I'm more of a BART person since I live closer to one but sometimes take Caltrain when I go to Oracle Park since it's closer. Thought I would share some tips for someone who doesn't ride frequently. 1.) Clipper If you use a Clipper Card, when you tag in, it will charge you the FULL AMOUNT first. Once you tag out, it will "refund" you the difference. Example: Origin Station (Tag in) = San Francisco = Charge $14.70 Destination Station (Tag Out) = Sunnyvale = Refund $6.75 Total = $7.95 I was really confused by this at first since this is not how BART works where there is no charge at first and a charge after you exit. I definitely messed this up and even had to call Clipper customer service to help me fix one of my rides. 2.) Parking I thought there was ample parking at the station when I went but other reviews says it's difficult. I didn't have any issues here. 3.) Cleanliness For some reason this station was pretty dirty. There were homeless remnants (beds, alcohol, clothes) all over the elevators and trashcans that it felt kind of unsafe. However, when you get to the tracks with the other riders, it was much better. 4.) No Shade This station has like zero shade. You might find some minimal shade in places but it's virtually zero. Wear a hat, sunscreen, or even use an umbrella to block out the sun or rain if its raining. read more

Although Lawrence station is my home station, i often walk to Murphy Square to hang a bit before catch the train. There are so much more distractions here than the Lawrence stop - loads of restaurants, cafes, bars, tea shops, grocery all within a short walk. And if i needed to use the restroom before boarding the train there isn't 1 at Lawrence but here there is a fancy porta-potty. read more

This is my ride coming back home on the days that I bike in. I don't like this place for a couple of reasons, one if they cut down a couple of trees that on hot days used to provide some great shade. Two, during rush hour, this spot is forgotten about and I can't get home, there are only 2 times I have 3:30pm or 7:20pm. Three, it can get a little sketchy after dark, I wish that a security officer would walk around the site, as a woman, I don't like guys that maybe are drunk or on drugs possibly attack me from the North Bound side that is on the other side of a fence. Super hard to escape. Call me a paranoid person, but I grew up in a tough area, and think about these things, safety is number one. In the end, gotta get home and this being the stop that's closest to my work, it's all I got. read more

This station is right downtown. It has some sheltered seating on the northbound platform and a good size sheltered seating on the southbound platform. Close walk to restaurants, food etc. if you take the train from here make sure you pay for parking before you get in the train cause they will ticket people who didn't pay for tickets read more

Oh yes, my go to Caltrain station. I haven't been here for 5 years but I must say it's even better than before. I started becoming a regular on the Caltrain starting from Spring Break and it feels good. Most of the time when I arrive at the station by bus I am the first to arrive. This place is really big and looks very fabulous. Whether I take the bus, Uber or drive myself this is the first thing that comes to mind. I don't have to wait so much after arriving. There are a lot of bus connections here. Once you get off you can get a hot meal at one of the nearby restaurants. Buying my one way ticket is cheaper here because I either go as far as Milbrae or Palo Alto. Come here and save Drawback: I don't like paying for parking if I drive here so I park on Hendy Dr. Clipper cannot be loaded with a debt card which was a issue for me. read more

It's not about the station, it's about the whole service they have. From the Clipper Card (if you use it), to the dirtiness of the trains itself, the rude employees, the delays of arrival (up to hours) and everything else, IT SUCKS. Absolutely horrible. Unfortunately I am in a situation that I have to take public transportations for daily basis and Caltrain is the only available one where I live. Uber will be costly but is worth it much more and will save you time, patience, and productivity. read more

This Caltrain station is in a great location. Right next to Murphy street, which is full of cafes, bars and restaurants . There are also a few Irish themed pubs on this street that are quite decent. The station itself is nicely laid out. You don't feel crowded or rushed waiting for the next train. read more

In terms of purely finding parking, this CalTrain station is great. The parking rate isn't too bad either at $5.50 for the whole day (just remember you number and pay at the ticketing station where you purchase your CalTrain ticket). For someone who rarely rides the train, I was able to purchase my parking and my full day ticket ride easy peasy. There was a whole lot of parking at 6am when I arrived on a weekday so I didn't have to worry about it too much though in other reviews anything after 8 am is pretty miss so come in early and just take an earlier train to get to wherever you have to go. This station is also located near Murphy Square which is not too shabby of a spot and feels safe-ish. There's two ticket machines and they're well lit, takes cash or credit card. Just read the instructions and you should be fine. You need to do two different transactions if you have to pay for parking and the ticket to ride. Make sure you keep your day pass with you as they will check the ticket when coming back from SF. All tickets pretty much cost the same so if you're heading into SF, find a baby bullet as it's a time saver for sure. I'd use this station again for sure if I ever needed to travel to the city and my destination was in SOMA. read more

