The salon was nice and the service was great. However, I paid $141 for a Childs cut (with tip).The prices for a kids cut are ridiculous. That price is more than it cost for me to get my hair done. This doesn't include a deep conditioner, a blow out, a silk press.... Just a cut and a wash. The products used you can get at walgreens. I really wish it wasn't so unnecessarily expensive and due to the pricing, there's no way I would return. read more

Would not recommend this place to anyone looking for professionalism and good customer service. I came in on a Tuesday afternoon as a new client to have my curly/wavy hair cut. I was told by the kind front desk person that Olivia, my chosen stylist, was just finishing up with a client and it would be a few minutes. 30 minutes later, I'm still waiting and no introduction nor apology from the stylist. Apparently she was very behind and I overheard her current client say, "I hope you'll be done in the next hour." So I'm waiting an hour and a half for my hair appointment, without one word from the stylist explaining why or offering to reschedule me. And she saw me. We made brief eye contact as I was talking with the front desk person about how to reschedule. Shameful. The front desk person was kind and offered to set me up with someone else. But anyone that has wavy or curly hair knows we're very particular about who we want to cut our hair. I specifically chose this stylist from her description online and her specialty in wavy hair and her supposed proven track record. The whole vibe of this experience made me feel unwelcome in this business. Maybe my stylist was having a bad day, but that doesn't mean you forgo customer service, especially for a new client willing to shell upwards of $150 for a hair cut. As a Black girl with Type 4a/4b hair, I was SUPER nervous going in for a cut. I've had multiple bad experiences with hair salons not really understanding how to care for my hair (and ending up with the dreaded triangle) and was extra nervous about seeing a junior stylist. However, these stylists are EXCEPTIONAL. I have recommended this salon to so many other Black women over the past couple of years. Sadly the specific stylist I saw moved on after her training, but the training they do here is stupendous, so I'm excited to find a new stylist to work with once I can afford my next haircut (prices are not bad for a quality curly cut, I am just a student). I went in on a Sunday without an appointment and expected to not be seen that day, but the front staff were especially nice at trying to fit me in and managed to find me a spot at the end of the day! The employee who washed my hair, EJ, was especially friendly and kind and really made me feel welcome :) I've had previous unfortunate experiences at salons and was especially nervous about this cut, but Cally did an awesome job and I cannot thank her enough for the huge change to my hair! I've been on the curly hair salon track for over 20 years. I am not sure why I didn't find Cally sooner, but am glad I did! My hair is very fine, but I have tight curls. After having felt like I educated myself extensively on my curls, my hair has been changing with age. No matter what you have learned about your hair, there is always either something new to try or a change in your hair that necessitates a flex in your haircare~! I feel like the thing I like most about the salon is that it is very relaxed and non judgemental- most women my age have some not so great experiences with salons knowing how to care for, touch and cut our curly, fragile hair. I love that no matter how many times I am sure she has heard everyone's horror stories, Cally makes me feel very heard and doesn't "insist" that I do anything to my hair unless it works for me which I very much appreciate! It has allowed me to feel more confident in caring for my hair and wearing it down more. I also like that she is trained in many different types of curly hair cuts- I have had them all and feel at this point the dry cut is best for me. She can assess your hair and decide what is best for you. I like the different products she carries and have referred many friends to her already. Her prices are less than I have paid elsewhere for a curly cut, the staff is very friendly, the facility is very clean and pleasant to spend time in. I even go to get my hair styled occaisonally because I need cuts less frequently. I haven't ever gone anywhere to get my hair styled- I've never liked how they styled it and Cally does a great job. Best of all, Cally has hair similar to mine so there is no better feeling that knowing the person working on your hair has actually had the same troubles from time to time and isn't intimidated with these curls! I think if you are new to the curly hair world, you should understand that a new client consultation, cut, style etc will take a good chunk of time- many hours. The hair is cut dry first, then washed and product applied. The hair needs to be bone dry before you can touch the curls again and finish styling it. At which point it will be touched up with additional areas being cut. This is important because if you cut a big amount off before you dry it, the curls may spring up and then your hair may look much shorter than you wanted. Better to take off a little at time and be in control as opposed to not being able to put it back! I think this may frustrate people because the timing can get tricky for the apts. Having patience with curly hair is key and in the salon is no exception. Curly hair doesn't need to be cut that often so even if you spend a large amount of time at Cally's for your apt, you most likely will be able to go a number of months in-between cuts! read more

