Spacious local brewery located in North Kansas City with the addition of simple but delicious bar food. I have been acquainted with Callsign brews for a while but had never stepped foot into the actual brewery space. Thanks to pub pass that all changes because nothing entices me more than a bogo beer! And to top it off Tuesdays happen to be $10 beer flights so it was a double win. As far as the food menu goes, it's nothing innovative just good bar food classics like sandwiches, burgers, wings, wraps, and appetizers. This time around we went with beer drinking staples- wings and loaded tots. The wing prices I thought were pretty fair ten bone in wings for $16 ($1.60 a wing isn't too bad nowadays). You also could split the ten count with two flavors which is what we did. The first flavor that caught my eye was Parmesan Truffle which I thought was a unique rift on the classic Parmesan Garlic, I was pleasantly surprised when these came out and were dry rub. I prefer a dry rubbed wing because first of all, I love salt and these tend to be definitely more on the salty seasoned side than saucy wings that can be syrupy sweet sometimes depending on the flavor. Secondly, with a flavor adjacent to Garlic Parmesan a wet wing can be very heavy and thus, have the tendency to get soggy. The only qualm I have with these wings is that the flavor didn't exactly live up to expectations, it had nice seasoning and the Parmesan flavor was detectable however, I never got any of that umami flavor of Truffle. They were extremely crispy though and I would order them again. Now onto the next flavor, I decided to order the other creative flavor on the menu (the other two were Hot and Mild) this was a hot honey bourbon glaze. Again, this flavor promised a punch of flavor and didn't fully deliver, I got the notes of the sweet bourbon glaze but none of the heat from the hot honey. The wings themselves weren't over-drenched in sauce so they did stay rather crispy but, it wasn't anything special. The last appetizer we ordered to munch on were the loaded tots which were pretty standard but, good drinking food. They were indeed loaded with lots of liquid cheese, crispy pieces of bacon and a healthy drizzle of ranch. Just so you know, these are listed as loaded fries on the menu but you can sub tots which I was grateful for since I think a tot stays more crispy than a traditional fry when toppings are piled on. Now onto the star of the show, the beers of course. We started with a flight to share so we could each choose a favorite brew to over a full pour of and utilize our Pub Pass. The smoothie sour was my favorite of the bunch which surprised me since I'm usually a hazy IPA girl. That was also a solid choice though and it's what my friend ordered as his full pour. The smoothie sour though was peach cobbler flavored and had the sweetness of ripe peaches, I instantly fell in love, it wasn't as sharp and sour and instead had a smooth finish. Some sours are tougher to drink but this went down easy. The other beer that stood out on our flight was the wine beer, almost akin to a cider but stronger in flavor with a base of Malbec (my favorite red wine). The color was vibrant and it had a rich flavor profile of grapes. Not sure I could have drank a full pour of it though if I'm being honest, it was a little too intense. read more

This place was fun! I attended an event in the back, catered by the bar with a tab for drinks out front. Anyone looking to hold such an event should really consider Callsign, because they managed it very well, provided tasty Mexican food, and a solid and flexible meeting space. The theme is pilot call signs, if you didn't pick that up from the name. Everything is decorated with an aircraft motif. In the back room, there is a wall of glasses alongside the call signs for what might be pilots of past customers... I dunno. But it was fun to read the tags. The only complaint I have is the lack of any diet soda options. I was not there to drink, and a nice diet doctor pepper would have been nice. But I was relegated to water. Meh. read more

Enjoyed my first experience here! First impression is a laid back somewhat dive bar vibe that definitely supports veterans and first responders. I even see on their website that they welcome ways to collaborate to honor military, veterans, and first responders. I went with a couple of lighter beers--the Freedom Lager and the Screaming Eagle Cream Ale--that I found to be as easily drinkable as say a Miller Lite (similar texture) but with great unique flavor. I rated them both highly and would recommend. Callsign also has live music every Friday 7:00-9:00 which I love. This particular night they featured Lindsay Blacksher who is just lovely. read more

