was tangy, and the cheese enchilada was a nice complement to the other two. The ultimate test of a Mexican place to me is the rice, and this place passed with flying colors. The rice is light and not at all crunchy, and reminiscent of my mom's cooking (but not as good). My daughter ordered the mole enchiladas, and was disappointed that they were too sweet. In my experience, mole is usually sweet, which is why I don't care for it. I will make sure to come back here any time I am in the area, especially since the prices are very reasonable. Much better value than Chipotle or Moe's for superior food! read more

This authentic restaurant is a great find! The guacamole is some of the best I've ever had. I have gotten carne asada twice which is flavorful (although somewhat grizzly in parts) with nice prices of grilled pepper, scallion, and cactus on it. This restaurant is more than reasonably priced and will make you feel like you're in Central America (coming from a reviewer who has spent a great deal of time there). Oh, and BYOB never hurts. The reason I'm giving the three stars is because when you order a sombrero salad it's more of the leaves than the meat and avocado. Keep in mind there is no dressing, so it's very bland. The continuous search for good, authentic Mexican cuisine brings us here today. Mexican food, to me, can be extremely simple but fresh ingredients is what separates the good from the best. The inside of the restaurant has the look and feel like you're in your abuela's kitchen. The ambience boasts very authentic Mexican colors and relics hanging on the walls. There is a soccer game playing loudly in the background on Univision, I'm more than okay with this because I am a huge soccer fan. We are met with a very nice Mexican woman as our server, she brought us out chips and salsa after we ordered. The chips were thick and crispy, probably fried corn tortillas. They were topped with a touch of refried beans and some Mexican queso fresco cheese. A red salsa and green salsa came out with the chips, the red was a thinner take on salsa, very small onion pieces and a tad on the milder side, good flavor. The green salsa was delicious, seems like a very balanced mix of jalapenos, cilantro and tomatillo. I really enjoyed this salsa. I ordered the sombrero salad and my wife ordered vegetable quesadillas. The salad presentation was really nice. Sliced, juicy chicken medallions on top with carrots, radish and black olives covered the very impressive tortilla shell. Shredder cheddar I was never asked what dressing I wanted and I soon came to notice the dressing was already mixed into the lettuce. I wasn't 100% sure what it was until the end but it seemed like a lime vinaigrette, very unique and savory. I think this was probably the best Mexican I've had in this area and it was just a salad, I think it's saying a lot. I am looking forward to my next trip. read more

I'm from California, and I love trying places on the east coast to see how they compare. This one does not disappoint in the least. Good salsa is like the interview for me, and it was terrific! The red was mild and flavorful and the green was more tart and a bit spicier but still just a medium on the spice scale overall. I had the mole enchiladas and my husband had the Enchiladas de Tres Amigos. So very good! Even the rice and beans are great! We both cleared our plates! The enchiladas were delicious and so was moms tilapia. The burrito was okay and the chips they give had cold refried beans on top. Although the food was pretty good and the prices were adorable, their service was mediocre at best. The waitress wouldn't speak and then just stared at us. Idk she's young- we'll chalk it up to that. Wow, my fellow yelpers really let me down on this one. I was looking for authenic Mexican food close to home but this place only disappointed. Upon arrival, I asked if there were any flavored waters (a Mexican staple...agua de horchata) to find out there were none offered. Strike one. We were served authentic chips with beans however the salsas were watery and lacked flavor and spice. Strike 2. My husband, born and raised in Mexico, and I ordered the fajitas mixta and tacos al pastor and chorizo. When our food arrived, after a long wait, the fajitas came covered in cheese which the menu didn't state and is very unusual for fajitas. Also, the chicken was white and disintegrated in your mouth. The peppers were well cooked. When I saw my tacos, I noticed instead of a taco with chorizo I had a taco with bistec. I let the waitress know and she brought me a taco with what they tried to pass off as chorizo. Instead of chorizo, this was brown greasy italian sausage. I couldn't even eat it. Strike 3. Very overrated BYOB. I am pretty shocked about how high the reviews are for this place. The food was just simply not good. I tried almost ever one or their tacos (which others have noted, are small), and all of them were dry, even the chorizo was dry which I didn't think was possible. The pork and pineapple was over cooked and barely had any pineapple, I couldn't really taste the difference between it and the regular pork taco. Someone got the Texas fajitas nachos, which were also pretty bad. We got take out, and the service was slow. It took almost twice as long for the food to be prepared than we were told that it would. The person at the counter seemed like she did not want to be there, and didn't want us to be there. Nowhere near the best in the region, I'll never go back, go to La Esperanza instead. read more