This station has a big parking structure so parking is slightly less worrisome than at other stations. Nonetheless, parking is basically all filled up by 8am, give or take, so plan accordingly. On the southbound side, there's only two ticket machines, both right next to the garage, and there's sometimes a line, so keep that in mind too. Spots are pretty tight, so please stay in your lines! This is also one of the stops for some of the bullet trains, so there's a decent amount of people here, but seems to be a slightly smaller crowd than at MV. Located in downtown Sunnyvale, it's an easy walk across the street to Philz to grab a coffee while you're waiting for your train. Again, no grade separation here too, so cross carefully! read more

This is my home station! I've taken Caltrain from here to get to work for 2+ years and it's usually a relatively smooth experience unless someone happens to get run over in one of the other stations (usually Burlingame or Palo Alto). Sunnyvale is clean and safe, and there's even a restroom in the parking garage, what more can you ask for for public transit? A few tips for the newbies: 1. GET THERE EARLY IF YOU'RE BUYING A TICKET at the station! There are only 2 machines, and there's always a line during morning rush hour. You don't want to miss your train just because you didn't have time to get your ticket! Sometimes, one of the machines are down for maintenance too, which makes things even slower. 2. REMEMBER YOUR PARKING SPACE # before going down the stairs to buy a parking pass! Buy your parking pass at the same machines that you buy your paper tickets from - under the parking garage on the side with the awning and benches. No need to put the receipt in your car, you're good as long as you punched in the right space #. 3. The side across the tracks from the parking garage goes NORTH. The tracks on the same side as the parking garage goes SOUTH. 4. Parking garage fills up by 8:30AM. If that's the case, circle around the residential neighborhoods 3-4 blocks away and there should still be some (free) parking around there. The residential parking fills up around 9:00. BE CAREFUL NOT TO PARK IN THE 3 HR LIMIT SPOTS downtown! Go a few blocks out where there are no time limits. 5. Sunnyvale meter maids are notoriously nit picky. Never leave any part of your car sticking out into anyone's driveway or you'll be faced with at $40 parking ticket for sure! They'll get ya! 6. REMEMBER TO TAG ON AND TAG OFF! Clipper card is a total scam and will only refund you twice for forgetting to tag off (they charge you all the way down south to San Jose if you don't tag off at your correct stop). Certain conductors are not nice and will write you a ticket for $300+ for getting on the train without tagging on first! So remember to do so, Clipper card users! There's a lot of things I can say about improving the experience of using Clipper card, but I digress. The Clipper tagging stations at Sunnyvale are in the middle of the station, and all the way at the parking lot end of the station, it's easy to miss at night because they're not lit up, so don't forget! This is my home caltrain station now. I bike from Cupertino to this station almost every weekday morning to catch the 6:13am Baby Bullet. Read the schedule online! It helps to know when the trains are coming, as they are fairly on time. BIKERS: There are usually 2 cars that allow bikes. I don't have issue going up to SF, (as my car always has the same people, who I've now become friends with), but going south, people need to learn to stack their bikes. If there are there is a bike going to SJ, and you're going to SJ... stack your bike on top! Don't take up an extra one. If there is a bike going to SF, and you're going to milbrae, its okay to stack your bike on top since you'll be getting off first (though still preferred to stack on similar stops) NON BIKERS: Please avoid the Bike Cars on the Old Trains (where the seats are on the second floor). Caltrain rules are that bikers need to be near their bikes at all times. Thus, bikers prefer to sit in the bike car. When non-bikers take up all the seats in those cars, bikers are forced to stand as we shouldn't be going to other cars. This usually isn't an issue on the newer trains. This place is kept pretty clean, and they have people who wash the sidewalks late night. + I can't comment on parking since I don't drive here. + Murphy Ave is in walking distance, where you can grab food and drinks. Finally, caltrain has been fairly unreliable, which is sometimes their fault, sometimes not. They handle the suicides fairly well, which I can appreciate, but just yesterday, I took the 6:33pm baby bullet home (which should take 45-50 minutes). The train in front of us broke down, and we passed it. After we passed the train, our train became a local train and made EVERY stop, which meant it ended up taking an extra 40 minutes. I had dinner plans, and needless to say, I was late. I hate being late. read more

