I have been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years, back when it was super small. I have never had a bad meal here. Recently, I was able to try the Birria tacos. It is a special so they don't always have them. They were outstanding! The burritos are good. The sopes are fantastic. I can't say enough good things. Flan is great. Staff is friendly and caring. Oooh, who knew that this little restaurant in a non-descript strip mall would be a surprise? We were headed down to the shore and decided to have dinner en route to avoid Friday traffic. Great little gem we stumbled upon. We arrived around 5:30 pm so it wasn't quite busy although the tables quickly filled up. Our complimentary chips and salsa arrived and the green salsa was banging! So tasty we asked for more when the main meal arrived. The carnitas platter was huge, plenty enough to share for two and we got two plates of warmed tortillas. Loved everything on that platter. My daughter thought the steak tacos were just ok. The steak was diced in small cubes and I think she was expecting slices of meat. All in all though this was a great meal out though. While all their tacos are delicious I prefer the al pastor or chorizo. Great combination of meat, onions and cilantro. Add the salsa from the tortilla chips and hot sauce. Delicious! This restaurant was not even on my radar until I saw it pop up on Yelp somehow. 4.5 stars, 83 reviews, close to home, great Mexican food and cheap? I bookmarked this place as fast I could move my finger! Parilla La Fogata is in a pretty sad strip mall on the White Horse pike very close to Route 73 in Berlin. There is not much going on in this strip mall except a Mexican grocery, a hair stylist, and a cell phone store. The restaurant itself is brightly colored and was full with mostly Latino customers on this chilly Saturday night in Mid November. I was relieved that our waitress was bilingual so I didn't have to use my rudimentary Spanish and butcher the language. Our waitress was really great and spent a lot of time with us and answered our questions. Ultimately we ordered 3 tacos, an enchilada main course, a chorizo sopa and this delicious pork and ham dish with avocado and pineapple. Everything tasted very fresh, authentic and although spicy was not overpowering. The fish tacos were especially good and had a nice grilled flavor. The entrée portions were very big and we took some home. For all of the above food two Mexican sodas, a coffee and very good Tres Leches cake our total was $50.00. Not too bad considering we over ordered, again. Tips - Cash ONLY, come prepared. Also the restaurant was cold on this chilly night, dress warm. I'm so happy my coworkers introduced me to this unassuming little joint because, not only is it two minutes from my office, but offers delicious, fresh food at a price that cannot even be believed. Our last staff lunch visit, 6 of us had food and drink for $49. Less than ten dollars a person for a lunch that was delicious and left me satiated for the remainder of the day? I mean really? REALLY! I recently had the tacos Al Pastor. Gotta be honest, the meat was a little dry. If I ordered them again, I'd definitely front the 50 cents to add cheese, because they were lacking some moisture. Hole in the wall Mexican joints do not get any better than this. We tried dining here for a weekday lunch over a month ago and was shut out due to a change in operating hours that was not mentioned on Yelp. But we were in the area on a warm December Saturday afternoon and decided to try again. This strip mall does not seem like a place you might want to eat at, no other restaurants here, and even the other businesses were lackluster. As we approached we noticed one empty table outside, went inside to discover no empty tables, and the eyes of all the Hispanic diners on us. We grabbed a few menus and asked the friendly waitress if we might take the table outside. She cheerfully said of course. I'll be honest, it was hard to anticipate a great meal while taking in the view and the noises of a humble strip mall parking lot, and the busy road it was situated on. We were starving and just decided to focus on the food. That turned out to be very easy to do. We knew guac was a must, and I wanted to sample at least one taco. Trish had a craving for fajitas so she suggested the shrimp option. So we ordered all of the above and within a few minutes were treated to complimentary chips with refried beans and queso blanco gracing them. They were great and even better when topped with salsa Fresca, pickled peppers and onions, or the red and green salsas that accompanied them. The guac arrived a few minutes later, with more of the homemade chips. It was plated very artistically and was as good as any guac I've ever had in a restaurant. Up next was the taco duo, 1 shrimp and 1 tilapia. They were both overstuffed with the protein and came garnished with a little lettuce and salsa Fresca and just a bit of crema. Both fillings were seasoned very nicely and served in the traditional 2 tortilla fashion. I was not expecting much from the fajitas. I used to be a fan in my early adulthood, but it has been many years since I've ordered them since. And certainly not at any place where more authentic fare could be found. These came out on the sizzling cast iron skillet but were probably the best I've ever tasted. Each shrimp had a nice sear on it, and there were about 12 nice sized ones. The rest of the dish is what you would expect, but each item was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and a slab of the queso blanco was also included. It was served with more corn tortillas than we could possibly eat, and a perfect Spanish rice. We left completely full and utterly happy with this meal. The service throughout was attentive and friendly. And it appeared that all the other diners were leaving as happy as we were. The only negative is the cash only policy, but at the pretty reasonable costs this isn't a deterrent. If ambiance is not a criteria for the enjoyment of great food for you, give this place a try.