I was highly skeptical walking into El Tequila tonight. At 7pm on a Saturday, my girlfriend and I were one of only two parties in the restaurant. That's a huge red flag, right? But you see my 4/5 star rating, so clearly my low expectations were exceeded. Let's break this down: It had a mom and pop vibe... felt like a pizza place that was converted into a Mexican joint. BUT, it was clean, and nicely decorated. Mariachi music added some pleasant ambiance. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly, but not off-putting either. Service was prompt and responsive. At this point, we're talking 2.5 stars... The food, however, was the thing that TOTALLY won me over. We shared tacos, quesadillas, a taco salad, and a burrito. Every item tasted fresh and home-made. The sauces were flavorful and spicy. Even the pre-entree tortilla chips stood out -- much more enjoyable than the cardboard salt vehicles you get at the chain restaurants. My girlfriend and I made several comments to each other about how good everything tasted, and how we couldn't believe that the place was as empty as it was. Since I've never been to Mexico, I don't know if this place is completely "authentic," but it certainly FELT that way. Oh one last note: the prices were perfectly reasonable. We actually spent less than we planned. We will absolutely be back for more, and I can't wait! read more

If you are traveling on the thruway and looking for good Mexican food this is a great place to stop. It's an easy find off the exit AND the food was very good. The restaurant is clean, the menu is varied and I wholeheartedly disagree with my fellow helper who didn't like the food. The chips are great - not the typical out of the bag fare - and they are served with beans, sour cream and two types of salsa. We had enchiladas and the chimichanga (both chicken) and nothing was left on our plates! Food was fresh and the serving size is large. We will stop here again on our travels. read more

Went last night because I work nearby and yelp (you guys) said it was good, so I finally gave in. I was excited to see carnitas tacos on the menu, as my go-to mexican spot does not offer them. I ordered up 3 carnitas tacos and a tinga quesadilla, wife ordered the chicken enchiladas. Shortly after ordering the waitress brought me a bottled soda. This isnt a huge deal, it just amazes me that a restaurant in 2011 accepts credit cards but doesnt have a soda fountain. Then the waitress brought us a plate of chips and salsa. It was literally a dinner plate, and the chips appeared to be straight out of a bag, with a mysterious dark goup (beans?) squirt on top. The red salsa also looked and tasted like store brand crap straight out of the jar, which was really disappointing. These are the things that make mexican restaurants unique and special. Obviously, they dont care enough to make their own here. Then came our entrees... I had high hopes for these tacos, partly because I lust for carnitas, but mainly because they were priced at an unfathomable $2.50 each. Sadly, they were stingy in size, but more alarming were the numerous large chunks of fat I kept finding. I've had carnitas dozens of times before, but never prepared in such a lazy and thoughtless manner. The tinga quesadilla was strange, at best. I mean, its not that it was bad, it was just tough to chew. Bizarre, considering its pulled chicken and melted cheese. Wife liked her chicken enchiladas w/ green sauce, the only reason this place is 2 stars instead of 1. Not sure that I would come back, even if it were to try something different. For now, the quest for the best Mexican continues. As for the rest of you - Theres 2 bridges nearby that still connect NJ to Philadelphia. But I had given for hours and really wanted a drink. No margaritas. What? I was brought chips with bean slop and weird cheese on it with two kinds of sauce. Long View - We went there on Cinco de Mayo. That famous Mexican Holiday that prompts Americans to say,"Hey let's eat Mexican tonight" in the same way that Columbus Day might justify going out for Spaghetti. I had been here years ago and for some reason felt like it was time to come back. Probably because in this area of S.Jersey, most Mexican places are the standard Tex-Mex franchise fare. Many of the reviews speak of a just a few cars or patrons in the restaurant and while this would normally be true, being Cinco de Mayo, there were about 10 tables in play. With only one waitress, it was severely understaffed for what was obviously an unusual load. And yes, the waitress is a bit off-putting, but I think it's not a rudeness, more of a not being able to communicate well. The chips that come to the table, non gratis, are simple and probably more accurate to what your grandma puts out when people stop by mid-day unexpected. Decent enough, just not what hungry Americans expect (especially given the long wait time). Perhaps if we were all having an engaging conversation, rather than our face in our phones, mindlessly grabbing at the chips plate, then it wouldn't have been so woefully proportioned. The Cactus salad one of the better dishes, but I can't say how authentic, because I haven't had it enough places to judge it. Everything else was just OK enough that I can't remember 3 weeks later what we had. So there you have it. Cheap, decent, low priced Mexican food, like dropping in unexpectedly on folks that didn't know you were planning to eat there. I recently moved to the area and my fiance and I pass it almost every single day. We had been talking about going and trying it out and yesterday we finally did. I'm confused by the people who say there is "brown goop" on the chips. If you have ever eaten Mexican before you can obviously tell its refried beans and they're AMAZING. First, I am from Virginia so I do not get the whole BYOB thing, but how do you call your self El tequila and not serve alcohol. False advertising. What this place lacks in alcohol though, it more then makes up for with the food. My wife and I had the fajitas and they were outstanding. The chicken was an actual cooked chicken breast. The peppers and onions were cooked fresh and not over cooked, still had some crispness. Guacamole was very good as well. Service is one person for the whole restaurant.