I come here more than coming home to see my mother. This is currently the closest Caltrain stop near our apartment. It gets the job done - takes us from Point A to B in a timely manner. Yes, there's delay, but it'll almost always get you to your destination on time-ish. The 8:14am bullet (Mon-Fri) at Sunnyvale will always arrive around 8:20am, so you'll never miss it. Only thing is that it's hella pack, so don't bother looking for a seat. Oh, but when it stops at Palo Alto to drop off people, you might be lucky to find yourself a seat ;) GO CALTRAIN! read more

While I like Dirdon for my departure station, Sunnyvale is probably my personal favorite for arrival. Dirdon bottlenecks on two sides of the platform. This means you have to fight the masses to get "out" of the station and it's continually a cluster to get to the parking area, or even tap your card. Sunnyvale has none of these issues because its an open station. You jump off and you're free! After a long day, it makes more difference than you think. It's also a positive that there's a Philz streetside, but that's just me. It also recently seems to have no girl scouts selling cookies - unlike Mountain View, a sincere positive for my eardrums. The station is clean and nicely located near Sunnyvale Downtown, but it might not be easy to find a parking space. I luckily found the last one when I drove there late in the morning on a weekday. The elevator was slow, and the two ticket vending machines in front of the lot were occupied. So my family and others needed to rush onto a train. One of the cleanest cal train stations I know. Parking is not free here and it does fill up quickly. Not much space to load and drop off people but it is manageable. So close to my house and has more frequent stops than the lawerence location. Easy to find, downtown Sunnyvale. Easy to follow directions and what way you want to go. This station is very accessible via public transit which is my best friend when I'm visiting the bay area. Use the transit app to navigate to or from here. I usually come from the direction of De Anza College and can get here from there in about 15 minutes. I always use the mobile app to buy the tickets so if I'm in a rush and might miss the train, I don't have to stop at the machine to buy the tickets and can just run to the train and finish buying them through the app when I'm on board. The baby bullet is the way to go if you're getting to SF and I can get there in around 45 minutes sometimes depending on the day. (Faster than driving up there) As a public transit nomad, I have a lot of respect for the integration of public transit in the bay. Caltrain is definitely an important part of the public transit ecosystem here. read more

While my car is in car body shop, I'm taking the CalTrain to work and it's very easy and fast! I wish we had more public transportation options in the Bay Area. It is a problem to get to the caltrain station through... I need to take 2 buses from my home in order to get to the station... and it's a long ride (aprx. 35-45 min), by car it's only 15 min. I prefer Sunnyvale downtown location vs. Lawrence, due to more trains stopping here. Also if you are early or late, and need to wait for the next train, you can grab a coffee or do some shopping at Macy's or Target :-) read more

While I've only been to a few Caltrain locations, I've visited this stop several times over the past few weeks. Easy access driveway for pick ups and drop offs. Located in downtown Sunnyvale, this stop has some commuter parking and a garage while being centrally located near shops and restaurants for easy access to a variety of services. The trick? Not getting stuck in commuter foot and car traffic. Otherwise, it's a piece of cake and a lovely place to catch a ride. When I think of Caltrain, I think of a (generally) reliable and efficient mode of public transportation. The system is very user friendly once you get the hang of it and ETA for every train is super accurate. And when I think of Sunnyvale, I think of one of the safest cities in all of America (https://smartasset.com/mortgage/the-safest-cities-in-america-in-2016). I make the joke that the only reason people would steal from me is to make fun of how broke I am compared to every other resident. When you add Caltrain and Sunnyvale together, you get (Sunnyvale Caltrain station, duh) one of the best public transportation stations around. And there are a number of reasons why I believe this is the case. For example, many Yelpers have already noted that the Sunnyvale Caltrain station is clean. Even though most Caltrain stations along the Peninsula are clean, this one is SUPER clean. Plus, someone has also mentioned that paring is only $5.50 for the whole day, which is comparable to Bart. In addition, this station is conveniently located in Downtown Sunnyvale, and so if you are early for your train, you can totally just lounge around and grab some food or drinks. Another cool thing about this station is that it's very, very accessible to residents in Sunnyvale. Besides the fact that it's in Downtown Sunnyvale, it's extremely close to many apartment complexes and houses. So if you are one of those people moving to Sunnyvale for work, it's a good chance that you will live somewhat close to the Caltrain. Personally, I am able to walk just a mile to get to the station. But what makes this one so unique is that it is indeed very safe. I have walked to and from this station at weird hours of the day and night and have always been left alone. I know one big issue with traveling is that it can be unsafe. I understand this, but you won't have to worry with the Sunnyvale Caltrain Station! Thus, I have to give this place a "Omg, I would travel 2 hours for this place" rating, which might be possible since you can walk from your place to the station! Travel well and prosper, read more