Juliette did such a good job with my hair - I'm getting a lot of compliments! She took her time and answered all my questions. She's very knowledgeable when it comes to curly hair. I appreciate the conversations had with her. She did her thing and I am definitely going to be a returning client! The salon itself is pretty cool and welcoming. Since I didn't know this I want to let yall know that there's parking for customers behind the salon as I did wish I knew before paying for street parking (I may have missed it on their website, not sure). I was really excited about my appointment at Cally but unfortunately the experience was not what I expected. I paid a little over $300 for a service I was really unhappy with. I paid for a master stylist which she was. She did a great job cutting my hair but every time I asked for an opinion on hair care it was vague. Really not answered. There was no communication. I didn't know I was getting charged for deep conditioning. I thought it was just a hair wash that was included. Everyone there seemed annoyed by the customers. I felt uncomfortable and just didn't felt welcomed. A lot of product was used on my hair. Which I understand it's part of the business but I was not impressed. I have gotten better customer service for a $60 haircut. I would've gone back to Cally but it's overpriced for the lack of customer service. read more

I had an appt at 11am the time they open up on a Sunday. The option was to reschedule or cancel, with call or email. I chose to email thinking someone in management would receive it and reply. It was about 7:30ish 8am I emailed letting them know I was sick and will have to re schedule. I received a call from a guy stating I need 24hrs to cancel or reschedule (which I totally understand in other circumstances) He staTed therefore my next rebook, I will have to pay $50? If I knew I was going to be sick I would have called the day before I didn't know sick called you to let you know you're going to be sick as a heads up. read more

I'm a curly haired girl myself and while I"m gone over to the dark side (aka straight hair) I want my 9 year old daughter to embrace her beautiful curls. I"ve heard that devacuts can be life changing and based on my research (thanks Yelp) looks like Cally's is the place to go for one in Chicagoland. I called and made an appointment with Yelp popular Bette and told my daughter to get ready for the best haircut of her life...followed by a trip to the nearby Marshmallow Bar. She was way more excited about the marshmallow bar, but happy to get a haircut (or trim since she loves her hair long) if the end result was marshmallows. On haircut day we made our way to downtown to Cally's with 7 year old curly haired brother in tow because he knew if he sat quietly thru his sister's haircut he would get some marshmallows too. When we arrived we were quickly scolded for not following the 3 Ds (dry, detangled and down). No one had told me this when booking an appointment or confirming. I let the front desk know and they told me it's on the website. Personally I don't think you can count on people checking websites ahead of appointments. The usual 1.5 hour process took over an extra hour because of the detangling process and they also charged me an extra $56. I think they should be paid for their time, but I still was annoyed since I could have saved a lot of time, money and detangling pain if I had known. My daughter (who I admit can be very dramatic) said the detangling process hurt so much. And while her curls looked beautiful she was so distraught when we left that she didn't even want to stop at the marshmallow bar. She just wanted me to promise I'd never take her back there. I definitely learned a lot about taking care of curly hair (ex: don't even brush it while wet). Bette also gave product suggestions, although I threw out all the uber expensive devacurl products I bought since I started hearing accusations about them a week later and didn't want to take the chance on my daughter's hair. I also thought it was a good haircut, but no better than where I usually take her so will stick with my curly haired stylist moving forward. I'm glad I tried Callys and would urge those with curly hair who need to learn how to manage it to find their way there. I do think it's was a lot for a 9 year old, but if I ever decided to return to my curly roots I'd most definitely go back myself. read more