The brew pub area is large with a clean simple design. Lots of military and KC sports memorabilia dot the walls. Good tv set ups with clear sight lines from all tables. It is pretty simple and doesn't try to be something it isn't - just a great space to drink good beer. There is also a long narrow outdoor space that gets great shape in the afternoon. Will never go back! Night was great until an employee came up and kicked my friends out of an apparent private party. Nothing was marked and the people in the private party even bought me a beer. When my two friends came in the room one who was an African American it then became a problem and they were asked to leave. Stuff that should have been gone 300 years is obviously alive and well in this establishment. My son as well as another very active member of the community witnessed it too! Our last visit was wonderful. New staff and music bingo was awesome. Owner has adjusted to the local crowd with changes to personnel and we will now be regulars. Went there because of the Pub Pass I received for Christmas, wanted to get my free beer and check the place out. You'll need to go to the bar to order your beer. I was told they do not have a full bar, so my wife got a Dr. Pepper. They had a food truck on sight since they do not have a kitchen. We will try that at a later visit.There is an outside patio, we chose to stay inside due to the wind. Atmosphere was great. It was quiet when we went in with only a handful of people at tables. One gentleman was tying flies at a table. It became busier after we had been there for a bit. The beers I tried were very good, The Freedom Lager and The Jolly IPA. There are several more that I'll try when we go back. read more

This establishment is clear to point out they are veteran owned, but do not be mistaken--the employee interactions are not service oriented. I have visited on several occasions and held my comments until today. Their brewer, Adam Schwarzel, probably should focus on brewing and never be allowed to interact with customers. I probably expected too much, in terms of customer service/experience, since this brewery is framed on a pop-up concept (check their hours). This business will struggle to grow past its current state. Customers have very few options to park. The brew crew is super friendly to some and clearly adverse to others. Nothing new under the sun, though. Plenty other cool places in the city with adequate parking that serve cold brew. To the manager/owner, good luck with your business. I would offer that to grow your customer base, you make an effort to hire individuals who can expand your market--not limit your market. We just got here and we already know it's a keeper. We got a flight of Blonde Bombshell Ale, the Bomber Brown Ale, Test Pilot Amber, and the Screaming Eagle Cream Ale. All of the beers are full of flavor, none of them just blend in, they're very distinct individually. The Brown Ale was by far my favorite of the 4. I lean towards darker beers be it coffee stouts, Imperials, etc...and this beer was a perfect addition to my afternoon. Rich, dark, no bitter aftertaste. Perfect. We were offered a free snack with our flight, they have popcorn, cheese balls, pretzels, and caramel corn. Winning. We can't wait to come back. read more

I love this place. I have met the owner several times. His passion for his country and veterans is one of a kind. I know he is credited for raising enough money to this day for 17 service dogs for solders and first responders suffering from PTSD through organizations to include Missouri Patriot Paws, F.I.S.H. and Battle Buddies. In fact, I was awarded one of the service dogs a few years ago. The location has developed into a huge operation. They had a small space and moved to a building ten times the size of the first location. Its also down a better road so much better visibility. If you are not a craft beer fan, they do make a few beers that will fill that void. The Freedom American Lager, Huey American Wheat and the Screaming Eagle Cream Ale will keep you happy. There are a lot of good beers in the local area, but this place if far most my favorite. They also have a small selection of cocktails and wine for those that want it. read more

I had a wedding and reception in the Lindbergh room. The space was very nice. I was going for casual. Lighting was good. The space was adequate for my 70 guest, and the main bartender was very sweet and no one complained about the service. The space was a bit cramped but it was good enough. The bad...I had to set up the tables and chairs myself the day of. I had to use dirty, wrinkled linens for the tables including the buffet and cake tables! I found them in a pile on the floor in another room. I was told I would only have an hour before to set up! That would not have been enough time! Luckily there was not another event in that room before mine so I was able to get in and set up before the hour they told me I could. I was also told to tell my guest NOT to park in the main parking lot. I thought that was rude and since I was spending so much money on my event, I chose not to tell my guest to not park in the main lot. It took 23 days to get my deposit back, but they sure wanted me to pay the bar tab that night before I left. Good thing I was sober! I'm not sure why they couldn't just take the deposit off the bar tab, but whatever. The event coordinator was hard to get answers at times, but would eventually get back to me. We agreed that they would bring a few other drinks of my liking in for the event, then on the day of I was told that wouldn't be possible, but then with some convincing, she agreed and followed through for me...thank goodness. Not everyone likes craft beer so my guests were very happy with the selection. So that's why I only gave 4 stars. Overall the event went great and I was pleased with the outcome! read more

