I followed Alyssa over to Calm and could not be happier. Alyssa's been cutting my hair for about two years now and she is the ONLY ONE who has been able to give me a fantastic haircut. I have extremely fine, very curly hair. I can't count how many bad haircuts I've had in the past, but suffice to say I've had my fair share. I am constantly told by more inexperienced stylists (at least those that don't know how to cut curly hair) that I need to wear my hair short. They end up either butchering my hair altogether, and/or over-texturize it, which ends up making it look too thin and lank. Enter Alyssa. When I first saw Alyssa (in Danville), she immediately noticed that a) the color wasn't right for me, and b) that I didn't have the right cut for my type hair. It took her awhile to get it into shape, but surprise, surprise. She actually talked me into wearing my hair LONG, which believe me, no other stylist has ever said this to me before. Ever. My first experience with the Calm Salon was just last month. I noticed how happy Alyssa seemed when I first saw her when I walked in. From the receptionist to all the others who work here, they all were warm and friendly. One of the things that I feel make Alyssa such an outstanding stylist is the fact that she attends numerous hairstyling seminars, so she is constantly learning more and more about her craft. She doesn't see this business as a 'job,' she really LIKES what she does for a living. And it shows. I swear - I have NEVER LOVED my hair this much. The color, done by Alyssa as well, is fantastic; the cut is just amazing. I grew up with a Dad who is a hairstylist and he told me, years ago, that stylists don't learn how to cut hair like mine (curly) in beauty school. They have to learn this on their own. It's obvious that Alyssa's put in the time to learn all that she can, not only about my own hair type, but re: coloring as well. As I sat in Alyssa's chair, I noted several others who came and left with great haircuts. I normally wouldn't rave about a business like this, but with Calm, I'm making an exception. I'm sure they won't be able to please everyone - that's impossible - but this is an awesome place. read more

At first I thought with so many 5 star ratings, do they need another one. I read all the reviews, some with lower ratings to get a feel of what was being said about the salon. I have known Eryn Murray Harrison, the owner, since she first passed her cosmetologist exam and then I became one of her first clients. Can't tell you how long ago that was. In any event, I am most proud of Eryn, watching her develop into a top salon, specializing in absolutely top notch service. I have used Ainsley quite a bit, Alyssa for extensions, Heather and Shannon, Marilyn, but most of all, Eryn. You pay more than a $100 for a haircut with Eryn but let me tell you, I have had cuts that no one else can come close to doing. She remains motivated to train her staff and the salon runs as a very cohesive unit. Yes, there are things like charges for consultations, inability to include your tip in a credit card or check, but these are all examples of necessary steps a top notch salon needs to address. Because this salon employs "employees" and not independent contractors makes all the difference in the world when it comes to unity, team work, helping each other out, consistency in the looks of the salon, and most importantly, consistent top notch hair products, which Kerastace has remained on the cutting edge of hair products. The one downside is that Eryn rarely takes on new clients as she has so many, and I book my appointments out a year and wouldn't dare think of canceling one due to a conflict, rather work around them. So for some people, that may not be workable. The front desk help with Stacey and Casey unify the team that is clearly working well and make sure your appointments can be made with whomever you want. I used to drive 2 hours to see Eryn for 6 years when we lived in the South Bay, but thankfully we are back in Alamo and the drive is a snap. I love Calm a Salon! I never understood before what a true salon experience is like. These women will pamper you! From helping me with everyday make up to make up for a big event, Margaret has been amazing. Ainsley and Sonia do awesome haircuts, color and treatments, and Eryn, the owner, is super friendly and accessible. They recommend products but don't do a hard sell, and I've been happy with the products they've chosen for me. Also, Ainsley recommended the Keratase de-frizzing treatment, and I am not kidding that it has changed my life! Menopausal hormones have made my normally straight hair into a frizzy nightmare... no more. Now I just have lovely, manageable curls. I love the new color Margaret did for me -- and in a few days, I'm bringing my husband in for his first salon experience, and hopefully some real help with his hair, which is needing help these days. thank you alli for making my scrappy grown out hair look fabulous. i have very thick, long asian hair, so it's not always easy to find someone who cuts it well in a way that it will also grow out nicely. alli was so sweet, beautiful, and made my hair amazing! also to note, the studio owner and other stylists in there were all very professionally personable and made sure that all of the clients were greeted and comfortable. note - they dont take tips on credit card, so next time i'll be more prepared with a better tip! sorry! read more

Went here about a year ago as my regular stylist was on vacation and I had read some great reviews about this neighborhood salon. Called to make an appointment and was assigned to a stylist by receptionist as I had never been there before. Was told that I was set with a junior stylist equivalent. The salon itself is nice and based on the personal attention I saw others receive, I see why the reviews are good. Unfortunately, my stylist was not quite at the junior level, and ended up butchering my hair that I had been growing out for two years- I do believe that she was inadequately trained and should not have been cutting independently yet. I have thick, wavy hair that she did not know how to manage. I believe that the owner may have recognized this upon seeing the final result of my hair. Although both ladies were very gracious, I will not return here. Be sure that you schedule with a senior stylist if you have anything but straight average hair. Thanks anyways! read more

It was a great experience, from easily booking the appointment on-line (I managed to get a same day appointment!), to the great customer service, to my excellent haircut from Criselda. i asked for something new, some style and some layering. heather cut my hair and trimmed very little off. and then asked me if i wanted to buy some shampoo and then charged me $80...when the website says haircuts start at $40. i am more than happy to pay $80 for a haircut but NOT for a trim. i actually went back and explained that i did not feel she had cut enough off or given me any style...so she cut it again. but again...barely cut anything and no style. i feel bad because she is very very nice...she just needs to get some guts when i comes to cutting hair. if you are charging $80 a haircut...you better know how to do more than trim. read more