Meh. Senior cut $115 was just OK. Unfortunately my curly cut girl left the area and i tried this place. I'm always excited to see how someone styles my hair and this one fell flat- literally. My curls were turned to waves. My stylist seemed unhappy or bored to be at work. I struggled to get a glass of water and finally got up from under the dryer roasting my scalp to ask the front desk. TLDR: Would recommend the color service but definitely not the cut. I really don't enjoy leaving bad reviews, but I do want to put this service out there to potentially save someone the tears and frustration. I got my hair cut and colored by John and I'll start with positive: the hair color came out great and was very similar to the reference picture I showed him! When it comes to the cut, it is definitely the worst haircut I've gotten in my life and I've had quite a few. I told him that I wanted to keep my length but add a couple layers. I ended up losing at least 3+ inches of hair, but possibly the worst part being the cut is completely lopsided. The left side is 3ish inches shorter than the right. I really want to enjoy the color but there's no hairstyle I can rock that the length difference isn't obvious. Unfortunate that we spent all that money just for me to have to spend even more to get it braided until it grows out because I feel too embarrassed to go out in public. I do want to mention that the owner was super kind and receptive to the situation. My hair isn't 100% curly, but enough strands are that I need a curly-head tamer and Curls & Co is it. I've tried a couple of their stylists and you really can't go wrong. I doubt I'll ever go anywhere else again. In my middle age, part of my hair has become curlier while the hair underneath has stayed oddly straight. (Plus I wear my gray naturally, so my hair has extra coarseness.) I found a curly expert years ago who gave me cuts I thought were top-of-line, but required trims every 6-8 weeks. At Curls & Co. THANKS to YOU again fellow yelpers, I have found my new curly hair stylist. TEAM EVI I would give her more stars if I could. Let me start with one minor negative.... I am very anal about my time. The owner could not have been kinder in greeting me and letting me know the stylist was running a few minutes behind. In my world a few minutes is up to 10. I actually debated leaving. Then I remembered her saying that EVI would be worth the wait...so I did.. AND SHE WAS!!! At about 16 minutes after 4 I went to the front desk. I think it's only fair if they have a "15 minute late-rule" that should work both ways. Now let's get to the FABULOUS news... EVI came right over and said hello and apologized. The minute I sat in her chair I felt a comfort as though I have known her for a while. I had an idea of what I wanted but I told her I much prefered her professional opinion..She pulled out a few inches of hair and said I would like to take off "this much".. I have been wanting to go short but I was really afraid of the Brillo effect in the humidity. Yesterday I said EFF it, let's do it!! It will grow back.. ( I have an abundance of hair handkerchiefs just in case.*grin*) It turned out even better than I could imagine. I am considering going back to get it chopped off to my chin. I would also like to mention the very kind woman at the front door. I came early..I received the wrong email. Wow! Where to start? After thoroughly researching Deva certified stylists in my area, I stumbled upon Curls and Company salon. Even though they're in Rogers Park and I live in Oak Park (an hour long drive!) I was convinced by the reviews and braved the long drive out. I was able to easily book an appointment a week in advance with Divine. The salon was easy to find and parking was available right in front of the salon. It was pretty cheap at $4 for 2 hours. Upon entering the salon, I was greeted by the friendly girls at the front desk. I was offered something to drink and sat at the waiting area until Divine was ready for me. Their decor is pretty cool and British-chic. They had a vast array of DevaCurl, Ouidad, Olaplex, and other high end products available as well as the curly girl's bible "Curly Girl Handbook" on sale. I only waited for about 10 minutes before Divine came over to get me. She was super nice and very knowledgeable. She took her time to look at my hair and talk to me about what kind of look I was going for. After the initial consultation, everything was SO different from every other haircut I've had before. The first cut was dry and curl by curl, the shampoo (or low-poo) was relaxing and included a soothing scalp massage. After that, Divine showed me how to style my hair and achieve more volume by clipping my roots. At the end, she finished the look off by doing a second dry cut to perfect the shape of my hair. She even took into consideration my face shape and the fact that I'm tying to grow out my bangs. Overall, the experience was magical! I'm so happy with how my hair looks and I really appreciated that neither Divine nor the girls at front desk were pushy about selling me their whole DevaCurl line of products. Even though they didn't push for it, I ended up buying 2 products at $25 a pop because they were just amazing! If you're on the fence about getting a DevaCut, absolutely just do it! At $89, it wasn't as expensive as I've seen at other Chicago salons and believe me, it will change your life!! Or at least it will revitalize your curls! :) read more

I have now gotten not just a second but a third opinion from other stylists regarding the condition of my hair. They each separately advised that it appeared my hair was thinned out with thinning shears which they said should have no place in a devacut. But more importantly they each confirmed that it's devastating to natural hair! It completely changed my curl pattern. I'm honestly still in shock about how terrible my "devacut" turned out. She took off at least 2 inches and ravaged my curls. I didn't even recognize my hair once she was done. It looks stringy and lifeless. I had pretty uncomplicated hair so I was super excited to get a curl enhancing cut. Very disappointed. read more

I got a cut and perm with my reference being Baby from dirty dancing being the inspiration and she delivered exactly what I asked for. I also had a nice cup of tea during the service and felt well taken care of. You do have to go in for a consultation before booking the perm service, and as my hair is very thick it was kind of pricy. That being said, for the quality of the service and being able to go home without that gross after perm smell I believe it was money spent well and priced fairly. I believe it was $90/hour for the service I received. My stylist was Lisa Marie and she's a dream! I went back after two months to get an undercut and add some fun color and she did even better than I could've imagined. I'm in love with this new style and highly recommend seeing her as she always exceeds my expectations and gives me everything I ask for and more! read more