I didn't know what to expect when we decided to go to Callsign. It's kind of off the beaten path in North Kansas City, and I hadn't heard a ton of buzz about it in the past. The bartenders were incredibly friendly and easy to talk to. They had a good selection of homemade drafts and cheap flights to give you a chance to try them all. None of the beers stood out but none of them were terrible either. The interior is well designed, and I love the concept of incorporating military vets and military names at Callsign. Dropped by Callsign Brewing after eating at the Iron District (they pair well together). Tucked away in the industrial park of North KC, I recommend driving and parking there versus walking from any nearby establishments. As a veteran I really liked their theme and story - and they pull it off well. We received friendly service and grabbed two of the Blackhawk Pale Ales. There was lots of seating inside and a number of tables on their outside patio - we enjoyed the latter. Great sunset views and a good time had by all. Pairs well with a brewery tour / crawl of the other options in North KC. We'd be back! read more

We popped over to Callsign for their live music on Snake Saturday in NKC (St Pats) and we were pleasantly surprised! 2 bar TVs had the Jayhawks game playing. Staff let us taste almost all the taps before we settled on our pint selections. We liked almost all their spring beers so it made it tough to pick! The space is a nice size. The brewery itself was dirty though. Not grimy dirty but it needed a good dusting to clear bugs from the window sill and cobwebs. The beer was ok, we had a flight of six and my favorite was the bomber brown ale. It was pretty busy inside and there seemed to be some regulars in there so that was nice. So welcoming and inviting. Plenty of table space, small shuffleboard, darts and board games for everyone to enjoy! They do not serve food (except for snacks), but they make it very easy to bring food in. We talked to one of the owners and she was a delight. Thanks to her, they offer a cocktail, some creative beer combos and wine. I so appreciate that she is looking out for us non beer drinkers in a beer drinking family The family enjoyed the beer - felt they were solid choices and that the potential to be amazing beers is right there. Callsign is the epitome of a destination brewery, because never in a lifetime would you just happen to drive by this place. It sets in an old factory building in the middle of the block in the heart of NKC's industrial zone. It is now one of 5 microbreweries within 8 blocks of here, pretty amazing for an area that just 5 years ago turned off the lights and rolled up the sidewalks at 6pm. Callsign is not the best beer in NKC, nor is it the fanciest establishment, but it has character and it is genuine. I spoke to several of the family members that have sunk their sweat, time and money into creating this labor of love and their passion and friendliness has reported for duty. They are veteran owned and veteran friendly with lots of references to the military and even a wall size chalkboard for personal notes of remembrance or thanks to others. It seems very easy these days to jump on the bandwagon of forced patriotism, but everything here is subtle and sincere in it's approach. More like a much hipper version of a VFW club. They currently have 4 Ales on tap and after enjoying a flight, I gravitated to the Amber Ale, pretzel snacks and good conversation. Veteran owned and operated, Callsign is an awesome addition to the KC brewery scene. The outside reminds me of the warehouse breweries in California. You won't find a patio outside, but the inside is nice and open. Once you walk inside, the bar is at the front door and if you walk past it, it opens up to a large space full of shuffle board, sitting areas, and open space. Plenty of room for groups. We sat at the bar and were able to talk to the bartender and one of the owners who was working on a new IPA (my favorite). He let me sample a bit from the tank and it was delicious. I love Steve and the theme of this brewery. It's new location is beautiful and the décor is awesome. I still am not wowed by the beers there, however that doesn't mean that you won't be. It's for sure worth stopping in and it's easily capable of handling large groups. So if you're in the northland, give it a shot. read more

Try the WTFO Smoothie Sour! It actually tastes like a smoothie and it's so tasty. The place is kind of simple, but clean and good drinks.

You can never have enough breweries and Callsign Brewing is a great addition to the Northlands brewing scene. We ended up grabbing a flight of their 4 primary beers and were not disappointed in the beers we were presented with. My favorite ended up being the Fighter Pale Ale. As a bonus we ended up getting a tray of snacks to go with the flight! Pretzels are always a great addition to any beer. The space is open and inviting and the staff is extremely friendly and always looking to meet new people in their out of the way location. I recommend that you make the drive a little ways from the heart of the Northlands and try out this great selection. read more

We went on a Barley Bus Tour which stopped in at Callsign. I had never heard of this brewery, but it sounds like they have been open a little over a year. They are veteran owned and operated and do things for veterans in our community like help them get service animals, clothing, etc. We tried three of their beers and by far we all thought their brown ale was out of this world. Their taproom is comfortable with a lot of tables and a couple of couches. They have a shuffleboard, but the board isn't finished so you can't really play. I would definitely recommend this spot for their beer and mission. read more

The only negative thing I could say is that in the upstairs event space, they did not serve their own beer. That aside, the black widow bock and bomber brown were amazing, as was the freedom lager. Odd pricing on the to-go beer, $12 each for a six pack (72 oz) or a crowler (32 oz). Great barkeep. read more