There's plenty of parking but you may have to make the rounds to the roof after 8ish. Allow at least five minutes to get parked and back downstairs, more if you have to buy a daily parking pass. (There is 5 hour free street parking (till 6pm) on Charles St and thereabouts, good for afternoon trips, and a free lot at Charles and Evelyn, enter on the onlet to Mathilda). Ticket machines and multiple Clipper (Formerly Translink) machines are on both sides of the tracks; the ticket machines on the northbound side are usually less used. If you're going all the way to SF or anywhere near, don't bother with the 8:13am--the 8:18 will be more comfortable and less crowded. And get your ticket (or validate your 8-ride or tag your Clipper Card) BEFORE you get on the train. The conductors might be lenient or they might give you a $250 citation. It would be nice if there was a food/coffee vendor at the station (as there are at Mountain View and San Francisco, and maybe others). Sure, you can go across the street and get something at Bean Scene or the ice cream shop, but if you have five minutes, it's not so convenient to make a 10-15 minute side trip. And it would also be nice if they had Clipper and the parking permits working together. Supposedly by end of the year, you'll be able to get your Caltrain parking pass with Clipper. But this is just a general thought on Caltrain and payment, not on the Sunnyvale station in particular. read more

Restroom in the parking lot. Doesn't have key code as it might lead you to believe. Free parking lot on the north side of the station (well kept secret - usually fills up by 7.45 AM) Buying a monthly parking pass is probably a good idea if you are a frequent traveler. You break even at 10 trips and don't have to stand in lines. It's great. If you are a bullet train commuter and you actually prefer to work on the train, it might actually make sense to skip the bullet train in favor of the slower trains so that you can work. For e.g. the 8:00 AM and the 8:18AM although about 15mins slower than the 8:13 bullet does have ample seating space. Its even a bit more convenient to nap-off. And a rant and a few tips on parking. It's frustrating that, even when there is clear evidence of under capacity for parking, caltrain is not adding another few floors of parking on top of the building they have. Anyways, on Monday - Thursday, the parking lot building usually fills up by 8:08. So if you are trying to make the 8:13 train, that's when you need to make sure you're there. It also makes sense to check with drivers exiting the parking lot at around 8:08 if they are leaving the lot because it's full. That way you can hit the road towards Mountain View and still make it on time for the 8:37 train. Not that Mountain View is any better for parking but sometimes there are South Bound trains that stop between 8:13 and 8:37 that free up some parking spots in Mountain View. read more

Parking can be a b!tch! By that I mean, it gets really crowded, really fast. If you come early enough, there is a parking area right next to the station (if you exit the Caltrain station and turn right and drive toward the corner of Evelyn and Mary, you'll see it). If all parking is full, well......you're gonna have to park in a residential area. Be careful, though. Some jack@$$ had the audacity to leave an angry note in my windshield one day after I had repeatedly parked on a street in a residential area. Hey jack@$$, if you're reading this, read carefully. It's not my fault that the station runs out of parking spaces by the time I get there. If that's the case, then I have no choice but to park on your street. As long as I'm not blocking your driveway, and as long as I haven't parked my car in a manner that causes it to be a road hazard, then STFU and deal with it. You chose to live across the street from a train station. Don't blame me for that. Blame yourself. Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest. There are ticket machines both by the parking structure and by the northbound train platform. If you're gonna be taking the train on a monthly basis, you can save a lot of money by buying a Clipper card monthly pass from Walgreens. Overall, I give it 4 stars. The station is kept relatively clean. And if your train is delayed or doesn't arrive for a while, there are lots of shopping options nearby since the station is located right next to downtown Sunnyvale. 4 stars read more