Amazing experience. The best hair cut I have ever had. I went to Bette and appreciated the time she spent with me to discuss products and address my specific hair concerns sunce my hair was really damaged from coloring. The entire experience is incredible. As a curly hair "girl" who has only recently discovered the CGM. I had a lot of questions. First Bette talked with me about what I wanted. I showed her a few pictures and we talked. Then she dry cut my hair. I chose to have a deep conditioner then my hair was dried under a diffuser. Then cut again (!) When I saw my hair I felt like I was finally seen. I felt like myself. Bette also talked worked with me to find a gel and finishing products that I would like. It's been a month since my spectacular cut. I get compliments ALL the time on my beautiful curls. Before my hair looked pretty okay but now my hair curls and lays perfectly. LOVE them. I drive over an hour to get a cut because they are the curl experts. I've gone to several stylists and they've all been great. They give you great information on care and product usage. They listen to what you want. Never have to worry about that weird triangle cut. Curls are unpredictable, so it's great that you can come back after your cut for a touch up if you notice that something is off. I've gone since Covid and they did a great job of taking the appropriate precautions. read more

I literally have zero complaints. To start, I have typical multiple texture, hard to explain, 4C? (Whatever that means), black girl hair. It's short. Slow to grow. And if it gets a bad cut? Takes me 1 to 2 years to grow it back. So I am VERY hesitant to let someone cut my hair. Now! My stylist was (is!) Kelley George. Service: Deva Cut (which includes wash) She was on time (I count 10 minutes late on time when it comes to the hair world. Stuff happens man!) First thing, she sat down AND ASKED me about my hair! She assumed nothing! Love it. She took her time. Always asking "is this how you like? No? How about this?" She understands it's YOUR head and you have to live with it. When we were done, my hair was so soft! (Still is) I left the shop ready to go! Didn't have to go home and restyle, like I've had to do every other time. And she got the shape spot on! It's a pretty common shape (tapered fro), but you'd be surprised how often people jack it up. She gave some suggestions of products that I may like, but it was relevant to my "hair goals". And even would say "I don't know about this product. It's new. Take a little home with you (sample) and let me know how you like it!" I love honesty. She did not push the sale of anything, which is nice. No pressure. So break down: Salon: super clean and cute! Staff: friendly! And courteous Bathroom: didn't go. Can't comment. Products: recommend. Hair feels great! Stylist: yes please! Such a joy. I will definitely go back for my trims and let her color my hair. Disclaimer: I've been using the Deva Curl products for almost a year so my hair was in pretty good shape to start out with, according to her. I didn't need any major reconstruction. I was stressed out when I made my first appointment at Cally's. While I usually have a haircut every 3-4 months, I hadn't had one in ten months thanks to both my COVID-related avoidance of indoor public places, and the fact that my beloved stylist of 10+ lives hundreds of miles away in a town I used to visit for work all the time, and that's not happening anymore. Cally's came very highly recommended, but I was still nervous. Luckily, I had no reason to be nervous! First of all, they took COVID-related precautions very seriously, from the CV-related interview at entry to the fact that all staff wore their masks *properly* the whole time -- not the maddening "oh, my nose doesn't count" execution I see everywhere. And Melina! Melina did a tremendous job with my hair, and she was pleasant to work with to boot. I explained that I was coming off of ten years of the same, very specific haircut from the same stylist, and while I wasn't trying to replicate it, there were certain qualities I'd like to carry over into my new, longer look. She incorporated them flawlessly, with her own style that I really love. She also paid attention when I told her how I take care of my hair (low maintenance, usually air-dry, etc) and took that into account with the cut. It's not every day that someone in Melina's role really listens, and she did. I will definitely be back to see Melina! read more

I went pre and post Covid. Same great sense of attention and professionalism each time. They take your safety just as seriously as they take your hair styling. Kelly George is truly the best. She listens to you and consults with you all the way through the cut. She really pays attention to every detail, so that when you walk out, you feel like a Queen. My Deva cut with Curls and Company was a joyful experience. The cut made my mixture of 2c-4a curls pop and bounce. The styling was so fabulous that even after 4 days and 2 HIIT classes, they still looked great. If you have any doubts, cast them away. You can't set foot in the salon until your temperature and " medical history" are taken. You have to wear a mask. They take you straight to the sink to wash your hands and the number of folks (including staff) in the salon is controlled so that social distancing guidelines are adhered to. Wonderful! I got the best haircut here a while ago but haven't been back since. While the stylists at the shop are extremely skilled and well deserving of praise and financial reward, like much of the curly haired demographic, I am not in a position to pay such a steep price for a haircut. It would be nice to one day be a curly haired person and not have to pay two to three times more for a haircut than those with straight hair. If you can afford their prices, I definitely recommend this shop. *Be sure to throughly detangle your hair beforehand. I made the mistake of leaving hair gel in my hair before the appointment which risked me paying a detangling fee that was kindly waived. read more

So I discovered I had wavy curly hair during the pandemic after thinking it was just bushy for the first 40 years of my life. I got my first curly cut yesterday and Bette was amazing. She taught me what to do with my hair, gave me a lovely layered cut that brought out the volume and the curl and detailed instructions on how to manage it. Great experience!
