This review is long overdue. I do not recommend becoming a regular customer at this salon. I have been a customer for over 12 years. This year I was diagnosed with cancer and needed to have my head shaved due to my chemotherapy. The owner wanted to charge me $75 for this service even though there would be no shampooing, no styling, nothing. I challenged this because I felt that the owner was being cheap and taking advantage of a captive customer (I was not expecting that it be done for free but I also wasn't expecting to pay the regular haircut price either). Rather than receiving an accommodation, I was told that I could go down the street to the barber shop and pay $25. The owner has a fine reputation as a stylist but due to her lack of compassion, she operates her business with pure greed. There are too many other salons out there that are just as good and far more courteous. read more

Eryn - the owner of Calm, A Salon is OUTSTANDING. The salon itself is beautiful and everyone in it is like a big family. A wonderful place to spend a few hours and treat yourself! She did my daughters hair, cut and color - and it's the best I've seen it look in years! They do consultations about your hair and what you want before - which is 100% worth it! Really gets an understanding of what you want! Eryn and Sonya also did all the hair and makeup for my other daughters wedding this past weekend. 9 Bridesmaids and the 2 moms as well! Words cannot explain what a wonderful job they both did. They did far more that just made each girl look gorgeous. Eryn is a "hairapist" and a wonderful one at that. She calmed everyone, worked with everyone's unique wants and needs, and made the bridal party look spectacular. Could not have been happier. I didn't have a great experience here. I have lighter ends that had gotten brassy and wanted to darken my roots, along with a cut. During my first visit, I had to return because my color wasn't toned properly and was still extremely brassy and my roots didn't look darker at all. When I came back to fix the color, they toned it down more, but didn't fix my roots. I decided to give it another shot a few months later and the result was that my color looked exactly the same all around - my ends we're very dark and my roots weren't dark at all. Nice people, but won't be back. Cost of cut and color was $165. read more

I noticed this salon one day as I was walking in Piedmont. It had stellar yelp reviews and the prices seemed reasonable (haircuts starting at $40 and up), so I decided to give it a try. After a bad hair cut at my last salon, I was in desperate need of repair. The place is charming and the staff was friendly, but I was shocked when I was charged $121 ($91 for the cut + $30 for a consultation) for what essentially amounted to a trim. I would have gladly paid that for a great new haircut, but I left looking barely different than when I came in. It was strange, especially after Eryn, the salon owner, explained to me that she felt it was unethical, in this economy, not to be up front about costs. My hair is still in need of repair, only now it's too short to tie up while I am waiting for it to grow. The end result definitely wasn't worth the money. I have been getting my hair cut and styled here since I was in high school, on the recommendation of my mom. When Dusty was there, she styled my hair for my senior prom back in 2008. Though my mom has followed Dusty to Jajou and Polish, I have stayed at Calm and seen several amazing stylists: Heather, Shannon, Ainslie, and Alli. I usually see Ainslie but I will gladly see whoever is available during my visits to the bay. No matter who I see, my hair always looks great. Although I currently live in Washington DC, I always make getting my hair cut a part of my trips to CA thanks to Ainslie and the rest of the gang. Finally, the receptionists are very nice and Eryn personally knows my name even though she has never cut my hair before. Prices are reasonable (coming from the perspective of someone who gets her hair done infrequently) and I highly recommend Calm to anyone who wants fantastic hair in the hands of awesome stylists! read more