I went to Calm last week and couldn't have left happier. I'd been a while since I got my last haircut and my hair was...unhealthy. The last couple times I got a hair cut my hair ended up WAY shorter than I wanted so I'd been letting it grow out for entirely too long. The salon requires you have a $15 consult at your first appointment and it was worth it. Heather took the time to understand how I take care of my hair and what kind of life I lead so she could offer realistic suggestions and advice. Heather is extremely nice. I felt comfortable asking her questions and felt she provided me with useful feedback. She explained how I was getting split ends and how to prevent it in the future. One thing that I LOVED, was that she styled my hair like I would on a normal day. She explained that since I'm not a "product girl" she didn't want to put anything in my hair that I wouldn't typically use. When she was done, she wanted me to see what my hair would look like on a daily basis. I also appreciated that she didn't spend a lot of time pushing products; I think they speak for themselves anyway. When the cut was done I couldn't believe the job she'd done. Considering how unhealthy I knew my hair was, I was shocked that she was able to keep it so long. I left with long, now healthy hair, and a big smile on my face. Hands down, this was the best salon experience I've ever had. I don't live in the area, but plan to schedule appointments to see Heather when I'm in town. read more

Let me tell you about being a man who grew up on super cuts and saw the error of his hair ways. I have always had cheap basic hair cuts, that only look okay for about a week and closer to disheveled till the next 13 buck go round. Then I started seeing Eryn at Calm at the suggestion of my wife my hair world has never been the same. After explaining that I only get my hair cut every six weeks at the most, she sized me up and gave me a cut and didn't use clippers (which was foreign to me) and it was by far the best cut I have ever had. And to boot round about five weeks later I was not only not disheveled but I hardly thought I needed a hair cut at all, apparently that is the mastery of it all. Eryn is the consummate professional truly knowledgeable and skilled at every aspect of hair; and no detail is overlooked by her or any member of her staff. I'm visiting the Bay Area for the month and needed a haircut so I booked with Meg Alper who was phenomenal. From the consult to the shampoo to the cut and style she was professional and superb. She gave a scalp and neck massage that was thoroughly relaxing. She styled my thinning hair with just enough of a nuanced and sophisticated difference that made it look fantastic and I've received a number of wow your hair looks great where did you get it done? comments. Needed a new salon. Tried Calm. Couldn't be happier. Sonya did my color and it is fantastic. The price was totally reasonable, and the salon is a pleasant place. Can book online. The owner came over to introduce herself and welcome me a received a free blow out (also fantastic) because it was my first time there. Kerastase product line. A week to 10 days later I received a hand written thank you note from Sonya. This is amazing and certainly made the difference to me. Good Business practices. Totally will return. One star is pushing it! Scheduling an appointment here is almost impossible and certainly not pleasant or welcoming. I booked a Tuesday appointment one month in advance for a color, cut and highlight. I was called on Saturday to confirm my appointment for highlights with Margaret. I let them know the appointment was for 3 services not 1 and this was for a big event. I was told that they only had time for highlights and I would have to reschedule the rest. Once again I told them to talk to my stylist about the confusion because she was aware of the big event and that I only had this day to get it done. No return phone call. Finally got a call 20 mins before my scheduled appointment that once again it would only be for highlights as I had previously been informed. I was told there was nothing they could do to get me all 3 services from my stylist even though THEY had originally booked the wrong services. Horrible, horrible customer service from start to finish by the schedulers. Not only could they not accommodate me they were very rude. Which is such a shame because Margaret is fabulous and deserves better support. Call me if you change salons Margaret. I will spending my time and money elsewhere. read more

Sorry to do this but I had a bad experience twice with Calm Salon. I am new to the area and wanted to find a salon within walking distance. As a new customer I told the receptionist over the phone I was looking for a quality professional cut. I paid for the 20 minute "consultation" as required of all new customers and gave the stylist a detailed rundown of my hair type and what I was looking for. She asked if I would a mine a few layers in my hair, and I replied that would be OK but I wanted to keep the length. What I ended up with was a true hack job on par with Super Cuts. The hair style was wild - sharply angled with triangles cut out of the back leading to long wisps covering my cheekbones - and even worse did not even remotely go with by face shape. It was a cut for a round, not square face. I do not have tattoos or body piercing. Why the hair dresser would give me a highly edgy cut - without consulting - is just bad business practice. Secondly, I have a classic square face with high cheek bones that requires a soft cut away from my cheeks. Any trained hair dresser would know this. This cut was sharp and angled. Thirdly, it was a bad quality cut with chunks missing from one of the sides. I have straight hair so mishaps are easily noticed. To add insult to injury, when I went in for a fix, after explaining very clearly to the receptionist that the style was not what I asked for and of poor quality, I was given a 15 minute dry fix and told the rest could not be fixed unless I made a full appointment for a wet cut. Oh, and the hair dresser who had done the cut was not longer at Calm. Hmmmm. So I was given the new trainee? Fat chance I was going to continue working with Calm Salon! I am now driving out to Di Pieto in Walnut Creek. They are all professionals - the hair dresser is working on fixing the disaster Calm A Salon gave me - it will take two more cuts to grow it out. The receptionist listened to what I needed and made sure to direct me to the right people. I would advise strong caution in using Calm, unless you don't mind hair disaster. read more