I had a major "blonde" moment as they term it... actually. it's worse than that...it's the most stupid thing ever. My girlfriend and I, one saturday decided to take the Caltrain to the city.. We parked at the covered parking at the Caltrain station in Sunnyvale. We parked on the 1st level, got out of the car, and by instinct, took the elevator... Now here goes my dumbest moment....in the elevator: Me: Now, which floor?? Carla: I don't know... (there was 1,2,3 and R).... Me: i hate how they don't list which level is which... (we tried 2...ooops..it was a parking lot) Me: (sees the R).. OH!!!! R!!! Duh!!! Railroad!!!! Carla: Oh yeah!!!! Until..it was the R... for Rooftop.. DUUUUH!!!!!! We didn't need to take the elevator after all. Okay. you can laugh now. you can even leave me a compliment saying "DUH! stupid!" I swear I'll accept it. ***oh..Back to my review! love this location!!!! Wish i learned how to commute using the Caltrain earlier..I'll definitely be using this more!" I've been using this station ever since I came to Sunnyvale as a little boy, and I've never had any problems with it. I remember back in the days before they had the huge garage and the plaza with the ticketing machines. Ok that was too long ago to remember, but I know it existed. The Sunnyvale station has always been a big part of my life. Whether it was going to San Francisco with friends or coming back home during college, it has always been there as a convenient access point to home. Home is where the heart is, right? There's plenty of parking, the area is always kept very clean, and the architecture of the main plaza is beautiful. The only downside is having to cross to the other side all the way at the end of the platform, but it's really not a big deal. It's also pretty convenient when the Baby Bullet trains go straight from Milbrae BART station to Sunnyvale in less than half an hour. Makes the trip so much faster! read more

Like most everyone else, I've run into trouble with parking here. Knowing that the parking lot is full by 8 is a good incentive to keep my on time for work though. I usually get to the station before 7:45 and can get parking on the 3/4th floor. Prior to getting a monthly parking pass I parked in the neighborhood next to the station..that worked for a while until I got a ticket. The good thing is that Sunnyvale is a high traffic stop so most trains will stop there. read more

All Aboard! First time going to this Caltrain station, and with it being late by 2 minutes, my girlfriends and I were able to make it just in time!!! I've never taken Bart before, so can't compare the two, but my two friends who never rode Caltrain (and one had taken Bart before) thought it was clean and cozy, loving the second floor as well. If you sit in the 4 seater (2 seats facing 2 seats) it's cozy, but a bit tight, even for smaller girls like us. Knees grazing one another. Parking is also free at this location after 6 PM! read more

My first trip taking Caltrain to the city was a success! Had a great time sitting on the 2nd level and zooming by all the cities. Makes you appreciate the view when you don't have to drive! Not much I can really say about this specific location other than they have plenty of parking. The parking structure goes up about 4-5 floors making it more convenient than say Mountain View. Caltrain in general is a very convenient way to commute to work or trips to SF. It's clean and you can eat and drink on the train. Great for Giants games in the city. Last train out of SF on the weekday and Saturday is 12 am. read more

I like the layout of this station. There is always parking available and the ticket booth is located in a good spot (unlike the mtn view station where the booth is located all the way on the north side of the platform). So if you're in a rush to catch a train, it's right there on the way. I've used the restroom a few times. Hey, when you're drinking brews on the train it's bound to happen! Anyways, it's always filthy. Well one time I stepped into a huge pile of vomit. Totally ruined my day. FML style. So if you use this station, don't use it's restroom facility. It's horrible. The first part will be my shtick about Caltrain as a whole and will be used in all my reviews. Caltrain is a efficient way to get around the Peninsula without having to park. As long as there are no incidents or attempted suicides the trains are on time. I can't always say that about Bart. The zone payment system is a great way to let people plan their trips by their budget. The stations are available as long as you want to go somewhere along El Camino Real. Anything else requires a bus ride or two. It's great for what it does; it gets people from one place to another in a relatively short amount of time. The Sunnyvale station would get 4 stars for it's vicinity to the restaurants near Washington and Murphy Avenues, but the amenities are on par for all stations. It just can't beat SF and other transit hub stations. It's also way to far from El Camino. As you go farther south, the stations are farther away from El Camino, so I can't just blame Sunnyvale. Otherwise it's decently lit and there's a large parking garage structure and an empty station agent booth. read more

This is an old station but is kept up well. Parking lot is larger than most but everyone local knows it and it will fill up. The mall near by is still in construction (10 years?) You can attempt to park there but you may get a ticket, I think 3 hour max. 2 Ticket machines means buy early it may be crowded and you can miss the train as I have seen many last minute runners, The Clipper card is taken now just swipe before you get on and off. but no where to refill it!
