    Awesome Bathroom Sign!

It's pouring rain here on memorial day weekend in the Northern neck and we wanted to go have a few beers. Sitting out on the pier wasn't an option and a friend of mine told me about a brewery in Callao that had opened up about a year ago. We decided to check it out and were rewarded with excellent beer, friendly service, food trucks, and just what we desperately needed after having been cooped up for a year during the pandemic. The place was very busy and I am hopeful that they will continue to do very well. They had about 15 beers on tap with a very wide variety that anyone could find something that they liked.

Riding the IPA flight of beer. #8 was awesome.

Callao Brewing Co. offers a clean, comfortable, convenient location to enjoy a wide variety of 15 different draft beers. There are plenty of tables inside and out, comfortable leather couches, and space to stretch out. Tried a flight of IPA brews that were as different as they were delicious. My favorite was the #8 - This is the Way New England IPA. The Brews Wayne was dark and rich - and venturing off the IPA flight path, really liked the Harryhogan Hefeweizen and the Chickacoan Creme Ale. While ordering a second flight, a gentleman came in to fill a couple quart sized mason jars with his faves (hey, who says a growler needs to be fancy - it's all about the beer). Overall, a great addition to the neighborhood and a fun option for a Friday evening or a weekend afternoon. Now go support your local brew masters!

Roger, James and Susan are the salt of the earth. The brewery feels like a family and the beers are master craft.

Callao Brewery is this area's best kept secret. Beer is tasty and alcoholic seltzer is refreshing! A feel good place, great for meeting friends or for a night out in the country.

There wasn't much in Tappahannock that fit the bill, so we just decided to try this place. We were more than pleased with our choice. The somewhat drab and unimpressive exterior will fool you: This place is one of the most fun and inviting places you'll ever set foot. There's a respectable selection of beer, good pub food, a wonderful little bier garden, pinball machines(!), and some of the friendliest humans (both staff and patrons) you could ever hope to meet. If I went into specifics, this would be an unreadably long review. So if you yourself in the area, just take a chance on this place, and go. You'll love it. If you don't, I have to think that's on you.

We were here earlier than usual (10:30 am, don't judge me for drinking before noon!!!) and we're the only customers. It's uniquely located at a camp ground, but parking is a bit limited. The tasting room is small but has amble seating. There was a piano in the tasting room and no one was at the tasting room when we entered. My daughter who is a beginner pianist, wanted to play. Since there were no signs on the piano that forbid people touching, she went ahead and played. Then an older gentleman came in and told us in a stern tone that the piano is not for playing. He was not friendly at all and even after we apologized and ordered a flight for sampling, he still was not engaging. I'm not sure if he is the brew master or just someone works for the campsite store, but he didn't seem too happy to be there. We had the 2 stouts, an Amber, and pilsner on tap for our flight. They were all just OK. We didn't want to order more because his attitude and the sense that we were not welcomed there... Which was too bad because it was a nice space with plenty of outdoor seating, a playground in the back for kids to play while parents enjoy some refreshing beer. We will most likely not go back again given the cold-shoulder treatment.

Gentleman behind the bar (the owner, I suspect) was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Quiet and quaint atmosphere. I'm a fan.