She took her time, listened to what I wanted, we discussed some photos and she gave me a good cut. Calm, A Salon is one of my favorite places. Eryn, the owner and stylist, has created an oasis in a bustling, busy, and crazy city. It is always a treat to come in and be pampered. Eryn is a creative and innovative stylist. She was completely undaunted when I came in a few years back, with my Japanese hair magazines and explained to her that I wanted a modified '80s asymmetrical bob with a Japanese anime flair. The result was a one of a kind hair style that received so many compliments. Since then, Eryn has tweaked and evolved the style. Is it vain to say that I love my hair and I feel beautiful when I leave the salon!? I have since moved out of the Oakland area and so sad that I can't take Eryn with me. I called Calm, and Alyssa went above and beyond in discussing options and pricing. I seriously chose this place based on her wonderful customer service alone. Fast forward to my appointment. The salon is welcoming and true to its name. The receptionist was friendly and attentive, and they have water and snacks for customers. I was seen right on time, and Alyssa is really friendly, listens to you, and offers her honest opinion. We decided to skip highlights and do cut and color instead. I had a great experience here where I chopped off all my hair. I saw Heather and she was adorable and so cute and friendly, she put me at ease right away. Actually I've never been so happy in a hair salon in my life, and I was even in a bad mood that day, but when I walked out I was on top of the world. The owner, Eryn was so nice and introduced herself personally. Everyone was beautiful in terms of welcoming me. However, I don't know if I could go back because this day in age I just don't think I could afford it. I've been going to Heather at Calm for 5 years and am only disappointed that I didn't find her sooner! From the moment you walk into the salon, you feel relaxed and comfortable. There is no feeling of being rushed and no air of pretentiousness, as you find in other upscale salons. After almost 20 years of having dreadlocks, I brushed out bangs. Once I had them, I realized I didn't know what to do with them. Heather gave some expert advice and suggested a cut that would flatter. I took her word for it, got my bangs trimmed in a way I had not anticipated I would, and loved the look. I got lots of compliments too! I went back for a re-trim and requested Heather again. She did a great job again. I've had my hair done there one time and I now go to get my eye brows done today was my 4th time and I love it. This place is great - I have seen both Ainsley (I seriously love that name!!) and Alyssa. Both are wonderful. Neither are scared of my Middle Eastern unruly, curly, straight, wavy mess of hair that -yes, I AM aware of how thick it is, thanks for telling me, I never knew that , I somehow managed to live 120 years without hearing how damned thick my hair is- cannot usually be tamed. Picture a screaming, hissing, feral cat (that's my hair). Now picture two wonderful, sweet, skilled, and fearless hairstylists taming that cat, transforming it into a pretty, soft, purring kitty with the prettiest mane in town. At least the day of. They both knew what to do with my hair and this was my first visit to both of them. I have been going to the salon for over 3 years but just returned from a small hiatus. I had this salon do my hair/make-up for my wedding this past September. Eryn did both and she is fantastic! She is a true professional; very well trained and talented. I was really apprehensive and worried I wasn't going to like the outcome since I've had bad experiences in the past but everything looked so amazing. Eryn was also really supportive in other ways on the day of the wedding. She's done 100's of weddings and you can tell. She calmed me down when she could tell I was starting to get stressed out , helped my bridesmaids help me get into my dress and even assisted them with their hair even though she wasn't hired to do that. She was an all-around hair/make-up stylist, wedding expert, therapist, spiritual guide and more! Eryn is also the owner of Calm and has created a lovely salon that has a wonderful vibe and really friendly staff. I also worked with Shannon who did my cut & color a few weeks before my wedding. Usually I dye my own hair and boy, was it worth spending the extra cash! I got tons of compliments on the color (a really deep rich red like Emma Stone's) even from random people I barely know. This salon is great for weddings and also for every day hair needs. Whenever I was there, other patrons seemed really happy and excited to be there. I just went to Calm today and I will most definitely be back. Eryn is so wonderful; she's thoughtful, patient, and very knowledgeable. She totally set me straight with a lot of my bad hair habits and gave really good advice. Let me tell you about some things that will NOT happen at this salon: 1) You won't feel rushed in any way, (hello, calm.) 2) You won't have that awful "oh my gosh, what is happening now? is it rude to ask?" feeling. Eryn talked me through every step of the process (ok, next we're going to do this, and then we'll do that) and she made very clear that I could ask questions along the way. 3) You won't feel like anyone is pushing products on you. Eryn told me about their products and the ways that they worked, but I never felt pressured at all to spend money in a way I wasn't comfortable. 4) You won't feel like you just got stuck with a style that you can't recreate at home. Eryn was super purposeful about listening to my lifestyle needs and what I could and couldn't manage on my own. 5) You won't feel like you just spent a lot of money that wasn't worth it. Face it, it can be pricey to look good :) ! Eryn was on the pricey side with the consultation and treatment, but it was worth every penny. Plus, I can go back for a bang trim every 4 weeks. Woohoo! I've been going here for a year and a half. Ainslie healed my over-highlighted, dry hair and used balayage and expertise to bring it back to soft, silky, healthy hair. Erin, the owner, and the assistant stylist for Ainslie, Margaret also have contributed to the recovery of my hair and scalp health. As I'm growing it out, Ainslie has kept it healthy while keeping length. I use the Kerastase products (even though she had never pushed them to me). They also have made a huge difference in my hair and scalp health. The entire staff of Calm give you snacks and drinks, and treat you professionally and graciously at all times. In sum, Ainslie really cares about her clients, and works very hard to create your vision. She is always taking advanced practicums to learn and deepen her expertise in coloring and etc. This is the best salon I've ever been to, and I've always had great service- but Calm brings in the artistic vision and expertise to make you look and feel confident with healthy and beautiful hair. read more

Brown, pretty, rich, not overly any color other than what I was hoping for. Based on the amount of wrong color I have had in my life, I would have to strongly recommend Alyssa for getting it right. I have been coming here every 4-5 weeks since 2013. Eryn runs a tight, luxury cruise (ship is too pedestrian a word) with amazing employees. Stephany colored my hair today. She is fantastic. Sometimes Cris does it, sometimes Reena. It does not matter who does it, because they all have the Eryn seal of approval...which is all that matters to me since Eryn is a consummate professional.
